The integration of heifers into free stall dairy herds is a frequent management procedure, but little systematic research has been conducted on its effect on cow behavior. Previous studies mainly focused on aggressive interactions, but it is also of interest how integration affects the spatial distribution of both the cows in the herd and the integrated heifers. In the present study we integrated a single and a pair of heifers on each of six Swiss working farms in a balanced order. Using an automatic tracking system, we recorded the positions of all the cows and of the integrated heifers at 1 min intervals for six continuous 24 h periods. From these data we calculated the proportion of time the animals spent in the activity area, at the feed rack and in the lying cubicles, their average path length and the area of the barn that they used. We then compared the behavior of the integrated heifers with that of the cows in the introductory weeks. We also compared the behavior of the cows recorded in the control weeks directly preceding the integration and in the introductory weeks. For evaluation we used linear mixed-effects models. Singly integrated heifers spent a higher proportion of time in the activity area (0.29 vs. 0.14; P < 0.001) and a lower proportion of time in the lying area (0.40 vs. 0.53; interaction with day, P = 0.011) than the cows, whereas the heifers of the pairs mainly spent a lower proportion of time in the feeding area than the cows (0.23 vs. 0.32; interaction with day, P = 0.044). Average path length was longer for the integrated heifers soon after introduction but approached the values of the cows later on (interaction with day, P = 0.012). The total barn area used by a given animal was largest in the cows and was reduced in heifers integrated singly or in pairs (cows: 341/373 m2, pairs: 306 m2, single heifer: 333 m2; P = 0.055). Cows were little influenced in their space use by the integration of a single or pair of heifers. In summary, the behavior of the singly integrated heifers differed more markedly from that of the cows than the behavior of the heifers introduced in pairs during the introductory week. We would therefore recommend integrating pairs rather than single heifers into herds of dehorned dairy cows to ease their integration.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope

Methodology development should reflect demands from the intended users: what are the needs of the user group and what is feasible in terms of requirements involving data and work? Mapping these questions of relevance and feasibility is thus a way to facilitate a higher degree of relevance of the developed methodology. For the emerging area of social life cycle assessment (SLCA), several different potential user groups may be identified. This article addresses the issues of relevance and feasibility of SLCA from a company perspective through a series of interviews among potential company users.

Methods and materials

The empirical basis for the survey is a series of eight semi-structured interviews with larger Danish companies, all of which potentially have the capacity and will to use comprehensive social assessment methodologies. SLCA is not yet a well-defined methodology, but still it is possible to outline several potential applications of SLCA and the tasks a company must be able to perform in order to make use of these applications. The interviews focus on the companies’ interest in these potential applications and their ability and willingness to undertake the required work.

Results

Based on these interviews, three hypotheses are developed relating to these companies’ potential use of SLCA, viz.: (1) needs which may be supported by SLCA relate to three different applications, being comparative assertions, use stage assessments, and weighting of social impacts; (2) assessing the full life cycle of a product or service is rarely possible for the companies; and (3) companies see their social responsibility in the product chain as broader than dictated by the product perspective of SLCA. Trends for these three hypotheses developed on the basis of the opinions of the interviewees. Also, factors influencing the generalization of the results to cover other industries are analyzed.

Discussion

Full comparative assertions as known from environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) may be difficult in a company context due to several difficulties in assessing the full life cycle. Furthermore, the comparative assertion may potentially be hampered by differences in how companies typically allocate responsibility along the product chain and how it is done in SLCA, creating a boundary setting issue. These problems do, only in a limited degree, apply for both the use stage assessment and the tool for weighting social issues.

Conclusion

Despite these difficulties, it is concluded that all three applications of SLCA may be possible for the interviewed companies, but it seems the tendency is to demand assessment tools with very limited life cycle perspective, which to some extent deviate from the original thought behind the LCA tools as being holistic decision aid tools.

