Three field trials were conducted at Namulonge Agricultural and Animal Production Research Institute to investigate the population dynamics of Bemisia tabaci Gennadius and its associated aphelinid parasitoids in Uganda. Results showed that more whitefly occurred on the cassava mosaic disease-resistant variety, (Nase 4) compared to the susceptible variety, (Ebwanatereka). Two species of aphelinid parasitoids, Eretmocerus mundus Mercet and Encarsia sophia Girault and Dodd, were identified during the study. Overall percent parasitism did not differ significantly (P>0.05) between varieties in all the trials, but significant differences occurred at 13, 15 and 21 weeks after planting during late season (2000), 18 weeks after planting during early season (2001), and 8 weeks after planting during late season (2001). The trends in the build up in numbers of both parasitoids species and apparent parasitism were similar, differed significantly on certain dates. It was, however, noted that percent parasitism decreased with nymph number. The significance of this phenomenon on the potential use of these aphelinid parasitoids as biocontrol agents of the cassava whitefly is discussed.  相似文献

This study shows, for the first time, that the evolution of a simple behavior, scrounging, at the individual level can have effects on populations, food chains, and community structure. In particular, the addition of scrounging in consumer populations can allow multiple consumers to coexist while exploiting a single prey. Also, scrounging in the top predator of a tritrophic food chain can stabilize interactions between the top predator, its prey, and its prey's prey. This occurs because the payoffs to scrounging for food in a population are negative frequency dependent, allowing scroungers to invade a population and to coexist with producers at a frequency which is density‐dependent. The presence of scroungers, who do not search for resources but simply use those found by others (producers) reduces the total amount of resource acquired by the group. As scrounging increases with group size, this leads to less resource acquired per individual as the group grows. Ultimately, this limits the size of the group, its impact on its prey, and its ability to outcompete other species. These effects can promote stability and thus increase species diversity. I will further suggest that prey may alter their spatial distribution such that scrounging will be profitable among their predators thus reducing predation rate on the prey.  相似文献

调查西双版纳地区黄猄蚁OecophyllasmaragdinaFabricius对橡胶盔蚧Parasaissetianigra(Nietner)种群数量和寄生蜂的影响。结果表明:黄猄蚁对橡胶盔蚧种群消长及寄生蜂均有影响。"有蚂蚁"枝条上介壳虫种群数量显著高于"无蚂蚁"枝条。"有蚂蚁"枝条介壳虫死亡率和寄生蜂都显著低于"无蚂蚁"枝条。说明黄猄蚁的存在影响了橡胶树介壳虫的种群繁殖率和死亡率。建议在今后综合防治中,充分利用蚂蚁与橡胶树介壳虫关系。通过驱逐橡胶树上的蚂蚁来有效遏制介壳虫的发生。  相似文献

Various experimental and simulation studies have suggested that the presence of amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solutions substantially perturbs the tetrahedral hydrogen-bond (H-bond) network of neat liquid water. Such structural perturbation is expected to impact H-bond lifetime of liquid water. Tetramethylurea (TMU) is an example of an amphiphile because it possesses both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties. Molecular dynamics simulations of (water+TMU) binary mixtures at various compositions have been performed in order to investigate the microscopic mechanism through which the amphiphiles influence the H-bond dynamics of liquid water at room temperature. Present simulations indicate lengthening of both water–water H-bond lifetime and H-bond structural relaxation time upon addition of TMU in aqueous solution. At the highest TMU mole fraction studied, H-bond lifetime and structural relaxation time are, respectively, ~4 and ~8 times longer than those in neat water. This is comparable with the slowing down of H-bond dynamics for water molecules confined in cyclodextrin cavities. Simulated relaxation profiles are multi-exponential in character at all mixture compositions, and simulated radial distribution functions suggest enhanced water–water and water–TMU interactions upon addition of TMU. No evidence for complete encapsulation of TMU by water H-bond network has been found.  相似文献

