Analyses of lifetime fitness in birds are typically based on estimates of breeding success, in particular the number of offspring fledged. Small and isolated bird populations often have a male‐skewed adult sex ratio, so that male lifetime productivity depends to a large degree on pairing success, but few studies have focused on patterns of lifetime pairing success. The Norwegian population of Ortolan Buntings Emberiza hortulana is strongly male‐skewed, such that in any year about half of all males are unpaired. Pairing success of first‐year males (16–44%) was significantly lower than for older males (52–89%). Lifetime pairing success was correlated with lifespan and was strongly skewed, with a majority of males being paired only once or never, and only 11% paired three or more times despite a stable lifetime annual survival rate of 63%. Males that were paired in one year were more likely to be paired the next year than males that were unpaired in the previous year. The shortage of females caused even the older males to have a substantial probability of becoming unpaired, and 49% of long‐lived males (known as adults for at least 4 years) were unpaired after years in which they were paired. Pairing success in the Ortolan Bunting therefore follows similar age‐related and lifetime patterns in breeding success documented in other species. However, even the older males ran a high risk of not being paired, contrasting with earlier distinctions between pre‐breeding and breeding lifespans. For more than 20 years scientists of the ‘Food-chain studies’ Group of the former Limnological Institute have been studying
interactions within the pelagic food web. Purpose of research was to explain the structure and dynamics of the zooplankton
and fish communities in lakes and reservoirs in relation to biotic and abiotic environmental factors. A so-called multi-species
approach was used, in which all common and abundant species within a specific ecosystem were studied on the individual and
population level with the same degree of detail. The recent results and the scientific approach used are evaluated and the
main gaps in knowledge about food-web dynamics in shallow eutrophic lakes are identified and discussed. It is concluded that
instead of the purely functional approach used so far, future studies should also include evolutionary aspects which determine
the success of an organism in a given environment and that more attention should be paid to central questions in ‘community
ecology’.

Intergenerational fitness effects on offspring due to the early life of the parent are well studied from the standpoint of the maternal environment, but intergenerational effects owing to the paternal early life environment are often overlooked. Nonetheless, recent laboratory studies in mammals and ecologically relevant studies in invertebrates predict that paternal effects can have a major impact on the offspring's phenotype. These nongenetic, environment‐dependent paternal effects provide a mechanism for fathers to transmit environmental information to their offspring and could allow rapid adaptation. We used the bank vole Myodes glareolus, a wild rodent species with no paternal care, to test the hypothesis that a high population density environment in the early life of fathers can affect traits associated with offspring fitness. We show that the protein content in the diet and/or social environment experienced during the father's early life (prenatal and weaning) influence the phenotype and survival of his offspring and may indicate adaptation to density‐dependent costs. Furthermore, we show that experiencing multiple environmental factors during the paternal early life can lead to a different outcome on the offspring phenotype than stimulated by experience of a single environmental factor, highlighting the need to study developmental experiences in tandem rather than independent of each other. 相似文献

Multivariate analysis identified atwo-dimensional continuum of life-historyvariation among 301 fish species from Europe,North America, South America and the Atlanticand Pacific coasts of North America. The firstaxis was associated with larger body size,higher fecundity, delayed maturation, fewerreproductive events, and shorter breedingseason on one end and small size, lowfecundity, early maturity, multiplereproductive events per year, and prolongedbreeding season on the other. The second axiscontrasted fishes having larger eggs and moreparental care against fishes with the oppositesuite of traits.Phylogenetic affiliations of species wereapparent in the general patterns of ordinationof species within orders, indicatingevolutionary divergences in life-historypatterns. In fact, partitioning the variance oflife-history traits showed that taxonomic orderand latitude were the most important factorsand geographic region and habitat the least.Despite phylogenetic constraints, basiclife-history patterns showed consistencybetween distantly geographical regions,latitudinal ranges and basic adult habitats,indicating convergences in life-historypatterns. Although the basic life-historypatterns seemed repeatable among distantlyrelated taxa, geographical and latitudinalaffiliations were apparent. Species from SouthAmerica are skewed toward the opportunisticendpoint, whereas North American marine speciesare skewed toward the periodic endpoint of thetrilateral continuum model. Most of the fishspecies from South American data set came fromfluctuating environments, so an opportunisticstrategy of early maturation and continuousspawning permits efficient recolonization ofhabitats over small spatial scales. Incontrast, most species in the North Americanand European data sets came from seasonalhabitats that are nonetheless more hydrologicalstable, so a periodic strategy of delayingmaturation to attain large clutches enhancesadult survivorship during suboptimalenvironmental conditions and recruitment whenearly life stages encounter suitableenvironmental conditions. Moose, Alces alces, occur naturally throughout most of Canada but successful introductions of known numbers of animals have been made to the islands of Newfoundland and Cape Breton. Five microsatellite loci were used to investigate the population genetic structure and any change in genetic variability due to founder events of moose in Canada. Comparisons of allele frequencies for moose from 11 regions of the country suggested that there are at least seven genetically distinct populations (P < 0.05) in North America, namely Alberta, eastern Ontario, New Brunswick, Cape Breton, Labrador, western Newfoundland, and the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. The average population heterozygosity was approximately 33% (range from 22 to 41%). UPGMA analysis of Nei's genetic distances produced phenograms similar to what would be expected when geographical location and population history are considered. The loss of heterozygosity due to a single founder event (n = 3; two introductions and a natural colonization) ranged from 14 to 30%, and the cumulative loss of heterozygosity due to two successive founder events (an introduction followed by a natural colonization) was 46%. In these examples loss of genetic variability has not been associated with any known phenotypic deviances, suggesting that populations may be established from a small number of founders. However, the viability of these founded populations over evolutionary timescales cannot be determined and is highly dependent upon chance. 相似文献