Perspectives

It is advocated that there is a need to focus more on questions regarding the relevance and feasibility of SLCA from several different perspectives to direct the future methodology development.  相似文献

Biological control has been attracting an increasing attention over the last two decades as an environmentally friendly alternative to the more traditional chemical-based control. In this paper, we address robustness of the biological control strategy with respect to fluctuations in the controlling species density. Specifically, we consider a pest being kept under control by its predator. The predator response is assumed to be of Holling type III, which makes the system’s kinetics “excitable.” The system is studied by means of mathematical modeling and extensive numerical simulations. We show that the system response to perturbations in the predator density can be completely different in spatial and non-spatial systems. In the nonspatial system, an overcritical perturbation of the population density results in a pest outbreak that will eventually decay with time, which can be regarded as a success of the biological control strategy. However, in the spatial system, a similar perturbation can drive the system into a self-sustained regime of spatiotemporal pattern formation with a high pest density, which is clearly a biological control failure. We then identify the parameter range where the biological control can still be successful and describe the corresponding regime of the system dynamics. Finally, we identify the main scenarios of the system response to the population density perturbations and reveal the corresponding structure of the parameter space of the system. A. Electromyograms of different muscles can be submitted to a wavelet-transform and arranged in a Multi-Muscle Pattern (MMP). The MMP represents the intensity of the EMG signals of a number of muscles simultaneously in time/frequency space. As previously shown, the MMPs can be represented by points in an Euclidian vector space that was called pattern space. The variability of the MMPs is represented by the distribution of the scattered points in pattern space. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of the points and use the properties of the distribution to classify MMPs. The first task was to test whether the points representing a group of MMPs were located between the inner and outer boundary of a sphere-like domain in whitened pattern space as theoretically predicted. The mean of these points and thus of the MMPs is represented by a point at the center of the sphere. The hypothesis was that the spheres representing points of the MMPs of barefoot and shod runners were sufficiently separated and distinguishable in pattern space to allow classification of the runners according to their shod condition. The results confirmed the hypothesis and revealed that the recognition rate was over 80%. One can conclude and generalize that the points representing MMPs recorded for a certain condition reside between the inner and outer boundary of the sphere. The classification based on the spherical feature represents a much better discrimination than one based on the distance from the mean.  相似文献

Based on a non-equilibrium mechanism for spatial pattern formation we study how position information can be controlled by locally coupled discrete dynamical networks, similar to gene regulation networks of cells in a developing multicellular organism. As an example we study the developmental problems of domain formation and proportion regulation in the presence of noise, as well as in the presence of cell flow. We find that networks that solve this task exhibit a hierarchical structure of information processing and are of similar complexity as developmental circuits of living cells. Proportion regulation is scalable with system size and leads to sharp, precisely localized boundaries of gene expression domains, even for large numbers of cells. A detailed analysis of noise-induced dynamics, using a mean-field approximation, shows that noise in gene expression states stabilizes (rather than disrupts) the spatial pattern in the presence of cell movements, both for stationary as well as growing systems. Finally, we discuss how this mechanism could be realized in the highly dynamic environment of growing tissues in multicellular organisms.  相似文献

以闽西永安市Ⅰ(挖笋+劈草+施肥+灌水)、Ⅱ(挖笋+劈草+施肥)、Ⅲ(挖笋+劈草)3种不同抚育措施的毛竹林为对象,对其碳密度、碳贮量及碳格局进行了研究。结果表明:毛竹各器官碳密度变动范围为0.3947~0.5619 g·g-1,碳密度高低排序为竹鞭>竹秆>竹枝>竹蔸>竹叶>竹根>鞭根;不同竹龄间竹秆、竹枝、竹叶、竹根碳密度存在极显著差异(P<0.01),而竹蔸碳密度差异不显著(P>0.1);随着竹龄增加,毛竹平均碳密度有下降趋势,1~6年毛竹平均碳密度为0.4579~0.4957 g·g-1。Ⅰ、Ⅱ和Ⅲ类毛竹林毛竹层碳贮量分别为76.74、64.30和55.91 t·hm-2;凋落物层碳贮量分别为2.59、3.01和4.88 t·hm-2;土壤层碳贮量分别为150.64、197.36和232.56 t·hm-2;总碳贮量分别为227.37、261.66和288.47 t·hm-2,其中土壤层碳贮量所占比例最高,分别为66.25%、75.43%和80.62%,毛竹层碳贮量比例分别为32.61%、23.43%和17.69%,凋落物层碳贮量比例分别为1.14%、1.15%和1.69%。毛竹生物器官中,竹秆固碳能力最强,占年总固碳量比例为56.47%~59.66%,鞭根的固碳能力最弱,占年总固碳量的比例仅为2.52%~2.83%;毛竹林年固碳量排序为Ⅰ类型>Ⅱ类型>Ⅲ类型。  相似文献

