Summary This review examines interactions between bacteria and the biologically non-essential metal, silver. Aspects of silver toxicity, tolerance and accumulation (possible binding and uptake as opposed to energy-dependent transport) in bacteria are discussed. In addition, plasmid biology is examined briefly since little information is available on the exact mechanism(s) of plasmid-endoced silver resistance in bacteria.  相似文献

Summary Tubercles of Pseudotsuga menziesii consisted of clusters of ectomycorrhizae surrounded by a peridiumlike rind. Energy dispersive spectroscopy demonstrated that crystals found in the zone of loose hyphae extending from the inner rind to the mantle of each root probably contain calcium oxalate. Inner mantle and Hartig net hyphae showed a labyrinthine branching pattern and stored carbohydrates and protein. The Hartig net formed up to inner cortical cells which had thickened, darkly stained walls. Bacteria were located either along with hyphae within the rind or as colonies on the surface of the tubercle.  相似文献

对武汉地区氧化塘中的细菌数量、细菌种类、种群组成、优势种及群落多样性进行了初步研究。从氧化塘中分离的细菌经鉴定属于12个属,主要有假单胞菌属(Pseudomonas)、棒杆菌属(corynebacterium)、无色杆菌属(Achromobacter)和微杆菌属(Microbacterium),其它菌属是芽孢杆菌属(Bacillus)、色杆菌属(Chromobacterium)、短杆菌属(Brevibacterium)、葡萄球菌属(Staphylococcus)、微球菌属(Micrococcus)、黄杆菌属(Flavobacterium)、埃希氏菌属(Escherichia)和链球菌属(Streptococcus)。在5个小塘中,细菌数量、种群组成和群落多样性指数都有不同,这与各塘的污染程度有关。由此,多样性指数可用于监测氧化塘的净化效果。  相似文献

Summary Soil columns were exposed to balanced (low Na+) or unbalanced (high Na+) high-salt solutions for a period of 7 days followed by 7 days of stress reflief. Total numbers of bacteria released into the perfusates rose under both types of stress, but the proportion of displaced bacteria that were viable fell significantly. Relief from both types of stress stimulated rapid increases in the number of viable micro-organisms released from soil. Examination of the soils at the end of the relief periods revealed that soils exposed to stress contained more viable bacteria than the non-stressed controls. However, high levels of balanced stress led to a significant decrease in species diversity within the microbial population, but a similar effect was not observed in soils exposed to unbalanced, high Na+ stress. These results suggest that, while salt stress may cause a significant reduction in the number of microorganisms in a soil, a large portion of the microbial population can rapidly adapt to marked changes in salinity.  相似文献

Summary Survival ofPseudomonas syringae pv.lachrymans with seedling cucumber roots, root washings, rhizosphere soil, and nonrhizosphere soil was determined 7–8 days after the soil surface was watered with a cell suspension of the bacterium. Plants were in pots in the green-house and soil was not sterilized. Survival was best with roots and root washings, next best in rhizosphere soil, and poor in nonrhizosphere soil.  相似文献

Antisera have been developed against the wholecell antigens of Desulfovibrio africanus Benghazi and Walvis Bay, D. vulgaris Hildenborough, D. salexigens British Guiana, D. gigas, and D. desulfuricans Essex 6. An enzymelinked immunoadsorption assay (ELISA) was developed to measure the reaction of these antisera with the homologous and heterologous antigens. The ELISA method demonstrated a reaction between pre-immune sera and cells of D. africanus, D. gigas and D. desulfuricans, suggesting the presence of a lectin-like substance on these cell surfaces. Extensive cross-reactions were seen between the antisera and heterologous cells, suggesting the sharing of a number of surface antigens amongst the Desulfovibrio. Summary Hydrogenase and nitrogenase activities of sulfate-reducing bacteria allow their adaptation to different nutritional habits even under adverse conditions. These exceptional capabilities of adaptation are important factors in the understanding of their predominant role in problems related to anaerobic metal corrosion. Although the D2–H+ exchange reaction indicated thatDesulfovibrio desulfuricans strain Berre-Sol andDesulfovibrio gigas hydrogenases were reversible, the predominant activity in vivo was hydrogen uptake. Hydrogen production was restricted to some particular conditions such as sulfate or nitrogen starvation. Under diazotrophic conditions, a transient hydrogen evolution was followed by uptake when dinitrogen was effectively fixed. In contrast, hydrogen evolution proceeded when acetylene was substituted as the nitrogenase substrate. Hydrogen can thus serve as an electron donor in sulfate reduction and nitrogen metabolism.  相似文献

