  • 1 There is growing appreciation of climatic effects on insect population dynamics at the margins of distribution limits. Climatic effects might be less important and/or involve different drivers and processes near the centre of distributions.
  • 2 We evaluated the effects of interannual variation in temperatures, radiation and precipitation on populations of pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa in Central–South Portugal, a low altitude area with a relatively mild Mediterranean climate near the centre of the north–south range of the species.
  • 3 We tested for effects of climate on mortality of young larvae, growth rates, final larval mass and fecundity.
  • 4 Results indicated high mortality of early instars associated with low minimum and maximum daily temperatures and low precipitation. Low minimum temperatures were further associated with high parasitism by the larval parasitoid Phryxe caudata (Rondani) (Diptera, Tachinidae). Furthermore, larval growth rates were higher with high solar radiation during December and January, which was itself negatively related to precipitation and air temperature. Slow larval growth rates led to lower final mass at pupation in the spring, and smaller egg masses and smaller initial colony sizes during the next autumn.
  • 5 Thus climatic factors, and temperature in particular, apparently contributed to population dynamics of T. pityocampa in the core of its distribution, as well as at its northern limits. The most specific climatic parameters of importance, however, and the connections between climate, physiology and insect demographics in the core area were clearly different from northern areas.

The study of fossil Fishes preserved in the «calcaires à Bythinies of Montmeyan, la Mourotte and Saint-Julien-le-Montagné basins (Var. France), makes possible the demonstration of their referal to the family Characidae: These Fishes, here mentioned as Eurocharax tourainei nov. gen., nov. sp., clearly differ from the Lower Eocene Characid fishes of Languedoc and Paris Basin by their set of teeth. There is a high burden of mental and neurological disorders in Africa. Nevertheless, there appears to be an under-representation of African ancestry populations in large-scale genomic studies. Here, we evaluated the extent of under-representation of Africans in neurogenomic studies in the GWAS Catalog. We found 569 neurogenomic studies, of which 88.9% were exclusively focused on people with European ancestry and the remaining 11.1% having African ancestry cases included. In terms of population, only 1.2% of the total populations involved in these 569 GWAS studies were of African descent. Further, most of the individuals in the African ancestry category were identified to be African-Americans/Afro-Caribbeans, highlighting the huge under-representation of homogenous African populations in large-scale neurogenomic studies. Efforts geared at establishing strong collaborative ties with European/American researchers, maintaining freely accessible biobanks and establishing comprehensive African genome data repositories to track African genome variations are critical for propelling neurogenomics/precision medicine in Africa.  相似文献

An incomplete ‘mummy’ from the Phosphorites du Quercy (presumed Eocene) was identified as a salamander during the 19th century. The specimen has now been computed tomography (CT) scanned, and this revealed the incomplete skeleton (with perfectly preserved bones) and soft tissues (lung). The fossil represents a new, well‐characterized taxon. Despite the absence of the skull, several features allow a phylogenetic analysis. The fossil belongs to pseudosaurian caudates; it is tentatively assigned to the Salamandridae, although affinities with Plethodontidae cannot be definitely ruled out.  相似文献

Solubilization of the specific mitochondrial isoenzyme of creatine kinase (CKm) from rabbit heart mitochondria by treatment with SH group reagents has been studied. From the various compounds tested only the negatively charged organomercurials are able to induce an extensive solubilization of the enzyme. This effect is fully reversible since the solubilized enzyme readily reassociates with the membrane when the bound organomercurial is removed by treatment of the homogenate by an excess of dithiothreitol. Solubilization by negatively charged organomercurials can be partly prevented by pretreatment of mitochondria with either disulfide or uncharged organomercurials. No clear-cut relationship has been pointed out when the amount of SH titrated by various reagents has been compared with the extent of CKm solubilization. More detailed studies with para-chloromercuribenzoate (pCMB) show that extensive CKm solubilization (about 75%) occurs for pCMB concentration as low as 25 microM, whereas pronounced inhibition of the enzyme is observed only for concentrations greater than 200 microM. By cross-reassociation of enzyme solubilized either by para-hydroxymercuribenzoate (pHMB) or by 20 mM sodium phosphate (NaPi) with mitochondria depleted of CKm by pHMB or by NaPi treatment, SH groups whose titration impedes CKm reassociation with the mitochondrial membrane have been tentatively located on the enzyme. Thus, negatively charged organomercurials, could induce a reversible conformational modification of the enzyme which is no longer able to bind on the inner mitochondrial membrane. Furthermore, our results show that the binding of an excess of mitochondrial CK, which has been previously reported, could reflect unspecific binding since it occurs only on mitoplasts incubated in very hypotonic medium, but not in isotonic medium.  相似文献
