Uses and Conservation of Plant Species in a National Park—A Case Study of Ben En, Vietnam. This paper surveys the use of wild and cultivated plants by local people in Ben En National Park, Vietnam, and analyzes its
impact on the conservation status of some of the utilized species. A total of 208 species used for a range of nonmedicinal
purposes are listed. See Hoang et al. (2008a) for 230 medicinal plants used in the park. Most species are used for food. The use of plants contributes very significantly
to the livelihood of local people in the park, but the current use patterns are not sustainable and would lead to local extinction
of rare and endangered species if no additional conservation measures are introduced. Men collect nonmedicinal plants more
often than women. A total of 38 useful plant species are commercialized, and contribute 12% of the average income of individual
households. Bamboo shoots of Schizostachyum funghomii (Poaceae) are the most important for income generation. The monetary equivalent of noncommercialized useful plants probably
far exceeds the value of the traded plant products. Plant use is independent of the ethnicity of the different populations
living in the park. Larger households make use of a greater variety of useful plant species than small families. Abundant
species in the forest have a higher use index (UI) than less common species. Out of the 208 useful species, as many as 27
were found to be endangered locally, many more than the 11 or 8 endangered species included in national or global red lists.
Currently, useful plants, especially important timber trees, are more abundant in the less disturbed parts of the park, far
away from the villages, indicating the pressures of illegal logging and harvesting near villages on the ecosystems. 相似文献

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) and TGFβ-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) are considered as key intermediates in Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling. However, the role of TRAF6 and TAK1 in C-type lectin receptors (CLRs) in response to fungal infection has not been studied. In this study, we have utilized macrophages derived from TRAF6 knock-out mice and myeloid-specific TAK1-deficient mice and determined the role of TRAF6 and TAK1 in CLR-induced signal transduction events. We demonstrate that TRAF6 and TAK1 are required for NF-κB and JNK activation, and expression of proinflammatory cytokines in response to Candida albicans infection. Our results highlight TRAF6 and TAK1 as key components in the signaling cascade downstream of C-type lectin receptors and as critical mediators of the anti-fungal immune response. Therefore, our studies provide a mechanistic understanding of the host immune response to C. albicans, which has a significant impact for the development of anti-fungal therapeutics and in understanding risk-factors and determining susceptibility to C. albicans infection. 相似文献

Eukaryotic porins are a group of membrane proteins whose best known role is to form an aqueous pore channel in the mitochondrial outer membrane. As opposed to the bacterial porins (a large family of protein whose 3D structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction), the structure of eukaryotic porins (also termed VDACs, voltage-dependent anion-selective channels) is still a matter of debate. We analysed the secondary structure of VDAC from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the fungus Neurospora crassa and the mouse with different types of neural network-based predictors. The predictors were able to discriminate membrane β-strands, globular -helices and membrane -helices and localised, in all three VDAC sequences, 16 β-strands along the chain. For all three sequences the N-terminal region showed a high propensity to form a globular -helix. The 16 β-strand VDAC motif was thus aligned to a bacterial porin-derived template containing a similar 16 β-strand motif. The alignment of the VDAC sequence with the bacterial porin sequence was used to compute a set of 3D coordinates, which constitutes the first 3D prediction of a eukaryotic porin. All the predicted structures assume a β-barrel structure composed of 16 β-strands with the N-terminus outside the membrane. Loops are shorter in this side of the membrane than in the other, where two long loops are protruding. The shape of the pore varies between almost circular for Neurospora and mouse and slightly oval for yeast. Average values between 3 and 2.5 nm at the C-carbon backbone are found for the diameter of the channels. In this model VDAC shows large portions of the structure exposed on both sides of the membrane. The architecture we determine allows speculation about the mechanism of possible interactions between VDAC and other proteins on both sides of the mitochondrial outer membrane. Exogenous wild-type p53 (wt-p53) tumor suppression increases the sensitivity of tumor cells to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. An iodized oil emulsion was used as a p53 vector for intra-arterial gene delivery to treat hepatic tumors. Whether the chemotherapeutic agent or the iodized oil affects exogenous wt-p53 activity remains poorly understood. In the present study, the early therapeutic response of rAd/p53, combined with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or with iodized oil, was observed in a human colon cancer model. Allograft models in 82 nude mice with human colon carcinoma SW480 were divided randomly into four groups and administered with physiologic saline, rAd/p53, rAd/p53+5-FU, and rAd/p53+iodized oil by intratumoral injection. At 24, 48, 72, 120, and 168 h after treatment, p53 expression, the Ki-67 index (KI), and the degree of tumor necrosis were assessed. The p53 expression and tumor necrosis in the therapeutic groups were higher than those in the control group. p53 expression reached its peak at 120 h in the rAd/p53 group, at 72 h in the rAd/p53+5-FU group, and at 48 h in the rAd/p53+iodized oil group. The p53 expression in the rAd/P53+5-FU group and the iodized oil group was significantly higher than those in the rAd/P53 group at 24 and 48 h. The results revealed that tumor necrosis is positively correlated with p53 expression. The KI of the rAd/p53+5-FU group increased significantly at 24 h. 5-FU and iodized oil increase the anticancer effect of rAd/p53, and 5-FU combined with rAd/p53 has a synergistic anticancer effect. 相似文献