Recent studies suggest that regeneration following large-scale disturbance in Kibale National Park, Uganda, is slow or possibly arrested. Here, data is provided on the growth and mortality of seedlings in the forest understory, treefall gaps, and in large gaps that suggest that this pattern of arrested succession can be attributed partially to the fact that this East African community lacks aggressive colonizing tree species. Growth and mortality rates were contrasted for seedlings of six tree species planted in the understory, small gaps, and large gaps for 36 months. Data suggest that species are adapted to gaps of particular sizes. For example, Uvariopsis congensis grew faster in the understory than in small gaps, whereas Warburgia ugandensis had the lowest mortality rate and highest growth rate in large gaps. Seedlings (n=170) of 15 species were transplanted to assess the response of the tree community to large gap conditions. The limited survival of seedlings in large gaps relative to the understory suggests that only a small proportion of the tree community in this forest regenerates best in gaps larger than those created by the collapse of a single tree. These findings differ from a number of studies conducted in other geographical regions, and suggests that tree communities differ with respect to the proportion of tree species adapted to gaps of particular sizes. This may relate to variation among regions in their history of disturbance and thus frequency of gap formation, size of gaps, and the duration of periods of release. Such variation could imply the existence of a corresponding pattern among tropical forests of differential vulnerability to human disturbance, which tends to create many large gaps.  相似文献

Larval digenetic trematodes commonly castrate their first intermediate hosts, and should therefore impose strong selection on the timing and mode of host reproduction. Here we examine spatial variation in infection by trematodes in the freshwater snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Snails were collected at 11 different sites at Lake Alexandrina on the South Island of New Zealand from transects that ran perpendicular to the shore and across several different habitat types (from 0 to 8 m deep). Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationships between the frequency of trematode infection and snail size, habitat type, and transect location. On average, the probability of infection increased 3.3 times with each 1 mm increase in shell length. Prevalence of infection by the most common species of trematode, Microphallus sp., was highest in the shallow-water habitats where its final hosts (waterflow) spend most of their time. Prevalence of infection by another parasite, Telogaster ophistorchis (final host: eels) increased with depth, but because Microphallus was much more common, total infection by all trematodes decreased with depth. The effects of transect location were minor for Telogaster, but there was significant variation in Microphallus prevalence among transects, especially in the shore-bank habitat. Taken together, these results suggest that the risk of infection is spatially variable, but generally higher in shallow-water habitats, which may explain the greater frequency of sexual individuals as well as earlier reproduction among individuals near shore.  相似文献

Conformational changes and protein dynamics play an important role in the catalytic efficiency of enzymes. Amide H/D exchange mass spectrometry (H/D exchange MS) is emerging as an efficient technique to study the local and global changes in protein structure and dynamics due to ligand binding, protein activation-inactivation by modification, and protein-protein interactions. By monitoring the selective exchange of hydrogen for deuterium along a peptide backbone, this sensitive technique probes protein motions and structural elements that may be relevant to allostery and function. In this report, several applications of H/D exchange MS are presented which demonstrate the unique capability of amide hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry for examining dynamic and structural changes associated with enzyme catalysis.  相似文献

Extinction debt refers to delayed species extinctions expected as a consequence of ecosystem perturbation. Quantifying such extinctions and investigating long‐term consequences of perturbations has proven challenging, because perturbations are not isolated and occur across various spatial and temporal scales, from local habitat losses to global warming. Additionally, the relative importance of eco‐evolutionary processes varies across scales, because levels of ecological organization, i.e. individuals, (meta)populations and (meta)communities, respond hierarchically to perturbations. To summarize our current knowledge of the scales and mechanisms influencing extinction debts, we reviewed recent empirical, theoretical and methodological studies addressing either the spatio–temporal scales of extinction debts or the eco‐evolutionary mechanisms delaying extinctions. Extinction debts were detected across a range of ecosystems and taxonomic groups, with estimates ranging from 9 to 90% of current species richness. The duration over which debts have been sustained varies from 5 to 570 yr, and projections of the total period required to settle a debt can extend to 1000 yr. Reported causes of delayed extinctions are 1) life‐history traits that prolong individual survival, and 2) population and metapopulation dynamics that maintain populations under deteriorated conditions. Other potential factors that may extend survival time such as microevolutionary dynamics, or delayed extinctions of interaction partners, have rarely been analyzed. Therefore, we propose a roadmap for future research with three key avenues: 1) the microevolutionary dynamics of extinction processes, 2) the disjunctive loss of interacting species and 3) the impact of multiple regimes of perturbation on the payment of debts. For their ability to integrate processes occurring at different levels of ecological organization, we highlight mechanistic simulation models as tools to address these knowledge gaps and to deepen our understanding of extinction dynamics.  相似文献
