Many animals rely on stored energy through periods of high energy demand or low energy availability or both. A variety of mechanisms may be employed to attain and conserve energy for such periods. Wild grey seals demonstrate seasonal patterns of energy storage and foraging behaviour that appear to maximize the allocation of energy to reproduction—a period characterized by both high energy demand and low food availability. We examined seasonal patterns in resting rates of oxygen consumption as a proxy for metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition in female grey seals (four adults and six juveniles), testing the hypothesis that adults would show seasonal changes in RMR related to the reproductive cycle but that juveniles would not. There was significant seasonal variation in rates of resting oxygen consumption of adult females, with rates being highest in the spring and declining through the summer months into autumn. This variation was not related to changes in water temperature. Adults increased in total body mass and in fat content during the same spring to autumn period that RMR declined. RMR of juveniles showed no clear seasonal patterns, but did increase with increasing mass. Porcine myoglobin cDNA clones have been isolated from a cDNA library prepared from enriched heart-myoglobin mRNA. Sequence analysis revealed 59 nucleotides (nt) in the 5'-untranslated, 462 nt in the amino acid (aa)-coding, and 590 nt in the 3'-untranslated regions. The myoglobin cDNA showed a high G + C content (60%). When the nt sequence of the porcine myoglobin cDNA is compared with those of seal and human myoglobin cDNAs deduced from the corresponding genomic myoglobin genes [Blanchetot et al., Nature 301 (1983) 732-734; Weller et al., EMBO J. 3 (1984) 439-446; Akaboshi, Gene 33 (1985) 241-249], a high degree of homology is observed in the 5'-untranslated region and in parts of the 3'-untranslated region, as well as in the coding region. 相似文献
Antarctic phocid seals and particularly the crabeater (Lobodon carcinophagus) have been observed to display a diurnal cycle in their propensity to haul out on pack ice where they are visible for census. The fact that they are not visible for much of the 24-h period means that density estimates made over broad geographic areas at various times of the day statistically confound this cycle with geographic variability. Limitation of census observations to times of peak haulout results in extreme logistical difficulties and/or considerable reduction in sample size upon which to base population estimates. Reduced sample size results in high variability in population estimates and broad confidence bands. To develop a model with which to correct density estimates for variability due to diurnal cycle, a series of stationary censuses at fixed locations in the Antarctic continental ice pack was made over significant fractions of several days. A unimodal polynomial model for the observed density variation in any one location was statistically significant; a similar model combining multiple locations with densities standardized to peak daily values was also significant. The latter model was used to make corrections for time of day to density estimates in three test data sets taken over broad geographic areas of the Antarctic. Statistical simulation (bootstrap) methods were used to determine if variances of corrected density estimates were lower than those based on uncorrected observations taken only during the peak haulout times of the day. Results were that 95% interval estimates for corrected densities were narrowed to between 40% and 61% of the uncorrected estimates. While there are additional possible sources of variation in haulout tendency, pending further data collection and analyses, the model developed represents a considerably more precise methodology than either averaging over haulout variability or limiting observations to peak daily periods. 相似文献
Northern elephant seal ( Mirounga angustirostris )pups undergo extended periods of terrestrial aphagia after weaning and exhibit a paradoxical fasting hyperglycemia. To investigate the details of glucose metabolism during this period, reversible and irreversible radiotracers were used to determine the body mass of glucose, and rates of glucose turnover, recycling, and oxidation in fasting seal pups. A typical 75 kg pup has a glucose mass of about 4.5 g (60 mg/kg), and a blood glucose concentration of about 174 mg/dl. Blood glucose removal rate was about 30 grams per day (17 mg/kg · h-1), but less than 2.5% of this glucose was oxidized, contributing less than 1% of the total metabolic rate. About 20% of the glucose pool was removed from the blood per hour, yielding a turnover time in the vascular space of about five hours. Most glucose removed from the blood was returned to the blood by recycling. Such recycling may contribute to mechanisms which prolong survival during fasting, such as high rates of triacyclglycerol turnover, synthesis of new protein pools, low ketone levels, and the Cori cycle which is important during diving. 相似文献