Summary Bacteria isolated from groundwater aquifer core materials of pristine aquifers at Lula and Pickett, OK, and from a site with a history of aromatic hydrocarbon contamination and natural renovation located at Conroe, TX, were screened for the presence of plasmid DNA by alkaline or enzyme lysis and agarose gel techniques. Some of the isolates were also subjected to taxonomic tests in addition to screening for resistance to antibiotics, tolerance to heavy metal salts, and bacteriocin production. There was no significant difference in the distribution of the traits usually associated with plasmid occurrence in isolates from the three sites. These traits, which occurred at low frequencies, were not restricted to plasmid-bearing strains of the communities. Plasmids were found in isolates from all three sites, but on the average there was a significantly higher percentage of isolates containing plasmids in the samples from Conroe (19.4%) than from either Lula (1.8%) or Pickett (7.7%). The sizes of the plasmids found ranged between 3.5 and 202 kilobases but, for the Conroe samples, many more isolates (67%) contained smaller plasmids (<10 kb) rather than larger ones. No plasmids were found in bacteria recovered from naturally renovated aquifer material at the Conroe site.  相似文献

Ribosomal subunits of Caldariella acidophila (max.growth temp., 90°C) have been compared to subunits of Bacillus acidocaldarius (max. growth temp., 70°C) and Escherichia coli (max. growth temp., 47°C) with respect to (a) bihelical content of rRNA; (b) G·C content of bihelical domains and (c) tightness of rRNA-protein interactions. The principal results are as follows. 1. Subunits of C. acidophila ribosomes (Tm = 90–93°C) exhibit considerable thermal tolerance over their B. acidocaldarius (Tm = 77°C) and E. coli counterparts (Tm = 72°C). 2. Based on the ‘melting’ hyperchromicities of the intact ribosomal subunits a 51–55% fraction of the nucleotides appears to participate in hydrogen-bonded base pairing regardless of ribosome source, whereas a larger fraction, 67–70%, appears to be involved in hydrogen bonding in the naked rRNA species. 3. The G·C content of bihelical domains of both free and ribosome-bound rRNA increases with increasing thermophily; based on hyperchromicity dispersion spectra of intact subunits and free rRNA, the bihelical parts of C. acidophila rRNA are estimated to contain 63–64% G·C, compared to 58.5% G·C for B. acidocaldarius and 55% G·C for E. coli. 4. The increment in ribosome Tm values with increasing thermophily is greater than the increase in Tm for the free rRNA, indicating that within ribosomes bihelical domains of the thermophile rRNA species are stabilized more efficiently than their mesophile counterparts by proteins or/ and other component(s). 5. The efficiency of the rRNA-protein interactions in the mesophile and thermophile ribosomes has been probed by comparing the releases, with LiCl-urea, of the rRNA species from the corresponding ribosomal subunits stuck to a Celite column through their protein moiety; it has been established that the release of C. acidophila rRNA from the Celite-bound ribosomes occurs at salt-urea concentrations about 4-fold higher than those required to release rRNA from Celite-bound E. coli ribosomes. 6. Compared to E. coli, the C. acidophila 50 and 30 S ribosomal subunits are considerably less susceptible to treatment designed to promote ribosome unfolding through depletion of magnesium ions.  相似文献

Recently isolated coryneform hydrogen bacteria were investigated under taxonomical aspects. Strains 7 C, RH 10, and 14 g are characterized by the snapping type of cell division, 68.5 to 69.7% GC content, dl-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall, content of metachromatic granules, weak utilization of sugars and inhibitory effect of citrate. The strains are placed to the group 1—genus Corynebacterium—of the classification of coryneform bacteria of Yamada and Komagata (1972) and the name Corynebacterium autotrophicum sp.nov. is proposed.Strains 11 X and RH 12 are characterized by the bending type of cell division, a GC content of 70.2 and 70.5%, ll-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall, absence of metachromatic granules, utilization of several sugars and no changes in cell morphology by citrate. The strains have to be placed to group 6 of coryneform bacteria.  相似文献
