Southern California bays and harbors have been shown to contain high concentrations of a variety of contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, and pesticides. Conventional monitoring tools do not assess exposure to PAHs in fish, or sublethal effects, which can be more sensitive indicators of stress than traditional methods. This study was conducted to evaluate DNA damage (a sublethal effect) and PAH exposure in flatfish from southern California bays and harbors, and the Channel Islands. California halibut (Paralichthys californicus) were collected from eight bays and harbors (Ventura Harbor, Channel Islands Harbor, Marina del Rey, King Harbor, Alamitos Bay, Long Beach Harbor, Newport Bay, San Diego Bay), and a reference site off Camp Pendleton. Pacific sanddab (Citharichthys sordidus) were collected near four of the Channel Islands (San Miguel Island, Santa Cruz Island, Anacapa Island, Santa Barbara Island). Metabolites of high molecular weight PAHs in fish bile were characterized using a semi-quantitative technique that measures fluorescent aromatic compounds (FACs) in fish bile. DNA damage in fish blood cells was assessed by measuring the amount of single-strand breaks in stained DNA using the Comet assay. The concentration of FACs in fish from all bays and harbors was elevated, with average concentrations ranging from three to ten times greater than FACs in reference fish. FAC levels were elevated in Pacific sanddabs from a Channel Islands station located between Santa Cruz Island and Anacapa Island. DNA damage varied by a factor of five among California halibut from bays and harbors, with significant damage occurring in fish from Alamitos Bay. There was a significant association between FAC concentrations and DNA damage in California halibut at Marina del Rey and Ventura Harbor, but not at other locations, presumably due to contaminants other than PAHs.  相似文献

Three-dimensionally preserved specimens of an indeterminate species of Sphenothallus Hall occur in limestones in the uppermost Guojiaba and lower Xiannudong formations (Qiongzhusian and early Canglangpuan stages, Lower Cambrian) in southern Shaanxi Province, China. The specimens consist of a small (up to 3 mm long), gradually tapered, subcircular to elliptic (transversely) tube that is broken at both ends, commonly with the fracture edge at the wide (apertural) end of each face forming a V- or U-shaped notch. Some specimens preserve the subconical upper (proximal) part of the holdfast, and all specimens are black. Combined scanning and transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive elemental analyses show that the tube wall is finely laminated, with individual laminae measuring about 1 μm thick, and consists mainly of calcium phosphate but also contains organic material. Sphenothallus specimens from the Lower Cambrian Guojiaba and Xiannudong formations represent the earliest known record of this genus, and indicate that the origin of this taxon is coeval with and possibly related to the Early Cambrian bioradiation event.  相似文献

A new ornithischian skull from the Elliot Formation of southern Africa is described. The specimen is compared in detail with the fabrosaurid Lesothosaurus diagnosticus. It actually shares many characters with specimens of the syntypes of this species or specimens referred to it. It is nevertheless not identical to any of these specimens and it is, moreover, remarkably larger than them. The possibility of attributing this specimen to a so far undescribed ‘large fabrosaur’ from the same formation is discussed. It is concluded that the specimen in question in this paper, while being ascribable to the genus Lesothosaurus, cannot be determined to a specific level until the existence of two fabrosaurid species in the ‘Stormberg Group’ is demonstrated and their range of morphological and size variation is properly appraised.  相似文献

