Summary Iron tolerance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) was investigated using an oxygen depleted hydroculture system. Treatment with high concentrations of Fe2+ induced yellowing and bronzing symptoms as well as iron coatings at the root surface. Root and shoot growth were inhibited by increasing iron concentration in the medium. All symptoms were more pronounced in an iron sensitive cultivar (IR 64) compared to an iron tolerant one (IR 9764-45-2). Superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activity of root extracts of IR 97 were about twice that of IR 64 in untreated control plants. No significant increase of peroxidase activity was detected with increasing iron concentration in the medium. Physiological mechanisms causing reduction of metabolic rate during torpor in heterothermic endotherms are controversial. The original view that metabolic rate is reduced below the basal metabolic rate because the lowered body temperature reduces tissue metabolism has been challenged by a recent hypothesis which claims that metabolic rate during torpor is actively downregulated and is a function of the differential between body temperature and ambient temperature, rather than body temperature per se. In the present study, both the steady-state metabolic rate and body temperature of torpid stripe-faced dunnarts, Sminthopsis macroura (Dasyuridae: Marsupialia), showed two clearly different phases in response to change of air temperature. At air temperatures between 14 and 30°C, metabolic rate and body temperature decreased with air temperature, and metabolic rate showed an exponential relationship with body temperature (r 2=0.74). The Q 10 for metabolic rate was between 2 and 3 over the body temperature range of 16 to 32°C. The difference between body temperature and air temperature over this temperature range did not change significantly, and the metabolic rate was not related to the difference between body temperature and air temperature (P=0.35). However, the apparent conductance decreased with air temperature. At air temperatures below 14°C, metabolic rate increased linearly with the decrease of air temperature (r 2=0.58) and body temperature was maintained above 16°C, largely independent of air temperature. Over this air temperature range, metabolic rate was positively correlated with the difference between body temperature and air temperature (r 2=0.61). Nevertheless, the Q 10 for metabolic rate between normothermic and torpid thermoregulating animals at the same air temperature was also in the range of 2–3. These results suggest that over the air temperature range in which body temperature of S. macroura was not metabolically defended, metabolic rate during daily torpor was largely a function of body temperature. At air temperatures below 14°C, at which the torpid animals showed an increase of metabolic rate to regulate body temperature, the negative relationship between metabolic rate and air temperature was a function of the differential between body temperature and air temperature as during normothermia. In order to reassess previous hypotheses concerning dental size reduction of the posterior teeth during Pleistocene human evolution, current fossil dental evidence is examined. This evidence includes the large sample of hominid teeth found in recent excavations (1984–1993) in the Sima de los Huesos Middle Pleistocene cave site of the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain). The lower fourth premolars and molars of the Atapuerca hominids, probably older than 300 Kyr, have dimensions similar to those of modern humans. Further, these hominids share the derived state of other features of the posterior teeth with modern humans, such as a similar relative molar size and frequent absence of the hypoconulid, thus suggesting a possible case of parallelism. We believe that dietary changes allowed size reduction of the posterior teeth during the Middle Pleistocene, and the present evidence suggests that the selective pressures that operated on the size variability of these teeth were less restrictive than what is assumed by previous models of dental reduction. Thus, the causal relationship between tooth size decrease and changes in food-preparation techniques during the Pleistocene should be reconsidered. Moreover, the present evidence indicates that the differential reduction of the molars cannot be explained in terms of restriction of available growth space. The molar crown area measurements of a modern human sample were also investigated. The results of this study, as well as previous similar analyses, suggest that a decrease of the rate of cell proliferation, which affected the later-forming crown regions to a greater extent, may be the biological process responsible for the general and differential dental size reduction that occurred during human evolution. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A freshwater sediment from a ditch of a peat grassland near Zegveld (Province of Utrecht, The Netherlands) was investigated for its potential methanogenic and syntrophic activity and the influence of sulfate and nitrate on these potential activities. Methanogenesis started after a 10 days lagphase. After 35–40 days aceticlastic methanogens were sufficiently enriched to cause a net decrease of acetate. In the presence of sulfate methane formation was only slightly affected. The addition of nitrate led to an outcompetion of aceticlastic methanogens by nitrate reducers. When inorganic electron acceptors were absent, substrates like propionate and butyrate were converted by syntrophic methanogenic consortia. Addition of inorganic electron acceptors resulted in an outcompetition of the syntrophic propionate and butyrate degrading consortia by the sulfate and nitrate reducers.  相似文献

