Adaptive radiations are major contributors to species diversity. Although the underlying mechanisms of adaptive radiations, specialization and trade‐offs, are relatively well understood, the tempo and repeatability of adaptive radiations remain elusive. Ecological specialization can occur through the expansion into novel niches or through partitioning of an existing niche. To test how the mode of resource specialization affects the tempo and repeatability of adaptive radiations, we selected replicate bacterial populations in environments that promoted the evolution of diversity either through niche expansion or through niche partitioning, and in a third low‐quality single‐resource environment, in which diversity was not expected to evolve. Colony size diversity evolved equally fast in environments that provided ecological opportunities regardless of the mode of resource specialization. In the low‐quality environments, diversity did not consistently evolve. We observed the largest fitness improvement in the low‐quality environment and the smallest the glucose‐limited environment. We did not observe a change in the rate of evolutionary change in either trait or environment, suggesting that the pool of beneficial mutations was not exhausted. Overall, the mode of resource specialization did not affect the tempo or repeatability of adaptive radiations. These results demonstrate the limitations of eco‐evolutionary feedbacks to affect evolutionary outcomes.  相似文献

Isoprenoids are the largest family of natural products, over 40 000 compounds have been described, which have been widely used in various fields. Currently, the isoprenoid products are mainly produced by natural extraction or chemical synthesis, however, limited yield and high cost is far behind the increasing need. Most bacteria synthesize the precursors of isoprenoids through the methylerythritol 4‐phosphate pathway, microbial synthesis of isoprenoids by fermentation becomes more attractive mainly in terms of environmental concern and renewable resources. In this review, the strategies of isoprenoid production in bacteria by synthetic biology are discussed. Introducing foreign genes associated with desired products made it possible to produce isoprenoids in bacteria. Furthermore, the yield of isoprenoids is increased by the strategies of overexpression of native or foreign genes, introducing heterologous mevalonate pathway, balancing of the precursors and inactivating the competing pathway, these methods were used separately or simultaneously.  相似文献

From the culture broth of the mold Trichoderma viride, strain 63 C-I, the polypeptide antibiotic suzukacillin (SZ) was isolated. A peptide mixture named SZ-A was obtained by crystallization from crude SZ. Individual peptides from SZ-A were isolated by semipreparative HPLC and sequences were determined by HPLC-ESI-MS. The data confirm a general sequence of SZ-A published previously and in addition establish the individual sequences of 15 acetylated eicosa peptides with C-terminal alcohols. The major peptide SZ-A4 (21% of all peptides) shows the sequence:Ac-Aib-Ala-Aib-Ala-Aib-Ala(6)-Gln-Aib-Lx(9)-Aib-Gly-Aib(12)-Aib-Pro-Vx(15)-Aib-Vx(17)-Gln-Gln-Fol. Amino acid exchanges of the peptaibol are located in position 6 (Ala/Aib), 9 (Vx/Lx), 12 (Aib/Lx), 17 (Aib/Vx) and possibly at position15 (Val/Iva) (uncommon abbreviations: Aib (alpha-aminoisobutyric acid); Iva (D-isovaline); Lx (L-leucine or L-isoleucine); Vx (L-valine or D-isovaline); Fol (L-phenylalaninol)).  相似文献

The population of Irrawaddy dolphins that occupies the Mekong River in southern Lao People's Democratic Republic and Cambodia is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Based on capture‐recapture of photo‐identified individuals, we estimated that the total population numbered 93 ±  SE 3.90 individuals (95% CI 86–101), as of April 2007. The combined photo‐identification and carcass recovery program undertaken from 2001 to 2007 established that the Irrawaddy dolphin population inhabiting the Mekong River has reached a critical point with regards to its continued survival, where immediate research and management actions are required to greatly reduce adult mortality, and establish the cause of newborn mortality. In addition, community consultation is required to initiate, and evaluate, urgently required conservation measures. An ongoing well‐designed combined program of abundance estimation (i.e., photo‐identification) and carcass recovery is required to monitor total population size and mortality rates, to inform and evaluate management initiatives. The conclusions of this paper are likely generic to river dolphin populations, particularly where photo‐identification is possible.  相似文献

