Nucleic acids from 41 strains of Metarhizium anisopliae, obtained from different parts of the world were extracted and examined by electrophoresis. Strong bands of double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) were detected in two isolates from Brazil, V215 and V291, which had, respectively, 13 and 9 distinct bands ranging in size from ca. 0.75 to 3.5 kb. Icosahedral virus‐like particles (VLPs) (ca. 33 nm in diameter) were observed by transmission electron microscopy in extracts of these isolates. The VLPs and dsRNA were both absent from a clone of the isolate V291 which had been subcultured successively on solid medium. Bioassays against the aphid Myzus persicae showed no detectable difference in virulence between the clone of V291 which contained dsRNA and the clone that did not. 相似文献

Synopsis Similarities between the freshwater fish faunas of 52 west African rivers have been investigated and three main zoogeographic regions recognized. The Sudanian region includes all rivers from Senegal to the Omo, as well as coastal basins from Ivory Coast to the Cross and the Wouri. The Upper Guinean region comprises the coastal basins from Guinea to Liberia and the Lower Guinean one, the coastal rivers of Cameroon and Gaboon. The Sudanian region can be sub-divided into a Sudanian region sensu stricto, including the Sahelo-Sudanese rivers, and the Eburneo-Ghanean region corresponding to coastal basins from the Cess (or Nipoué, Ivory Coast) to the Pra (Ghana). These delimitations give an highly significant within region faunal homogeneity, even if the effect of geographical proximity between rivers is removed. 21 to 71% of the fish species in each region are endemics. The present patterns of distribution are the result of past climatic and geological events affecting west Africa and, given this framework, the role of alternating wet and dry periods during the early Quarternary is emphasized as well as the importance of mountains as dispersal barriers. Abstract. A model is proposed for the fitting of species-area curves to data from the Stellenbosch region, South Africa. Basic assumptions of the model are finiteness of the number of species in a finite area, and random distribution of plant species over the region. The model involves a distribution of densities of different species, and the parameters of this distribution are useful for describing and classifying communities. The data of the Stellenbosch region suggest that the assumptions of the model break down in areas greater than 500 m2. 相似文献

Population studies on a South African carrageenophyte: Iridaea capensis (Gigartinaceae,Rhodophyta) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
An intertidal population of Iridaea capensis in the south-western Cape Province of South Africa has been studied in detail for a year. The species is generally restricted to sand-inundated rocky shores, which appears not to be the case for Iridaea species in the Pacific. In early winter (June) biomass, plant density and plant size were at a minimum. A small increase in these parameters occurred in August, but there was a massive increase in plant numbers and biomass in October. The largest plants were recorded in summer (February). The population was over 70% sporophytes in April, but switched to almost 80% gametophytes following heavy recruitment between August and October, and remained significantly gametophyte-dominated through April of the following year. Carrageenan levels were high (ca 42% of dry weight) in late winter-spring, and lowest (ca 30–35%) in summer-autumn. Strong offshore wind conditions in early summer caused a reduction in biomass, and it is hypothesized that the associated upwelling of nutrient rich water may be implicated in the lower carrageenan levels at this time. 相似文献

Synopsis African mormyriform and South American gynmotiform fishes are unique among freshwater fishes in their abilities to generate and perceive an electrical field that aids in orientation, prey detection, and communication. Here we present evidence from comparative ecology and morphology that tube-snouted electric fishes of the generaSternarchorhynchus (Apteronotidae) andCampylomormyrus (Mormyridae) may be unique among fishes in their mode of foraging by grasp-suction. The grasp-suction mode of feeding is a specialization for extracting immature stages of aquatic insects that burrow into, or hide within, interstitial spaces and holes in matrices of compacted clay particles that form the channel bottom of many tropical lowland rivers. Ecomorphological implications of the remarkable evolutionary convergence for this specialized mode of foraging by tube-snouted electric fishes provide a challenge to Liem's (1984, 1990) theory of separate aquatic and terrestrial vertebrate feeding modes.Invited Editorial 相似文献

Antibiotic production by strains of Gliocladium virens and its relation to the biocontrol of cotton seedling diseases 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Strains of the fungal antagonist Gliocladium virens were separated into two distinct groups on the basis of secondary metabolite production in vitro. Strains of the ‘P’ group produced the antibiotics gliovirin and heptelidic acid but not the antibiotic gliotoxin and its companion, dimethylgliotoxin. Strains of the ‘Q’ group produced gliotoxin and dimethylgliotoxin but not gliovirin or heptelidic acid. Strains from both groups produced the antibiotic viridin and phytotoxin viridiol. Gliovirin was very inhibitory to Pythium ultimum but had no activity against Rhizoctonia solani, and strains that produce it were more effective seed treatment biocontrol agents of disease incited by P. ultimum. Conversely, gliotoxin was more active against R. solani than against P. ultimum, and strains that produced it were more effective seed treatments for controlling disease incited by R. solani. These results indicate that the antibiotic profiles of strains should be considered when screening strains for biocontrol efficacy, and that it may be necessary to treat seeds with a combination of strains in order to broaden the disease control spectrum. 相似文献

Rainbow lizards (Agama agama) are common in suburban areas throughout Africa, and have an opportunistic foraging strategy, with arthropods being the main prey source. In a coastal resort in southern Togo, West Africa, several individuals in a population were observed while feeding regularly upon non-natural human-made food (pizza) and showing a clear preference for a given type of food versus others that were offered (‘four cheeses’ being the preferred one). The fact that all monitored individuals fed upon a same type of pizza suggests that they may have some chemical cues attracting them. 相似文献

A genealogical concordance approach was used to delineate strains isolated from Acacia dealbata and Acacia mearnsii root nodules in South Africa. These isolates form part of Bradyrhizobium based on 16S rRNA sequence similarity. Phylogenetic analysis of six housekeeping genes (atpD, dnaK, glnII, gyrB, recA and rpoB) confirmed that these isolates represent a novel species, while pairwise average nucleotide identity (ANIb) calculations with the closest type strains (B. cosmicum 58S1T, B. betae PL7HG1T, B. ganzhouense CCBAU 51670 T, B. cytisi CTAW11T and B. rifense CTAW71T) resulted in values well below 95–96%. We further performed phenotypic tests which revealed that there are high levels of intraspecies variation, while an additional analysis of the nodA and nifD loci indicated that the symbiotic loci of the strains are closely related to those of Bradyrhizobium isolates with an Australian origin. Strain 14ABT (=LMG 31415 T = SARCC-753 T) is designated as the type strain of the novel species for which we propose the name Bradyrhizobium xenonodulans sp. nov. 相似文献
