Resource availability constrains the life history strategies available to organisms and may thereby limit population growth rates and productivity. We used this conceptual framework to explore the mechanisms driving recently reported negative relationships between fish productivity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in lakes. We studied populations of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) in a set of lakes with DOC concentrations ranging from 3 to 24 mg/L; previous work has demonstrated that primary and secondary productivity of food webs is negatively related to DOC concentration across this gradient. For each population, we quantified individual growth rate, age at maturity, age‐specific fecundity, maximum age, length‐weight and length‐egg size relationships, and other life history characteristics. We observed a strong negative relationship between maximum size and DOC concentration; for instance, fish reached masses of 150 to 260 g in low‐DOC lakes but <120 g in high‐DOC lakes. Relationships between fecundity and length, and between egg size and length, were constant across the DOC gradient. Because fish in high‐DOC lakes reached smaller sizes but had similar fecundity and egg size at a given size, their total lifetime fecundity was as much as two orders of magnitude lower than fish in low‐DOC lakes. High DOC concentrations appeared to constrain the range of bluegill life history strategies available; populations in high‐DOC lakes always had low initial growth rates and high ages at maturity, whereas populations in low‐DOC showed higher variability in these traits. This was also the case for the intrinsic rates of natural increase of these populations, which were always low at the high end of the DOC gradient. The potentially lower capacity for fish populations in high‐DOC lakes to recover from exploitation has clear implications for the sustainable management of recreational fisheries in the face of considerable spatial heterogeneity and ongoing temporal change in lake DOC concentrations.  相似文献

The paper provides a list of the non-indigenous animal species occurring today in Italian inland waters. Xenodiversity was found to amount to 112 species (64 invertebrates and 48 vertebrates), which contribute for about 2% to the inland-water fauna in Italy. Northern and central regions are most affected, and Asia, North America, and the rest of Europe are the main donor continents. The large majority of non-indigenous species entered Italy as a direct or indirect effect of human intervention. A difference between invertebrates and vertebrates was found for their mode of arrival (unintentional for invertebrates and intentional for vertebrates). Accidental transport, in association with both fish (for aquaculture or stock enhancement) and crops, has been the main vector of invertebrate introductions, whereas vertebrates were mostly released for stocking purposes. Overall stock enhancement (47.92%) and culture (37.5%) prevailed over the other pathways. Seventeen and 7 species of our list are included among the 100 worst invasive species of Europe (DAISIE) and of the world (IUCN), respectively. For some (but not all) non-indigenous species recorded in Italy the multilevel impact exerted on the recipient communities and ecosystems is known, even if rarely quantified, but knowledge on their chronic impact is still missing. Additional research is needed to provide criteria for prioritizing intervention against well established invaders and identify which new potential invader should be targeted as “unwanted”.  相似文献

The phylogenetic analysis of bacterial communities in environments receiving anthropogenic impact could help us to understand its effects and might be useful in the development of monitoring or management strategies. A study of the composition of 16S rDNA clone libraries prepared from bacterial communities in water samples from a marina and a beach on the coast of Mallorca (W. Mediterranean) was undertaken at two time points, corresponding to periods of maximum and minimum anthropogenic use of this area for nautical and recreational activities. Libraries generated from the marina were significantly different from those from the beach and a non-impacted, bay sample. In the marina, a predominance of sequence types was observed related to bacterioplankton from nutrient-enriched environments or typically associated with phytoplankton, such as certain phylotypes of the Roseobacter clade, OM60 clade and Bacteroidetes. Similar results were found in the summer beach library but not in the winter one, in which there was an increase in the number of clones from oligotrophic groups, in agreement with lower chlorophyll content and bacterial counts. Therefore, nutrient enrichment seemed to be an important driver of the composition of bacterial communities in sites receiving direct human impact. Interesting sequence types from the Cryomorphaceae and group agg58 (Bacteroidetes) were exclusively found in beach libraries, and the reasons for this distribution deserve further study. Clones related to putative hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria of the genus Acinetobacter were observed in the marina, in agreement with a certain degree of pollution at this site. Non-marine sequences belonging to the Actinobacteria predominated over marine groups in the summer library from the marina and, therefore, unusual communities might be transiently present in this enclosed environment. Overall, the composition of the bacterial communities in these environments agreed well with the defining characteristics of the environments sampled.  相似文献

