Artificial crossing experiments were made with three taxa of Ocimum. Plants ofO. forskolei Benth. andO. basilicum L. var. purpurascens Benth. were found to be interfertile, butO. americanum L. var.pilosum (Willd.) Paton was found to be reproductively isolated from the other two taxa. The new chromosome number 2n = 48 was counted inO. forskolei. These results suggest thatO. forskolei might be the closest relative of the Sweet Basil. The origin of the Sweet Basil is also discussed.  相似文献

With the aim of improving the safety and nutritional quality of traditional African weaning porridge, the reduction of the viscosity of a high solids fermented pearl millet porridge by addition of sorghum malt (amylase rich flour, ARF) was investigated. The effect of fermentation, cooking, malt addition and recooking on the microflora of, and the survival of an inoculated pathogen were determined. Addition of 5% (w/v) sorghum ARF to the gelatinized millet porridge gave an acceptable viscosity of 2500–3000 cP at a high solid content of 30%. Fermentation inhibited the growth of microorganisms in the porridge and recooking the fermented porridge after sorghum ARF addition further eliminated (<102 c.f.u./g) the moulds and coliforms that were introduced with the sorghum ARF. The recooked, fermented millet plus sorghum ARF porridge prevented the proliferation of the inoculated Escherichia coli and reduced it to <102 c.f.u./g within 18 h. The porridge could supply children under 3 years with the daily required protein using 1.4 feedings per day and required energy with 4 feedings a day.  相似文献

When a phytase solution, soluble starch, and sorghum liquor wastes were mixed at the ratio of 1:1:10 (v/w/w), the residual phytase activities after 30 min of treatment at 70 and 80 °C were respectively, about 90% and 18% of that at 37 °C. After 10 min treatment, the residual activity was 67% at 80 °C and 10% at 90 °C.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to investigate the in situ rheological behavior of yeast biofilms growing on stainless steel under static and turbulent flow. The species used (Rhodototula mucilaginosa, Candida krusei, Candida kefyr and Candida tropicalis) were isolated from a clarified apple juice industry. The flow conditions impacted biofilm composition over time, with a predominance of C. krusei under static and turbulent flow. Likewise, structural variations occurred, with a tighter appearance under dynamic flow. Under turbulent flow there was an increase of 112 μm in biofilm thickness at 11 weeks (p < 0.001) and cell morphology was governed by hyphal structures and rounded cells. Using the in situ growth method introduced here, yeast biofilms were determined to be viscoelastic materials with a predominantly solid-like behavior, and neither this nor the G’0 values were significantly affected by the flow conditions or the growth time, and at large deformations their weak structure collapsed beyond a critical strain of about 1.5–5%. The present work could represent a starting point for developing in situ measurements of yeast rheology and contribute to a thin body of knowledge about fungal biofilm formation.  相似文献

In addition to the maintenance of Ca2+ homeostasis, the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is involved in many diverse physiological functions in the mammalian body. The receptor works as a kokumi taste receptor in taste buds and as a nutrient sensor in the gut, where it regulates the secretion of glycemic response and appetite-related hormones. To identify novel human CaSR (hCaSR) activators from food ingredients, we conducted a screening using a cell-based hCaSR assay. Hen egg-white lysozyme, which is a sweet protein, was found to be a novel orthosteric agonist of hCaSR with an EC50 value of 592 μM. Lysozyme hydrolysate was not able to activate hCaSR, thus suggesting that the protein structure of lysozyme is necessary for hCaSR activation. Thaumatin, which is another sweet protein, also activated hCaSR with an EC50 value of 71 μM. This is the first report that shows hCaSR activation by proteins with molecular weights exceeding 10,000 Da. These results provide a new avenue for the development of hCaSR activators, which could be applicable in food or drugs that modulate taste perception, appetite, or glucose tolerance, in addition to Ca2+ homeostasis.  相似文献

The effect of salinity on population densities of Tylenchulus semipenetrans was measured on 3-month-old salt-tolerant Rangpur lime growing on either loamy sand, sand, or organic mix and on 4-month-old salt-sensitive Sweet lime in organic mix. Salinity treatments were initiated by watering daily with 25 mol/m³ NaCl + 3.3 mol/m³ CaCl₂ for 3 days and every other day with 50 mol/m³ NaC1 + 6.6 mol/m³ CaC1₂ for one week, with no salt (NS) treatments as controls. Salinity was discontinued in one treatment (DS) by leaching with tap water prior to inoculation with nematodes, whereas the continuous salinity (CS) treatment remained unchanged. Overall, in Rangpur lime organic soil supported the highest population densities of T. semipenetrans, followed by loamy sand and sand. The DS treatment resulted in the highest (P ≤ 0.05) mean population densities of T. semipenetrans in the three soil types. Similarly, the DS treatment in Sweet lime resulted in the highest (P ≤ 0.05) nematode populations. The DS treatment predisposed citrus to nematode infection through accumulated salt stress, whereas leaching soluble salt in soil solution offered nematodes a suitable nonosmotic habitat. Nematode females under the DS treatment also had the highest (P ≤ 0.05) fecundity.  相似文献