Settlement of male great reed warblers in the breeding ground was highly asynchronous at Lake Biwa in Japan. It took over 1 month from the appearance of the first male to a saturation in number of males. In resource-defense-polygyny, males are expected to try to defend as large an area as possible in the optimal habitat. In fact, a small number of the earliest settling males divided up the breeding ground almost completely as territories among themselves and these were later reduced in size with the addition of later settlers. The reduction was not due to a seasonal decline of aggressiveness on the part of the owners but to a higher level of intrusion pressure by later arriving males. The neighbor-neighbor relationship, once established, was rather stable. Home range overlap was small and territorial contacts were few between neighbors. Territorial boundaries seem not to shift despite the addition of new males as long as the neighbors were the same. The stable relationships between neighbors are expected to help the earlier resident to maintain his large and good territories throughout the breeding season and hence polygyny is favored in this species.  相似文献

Multiple ovulations were induced with a pituitary extract in mares, and the development of multiple conceptuses was monitored daily by ultrasound on days 11 to 40. The incidence of abortion (loss of all embryos) was not significantly different between mares with multiple embryos (5 38 mares; 13%) and mares with singletons (4 36 ; 11%). Embryo reduction (elimination of excess embryos) was not detected during the embryo mobility phase (days 11-15) or on the day of fixation of embryos (day 16) in any of 38 mares with multiple embryos. The incidence of postfixation embryo reduction for mares with twins was 64% (18 28 ); however, the incidence for unilateral twins (17 19 ; 89%) was greater (P<0.01) than for bilateral twins (1 9 ; 11%). Reduction of unilateral twin embryos seemed to occur earlier (53% before day 20 and 82% before day 30) than for the set of bilateral twins (day 36). The remaining embryo in all mares in which embryo reduction occurred seemed normal in size and appearance on the last day of examination. However, in four of eighteen mares in which unilateral reduction occurred, the umbilical cord of the remaining embryo was attached in the ventral hemisphere of the all antochorion. This apparent disorientation was not seen in any of 16 bilaterally located embryos or in 16 singletons.  相似文献

Sulfur is essential for the production of certain amino acids in plants. As amino acid sulfur is the major form of sulfur in trees, there is a strong relationship between organic S and organic N in tree tissue. Sulfur deficiencies occur in parts of southeastern Australia and northwestern North America, remote from pollutant inputs. Since bilogical S requirements of forests are modest (< 5 kg · ha–1 yr–1 for net vegetative increment), however, atmospheric S inputs in polluted regions (10–80 kg · ha–1 yr–1 ) often exceed not only the forest ecosystem S requirement but also its ability to biologically accumulate S. There is some increase in the SO2– 4–S content of forest vegetation in response to elevated atmospheric S inputs, but this capacity is apparently easily saturated. Ferredoxin-NADP reductase (FNR) and ferredoxin form a complex when the former is membrane-bound as they do when both components are in solution, with the same dissociation constant. The rate constant of NADP photoreduction, first order with respect to the complex, is more than 20-times higher when FNR is membrane-bound than when the enzyme is in solution. The Arrhenius activation energy is identical in both conditions. These observations are interpreted in terms of ‘entropic catalysis’ of NADP reduction by the thylakoid-bound FNR.  相似文献

Sulphur-heterotrophic growth exhibited a dual response to the expression of sulphate-assimilating enzymes. The level of ATP-sulphurylase (EC 2.7.7.4) appeared repressed while sulphite reductase (EC 1.8.7.1) and O-acetyl-l-serine sulphhydrylase (EC 4.2.99.8) were derepressed and coordinated in their occurrence. The capability of the cells to reduce adenylylphosphosulphate or 3-phospho adenylylphosphosulphate to cysteine coincided with the activity of sulphite reductase. Summary Isotopic as well as non-isotopic methods were used to assess symbiotic nitrogen fixation within eight soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars grown at 20 and 100 kg N/ha levels of nitrogen fertilizer under field conditions.The15N methodology revealed large differences between soybean cultivars in their abilities to support nitrogen fixation. In almost all cases, the application of 100 kg N/ha resulted in lower N2 fixed in soybean than at 20 kg N/ha in the first year of the study. However, N2 fixed in one cultivar, Dunadja, was not significantly affected by the higher rate of N fertilizer application. These results were confirmed by measurements of acetylene reduction activity, nodule dry weight and N2 fixed as measured by the difference method. Further proof of differences in N2 fixed within soybean cultivars and the ability of Dunadja to fix similar amounts of N2 at 20 and 100 kg N/ha was obtained during a second year experiment. Dunadja yield was affected by N fertilizer and produced larger yield at 100 kg N/ha than at 20 kg N/ha. This type of cultivar could be particularly useful in situations where soil N levels are high or where there is need to apply high amounts of N fertilizer.The present study reveals the great variability between legume germplasms in the ability to fix N2 at different inorganic N levels, and also the potential that exists in breeding for nitrogen fixation associative traits. The15N methodology offers a unique tool to evaluate germplasms directly in the field for their N2 fixation abilities at different N fertilizer levels.  相似文献
