A near-shore belt 50 km in length was surveyed parallel to the shoreline of Lake Constance, central Europe, with a single-beam echosounder five times between July 1993 and February 1994. The species and age composition of fish in the survey area was investigated by gillnet fishing and SCUBA-diving. In summer, the horizontal distribution of perch was patchy. Population density declined from east to west, and highest densities occurred in one shallow bay and close to ports and jetties at steeper shores. During daytime, perch stayed in the sublittoral zone between 3 and 15 m depth and between 2 and 6 m above the thermocline. Within this layer age classes were separated spatially: the relative number of young-of-the-year perch declined with depth whereas the relative number of adult perch (2+ and older) increased with depth. At dusk the fish migrated to the littoral zone, where they spent the night resting on the bottom. In winter, under almost homothermal conditions, perch of all ages were located between the 35 and 70 m depth contours, where they performed pronounced diel vertical migrations. They rested on, or close to, the bottom during daytime and ascended up to 20 m below the surface at night. During this season, horizontal distribution of perch was much more homogeneous than in summer.  相似文献

A species complex in Spirogyra consists of the series of filament morphotypes of various ploidal levels arising from an original morphotype within a clonal culture or in nature. A clonal culture of filaments identified as Spirogyra maxima (Hassall) Kützing produced several morphotypes, i.e. filament types of distinctly different widths and ploidal levels. Banding patterns and satellites were visible on chromosomes stained at mitotic prophase and metaphase. The original culture of S. maxima contained filaments averaging 127 μ wide. Vegetative cells of the original culture contained six large chromosomes (>4 μ long), identifiable as three distinct pairs based on banding patterns and presence of satellites: (1) one pair of short chromosomes (ca. 5.0 μ); (2) one pair of long chromosomes (ca. 8.0 μm); and (3) a second pair of long chromosomes (ca. 9.0 μm) including a nucleolar organizing region and satellite. A larger morphotype averaging 175 μm in width contained 12 chromosomes, with two pairs of short chromosomes and four pairs of long chromosomes (satellites were usually indistinct). Aneuploid chromosome numbers ranging from 5 to 13 were observed in a few cells. Binucleate and trinucleate cells were also observed. A twobanded chromosome fragment was observed in a few cells with 6 chromosomes and a few cells with 12 chromosomes. The variety of morphotypes derived in this study could be identified as four different species of Spirogyra by conventional taxonomic criteria. The banding patterns and satellites on chromosomes suggest that three pairs of homologous chromosomes are present in filaments of the original clonal culture and that these filaments are themselves autopolyploid (diploid) descendants of ancestral form with a base chromosome number of x = 3.  相似文献

The distribution and density of the Amazon's two contrasting endemic dolphins–boto, or Amazon river dolphin, Inia geoffrensis , and tucuxi, Sotalia fluviatilis –were examined on two adjoining large rivers in western Brazil. Using a 17-m river boat as a sightings platform, strip transects were used to cover areas within 150 m of the river margin and line transects were used in all other areas. Highest densities of both dolphins occurred near the margin, and lowest in the center of rivers. Seven different habitats were identified along river margins. The boto and the tucuxi differed in some elements of habitat choice, but they shared a preference for areas with diminished current and where two channels joined. Neither species favored the two most common edge types in this region of the Amazon-mud banks and flooded forest margins. Overall, the most preferred habitat type was the least common, and known as "meeting of the waters." In these areas a channel of sediment-rich white water meets one carrying acidic black water; the resultant mixing produces particularly productive, and obviously attractive, conditions for dolphins. These results demonstrate that Amazonian dolphins selectively occur in areas known to be favored for gill net deployment by local fishermen, and may explain why entanglement is apparently a common cause of mortality.  相似文献

