A modified autoshaping paradigm (significantly different from those previously reported in the summation literature) was employed to allow for the simultaneous assessment of stimulus summation and subtraction in pigeons. The response requirements and the probability of food delivery were adjusted such that towards the end of training 12 of 48 trials ended in food delivery, the same proportion as under testing. Stimuli (outlines of squares of three sizes and colors: A, B, and C) were used that could be presented separately or in any combination of two or three stimuli. Twelve of the pigeons (summation groups) were trained with either A, B, and C or with AB, BC, and CA, and tested with ABC. The remaining 12 pigeons (subtraction groups) received training with ABC but were tested with A, B, and C or with AB, BC, and CA. These groups were further subdivided according to whether stimulus elements were presented either in a concentric or dispersed manner. Summation did not occur; subtraction occurred in the two concentric groups. For interpretation of the results, configural theory, the Rescorla-Wagner model, and the composite-stimulus control model were considered. The results suggest different mechanisms responsible for summation and subtraction. 相似文献

Rats were given exposure to a compound flavour (AX) and to one element of that compound (X). Two drinking tubes were made available to the rat on each exposure trial. For group concurrent (CNC) one tube contained AX and the other X. For groups alternating (ALT) and blocked (BLK), however, both tubes contained the same flavour (AX or X). Group ALT received AX and X on alternate trials; group BLK received AX in the first block of trials and X on the second, or vice versa. After an aversion had been established to X the groups were tested with AX. It was found that group ALT showed less generalization from X to AX than did group BLK. This difference was not accompanied by a parallel difference in the level of conditioning to X. However, group CNC showed both stronger conditioning to X and greater generalization from X to AX than groups ALT and BLK. Implications for the role of stimulus comparison in the perceptual learning effect are discussed. 相似文献

To study concept formation based on relations, adults were taught and tested on complex discriminations involving figures that varied in colors, forms, and orientations. In Experiment 1, participants learned to select figures with values A1 and B1 or values B1 and C1; thereafter, they consistently selected figures with values A1 and C1. Selections were based on the relations among the values, rather than on perceptual properties. Experiments 2 and 3 studied generalization with a matching-to-sample procedure: participants learned to select "yes" in the presence of the positive figures, such as A1B1, and "no" in the presence of the negative figures. Thereafter, all figures that resulted from combining three values of the three relevant dimensions were probed. Participants typically selected "yes" in the presence of the novel figures that had two or three values related to one another and selected "no" in the presence of the other figures. Finally, two participants learned a simple discrimination. They did not generalize responding to other figures with the same values; instead, their performance in the generalization test remained almost unaltered. Thus, the concept based on relations was not affected by the simple discrimination. These results showed some unique properties of the concept based on relations and challenge previous theories on concept formation. 相似文献

There is sparse literature on the profile of action potential firing rate (spike-frequency) adaptation of vertebrate spinal motoneurons, with most of the work undertaken on cells of the adult cat and young rat. Here, we provide such information on adult turtle motoneurons and spinal ventral-horn interneurons. We compared adaptation in response to intracellular injection of 30-s, constant-current stimuli into high-threshold versus low-threshold motoneurons and spontaneously firing versus non-spontaneously-firing interneurons. The latter were shown to possess some adaptive properties that differed from those of motoneurons, including a delayed initial adaptation and more predominant reversal of adaptation attributable to plateau potentials. Issues were raised concerning the interpretation of changes in the action potentials afterhyperpolarization shape parameters throughout spike-frequency adaptation. No important differences were demonstrated in the adaptation of the two motoneuron and two interneuron groups. Each of these groups, however, was modeled by its own unique combination of action potential shape parameters for the simulation of its 30-s duration of spike-frequency adaptation. Also, for a small sample of the very highest-threshold versus lowest-threshold motoneurons, the former group had significantly more adaptation than the latter. The receptor cells of the ampullary electroreceptor organs of Ictalurus nebulosus bear microvilli on the apical membrane. Whereas microvilli in mechanoreceptive hair cells and in chemoreceptor cells have a transduction function, the function of these membrane specializations in electroreceptor cells is not fully understood. To study the role of the microvilli of the electroreceptor cells, the ampullary electroreceptor organs were apically exposed to the microfilament-disrupting agents cytochalasin B and D. Electrophysiological measurements showed that cytochalasin caused a high decrease in sensitivity and a slight decrease in spontaneous activity. Exposure to cytochalasin B resulted in a striking disorganization of the microvilli on the apical membrane of the electroreceptor cells. The most plausible explanation for the results is that treatment with cytochalasin mainly affects the actin filaments of the microvilli causing an increase of the resistance of the apical membrane. A high apical resistance results in a decrease of the voltage over the basal membrane, which in turn reduces the sensitivity. The conclusion is that intact apical microvilli are necessary for proper functioning of ampullary electroreceptor organs. Alterations in microvillar properties, like surface area and ion channel conductancy might play a considerable role in the regulation of the sensitivity. 相似文献

Using an operant conditioning paradigm, we tested the ability of CD-1 mice to discriminate between members of a homologous
series of aliphatic aldehydes presented at four different concentrations. We found that the mice were clearly capable of discriminating
between all odorant pairs when stimuli were presented at concentrations of 1, 0.01, and 0.001 ppm (corresponding to four,
two, and one log unit above the highest individual detection threshold) with no significant difference in performance between
these concentrations. In contrast, the animals generally failed to discriminate above chance level when stimuli were presented
at 0.0001 ppm (corresponding to the highest individual detection threshold) although stimuli were clearly detectable. Further,
we found a significant negative correlation between discrimination performance and structural similarity of odorants in terms
of differences in carbon chain length. These findings suggest that an increase in stimulus concentration of only one log unit
above detection threshold appears to be sufficient for recruitment of additional subpopulations of odorant receptors to allow

Pigeons were exposed on fixed duration sessions to four chromatic stimuli and trained to perform a 2-item sequence. A detailed analysis of incorrect responses performed on each trial prior to completion of the sequence led to distinguish three learning stages. Already on initial sessions animals responded significantly more frequently to relevant stimuli than to irrelevant ones indicating stimulus control by salience. During an intermediary stage, responding to item 2 increased significantly and animals started an increasing number of trials with item 2, suggesting stimulus control by recency. On the final session the correct sequence outnumbered significantly the reverse sequence, suggesting control by order, while recency and salience effects were present to a lesser extent. Repeated pecks, i.e. consecutive pecks on the same cue, occurred on the four cues on the first session and decreased significantly on the last session for irrelevant colours. In addition, when key pecks were followed by a brief sound signal, repeats on relevant stimuli decreased while efficient colour pecks (i.e. when repeats were ignored) on these stimuli increased. These findings are discussed in the light of those obtained in traditional chaining paradigms. 相似文献

Several examples have been documented of novel behaviours which have apparently arisen spontaneously in primate groups and
then spread through the group by learning. Here we describe the first recorded instance of such an acquired behaviour in a
prosimian. The behaviour, consisting of immersing the tail in water and then drinking from the wet tail, was observed in a
group of semi free-ranging ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta). Seventeen of 28 animals showed the behaviour, including adult males. Several animals which did not show the behaviour were
observed watching and sometimes sharing the wet tail of animals who did. Several incomplete sequences, notably of non-stimulus
directed elements, were also seen in non-performers. It is likely that stimulus enhancement is the mechanism of spread of
this behaviour through the group, although the presence of the incomplete sequences suggests that imitation is also a possibility. 相似文献