Today’s knowledge of worldwide species diversity of 19 families of aquatic Diptera in Continental Waters is presented. Nevertheless, we have to face for certain in most groups a restricted knowledge about distribution, ecology and systematic, particularly in the tropical environments. At the same time we realize a dramatically decline or even lack of specialists being able, having the time or the opportunity to extend or even secure the present information. The respective families with approximate numbers of aquatic species are: Blephariceridae (308), Deuterophlebiidae (14), Nyphomyiidae (7), Psychodidae (∼2.000), Scatopsidae (∼5), Tanyderidae (41), Ptychopteridae (69), Dixidae (173), Corethrellidae (97), Chaoboridae (∼50), Thaumaleidae (∼170), Ceratopogonidae (∼6.000), Stratiomyidae (∼43), Empididae (∼660), Lonchopteridae (2), Syrphidae (∼1.080), Sciomyzidae (∼190), Ephydridae (∼1.500), Muscidae (∼870). (1) A study of the metazoan community occurring in water-filled tree-holes in southern Germany has been performed to determine the relationships among the key species of arthropods found within the community and a range of structural, physical and chemical factors, using multivariate techniques. (2) Four animal species were sufficiently common to allow identification of the preferred environments for their larvae. The aedine mosquito, Aedes geniculatus, prefers shallow open tree-holes with relatively little leaf litter even though these may represent less permanent water-bodies. The scirtid beetle, Prionocyhon serricornis, occurs in larger, deeper holes with greater amounts of leaf litter and a more predictable aquatic environment, although open water is not a requisite. Larvae of the orthocladiine chironomid, Metriocnemus cavicola, favours shallow more open tree-holes with higher litter content but with sufficient open water to ensure an adequate oxygen supply. The eristaline syrphid, Myatropa florea, favours shallow, open tree-holes with low litter content. (3) There is no evidence that interspecific interactions affect the distribution or abundance of any of these species. (4) The autecological results are discussed in light of those available for phytotelm dwellers elsewhere. The food-web overall may be interpreted as so simple that it is driven by ‘bottom-up’ environmental factors with no part played by those community-level ‘top-down’ processes that may be adduced for more complex, multi-trophic level webs occurring elsewhere. The Biotic Index based on Posidonia oceanica (BiPo) is a classification system for evaluation of the ecological status in Mediterranean coastal waters, developed in accordance with the EU Water Framework requirements. The aim of this study is to verify the applicability and reliability of the BiPo index to different geographical areas of the north-western Mediterranean (France, Spain and Italy), to understand whether such a classification system may be applied more extensively, as so far it has only been applied to coastal waters in Corsica. The ecological status determined for sites is verified against pressures revealed from satellite imagery and from trace metal contamination of plants, to identify the sources of pressure that may be responsible for a low ecological status. The results of this study indicate that: (i) the BiPo index responds reliably to pressures, in different areas of the Mediterranean; (ii) sites with an ecological quality ratio (EQR) close to the good/moderate boundary require particular attention to identify and reduce causes of deterioration; (iii) the support of chemical indicators, in this case metal contamination, is relevant to identify potential sources of pressure.  相似文献

Although it is commonly acknowledged that calanoid copepods inhabiting fresh water evolved from marine ancestors via the brackish water of estuaries, it is less well appreciated that a restricted number of species with freshwater affinities have conquered athalassic saline waters. The global importance of the latter habitat has been under-estimated and, with climate change and human population growth, it is expanding at the expense of fresh waters. Considering Australia, South America and the Holarctic, at least seven halobiontic calanoid species occur in athalassic saline waters (the situation in Africa is not visited). In Australian inland-water Centropagidae, there is a high degree of congruence between the ecological trend in habitat occupancy (marine through brackish and fresh to athalassic saline waters) and the assumed evolutionary trend towards reduction in the setation and segmentation of swimming legs. The validity of the inference by Adamowicz et al. (Biological Journal of the Linnean Society of London 90: 279–292, 2007a) that a hypothesis of oligomerization was not supported as the mode of evolution of South American non-marine Centropagidae is criticized for reasons of inadequate character sampling. The phylogeny, biogeography and osmo-regulatory physiology of Southern Hemisphere inland-water centropagids are reviewed in some detail. Calanoids have mastered a significant portion of the total salinity range for athalassic saline waters (3 to 300+ g l−1) but, unlike brine shrimps, they have not evolved a mechanism for hypo-osmotic regulation and do not tolerate saturated or near-saturated brines.