Salaria fluviatilis in the Júcar river basin was found only in the Júcar River itself, the tributaries Cabriel and Escalona, and the irrigation channel Acequia Real. Abstract.  1. The influence of filamentous algae on oviposition habitat selection by the mosquito Anopheles pseudopunctipennis and the consequences of oviposition decisions on the diet, development, body size, and survival of offspring were examined.
2. A natural population of An. pseudopunctipennis in Chiapas, Mexico, oviposited almost exclusively in containers with filamentous algae. Algae represented 47% of the gut contents of mosquito larvae sampled from the natural population. Mosquito larvae fed on an exclusive diet of algae developed as quickly and achieved the same adult body size (wing length) as their conspecifics fed on a standard laboratory diet.
3. Multiple regression of survival of mosquito larvae on percentage surface area cover of algae (0–99%) and the density of predatory fish (zero to four fish per container) was best described by a second-order polynomial model. Increasing fish densities resulted in a reduction in mosquito survival in all algal treatments. The highest incidence of survival was observed at intermediate (66%) algal cover in all treatments.
4. The presence of fish significantly extended larval development times whereas algal cover had no significant effect. The presence of fish resulted in emergence of smaller adults due to reduced feeding opportunities and predator avoidance behaviour. Algal cover also affected mosquito wing length but differently at each fish density.
5. Oviposition habitat selection improves survival in the presence of predators and feeding opportunities for An. pseudopunctipennis larvae.  相似文献

In the distinctive gelatinous Perca fluviatilis egg mass, limited fungal growth by Aphanomyces and Saprolegnia spp. especially S. diclina , occurred within dead eggs but did not spread to adjacent live eggs. Perch eggs exposed to parasitic challenge by Saprolegnia parasitica , S. dieclina (type III) and S. ferax , under fluctuating temperature regimes replicating spring water temperatures, did not have significantly greater mortality than did unchallenged controls. The observations suggest that perch eggs have some anti-fungal properties which usually prevent the spread of fungus throughout the egg mass and that under normal spring temperatures there should be negligible ecological consequences of fungal infection in perch egg masses.  相似文献

Mortality of small (60–100 mm total length) perch Perca fluviatilis after marking with coded wire tags in relation to water temperature (6·9, 14·2, 17·8 and 22·6° C) was experimentally tested and exclusively occurred within the first day of the experiments. Moreover, mortality rates were generally low with a maximum of 4%. No increased mortality at higher water temperatures was observed.  相似文献

Dolphins of the genus Sotalia are found along the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts of Central and South America and in the Amazon River and most of its tributaries. At present, the taxonomy of these dolphins remains unresolved. Although five species were described in the late 1800s, only one species is recognized currently ( Sotalia fluviatilis ) with two ecotypes or subspecies, the coastal subspecies ( Sotalia fluviatilis guianensis ) and the riverine subspecies ( Sotalia fluviatilis fluviatilis ). Recent morphometric analyses, as well as mitochondrial DNA analysis, suggested recognition of each subspecies as separate species. Here we review the history of the classification of this genus and present new genetic evidence from ten nuclear and three mitochondrial genes supporting the elevation of each subspecies to the species level under the Genealogical/Lineage Concordance Species Concept and the criterion of irreversible divergence. We also review additional evidence for this taxonomic revision from previously published and unpublished genetic, morphological, and ecological studies. We propose the common name "costero" for the coastal species, Sotalia guianensis ( Van Bénéden 1864 ), and accept the previously proposed "tucuxi" dolphin, Sotalia fluviatilis (Gervais, 1853), for the riverine species.  相似文献

  1. Resource polymorphism is common across taxa and can result in alternate ecotypes with specific morphologies, feeding modes, and behaviors that increase performance in a specific habitat. This can result in high intraspecific variation in the expression of specific traits and the extent to which these traits are correlated within a single population. Although metabolic rate influences resource acquisition and the overall pace of life of individuals it is not clear how metabolic rate interacts with the larger suite of traits to ultimately determine individual fitness.
  2. We examined the relationship between metabolic rates and the major differences (habitat use, morphology, and resource use) between littoral and pelagic ecotypes of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) from a single lake in Central Sweden.
  3. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) was significantly higher in pelagic perch but did not correlate with resource use or morphology. Maximum metabolic rate (MMR) was not correlated with any of our explanatory variables or with SMR. Aerobic scope (AS) showed the same pattern as SMR, differing across habitats, but contrary to expectations, was lower in pelagic perch.
  4. This study helps to establish a framework for future experiments further exploring the drivers of intraspecific differences in metabolism. In addition, since metabolic rates scale with temperature and determine predator energy requirements, our observed differences in SMR across habitats will help determine ecotype‐specific vulnerabilities to climate change and differences in top‐down predation pressure across habitats.