The tissues of multicellular organisms are made of differentiated cells arranged in organized patterns. This organization emerges during development from the coupling of dynamic intra- and intercellular regulatory networks. This work applies the methods of information theory to understand how regulatory network structure both within and between cells relates to the complexity of spatial patterns that emerge as a consequence of network operation. A computational study was performed in which undifferentiated cells were arranged in a two dimensional lattice, with gene expression in each cell regulated by identical intracellular randomly generated Boolean networks. Cell–cell contact signalling between embryonic cells is modeled as coupling among intracellular networks so that gene expression in one cell can influence the expression of genes in adjacent cells. In this system, the initially identical cells differentiate and form patterns of different cell types. The complexity of network structure, temporal dynamics and spatial organization is quantified through the Kolmogorov-based measures of normalized compression distance and set complexity. Results over sets of random networks that operate in the ordered, critical and chaotic domains demonstrate that: (1) ordered and critical networks tend to create the most information-rich patterns; (2) signalling configurations in which cell-to-cell communication is non-directional mostly produce simple patterns irrespective of the internal network domain; and (3) directional signalling configurations, similar to those that function in planar cell polarity, produce the most complex patterns, but only when the intracellular networks function in non-chaotic domains. 相似文献

This paper is concerned with the possibility of Turing bifurcations in a reaction-diffusion system in which the diffusion coefficient of one species varies periodically in time. This problem was introduced and investigated numerically by Timm and Okubo (J. Math. Biol. 30, 307, 1992) in the context of predator-prey interactions in plankton populations. Here, I consider the simple case in which the temporal variation in diffusivity has a square-tooth form, alternating between two constant values, with a period that is long compared with the time scale of the kinetics. The analysis is valid for any set of reaction kinetics. I derive explicit expressions for the Floquet multipliers that determine the stability of the steady state, and thereby obtain the conditions for diffusion driven instability to occur. These conditions imply that, depending on the kinetics, the homogeneous equilibrium may be either more or less stable than when the diffusion coefficient is a constant equal to the mean of the variable diffusivity. I go on to consider the form of the solution when diffusion driven instability does occur, and I use perturbation theory to determine the effect of a small temporal variation in the diffusion coefficient on the spatial wavelength of the pattern that results from diffusion driven instability. 相似文献

Pseudallescheria boydii (Scedosporium apiospermum) is a saprophytic fungus widespread in the environment, and has recently emerged as an agent of localized as well as disseminated infections, particularly mycetoma, in immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. We have previously shown that highly purified α-glucan from P. boydii activates macrophages through Toll-like receptor TLR2, however, the mechanism of P. boydii recognition by macrophage is largely unknown. In this work, we investigated the role of innate immune receptors in the recognition of P. boydii. Macrophages responded to P. boydii conidia and hyphae with secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. The activation of macrophages by P. boydii conidia required functional MyD88, TLR4, and CD14, whereas stimulation by hyphae was independent of TLR4 and TLR2 signaling. Removal of peptidorhamnomannans from P. boydii conidia abolished induction of cytokines by macrophages. A fraction highly enriched in rhamnomannans was obtained and characterized by NMR, high performance TLC, and GC-MS. Preparation of rhamnomannans derived from P. boydii triggered cytokine release by macrophages, as well as MAPKs phosphorylation and IκBα degradation. Cytokine release induced by P. boydii-derived rhamnomannans was dependent on TLR4 recognition and required the presence of non-reducing end units of rhamnose of the rhamnomannan, but not O-linked oligosaccharides from the peptidorhamnomannan. These results imply that TLR4 recognizes P. boydii conidia and this recognition is at least in part due to rhamnomannans expressed on the surface of P. boydii. 相似文献

Some diversity and niche amplitude parameters were applied to rangeland pastures of the Central Iberian Peninsula and to their succession stages after the periodical ploughing typical of the traditional management of these areas. Four different slopes within a large area of undulating terrain were selected for the monitoring of succession as they contained the characteristical geomorphological pattern of the area (denudation, transport and accumulation sectors).If we consider the total entropy theorem, H (E.P.)=H(E)+H(P/E), the total entropy of the slope H(E.P) and the entropy of species H(E) increase as succession progresses. As the value of the entropy of the sampling plots conditioned by the species H(P/E) is affected by the number of plots utilized, we employed the expression A=H(P/E)/log2 number of plots, similar to Pielou's index for niche amplitude, W=H(P/E)/H(P).This values decreases with succession, indicating that plant species tend to occupy more definite sectors along the slope. The number of low entropy species H(P/E)
i or specialist species, confined to narrow sectors also increases. When computed separately within the different sectors niche amplitude results in small values for the low slope regions (accumulation sector). This effect becomes more pronounced when succession advances.
