Background

The Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) are devices allowing direct communication between the brain of a user and a machine. This technology can be used by disabled people in order to improve their independence and maximize their capabilities such as finding an object in the environment. Such devices can be realized by the non-invasive measurement of information from the cortex by electroencephalography (EEG).

Methods

Our work proposes a novel BCI system that consists of controlling a robot arm based on the user's thought. Four subjects (1 female and 3 males) aged between 20 and 29 years have participated to our experiment. They have been instructed to imagine the execution of movements of the right hand, the left hand, both right and left hands or the movement of the feet depending on the protocol established.EMOTIV EPOC headset was used to record neuronal electrical activities from the subject's scalp, these activities were then sent to the computer for analysis. Feature extraction was performed using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method combined with the Fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectrum within the frequency band responsible for sensorimotor rhythms (8 Hz–22 Hz).These features were then fed into a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier based on a Radial Base Function (RBF) whose outputs were translated into commands to control the robot arm.

Results

The proposed BCI enabled the control of the robot arm in the four directions: right, left, up and down, achieving an averaged accuracy of 85.45% across all the subjects.

Conclusion

The results obtained would encourage, with further developments, the use of the proposed BCI to perform more complex tasks such as execution of successive movements or stopping the execution once a searched object is detected. This would provide a useful assistance means for people with motor impairment.  相似文献

Hematopoiesis is a complicated process involving a series of biological sub-processes that lead to the formation of various blood components. A widely accepted model of early hematopoiesis proceeds from long-term hematopoietic stem cells (LT-HSCs) to multipotent progenitors (MPPs) and then to lineage-committed progenitors. However, the molecular mechanisms of early hematopoiesis have not been fully characterized. In this study, we applied a computational strategy to identify the gene expression signatures distinguishing three types of closely related hematopoietic cells collected in recent studies: (1) hematopoietic stem cell/multipotent progenitor cells; (2) LT-HSCs; and (3) hematopoietic progenitor cells. Each cell in these cell types was represented by its gene expression profile among a total number of 20,475 genes. The expression features were analyzed by a Monte-Carlo Feature Selection (MCFS) method, resulting in a feature list. Then, the incremental feature selection (IFS) and a support vector machine (SVM) optimized with a sequential minimum optimization (SMO) algorithm were employed to access the optimal classifier with the highest Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) value of 0.889, in which 6698 features were used to represent cells. In addition, through an updated program of MCFS method, seventeen decision rules can be obtained, which can classify the three cell types with an overall accuracy of 0.812. Using a literature review, both the rules and the top features used for building the optimal classifier were confirmed to be commonly used or potential biological markers for distinguishing the three cell types of HSPCs. 目的:探究将统计学习方法应用于心理测验所得的大量数据进行学习分析的可行性,并基于探究结果对飞行职业的人格特征进行进一步探索,为飞行人员的选拔及评估提供新的思路。方法:从某航空公司随机抽取1020名男性被试,其中飞行人员510名,非飞行人员510名,采用卡特尔16项人格测试对其进行测验,施测后对得到的16项因子分采用支持向量机就随机划分的训练组和测试组进行学习,分析学习结果。结果:挑选出4项因子作为分类的特征因子,基于线性支持向量机构建的分类器在交叉验证下的平均正确率为64%。结论:采用SVM构建的分类器具有一定的可靠性和有效性。  相似文献

Determining the genetic factors in a disease is crucial to elucidating its molecular basis. This task is challenging due to a lack of information on gene function. The integration of large-scale functional genomics data has proven to be an effective strategy to prioritize candidate disease genes. Mitochondrial disorders are a prevalent and heterogeneous class of diseases that are particularly amenable to this approach. Here we explain the application of integrative approaches to the identification of mitochondrial disease genes. We first examine various datasets that can be used to evaluate the involvement of each gene in mitochondrial function. The data integration methodology is then described, accompanied by examples of common implementations. Finally, we discuss how gene networks are constructed using integrative techniques and applied to candidate gene prioritization. Relevant public data resources are indicated. This report highlights the success and potential of data integration as well as its applicability to the search for mitochondrial disease genes.  相似文献

Identifying prokaryotes in silico is commonly based on DNA sequences. In experiments where DNA sequences may not be immediately available, we need to have a different approach to detect prokaryotes based on RNA or protein sequences. N-formylmethionine (fMet) is known as a typical characteristic of prokaryotes. A web tool has been implemented here for predicting prokaryotes through detecting the N-formylmethionine residues in protein sequences. The predictor is constructed using support vector machine. An online predictor has been implemented using Python. The implemented predictor is able to achieve the total prediction accuracy 80% with the specificity 80% and the sensitivity 81%.  相似文献

The present work investigates the influence of the support surface on the loading and the enzymatic activity of the immobilized Pseudomonas fluorescens lipase. Different porous materials, polypropylene (Accurel), polymethacrylate (Sepabeads EC-EP), silica (SBA-15 and surface modified SBA-15), and an organosilicate (MSE), were used as supports. The immobilized biocatalysts were compared towards sunflower oil ethanolysis for the sustainable production of biodiesel. Since the supports have very different structural (ordered hexagonal and disordered) and textural features (surface area, pore size, and total pore volume), in order to consider only the effect of the support surface, experiments were performed at low surface coverage. The different functional groups occurring on the support surface allowed either physical (Accurel, MSE, and SBA-15) or chemical adsorption (Sepabeads EC-EP and SBA-15–R-CHO). The surface-modified SBA-15 (SBA-15–R-CHO) allowed the highest loading. The lipase immobilized on the MSE was the most active biocatalyst. However, in terms of catalytic efficiency (activity/loading) the lipase immobilized on the SBA-15, the support that allowed the lowest loading, was the most efficient.  相似文献

It is widely considered that it is not appropriate to treat β-pairs in isolation, since other secondary structural models (such as helices, coils), protein topology and protein tertiary structures would limit β-strand pairing. However, to understand the underlying mechanisms of β-sheet formation, studies ought to be performed separately on more concrete aspects. In this study, we focus on the parallel or antiparallel orientation of β-strands. First, statistical analysis was performed on the relative frequencies of the interstrand amino acid pairs within parallel and antiparallel β-strands. Consequently, features were extracted by singular value decomposition from the statistical results. By using the support vector machine to distinguish the features extracted from the two types of β-strands, high accuracy was achieved (up to 99.4%). This suggests that the interstrand amino acid pairs play a significant role in determining the parallel or antiparallel orientation of β-strands. These results may provide useful information for developing other useful algorithms to examine to the β-strand folding pathways, and could eventually lead to protein structure predictions.  相似文献

We compared the ability of three machine learning algorithms (linear discriminant analysis, decision tree, and support vector machines) to automate the classification of calls of nine frogs and three bird species. In addition, we tested two ways of characterizing each call to train/test the system. Calls were characterized with four standard call variables (minimum and maximum frequencies, call duration and maximum power) or eleven variables that included three standard call variables (minimum and maximum frequencies, call duration) and a coarse representation of call structure (frequency of maximum power in eight segments of the call). A total of 10,061 isolated calls were used to train/test the system. The average true positive rates for the three methods were: 94.95% for support vector machine (0.94% average false positive rate), 89.20% for decision tree (1.25% average false positive rate) and 71.45% for linear discriminant analysis (1.98% average false positive rate). There was no statistical difference in classification accuracy based on 4 or 11 call variables, but this efficient data reduction technique in conjunction with the high classification accuracy of the SVM is a promising combination for automated species identification by sound. By combining automated digital recording systems with our automated classification technique, we can greatly increase the temporal and spatial coverage of biodiversity data collection.  相似文献
