  1. Mobility in flying animals can be assessed by variations in morpho–ecological traits such as body, thorax and wing sizes, wing shape and the proportion between body mass and wing area. Habitat loss and fragmentation can promote phenotypic plasticity and microevolutionary divergencies in natural populations. In this context, sexual differences in physiology and behaviour can impose different selection pressure on morphological aspects related to flight.
  2. We evaluated the relative impact of forest patch area and habitat amount in shaping flight-related morpho–ecological traits of the tropical butterfly Hamadryas februa. We find a marked sexual dimorphism in the species, with females being larger, having larger thorax, higher wing loadings and larger wing total area than males. These trait values indicate females as the more dispersive sex. We show that habitat amount modulates body mass allocations in both sexes, leading to an increase in thorax mass with decreasing habitat amount. The effect of habitat amount was more pronounced in females, which increased total mass and wing loading while decreasing thorax allocation with decreasing habitat amount. This outcome suggests that females increase abdominal mass in response to a reduction in habitat amount. The focal forest patch increasing area was linked to increases in hindwing lengths in both females and males.
  3. We advocate that both landscape metrics (i.e., habitat amount and patch area) should be considered in studies evaluating landscapes' impacts on insect mobility. We discuss results in terms of the species' sexual differences in flight behaviour and the relative importance of both landscape metrics.

Water column metabolism is a major component in the functioning of wetland ecosystems and can be used as an indicator of ecosystem health. The effect of hydrologic pulsing on water column metabolism was studied with 2 year's field data and a validated model for two 1-ha created riparian wetlands in Columbus, OH, USA. Aquatic gross primary productivity (GPP) was measured during hydrologic pulses the first week of April, May and June of 2004 and compared to GPP during steady flow-conditions in April, May and June 2005. Pulses reduced diurnal variation of water temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen, and negatively affected GPP rates. Mean GPP measured during hydrologic flood pulses was 5.4 ± 2.6 kcal m−2 day−1, significantly lower than that measured for comparable months with steady-flow hydrology (10.8 ± 3.3 kcal m−2 day−1). Solar-normalized productivity values of 0.08 ± 0.01% of solar energy during pulses and 0.2 ± 0.02% for steady-flow conditions were also significantly different. Different hyperbolic curves of optimum productivity with water temperature were seen for pulsing and steady-flow conditions. A simulation model with hydrology, metabolism, and dissolved oxygen sub models was calibrated with 2005 steady-flow year data and validated with 2004 pulse year data. Results from both the field study and model simulations suggest that there was a threshold hydraulic inflow rate between 30 and 50 cm day−1 where aquatic metabolism became negatively affected by flow.  相似文献

Energy use associated with sales and distribution via business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce versus conventional retail is analyzed for the Japanese book sector. Results indicate that e-commerce uses considerably more energy per book than conventional retail in dense urban areas, because of additional packaging. In suburban and rural areas, the energy consumption of the two systems is nearly equal because the relative efficiency of courier services compared to personal automobile transport balances out the impact of additional packaging. The main reason e-commerce does not save energy, even in rural areas, is because of the multipurpose use of automobiles; e-commerce does consume less energy in the case of single-purpose shopping trips by automobile. Overall consumption at the national level is nearly the same: 5.6 mega-joules (MJ) per book for e-commerce and 5.2 MJ per book for traditional retail. Although this difference is smaller than the uncertainty in the result, the structure of energy use for the two systems is quite distinct, which suggests reprioritization of energy-efficiency strategies. Important factors influencing the energy efficiency of B2C e-commerce include packaging, loading factors of courier trucks, number of trips per delivery, and residential energy consumption.  相似文献