A genetic survey of Barbus spp. populations in the Marches Region (Adriatic River basins), central Italy, was carried out using mitochondrial and nuclear markers (partial D‐loop, cyt b sequences and microsatellite loci) in order to ascertain their systematic position and to address their genetic structure which is key to conservation action planning. Analyses were conducted on sequences obtained from 91 individuals collected from eight sampling sites in five different rivers, from two specimens provided by the Ichthyological Centre of Rome and mitochondrial sequences of Barbus spp. retrieved from GenBank. Presumptive classification based on external morphological characters was not confirmed by genetic analysis, by means of which all specimens collected in the Marches Region were ascribed to Barbus plebejus. Genetic diversity values (h and π) of sampling groups were all different from 0 except the one sample collected from the upper reaches of the River Tenna, above a hydroelectric dam. Population connectivity and colonization patterns of the studied area were inferred from an analysis of molecular variance distribution and evolutionary relationships among haplotypes. The results point to different levels of isolation among sampling groups due to ecological and anthropogenic factors and the effect of an artificial barrier on genetic variability and conservation status of the population. Finally, this study confirms the uncertainty associated with systematic classification of Barbus spp. based on morphological characters due to the phenotypic plasticity of the species.  相似文献

The breast cancer tumor suppressor protein BRCA1 is involved in DNA repair and cell cycle control. Mutations at the two C‐terminal tandem (BRCT) repeats of BRCA1 detected in breast tumor patients were identified either to lower the stability of the BRCT domain and/or to disrupt the interaction of BRCT with phoshpopeptides. The aim of this study was to analyze five BRCT pathogenic mutations for their effect on structural integrity and protein stability. For this purpose, the five cancer‐associated BRCT mutants: V1696L, M1775K, M1783T, V1809F, and P1812A were cloned in suitable prokaryotic protein production vectors, and the recombinant proteins were purified in soluble and stable form for further biophysical studies. The biophysical analysis of the secondary structure and the thermodynamic stability of the wild‐type, wt, and the five mutants of the BRCT domain were performed by Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy (CD) and Differential Scanning Microcalorimetry (DSC), respectively. The binding capacity of the wt and mutant BRCT with (pBACH1/BRIP1) and pCtIP were measured by Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC). The experimental results demonstrated that the five mutations of the BRCT domain: (i) affected the thermal unfolding temperature as well as the unfolding enthalpy of the domain, to a varying degree depending upon the induced destabilization and (ii) altered and/or abolished their affinity to synthetic pBACH1/BRIP1 and pCtIP phosphopeptides by affecting the structural integrity of the BRCT active sites. The presented experimental results are one step towards the elucidation of the effect of various missense mutations on the structure and function of BRCA1‐BRCT. In a competitive sympatric association, coexisting species may try to reduce interspecific interactions as well as competition for similar resources by several ecological and behavioral practices. We studied resource utilization of three sympatric primate species namely, lion-tailed macaques (Macaca silenus), bonnet macaques (M. radiata) and Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) in a tropical rainforest of the central Western Ghats, south India. We studied resource use, tree-height use, foraging height, substrate use when consuming animal prey and interspecific interactions. The results revealed that across the year, there was very limited niche overlap in diet between each species-pair. Each primate species largely depended on different plant species or different plant parts and phenophases from shared plant species. Primate species used different heights for foraging, and the two macaque species searched different substrates when foraging on animal prey. We also recorded season-wise resource abundance for the resources shared by these three primate species. While there was low dietary overlap during the dry season (a period of relatively low resource abundance), there was high dietary overlap between the two macaque species during the wet season (a period of high resource abundance for the shared resources). We observed only a few interspecific interactions. None of these were agonistic, even during the period of high niche overlap. This suggests that the sympatric primate species in this region are characterized by little or no contest competition. Unlike in some other regions of the Western Ghats, the lack of interspecific feeding competition appears to allow these primates, especially the macaques, to remain sympatric year-round.  相似文献
