Studies of natural hybridization have suggested that it may be a creative stimulus for adaptive evolution and speciation. An important step in this process is the establishment of fit recombinant genotypes that are buffered from subsequent recombination with unlike genotypes. We used molecular markers and a two-generation sampling strategy to infer the extent of recombination in a Louisiana iris hybrid zone consisting predominantly of Iris fulva-type floral phenotypes. Genotypic diversity was fairly high, indicating that sexual reproduction is frequent relative to clonal reproduction. However, we observed strong spatial genetic structure even after controlling for clonality, which implies a low level of pollen and seed dispersal. We therefore used cluster analysis to explore the hypothesis that the fulva-type hybrids are an admixture of groups between which there has been limited recombination. Our results indicate that several such groups are present in the population and are strongly localized spatially. This spatial pattern is not attributable strictly to a lack of mating opportunities between dissimilar genotypes for two reasons: (1) relatedness of flowering pairs was uncorrelated with the degree of overlap in flowering, and (2) paternity analysis shows that pollen movement among the outcross fraction occurred over large distances, with roughly half of all paternity attributed to pollen flow from outside the population. We also found evidence of strong inbreeding depression, indicated by contrasting estimates of the rate of self-fertilization and the average inbreeding coefficient of fulva-type hybrids. We conclude that groups of similar hybrid genotypes can be buffered from recombination at small spatial scales relative to pollen flow, and selection against certain recombinant genotypes may be as important as or more important than clonal reproduction and inbreeding.  相似文献

A first-order moment closure, the mean-field assumption that organisms encounter one another in proportion to their spatial average densities, lies at the heart of much theoretical ecology. This assumption ignores all spatial information and, at the very least, needs to be replaced by a second-order closure to gain understanding of ecological dynamics in spatially structured populations. We describe a number of conditions that a second-order closure should satisfy and use these conditions to evaluate some closures currently available in the literature. Two conditions are particularly helpful in discriminating among the alternatives: that the closure should be positive, and that the dynamics should be unaltered when identical individuals are given different labels. On this basis, a class of closures we refer to as 'power-2' turns out to provide a good compromise between positivity and dynamical invariance under relabelling.  相似文献

Nestedness of faunal assemblages is a multi-scale phenomenon, potentially influenced by a variety of factors. Prior small-scale studies have found freshwater fish species assemblages to be nested along stream courses as a result of either selective colonization or extinction. However, within-stream gradients in temperature and other factors are correlated with the distributions of many fish species and may also contribute to nestedness. At a regional level, strongly nested patterns would require a consistent set of structuring mechanisms across streams, and correlation among species tolerances of the environmental factors that influence distribution. Thus, nestedness should be negatively associated with the spatial extent of the region analyzed and positively associated with elevational gradients (a correlate of temperature and other environmental factors). We examined these relationships for the freshwater fishes of Virginia. Regions were defined within a spatial hierarchy and included whole river drainages, portions of drainages within physiographic provinces, and smaller subdrainages. In most cases, nestedness was significantly stronger in regions of smaller spatial extent and in regions characterized by greater topographic relief. Analysis of hydrologic variability and patterns of faunal turnover provided no evidence that inter-annual colonization/extinction dynamics contributed to elevational differences in nestedness. These results suggest that, at regional scales, nestedness is influenced by interactions between biotic and abiotic factors, and that the strongest nestedness is likely to occur where a small number of organizational processes predominate, i.e., over small spatial extents and regions exhibiting strong environmental gradients.The Virginia Cooperate Fish and Wildlife Research Unit is jointly sponsored by United States Geological Survey, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.  相似文献