Questions: Can small and isolated high‐conservation value forests (e.g. designated woodland key habitats) maintain old‐growth forest characteristics and functionality in fragmented landscapes? To what extent have past disturbances (natural and anthropogenic) influenced the development of old‐growth characteristics of these forests? How long does it take for selectively cut stands to attain conditions resembling old‐growth forests? Location: Southern boreal zone of central Sweden. Methods: We linked multiple lines of evidence from historical records, biological archives, and analyses of current forest structure to reconstruct the forest history of a boreal landscape, with special emphasis on six remaining core localities of high‐conservation value forest stands. Results: Our reconstructions revealed that several of these stands experienced wildfires up to the 1890s; all had been selectively harvested in the late 1800s; and all underwent substantial structural and compositional reorganization over the following 100‐150 years. This time interval was sufficient to recover considerable amounts of standing and downed dead wood (mean 60.3 m3 ha?1), a range of tree ages and sizes (mean basal area 32.6 m2 ha?1), and dominance of shade‐tolerant spruce. It was insufficient to obtain clearly uneven tree age structures and large (>45 cm diameter) living and dead trees. Thus, these forests contain some, but not all, important compositional and structural attributes of old‐growth forests, their abundance being dependent on the timing and magnitude of past natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Our landscape‐level analysis showed marked compositional and structural differences between the historical forest landscape and the present landscape, with the latter having a greater proportion of young forests, introduction of non‐native species, and lack of large trees and dead wood. Conclusions: The remnant high‐conservation value stands were not true representatives of the pre‐industrial forests, but represent the last vestige of forests that have regenerated naturally and maintained a continuous tree cover. These traits, coupled with their capacity for old‐growth recovery, make them valuable focal areas for conservation.  相似文献

The brain uptake and brain to blood efflux transport of (14)C-GABA were studied in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats using 20 min bilateral in situ brain perfusion in rats anesthetized using urethane. The volume of distribution (Vd) of (14)C-GABA into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain regions (cortex, diencephalon, cerebellum, and brain stem) was significantly greater in SHR than in the corresponding regions in WKY rats (p<0.05). The estimated Vd value of (14)C-GABA in CSF of SHR was 3.4 fold greater than that in WKY. Also compared to WKY, the Vd of (14)C-GABA into cerebellum and cortex of SHR was 15.3 fold and 19.4 fold greater, respectively. Although the study of blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity using (3)H-mannitol revealed increased paracellular permeability at the brain capillaries of SHR when compared to WKY rats, this was found to be only partially responsible for the increased (14)C-GABA uptake. The study of brain to blood efflux transport of (14)C-GABA (after loading of brain with (14)C-GABA by vascular perfusion) revealed that the half-time of elimination was significantly shorter in SHR (5.35+/-0.66 min) than in WKY rats (14.83+/-1.94 min), (p<0.001). HPLC analysis revealed that GABA concentrations in brain extracts and CSF of SHR were similar to those in WKY rats (p>0.05). The faster efflux in SHR might be, at least partially, responsible to compensate for increased uptake of this neurotransmitter and to preserve the protective function of BBB towards GABA. The protective function of the BCSFB towards GABA appears to be also preserved, since systemic infusion of GABA within a wide range of administered doses (0.004-5.00 mg/kg) produced an increase in GABA CSF concentration from around 0.5 microM to only 11 microM, and the obtained pattern of CSF GABA concentrations under these conditions did not differ between SHR and WKY rats, as revealed by HPLC.  相似文献
