For long-lived iteroparous vertebrates that annually produce few young, life history theory predicts that reproductive output
(R) and juvenile survival should influence temporal variation in population growth rate (λ) more than adult survival does. We
examined this general prediction using 15 years of mark–recapture data from a population of California spotted owls (Strix occidentalis occidentalis). We found that survival of individuals ≥1 year old (ϕ) exhibited much less temporal variability
, where CV is coefficient of variation, than R
and that R was strongly influenced by environmental stochasticity. Although λ was most sensitive (
; log-transformed sensitivity) to ϕ
and much less sensitive to either R
or juvenile survival (survival rate of owls from fledging to 1 year old;

were equally good at explaining temporal variability in λ supports the conclusion that R and ϕ were equally responsible for variability in λ. Although currently accepted conservation measures for spotted owl populations

There is very little confirmed information on the social organisation of breeding Lesser Spotted Eagle populations, the turnover
rate of adults, and their nest-site and partner fidelity. According to established knowledge, however, breeding individuals
are territorial and defend at least the immediate vicinity of the nest site against their own species. It has further been
thought that females rearing young, as with the females of other raptor species, remain within a radius of only a few kilometres
of their eyrie. Using GPS satellite telemetry and DNA microsatellite analysis (DNA STR typing), we were able to disprove this
prevailing hypothesis. A satellite-tracked female flew over 50 km away from her eyrie (D) in at least two different directions
and visited at least one other occupied eyrie (T). It was also established that at least two strange females arrived at her
eyrie, which contained young, from as far away as 57 km, and probably remained there for some considerable time. The pool
of alleles represented at the different loci analysed, as well as the distribution of these alleles among the individuals,
excludes the possibility that these females could be sisters or even half-sisters. Visits of strange eagles at this eyrie
were also confirmed by direct observation. It can therefore be assumed that males only exhibit territorial behaviour towards
their own sex and not towards strange females and that females do not exhibit territorial behaviour towards other females;
but all these assumptions must be confirmed by further studies. For the first time it could be proved by means of microsatellite
analysis that almost all females studied used the same breeding site for 2 consecutive years. The longest established period

Calcitriol, the hormonally active form of Vitamin D, inhibits the growth and development of many cancers through multiple mechanisms. Our recent research supports the contributory role of several new and diverse pathways that add to the mechanisms already established as playing a role in the actions of calcitriol to inhibit the development and progression of prostate cancer (PCa). Calcitriol increases the expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), which plays a critical role in the inhibition of PCa cell growth by increasing the expression of the cell cycle inhibitor p21. Calcitriol inhibits the prostaglandin (PG) pathway by three actions: (i) the inhibition of the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the enzyme that synthesizes PGs, (ii) the induction of the expression of 15-prostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), the enzyme that inactivates PGs and (iii) decreasing the expression of EP and FP PG receptors that are essential for PG signaling. Since PGs have been shown to promote carcinogenesis and progression of multiple cancers, the inhibition of the PG pathway may add to the ability of calcitriol to prevent and inhibit PCa development and growth. The combination of calcitriol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) result in a synergistic inhibition of PCa cell growth and offers a potential therapeutic strategy. Mitogen activated protein kinase phosphatase 5 (MKP5) is a member of a family of phosphatases that are negative regulators of MAP kinases. Calcitriol induces MKP5 expression in prostate cells leading to the selective dephosphorylation and inactivation of the stress-activated kinase p38. Since p38 activation is pro-carcinogenic and is a mediator of inflammation, this calcitriol action, especially coupled with the inhibition of the PG pathway, contributes to the chemopreventive activity of calcitriol in PCa. Mullerian Inhibiting Substance (MIS) has been evaluated for its inhibitory effects in cancers of the reproductive tissues and is in development as an anti-cancer drug. Calcitriol induces MIS expression in prostate cells revealing yet another mechanism contributing to the anti-cancer activity of calcitriol in PCa. Thus, we conclude that calcitriol regulates myriad pathways that contribute to the potential chemopreventive and therapeutic utility of calcitriol in PCa. 相似文献