In two experiments, human participants searched in dynamic three-dimensional virtual-environment rectangular enclosures. Unlike previous studies involving learning of features and geometry, we trained features and geometry separately before placing them in conflict. Specifically, participants learned to respond to rewarded features located along the principle axis of a rectangular search space and to respond to rewarded geometry of a rectangular search space in separate training phases followed by a single test trial. During the test trial, features and geometry were placed in conflict by situating rewarded bins during feature training in unrewarded geometric corners from geometry training and unrewarded bins during feature training in rewarded geometric corners from geometry training. Results of Experiment 1 indicated that although all participants learned features and geometry at an equivalent rate and to an equivalent level, performance during the test trial indicated no preferential responding to features or geometry. However, choice reaction time was significantly longer during the test trial compared to that of last feature and last geometry training trials. Experiment 2 attempted to dissociate information content of features and geometry from their acquired associative strength by rewarding only one geometric corner during geometry training. Results of Experiment 2 indicated that although features had presumably acquired greater associative strength relative to that of geometry by the end of training, performance during the test trial indicated no preferential responding to features or geometry. As in Experiment 1, choice reaction time was significantly longer during the test trial compared to that of last feature and last geometry training trials. Collectively, results seem to provide converging evidence against a view-based matching account of spatial learning, appear inconsistent with standard associative-based accounts of spatial learning, and suggest that information content of spatial cues may play an important role in spatial learning.  相似文献

Adult female rats with high levels of circulating estradiol are biased to use a place strategy to solve an ambiguous spatial navigation task and those with low levels are biased to use a response strategy. We examined the development of this hormonal modulation of strategy use by training juvenile female rats on an ambiguous navigation task and probing them for strategy use at postnatal day (PD) 16, 21, or 26, after administration of 17 β-estradiol or oil 48 and 24 h prior to testing. We found that rats could use either strategy successfully by PD21 but that estradiol did not bias rats to use a place strategy until PD26. In order to evaluate the stability of this effect over multiple navigation experiences, we retested oil-treated juveniles three times during adulthood. On the first adult navigation experience, rats were significantly more likely to use the same navigation strategy they used as juveniles, regardless of current estrous cycle phase. On the second and third adult tests, after rats had more experience with the task, previous navigation experience did not predict strategy use. Rats in proestrus were significantly more likely to use a place strategy while rats in estrus and diestrus did not appear to have a group bias to use either strategy. These results suggest that estradiol can modulate spatial navigation strategy use before puberty but that this effect interacts with previous navigation experience. This study sheds light on when and under what circumstances estradiol gains control over spatial navigation behavior in the female rat.  相似文献

The red alga Mazzaella laminarioides is an economically important species with an extended latitudinal distribution along the Chilean coast. Its populations form mid-intertidal stands, several meters wide, and therefore are differentially exposed to environmental variables that result in temporal and spatial variability in productivity. We evaluated the effect of latitude and intertidal height on productivity by in situ measurement of photosynthetic performance. Daily and seasonal variations of O2-evolution rate and maximal quantum yield (F v/F m) were determined in plants from the upper and lower intertidal zone at two localities 1500,km apart. Results suggest that plant responses were mainly affected by irradiation, temperature and desiccation. At local level, upper intertidal plants showed a reduced photosynthetic rate and quantum efficiency as compared to those displayed by plants from the lower intertidal, indicating their higher level of excitation energy acclimation. Stronger acclimation differences between upper and lower intertidal plants were observed in spring and summer. Differences in photosynthetic parameters between reproductive phases were recorded in autumn and winter, regardless of the position of the individuals in the intertidal zone. The effects of tidal elevation on seasonal patterns of photosynthesis were also influenced by latitude. Seasonal variation in photosynthetic efficiency was observed in plants from the northern population at both intertidal elevations, but only at the upper intertidal level in the southern population. This study shows that production variability in M. laminarioides results from differences in the intensity of environmental factors observed seasonally at local (intertidal) and latitudinal scales.  相似文献