Although many studies investigating the impacts of zoo exhibit designs on captive animals exist, none have been performed on how they influence the behavior and welfare of captive Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus). Here, we assess the impact of exhibit design on the activity budget and spatial distribution of Bennett's wallabies. We compared animal behavior in two open exhibits (i.e. physical interaction between animals and visitors permitted) to two closed exhibits (i.e. physical interaction between animals and visitors prohibited). Behavioral data were collected using focal sampling, and spatial distribution was recorded on exhibit maps at regular time intervals. We found a significant increase in feeding and interactive behaviors in closed exhibits in comparison to open exhibits. However, other behaviors such as resting, locomotion, and vigilance did not vary with design. Functional use of space was similar between both designs; however, the effect of habituation may be relevant to consider in future studies. Although some support for visitor effects were present, our study provided no evidence for strong impacts of exhibit design on Bennett's wallaby welfare. Our study emphasizes the need for additional research into the impacts of how zoo environments affect Bennett's wallaby behavior and welfare. 相似文献

Temperature treatment during ovarian recrudescence influenced temporal changes in plasma testosterone (T) and oestradiol-17β (E2 ). In fish exposed to 8 and 12° C early in the cycle the peaks of both T and E2 were delayed by 4 weeks in comparison with those of fish held at 4° C throughout the experiment. Abstract: Estimates have been made of the amounts and rates of uptake of radioactive branched-chain i-amino acids, L-phenylalanine, and L-glutamine into incubated rat brain cortex slices. Estimates have also been made of the binding of these amino acids to brain cell fragments. It is shown that such binding, as well as the process of passive diffusion, is not affected by the presence of ouabain (0.2 mM), which suppresses the energy-dependent concentrative uptakes of the amino acids investigated. The maximum specific binding of L-glutamine is about three times that of the other amino acids and amounts to about 11% of the total uptake of the amino acid by rat brain cortex slices in 12 min from a medium containing 0.25 mM-glutamine. The sodium-ion concentration of the medium appears not to play a significant role in determining the rate of L-glutamine uptake in brain slices except at relatively low concentrations (<20 mequiv./l). The presence of Na+ , however, is essential for the attainment of a tissue-to-medium concentration ratio greater than 2.0 for L-glutamine. At relatively low concentrations (0.25 mM) the rapidity of uptake of L-glutamine into a suspension of nerve terminals exceeds that into brain cortex slices. The uptakes of L-glutamine (Km 's = 0.66 mM and 2.25 mM) and of the branched chain L-amino acids (Km 's approx. 0.3 mM and 2 mM) by rat brain cortex slices are characterized by a double affinity system, but that of L-phenylalanine has only one affinity system (Km = 0.23 mM). The Km 's have been calculated after subtracting the ouabain-insensitive passive uptakes of the amino acids from the total observed uptakes. 相似文献

Experiments in laboratory stream channels compared the behaviour of Deleatidium mayfly nymphs in the absence of fish with that in the presence of either native common river galaxias (Galaxias vulgaris Stokell) or introduced brown trout (Salmo trutta L.). Galaxias present similar predation risks to prey during day and night but are more active at night. Whereas, trout present a higher predation risk during the day. Deleatidium maintained a fixed nocturnal drift periodicity that is characteristic of streams containing visually feeding fish regardless of the nature of the predation regime presented in the laboratory. However, the number on the substratum surface, and therefore able to graze algae, was lower when fish were present than when they were absent. The number was lower during the day in the presence of trout, when they present the highest predation risk, and lower during the night compared to the day in trials with galaxias when galaxias activity disturbs Deleatidium from the substratum. Increases in the probability of Deleatidium leaving a patch, reductions in the proportion of mayflies on high quality patches and reductions in the distance travelled from refuge also reflected variations in the predation regime. Similar differences in positioning were observed under the same predation regimes in in situ channels in the Shag River and these were associated with differences in algal biomass. Algal ash-free dry mass (AFDM) and chlorophyll a (chl a) were higher on the tops of cobbles when fish were present. Fish also affected the biomass and the distribution of algae on cobbles as AFDM and chl a were higher on the sides of cobbles from channels with trout compared to those with galaxias. Changes in grazing behaviour, caused by predator avoidance, are likely to have been responsible for differences in algal biomass because no significant differences were detected between treatments in the biomass of Deleatidium or of total invertebrates. 相似文献