The spotted owl (Strix occidentalis) is a threatened species in many areas of its western North American range. Concomitant with its decline has been a rapid
invasion of its range and habitat by barred owls (Strix varia), a native species that was restricted, until relatively recently, to eastern North America. We assess the theoretical potential
for negative interactions between these two owls by examining size dimorphism and ecological relationships within various
owl assemblages throughout the world. We then review the anecdotal, natural history, modeling, and experimental evidence that
suggest barred owls may negatively affect spotted owls with at least a potential for the competitive exclusion of spotted
owls by barred owls throughout all or part of the former’2019;s range. While it is widely accepted that barred owls are either
causing or exacerbating declines of spotted owl populations, there are confounding factors, such as habitat loss and bad weather
that also may contribute to declines of spotted owls. Both theory and empirical information suggest that barred owls are likely
to have negative effects on spotted owl range and density, but the degree of the impact is not predictable. There is a conservation
conundrum here, in that the barred owl is a native species that has expanded its range westwards, either naturally or with
a degree of human facilitation, and now constitutes a major threat to the viability of another native species, the threatened
spotted owl. We propose that only through carefully designed experiments involving removal of barred owls will we be able
to determine if recent declines in spotted owl populations are caused by barred owls or by other factors. It is rare in conservation
science that replicate study areas exist for which we also have long-standing demographic information, as is the case with
the spotted owl. Removal experiments would take advantage of the wealth of data on spotted owls, and allow ecologists to assess
formally the impacts of an invasive species on a threatened species, as well as to suggest mitigation measures. 相似文献

The conservation of Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis) populations has been one of the most controversial and visible issues in United States conservation history. Coincident
with declines in Spotted Owl populations over the last three decades has been the invasion of Barred Owls (Strix varia) throughout the range of the Northern Spotted Owl (S. o. caurina) and into the range of the California Spotted Owl (S. o. occidentalis). This invasion has confused the reasons behind recent Spotted Owl declines because anecdotal and correlative information
strongly suggests that Barred Owls are a new factor influencing the declines. There is great uncertainty about all aspects
of the invasion, and this has sparked discussion about appropriate management and research responses regarding the effects
of this invasion on Spotted Owls. We present a set of possible responses to address the issue, and we discuss the relative
merits of these with regard to their efficacy given the current state of knowledge. We recommend that research specifically
aimed at learning more about the interspecific relationships of these two owls throughout the range of sympatry should begin
immediately. Approaches that seem unlikely to be useful in the short-term either because they do not facilitate knowledge
acquisition, are relatively costly, or would be technically less feasible, should not be considered viable at this time. We
believe the consequences of the invasion are potentially dire for the Spotted Owl and that research and management actions,
including the use of adaptive management, are required to inform the near- and long-term decision-making process for conservation