There have been few studies that have examined the spatial variance of nutrient limitation over the scale of an entire set of headwater streams. We used nutrient diffusing substrata experiments (control, nitrogen addition, phosphorus addition, and nitrogen+phosphorus addition) to examine how nutrient limitation varied throughout the five creeks that comprise the McLeod River headwaters (Alberta, Canada). We assessed the variance of chlorophyll a accrual at spatial scales within reach, within creek, among creeks and across linear distance within the entire watershed to assess the consistency and scale of nutrient limitation. We analyzed the importance of the spatial scale using several methods. We assessed the coefficient of variation at different scales, the spatial covariance of nitrogen and phosphorus deficiency indices using a spline correlogram, and the variance through traditional analyses of variance methods. Chlorophyll a accrual responded significantly to nutrients in all creeks, though the response varied in magnitude and in the limiting nutrient among reaches and among creeks. Variance in chlorophyll a accrual was due primarily to the factor of creek (R 2=0.40) and secondarily to reach (R 2=0.07). The CV was 31.4% among creeks, 18.4% among reaches, and 17.9% within reaches. The N deficiency index showed a positive correlation at sites located <4 km apart and a negative correlation at sites greater than 6.5 km apart. The P deficiency index showed no discernible spatial correlation. Our results suggest that nutrient limitation varies on small scales and is often driven by local processes.  相似文献

Small insects regulate their body temperature solely through behavior. Thus, sensing environmental temperature and implementing an appropriate behavioral strategy can be critical for survival. The fly Drosophila melanogaster prefers 24°C, avoiding higher and lower temperatures when tested on a temperature gradient. Furthermore, temperatures above 24°C have negative reinforcing properties. In contrast, we found that flies have a preference in operant learning experiments for a low-temperature-associated position rather than the 24°C alternative in the heat-box. Two additional differences between high- and low-temperature reinforcement, i.e., temperatures above and below 24°C, were found. Temperatures equally above and below 24°C did not reinforce equally and only high temperatures supported increased memory performance with reversal conditioning. Finally, low- and high-temperature reinforced memories are similarly sensitive to two genetic mutations. Together these results indicate the qualitative meaning of temperatures below 24°C depends on the dynamics of the temperatures encountered and that the reinforcing effects of these temperatures depend on at least some common genetic components. Conceptualizing these results using the Wolf–Heisenberg model of operant conditioning, we propose the maximum difference in experienced temperatures determines the magnitude of the reinforcement input to a conditioning circuit.  相似文献

Lysosomes are late-endocytic organelles which primarily contribute to degradation and recycling of cellular material. From a previous proteomics study of purified rat liver lysosomal membranes we identified a protein from the Arf-family of small GTPases, Arl8b. Although proteins of the Arf-family have roles in a wide range of cellular functions, most notably roles in protein/vesicular trafficking, Arl8b represents the first from this protein family to be associated with a late-endocytic organelle. We demonstrate the co-localization of this protein with various lysosomal markers in different cell lines by confocal-immunofluorescence microscopy. We also show that GTP-restricted mutant Arl8b localizes to lysosomes and causes their redistribution to the periphery of the cell and into membrane projections. This indicates that Arl8b is involved in trafficking processes for lysosomes.  相似文献

Parenteral immunization of transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer disease (AD) with synthetic amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta) prevented or reduced Abeta deposits and attenuated their memory and learning deficits. A clinical trial of immunization with synthetic Abeta, however, was halted due to brain inflammation, presumably induced by a toxic Abeta, T-cell- and/or Fc-mediated immune response. Another issue relating to such immunizations is that some AD patients may not be able to raise an adequate immune response to Abeta vaccination due to immunological tolerance or age-associated decline. Because peripheral administration of antibodies against Abeta also induced clearance of amyloid plaques in the model mice, injection of humanized Abeta antibodies has been proposed as a possible therapy for AD. By screening a human single-chain antibody (scFv) library for Abeta immunoreactivity, we have isolated a scFv that specifically reacts with oligomeric Abeta as well as amyloid plaques in the brain. The scFv inhibited Abeta amyloid fibril formation and Abeta-mediated cytotoxicity in vitro. We have tested the efficacy of the human scFv in a mouse model of AD (Tg2576 mice). Relative to control mice, injections of the scFv into the brain of Tg2576 mice reduced Abeta deposits. Because scFvs lack the Fc portion of the immunoglobulin molecule, human scFvs against Abeta may be useful to treat AD patients without eliciting brain inflammation.  相似文献
