Rivers export nutrients to coastal waters. Excess nutrient export may result in harmful algal blooms and hypoxia, affecting biodiversity, fisheries, and recreation. The purpose of this study is to quantify for European rivers (1) the extent to which N and P loads exceed levels that minimize the risk of harmful algal blooms and (2) the relative shares of sources of N and P in rivers. This may help to identify effective management strategies to reduce coastal eutrophication. We focus on 48 rivers in 27 countries of the European Union (EU27). We used the Global Nutrient Export from Watersheds (NEWS) model to analyze nutrient export by rivers and the associated potentials for coastal eutrophication as reflected by Indicator for Coastal Eutrophication Potential (ICEP). In 2000, 38 of the 48 EU rivers indicated in our study had an ICEP > 0, indicating a relatively high potential for harmful algal blooms. These 38 rivers cover 60% of EU27 land area. Between 2000 and 2050 nutrient export by European rivers is projected to decrease. However, by 2050 still 34 EU rivers, covering 48% of the land area, have an ICEP > 0. This indicates that in these scenarios little progress is made in terms of environmental improvement. About one-third of the rivers with ICEP > 0 are N limited, and about two-thirds P limited. In N-limited rivers reducing N loads is a more effective way to reduce the risk for coastal eutrophication than reducing P, and vice versa. For N-limited rivers agriculture or sewage are the dominant sources of nutrients in river water. In P-limited rivers, sewage is found to be the dominant source of P, except for rivers draining into the Atlantic Ocean, where agriculture can also be dominant. A basin-specific approach is needed to effectively reduce N and P loads.  相似文献

Abstract

Bioassays were carried out in the culture media for Vibrio-qinghaiensis sp.Nov.-Q67 and the influences of alkalinity and different concentrations of chloride, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and natural derived fulvic acid (FA) on the labile concentration and toxicity of Cu were investigated. The labile concentration of Cu was obtained by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry with a double acidification method (DAM-DPASV). Changes in water alkalinity and chloride concentrations did not affect the labile concentration of Cu, but increases of alkalinity and concentrations of chloride reduced the toxicity on Q67. In the presence of EDTA and FA, both labile concentration of Cu and toxicity were reduced. By excluding Cu-carbonate complexes and Cu-chloride from labile concentration, a bioavailable concentration of Cu (or [Cu*]) was obtained and used to predict the acute toxicity of Cu on Q67. For natural waters, the labile concentration of Cu was measured by DAM-DPASV and [Cu*] was calculated by a MINTEQ A2 software based on composition of waters. This procedure was tested for Guanting Reservoir waters by spiking different concentration Cu. The results showed that [Cu*] was a good indicator for Cu toxicity and could be used in field conditions.  相似文献

Despite the fact that estrogens cause hormonal disturbances in aquatic organisms, few studies on the estrogen contamination in our surface waters have been conducted. This study was thus conducted (1) to investigate the level of estrogens in the surface waters in Shenzhen and (2) to examine the estrogen levels in the sewage discharges in Hong Kong. Total estrogens (estrone E1, estradiol E2, and estriol E3) in the samples taken from two reservoirs, five rivers, and thirty sampling locations of the seawater in Shenzhen were measured by using ELISA kits. The preliminary results have revealed that the level of estrogens in the surface waters of Shenzhen is generally higher than that in the similar water bodies in well-developed nations. Sewage could be the major source of the estrogen contamination in these waters. The total estrogens levels in the Xili and Shenzhen Reservoirs were in a range of 3–11 ng/L with a mean value of 7 ng/L, where that in four rivers in Shenzhen were found to be 47–90 ng/L and 60.25 ng/L, respectively. In the seawater near the sewage discharge points they were 260–300 ng/L and 287 ng/L, respectively. The estradiol levels in the influent and effluent of three sewage treatment works (STWs) in Hong Kong were also monitored. The activated sludge process used in these STWs removed more than 80% whereas the chemical coagulation processed used at the Stonecutters Island STW removed less estrogens. Biological treatment appears to play a significant role in removing estrogens from wastewater.  相似文献