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been increasingly used in treating cancer for multitude of situations in various tissue types. To perform the therapy safely and reliably, the effect of critical parameters needs to be known beforehand. Temperature plays an important role in the outcome of the therapy and any uncertainties in temperature assessment can be lethal. This study presents the RFA case of fixed tip temperature where we’ve analysed the effect of electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and blood perfusion rate of the tumour and surrounding normal tissue on the radiofrequency ablation. Ablation volume was chosen as the characteristic to be optimised and temperature control was achieved via PID controller. The effect of all 6 parameters each having 3 levels was quantified with minimum number of experiments harnessing the fractional factorial characteristic of Taguchi’s orthogonal arrays. It was observed that as the blood perfusion increases the ablation volume decreases. Increasing electrical conductivity of the tumour results in increase of ablation volume whereas increase in normal tissue conductivity tends to decrease the ablation volume and vice versa. Likewise, increasing thermal conductivity of the tumour results in enhanced ablation volume whereas an increase in thermal conductivity of the surrounding normal tissue has a debilitating effect on the ablation volume and vice versa. With increase in the size of the tumour (i.e., 2–3 cm) the effect of each parameter is not linear. The parameter effect varies with change in size of the tumour that is manifested by the different gradient observed in ablation volume. Most important is the relative insensitivity of ablation volume to blood perfusion rate for smaller tumour size (2 cm) that is also in accordance with the previous results presented in literature. Background
Genetic markers and maps are instrumental in quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping in segregating populations. The resolution of QTL localization depends on the number of informative recombinations in the population and how well they are tagged by markers. Larger populations and denser marker maps are better for detecting and locating QTLs. Marker maps that are initially too sparse can be saturated or derived de novo from high-throughput omics data, (e.g. gene expression, protein or metabolite abundance). If these molecular phenotypes are affected by genetic variation due to a major QTL they will show a clear multimodal distribution. Using this information, phenotypes can be converted into genetic markers.Results
The Pheno2Geno tool uses mixture modeling to select phenotypes and transform them into genetic markers suitable for construction and/or saturation of a genetic map. Pheno2Geno excludes candidate genetic markers that show evidence for multiple possibly epistatically interacting QTL and/or interaction with the environment, in order to provide a set of robust markers for follow-up QTL mapping.We demonstrate the use of Pheno2Geno on gene expression data of 370,000 probes in 148 A. thaliana recombinant inbred lines. Pheno2Geno is able to saturate the existing genetic map, decreasing the average distance between markers from 7.1 cM to 0.89 cM, close to the theoretical limit of 0.68 cM (with 148 individuals we expect a recombination every 100/148=0.68 cM); this pinpointed almost all of the informative recombinations in the population.Conclusion
The Pheno2Geno package makes use of genome-wide molecular profiling and provides a tool for high-throughput de novo map construction and saturation of existing genetic maps. Processing of the showcase dataset takes less than 30 minutes on an average desktop PC. Pheno2Geno improves QTL mapping results at no additional laboratory cost and with minimum computational effort. Its results are formatted for direct use in R/qtl, the leading R package for QTL studies. Pheno2Geno is freely available on CRAN under “GNU GPL v3”. The identification of the motor unit (MU) innervation zone (IZ) using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals detected on the skin with a linear array or a matrix of electrodes has been recently proposed in the literature. However, an analysis of the reliability of this procedure and, therefore, of the suitability of the sEMG signals for this purpose has not been reported.The purpose of this work is to describe the intra and inter-rater reliability and the suitability of surface EMG in locating the innervation zone of the upper trapezius muscle.Two operators were trained on electrode matrix positioning and sEMG signal analysis. Ten healthy subjects, instructed to perform a series of isometric contractions of the upper trapezius muscle participated in the study. The two operators collected sEMG signals and then independently estimated the IZ location through visual analysis.Results showed an almost perfect agreement for intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. The constancy of IZ location could be affected by the factors reflecting the population of active MUs and their IZs, including: the contraction intensity, the acquisition period analyzed, the contraction repetition. In almost all cases the IZ location shift due to these factors did not exceed 4 mm. Results generalization to other muscles should be made with caution. 相似文献

Growth rate is dependent upon adequate provision of amino acids especially in newly-hatched fish which experience very high growth rate. The replacement of a fraction of protein content by partially hydrolyzed (pre-digested) proteins was carried out and the digestive capacities and performances of larval/juvenile spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) were measured. The goal of this study was to verify whether the scope for growth is principally dictated by the proteolytic capacity of the digestive system by examining the effect of protein hydrolysates (PH) and trypsin inhibitor dietary inclusion on protein digestion/assimilation capacities, growth and survival. Four experimental diets were examined: C (control) I (supplemented with 750 mg/kg soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI)) H (supplemented with 20% PH) and HI (supplemented with 20% PH and 750 mg/kg SBTI). Protein hydrolysate supplementation gave significantly higher body mass than control at day 15 post-hatching. Unexpectedly, at day 30 and 60, fish administered diet HI (containing trypsin inhibitor) were heavier than the other groups. Suggested mechanisms are presented and discussed. The main conclusions of this study are that wolffish larval stage lasts roughly 15 days and that juvenile growth is linked to proteolytic capacity, but also very likely to absorption capacity of peptides and amino acids. 相似文献