Isotopic analysis of rock samples showed anomalously 18O-depleted reconstructed isotopic composition of paleo-meteoric water over southern Israel between the Late Cretaceous and the Early Miocene, with δ18OW as low as −14‰ [SMOW]. This range is significantly “lighter” than the expected values for rain at the relevant paleo-latitudes (~ 8°N to 25°N). It is similar or lighter than areas with meteoric water at the present climate, in which rainfall contribution from tropical cyclone (TC) is significant. Rainfall from TCs is 18O-depleted because of the recirculation of the vapor into repeated precipitation or distillation cycles. A paleo-geographic reconstruction of the region shows that throughout the period there was a warm ocean to the east and southeast of the relevant area. Thus, TCs formed over the ocean and made landfall on the coastline at a distance of 300 to 400 km to the east. The reconstructed composition of the rainwater implies dominance of TCs at these times. Furthermore, the combination of warmer seas and lighter rainwater than at present suggests that the TCs were more dominant than in the most TC-prone coastal areas at the present climate. The results of the present study suggest that climate during the relevant time periods was very different from the present, with TC activity similar or exceeding the most TC prone locations in the world at the present climate. This might also hint that warmer sea waters in the geological past were conducive to greater TC activity than in the present climate. Answering this question requires additional research.  相似文献

Being inspired in the process of teaching and studying on tourism geography and heritage landscapes, the author attempts to broaden the scope of traditional studies in landscape ecology. Upon reviewing the progress, limitations and boundaries of landscape ecology, he criticizes the negligence of waterscapes by academics. The author further examines some waterscape conservation policy programs practiced by different nations. These include 10 National Seashores, 4 National Lakeshores, 4 National Rivers, 13 National Marine Sanctuaries and 1 Marine National Monument in USA, 13 Marine National Parks, 11 Marine Sanctuaries and 4 multiple use Marine Reserves in the State of Victoria, Australia, 3 Marine Nature Reserves and 43 Heritage Coasts in UK, and 272 National Water Parks in China. Based on these explorations, the author proposes a few hypotheses on waterscape ecology. Finally, he concludes that as one among many sub-disciplines of applied ecology, waterscape ecology can only achieve its full-fledged growth through concerted efforts among academics, and the supports from both governments and non-government organizations. Meanwhile, the site-specific policy practices with the rapid increasing social needs will likely facilitate the development of this infant school. Hopefully, the birth and development of waterscape ecology will contribute to the prosperity of global academics and the maintenance of earth level environmental health.  相似文献

As one of the largest extreme acidic environments in the world the Río Tinto (Spain) constitutes a useful case to study the vegetation resistant to waters, sediments and soils with pH < 3 and high concentrations of S, Fe, Cu and other metals. In this territory two types of water courses coexist: the extreme acidic waters, with a low pH and high amounts of S and Fe, usually of a red color, and those that are not extremely acid, which include colorless acid, neutral and basic waters with much less S and Fe. An exhaustive study of the riparian vegetation present along the two first sections of the Río Tinto and in less extreme, neighboring water courses was carried out (61 inventories). Some water quality variables (pH, redox, Fe, Cu and O2) were measured in sampled points. Correspondence between plant community composition and water quality was analyzed through hierarchical classification, detrended correspondence analysis and canonical correspondence analysis.Results indicate clear differences in vegetation between extremely acidic and less extreme water courses. A total of 50 emergent plant species have been found in extremely acidic waters. Among them the most frequent were Erica andevalensis Cabezudo and J. Rivera, Scirpoides holoschoenus (L.) Soják and Nerium oleander L. Additionally, pH, redox, Fe and O2 concentrations were significantly related to the floristic data.  相似文献