Cenozoic palaeoceanography of the SE Atlantic and Southern Oceans has been investigated using Late Eocene/Early Oligocene to Quaternary ostracod assemblages from 49 samples of ODP Sites 1087 and 1088. Although the overall abundance of ostracods is relatively low (means of 17 and 49 specimens per sample at Sites 1087 and 1088, respectively) and there is an apparently high level of endemism (ranging from 50% to 80% at Sites 1087 and 1088), three major changes in the faunal assemblages are identified at Site 1087 (denoted A, B and C) and two at Site 1088 (denoted B' and C'). The assemblage boundaries, detected on the basis of stepwise changes in the abundance, diversity, dominance, endemism, faunal turnover and relative abundance of common taxa, coincide broadly with previously identified, ostracod-based palaeoceanographical 'events' discussed by Benson and co-workers over the last two decades. The data do not extend sufficiently far back to record the initiation of Assemblage A, but the faunal change between Assemblages A and B, marked by a decline in abundance, species diversity and faunal turnover, occurs within the Middle Miocene (NN5-6). It coincides with a previously documented palaeoceanographical 'event' at 16-14 Ma which, we suggest, may be related to the initiation of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) production and/or an expansion of the East Antarctic ice sheet. Assemblage B' is subdivided into the two Sub-assemblages B'1 and B'2 mainly on the basis of an increase in diversity, a peak in faunal turnover and a drop in the relative abundance of the genus Krithe in early Late Miocene time (NN9, c. 10.5 Ma). The B'1/B'2 Sub-assemblage boundary cannot be related to any previously documented faunal change in deep-sea ostracods. Changes associated with the boundaries between Assemblages B and C, and B' and C', which we believe to be synchronous, both include a decrease in diversity and abundance. In addition, two strong turnover peaks occur near the B'/C' boundary at Site 1088. The B/C and B'/C' boundaries coincide with a previously documented midPliocene 'event' (3.5 Ma) (NN15-16) which may be linked to putative closure of the Straits of Panama and increased production of NADW, the latter in turn leading to increased production of Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). Alternatively, fiuctuations in size of the Antarctic ice sheet during possible Pliocene warm periods could indirectly be responsible for the observed midPliocene faunal changes.  相似文献

Dark Dune Spots (DDSs) are transitional geomorphologic formations in the frost-covered polar regions of Mars. Our analysis of the transformations and arrangements of subsequent stages of DDSs into time sequence revealed their: (i) hole-like characteristics,(ii) development and formation from the bottom of the frosted layer till the disapperance of the latter, (iii) repeated (seasonal and annual) appearance in a pattern of multiple DDSs on the surface, and (iv) probable origin. We focused our studies on a model in which DDSs were interpreted as objects triggered by biological activity involvedin the frosting and melting processes. We discuss two competing interpretations of DDSs: development by defrosting alone, and by defrosting and melting enhanced by the activity of Martian Surface Organisms (MSOs). MSOs are hypothetical Martian photosynthetic surface organisms thought to absorb sunlight. As a result they warm up by late winter and melt the ice around them, whereby their growth and reproduction become possible. The ice cover above the liquid water lens harbouring the MSOs provides excellent heat and UV insulation, preventsfast evaporation, and sustains basic living conditions until the ice cover exists. When the frost cover disappears MSOs go to a dormant, desiccated state. We propose further studies to be carried out by orbiters and landers travelling to Mars and by analysis of partial analogues on earth.  相似文献

Recent stratigraphic studies in southern Tibet provide new information about the timing of the initial collision between the India and Eurasia continental blocks. The stratigraphic and paleontological evidence document dramatic changes in sedimentary facies and microfauna content across the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary. In the Zhongba and Gamba areas in southern Tibet, the K/Pg boundary is marked by a major disconformity, separating platform carbonates from overlying terrigenous conglomerates and sandstones. The stratigraphy of the boundary sequences has recently been improved with the recognition of three foraminiferal assemblages. They are: Maastrichtian Orbitoides-Omphalocyclus , Danian Rotalia-Smoutina-Lockhartia and Thanetian Miscellanea-Daviesina microfaunal assemblages. The K/Pg boundary at the Gamba area is placed between the Orbitoides-Omphalocyclus and Rotalia-Smoutina-Lockhartia faunas. In Tingri, Cretaceous Globotruncana and tertiary Globigerina-Globorotalia microfauna demark the position of the K/Pg boundary. The occurrence of terrigenous sandstones and boulder-size conglomerates in the early Paleocene is compelling evidence for tectonic uplift and emergence of the southern margin of the Lhasa block and of the northern margin of the Indian plate. Therefore, supported by biostratigraphic evidence, we argue that the uplift is caused by the onset of continental collision during the earliest Danian. Progressing plate collision resulted in deformation and fragmentation of the Paleocene carbonate platform and deposition of limestone breccias, which we consider as further evidence for tectonic compression as a result of early continental collision during the Thanetian, earlier than indicated by previous studies in the Himalayas. It is the change in the sedimentary facies and depositional environment that provides the earliest evidence and dating of the initiation of the collision process. From studies of sedimentary strata in southern Tibet, the collision of the India and Lhasa continental blocks was initiated at ~K/Pg boundary time (~65Ma). If that is the case, than the major lithofacies changes at the K/Pg boundary observed in the western Tethys, mostly referred to as intrinsic to the eustatic sea level change, has been driven by continental convergence and collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.  相似文献