Two interesting chydorid Cladocera were found in caves of Hercegovina and are described here. The pantropical Alona diaphana King, 1853 was already known in this part of Europe, but was found in a cave environment for the first time. The aims of this study were to (i) assess the efficacy of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) for detecting Arctic Charr at their spawning grounds and (ii) characterize the overall acoustic soundscape of these sites. PAM was carried out over three Arctic Charr spawning grounds in the UK, one lotic and two lentic. 24-h cycles of recordings were collected prior to and during the Arctic Charr spawning season, which was determined from data returns by simultaneous net monitoring. Acoustic analysis consisted of manual quantification of sound sources, Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI) calculation and spectral analysis in 1/3 octave band (SPL; dB re 1 μPa). In the lotic spawning ground, prior to the beginning of Arctic Charr spawning, SPL and ACI showed a restricted range of variation throughout the 24-h, while during spawning the night values of SPL and ACI were found to significantly increase, concurrently with the rate of gravel noise induced by fish spawning activities and fish air passage sounds. Both prior to and during the Arctic Charr run, the lentic soundscape was characterized by diel variation due to the daytime presence of anthropogenic noise and the night-time presence of insect calls, while only a few occurrences of fish air passage sounds and gravel noise were recorded. These findings suggest that PAM over Arctic Charr spawning grounds could provide meaningful information to be used in developing management plans for this threatened species, such as determining the location and time of arrival, diel pattern and length of spawning activities.  相似文献

Plankton diversity reflects the quality and health of waters and should be monitored as a critical feature of marine ecosystems. This study applied a pair of 28S rRNA gene‐specific primers and pyrosequencing to assess the effects of large‐scale cultivation of the seaweed Gracilaria lemaneiformis on the biodiversity of eukaryotic plankton community in the coastal water of Guangdong, China. With 1 million sequences (2,221 operational taxonomic units [OTUs]) obtained from 51 samples, we found that the biodiversity of eukaryotic plankton community was significantly higher in the seaweed cultivation area than that in the nearby control area as reflected in OTU richness, evenness (Shannon–Wiener index) and dominance (Simpson index) for total plankton community and its four subcategories when Gracilaria biomass reached the maximum, while no such a significant difference was observed before seaweed inoculation. Our laboratory experiment using an artificial phytoplankton community of nine species observed the same effects of Gracilaria exposure. Principal component analysis and principal coordinates analysis showed the plankton community structure in cultivation area markedly differed from the control area when Gracilaria biomass reached its maximum. Redundancy analysis showed that G. lemaneiformis was the critical factor in controlling the dynamics of eukaryotic plankton communities in the studied coastal ecosystem. Our results explicitly demonstrated G. lemaneiformis cultivation could enhance biodiversity of plankton community via allelopathy, which prevents one or several plankton species from blooming and consequently maintains a relatively higher biodiversity. Our study provided further support for using large‐scale G. lemaneiformis cultivation as an effective approach for improving costal ecosystem health.  相似文献

Branchipus visnyai is presently known from only one location, in Italy, on Monte Catabio (central Appennine, Latium, 1590 m a.s.l). It lives in a large astatic pond and in a small temporary pool close to the pond. Typically two generations appear in the pond (in spring after snowmelt and in autumn after dilution by rainfall), unless an exceptionally dry season occurs. Yet, due to shallowness and small size, filling and duration of the pool is erratic and depends on the annual amount of snow and rainfall. Consequently, B. visnyai does not always appear in the pool.Field studies suggest that either a rise in temperature or a drop in conductivity may trigger cyst hatching in the two biotopes. Also, the species exhibits a high tolerance to change in environmental factors like water temperature. Hatching occurs within a range of 10–22 °C, adults survive at temperatures from 1 to 27 °C. The optimum seems to correspond to 10–20 °C.  相似文献

Distribution patterns of aquatic oligochaete assemblages, inhabiting largely unpolluted watercourses, in the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula, and their relationships with chemical and physiographical characteristics were analyzed by means of multivariate analyses. Qualitative and quantitative samples from 47 stations were obtained seasonally during 1983/84 and 1988/90. The variables included in this study were altitude, order number, distance from the origin, mean width, mean depth, substrate, current velocity, oxygen content, pH, conductivity, alkalinity and concentration of different ions.From a chemical point of view, major changes in the structure of oligochaete assemblages were related to water mineralization. The correlation between faunal distribution and environmental variables showed a great increase when physiographic parameters were included in the analyses. Substrate type and current velocity are the principal variables explaining the community structure.  相似文献