Measurements of growth, activity and energy consumption and estimates of milk intake were made in free-living, nursing ringed seal (Phoca hispida) pups. This was accomplished through the simultaneous use of time-depth recorders and the doubly labelled water technique. The pups spent an average of 52±7% of their time hauled out on the ice, 37±5% of the time in the water at the surface, and 11±5% of the time diving. Average daily mass gain of the pups (n=3) throughout the duration of the study period was 0.35±0.08 kg. The composition of the mass gain was 76% fat, 6% protein and 18% water. The total water flux was measured to be 52±10 ml·kg-1·day-1. Average CO2 production was 0.85±0.16 ml·g-1·h-1, corresponding to a field metabolic rate of 0.55±0.10 MJ·kg-1·day-1, or 3.8±0.6 times the predicted basal metabolic rate based on body size (Kleiber 1975). Average daily milk intake was estimated to be 1379±390 ml. The field metabolic rate for the different components of seal pup activity budgets were calculated to be FMRhaul out=1.34 BMR, FMRsurface=6.44 BMR, and FMRdiving=5.88 BMR.Abbreviations BMR

The Baikal seal ( Phoca sibirica ) is confined to Lake Baikal in southern Siberia. The breeding distribution of seals in winter, when the lake is frozen over, is fairly well known, whereas their movements and foraging behaviors have been relatively unstudied. With satellite-linked radio transmitters, we documented the movements and dive patterns of four juvenile Baikal seals from autumn through spring. The seals moved extensively in the lake, each covering minimal distances of 400–1,600 km between September and early May. They spent little time hauled out from September through May and, apparently, dived continuously. Dives were mostly to depths of lo-50 m, though a few exceeded 300 m. Most lasted between 2 and 6 mm, within theoretical aerobic dive limits, although a few exceeded 40 min. The exceptionally long dives occurred while the seals were in areas of extensive ice cover, suggesting that they were, perhaps, under ice-pilotage in search of breathing holes rather than foraging dives. Otherwise, the dive performances of these Baikal seals were, relative to body mass, similar to those of other well-studied phocids. Movements and dive patterns of seals appeared to be primarily associated with seasonal and die1 movements of their primary prey, golomyanka and sculpins, and secondarily correlated with patterns of ice formation and thaw. 相似文献
Wild-caught female harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina ) were classified as sexually mature or immature on the basis of standard body length (< 125 cm immature, > 125 cm mature) and plasma progesterone concentrations measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a technique usable in the field. Sexually mature females were classified as pregnant or non-pregnant on the basis of their plasma progesterone concentrations. Of 28 wild mature female harbor seals caught in the Moray Firth, N.E. Scotland, between the end of February and the end of May, 79% had plasma progesterone concentrations greater than 60 nmol liter−1, the lowest plasma progesterone concentration measured in one of eight females later observed with a pup, and were diagnosed as pregnant. A linear discriminant function, calculated to provide a method of distinguishing pregnant and non-pregnant females, predicted 100% of non-pregnant females and 95.8% of pregnant females using plasma progesterone concentration, standard length, and month of capture as parameters. Plasma progesterone concentrations were less than 30 nmol liter−1 in all mature and immature males and immature females. Ovaries from 14 female Hawaiian monk seals, O-24 yr of age, collected from the northwestern Hawaiian Islands were analyzed by gross and histological examination for the presence of corpora hemorrhagica (CH), lutea (CL), albicantia (CA), and dominant follicles. Seven seals, 5-24 yr of age, were mature females, and another seven seals, O-5 yr of age, were immature based on the presence or absence of CL and CA in the ovaries. Two 5-yr-old seals did not have CL and CA, but one J-yr-old and both 6-yr-old seals had CL or CA. In addition, the weight of the more active ovary increased at 5 yr of age, indicating that puberty in these female Hawaiian monk seals occurred about 5 yr of age. The total number of CL and CA was significantly correlated to the ovarian weight, but not age of the seals, indicating that visible CA of Hawaiian monk seals probably degenerate within a year. If an ovulation resulted in pregnancy, we assumed that the resulting CL from that pregnancy persisted throughout gestation and regressed approximately 2 yr after ovulation. However, the CL of pregnancy were not easily differentiated from cyclic CL that did not result in pregnancy. Four of seven mature seals were clearly polyestrous from the analyses of their ovaries and reproductive histories. The remaining three seals were pregnant in previous consecutive years, and we could not positively determine whether they were also polyestrous. The ovaries from Hawaiian monk seals had unusually large, rounded granular cells containing the aging pigment, lipofuscin. These cells were located between loose fibrous tissues in all regressing CL and CA but were not present in any CH. 相似文献