The evidence of light, electronic, and confocal microscopy collected within the 30-year period is reviewed to revise the concept of assimilate loading in phloem. It is the starting point located in mesophyll cells, which determines the route of assimilate export from mesophyll to phloem, rather than its final segment located in the terminal phloem. Plastids, photosynthesis, and the primary pool of photosynthates are localized in the vacuome of mesophyll cells. All chemicals applied to leaf surface are loaded to phloem via apoplast, even in the symplastic plants. It follows that photoassimilates are not loaded via apoplast because they cannot leave mesophyll and not due to the lack of pumps and transporters in the terminal phloem cells. Of two membranes separating vacuome and apoplast, the tonoplast confers the barrier function. The impossibility to overcome this barrier raises the hydrostatic pressure in the vacuome to the level that induces plasmodesma development between the cells. With the loss of tonoplast barrier function for assimilates, the latter leave for apoplast, this process is incompatible with building the vacuolar loading route. Two alternative mechanisms of phloem loading diverge initially because of different barrier functions of tonoplast. The radical change in these functions makes up the crucial advantage of the young group of apoplastic dicot plants (about 20 000 species), whose evolution is associated with expansion of meadow-steppe vegetation 5–7 million years ago. Such change would evolve due to the climate differentiation in the late myocene period, when heat and moisture were lacking at vast territories. A large group of temperate herbs evolved and expanded because of these changes in the assimilate compartmentalization.  相似文献

Nutrient regeneration and respiration rates of natural zooplankton from a tropical reservoir were experimentally measured. Excretion rates of ammonia (Ea), orthophosphate (Ep) and community respiration rates (R) were estimated considering the variations in the concentrations of ammonia, orthophosphate and dissolved oxygen between control and experimental units. The ranges obtained for these rates from the 2 h assays were Ea = 1.95–4.95 μg N-NH4 · mg · DW−1 · h−1; Ep = 0.12–0.76 μg P-PO4 mg DW−1 · h−1. Respiratory rates were quite constant (R = 0.01–0.02 mg O2 · mg DW−1 · h−1). The uptake of nutrients due to bacteria can affect the experimental determination of excretion rates of zooplankton. Orthophosphate release increased from 0.28 to 0.82 μg P-PO4 · mg DW−1 · h−1 when bacterial activity was depleted by antibiotic addition in experimental vessels (Exp IV). This demonstrates that free living bacteria are able to consume promptly most phosphorus excreted by zooplankton. Ammonia excretion rates were lower in experimental units containing antibiotics. Lower excretion rates were also obtained with longer exposure times and higher biomass levels in the experimental units. Finally, this study also showed that zooplankton excretion can affect significantly turn over rates of total phosphorus in Pampulha Reservoir. In some periods, specially during the dry season when zooplankton biomass was very high, phosphorus release by zooplankton, during one single day, can be as high as 40% of the total phosphorus content in lake water (Turn over time = 2.5 days).  相似文献

It is unknown whether the presence of sitting-induced pain or a clinical history of low back pain (LBP) changes spine function outcomes such as the flexion relaxation ratio (FRR). The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether sitting-induced pain or a history of non-specific LBP results in a different FRR. Forty-seven participants were instrumented with surface electromyography over erector spinae at L1, and accelerometers at L1 and S2. Standing maximum lumbar flexion trials were taken preceding and following a 1-hour sitting trial. Pain ratings during sitting and history of LBP were used to group participants for analysis. FRR values taken after the sitting exposures were compared between those that did and did not develop pain during sitting. Baseline FRR values were compared participants with and without a history of LBP. No significant differences in FRR were found for either pain groups (p = 0.11) or clinical history (p = 0.85). Lack of differences may be due to participants not currently experiencing a clinical episode of pain when the ratio was measured and/or because 1-hour sitting exposure was not long enough to induce pain modulation. The findings suggest that neither sitting-induced pain development or clinical history need to be controlled to prevent confounding of FRR.  相似文献

The rates of enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated rice straw and bagasse have been studied and compared with the hydrolysis rates of microcrystalline cellulose powder (MCCP) and Solka Floc. The effects of particle size reduction and enzyme loading on the rates of hydrolysis of rice straw and bagasse were also studied. It was found that the rates of hydrolysis of pretreated rice straw and bagasse are much higher than that of MCCP and Solka Floc. For both rice straw and bagasse, particle size reduction had very little effect in enhancing the rate of hydrolysis. Lignin present at <10% did not seem to hinder the accessibility of the enzyme to the cellulose surface. An enzyme loading > 40 Ug?1 had no effect on the hydrolysis rate of rice straw or bagasse.  相似文献

To survive and replicate in vertebrate hosts, protozoan and fungal invaders must be capable of securing host iron. Successful pathogens obtain the metal from either extraction of heme, binding of siderophilins, binding of siderophores, and/or iron pools within host cells. The actual strategy can vary with the availability of iron in the particular host milieu. As a corollary, hosts have developed an elaborate iron withholding defense system.
