Abstract Folk conceptualizations of racism can be defined as ordinary people's understandings of the sources and persistence of racism. They function as equalization strategies – by denying the legitimacy of racism – and guide beliefs regarding antiracism strategies. I explore folk explanations of racism among black professionals in Brazil and South Africa by drawing on sixty interviews with members of these groups. In Brazil, racism is understood as an historical lingering, a product of ignorance, which will disappear with time and education. In South Africa, racism is viewed as more resilient, as a part of human nature and as a consequence of the competition for resources. These explanations of racism are closely related to the antiracism narratives that are salient in these two contexts: while Brazilian respondents affirm their belief in racial mixture and moral education, South African respondents are more uncertain about the possibilities of weaker racial boundaries in their country, relying on institutional constraints as their main antiracism strategy. 相似文献

Estimates of annual survival are essential for addressing topics in evolutionary and conservation ecology. However, most demographic studies of land birds are based on north temperate species, and few robust estimates of survival based on mark–recapture statistics are available for continental South American birds. We used time‐since‐marking models to estimate apparent survival of adult birds from 7 yr of mist netting data in the Colonche Hills. This site is one of few remaining large tracts of premontane forest in southwestern Ecuador, and an area of high priority for avian conservation. Species with sufficient data for analysis included three hummingbirds (Adelomyia melanogenys, Heliodoxa jacula, Phaethornis baroni), a cotinga (Schiffornis turdinus), and a wren (Henicorhina leucophrys). Our parameter estimates had reduced precision because the number of recaptures was small. Probability of recapture was low in three species , and moderate in two others . Adelomyia and Phaethornis had moderate apparent survival (; probability that a bird neither died nor emigrated from our survey area in a given year). Adults of Adelomyia moved seasonally, and it is possible that permanent emigration from our survey area contributed to low estimates of apparent survival. The other three species had relatively high estimates of adult apparent survival ranging from in Heliodoxa and Schiffornis to a high of in Henicorhina. 相似文献

Nucleic acid sequencing is frequently used to determine the molecular basis of diseases. Therefore, proper storage of biological specimens is essential to inhibit nucleic acid degradation. RNA isolated from the human pancreas is generally of poor quality because of its high concentration of endogenous RNase. In this study, we optimized the method for extracting high quality RNA from paired tumor and normal pancreatic tissues obtained from eight pancreatic cancer patients post-surgery. RNA integrity number (RIN) was checked to evaluate the integrity of RNA, we tried to extract the RNA with an RIN value of 8 or higher that allows for the latest genetic analysis. The effect of several parameters, including the method used for tissue lysis, RNAlater treatment, tissue weight at storage, and the time to storage after surgical resection, on the quantity and quality of RNA extracted was examined. Data showed that the highest quantity of RNA was isolated using a combination of manual and mechanical methods of tissue lysis. Additionally, sectioning the tissues into small pieces (<100 mg) and treating them with RNAlater solution prior to storage increased RNA stability. Following these guidelines, high quality RNA was obtained from 100% (8/8) of tumor tissues and 75% (6/8) of normal tissues. High-quality RNA was still stable under repeated freezing and thawing. The application of these results during sample handling and storage in clinical settings will facilitate the genetic diagnosis of diseases and their subsequent treatment. 相似文献

At the end of Member 2 times, remnant mammillary-form stalactites in the roof and wall contacts show that an irregular wedge-shaped
space existed from the Classic Section out to the Cone area. It was into this space that hyenas and other denning animals
were able to gain access from an as yet unfilled Cone area. During the mining operations of the 1920’s, Eitzman (1958) recollects
entering an impressive bone breccia resembling a charnel house. We suggest that it is most probable that the Grey Breccia
corresponds to his main breccia as only the area on top of Member 2, between the dolomite walls, roof and stalagmite boss
has the required volume. It also lies at the end of an incline first dug by the miners, (still in existence), and at the end
of which he was able to note some of the deposits. The bone breccias at the same level at the back of the Cone suggest that
other dens were created at about this time.
As the roof continued to retreat upslope and more material was washed in or fell in from the surface so more sediment was
winnowed into the back of the Cone. At some stage this allowed prey animals to enter the Cone area and gain access between
the speleothem barrier to the area of the Classic Section. As most Australopithecine fragments came from this breccia, it
seems likely that, as with Swartkrans, the hominid fragments are the result of predation. Then as sediments continued to wash
into the Cone area, the Classic Section and the back of the Cone became inaccessible for denning purposes.
Large speleothem remnants embedded in sediment starting part-way up the Cone shows that a roof continued to exist in this
area for some time. In fact, even today, although bits of speleothems can be found in the eroded hardened surface sediments
there are few, if any, dolomite blocks. We presume that they were removed along with the upper part of the infilled, cavern
along with the country rock as the surface continued to erode.
Although it may not be possible to reconstruct a complete strati-graphic sequence involving the whole of the site, we have
presented summary of evidence here that shows it is possible to trace stratigraphic relationships from the base of the Ancient
Entrance to the top of the Cone and which includes the Grey Breccia and the two other bone breccias. Present work is focussed
on completion of a new chronology by comparing our site magnetostratigraphy with the global polarity timescale.
The speleothem deposition today in any of the caves of the Makapansgat area, with its annual rainfall of about 700mm, is extremely
low. It is commonly recognised by karst geomorphologists (eg, Ford and Williams, 1989) that massive deposits of speleothem
are characteristic of humid tropical to semi-tropical karsts. Hence, at the time of their formation some 3 Ma or more ago,
the massive speleothem deposits are evidence for a warmer, and certainly a much wetter, climate than that of today. 相似文献

Three closely related species of the genus Probles Förster, P. fulgida
sp. n., P. korusa
sp. n. and P. rukora
sp. n., belong to the subgenus Euporizon Horstmann and differ from other Palearctic species of the genus by a combination of long and apically weakly sinuate ovipositor and short temple. These three species are assigned to a newly designated fulgida species-group, and a portion of the key for identification of this species-group is provided. Based on the shape of the ovipositor apex, the fulgida species-group resemble members of the subgenus Microdiaparsis Horstmann but are distinct in having a much shorter temple. 相似文献

The scarcity of Neandertal remains from Southern Europe hampers our understanding of Neandertal variability, and can bias interpretations about Neandertal geographic variation. To address this issue, it is often important to reassess human remains that, while discovered decades ago, remain relatively unknown to the scientific community. In this contribution, we provide a complete state‐of‐the‐art comparative morphometric analysis of Leuca I, an unworn left second upper molar (LM2) discovered in 1958 in Bambino's Cave (near Santa Maria di Leuca, Apulia, Italy) and attributed to Homo neanderthalensis. Our study includes comparisons of standard metric and nonmetric data, a 2D image analysis of the occlusal surface and measurements of both 2D and 3D enamel thickness and dental tissue proportions. Although Leuca I follows the Neandertal M2s trend in some morphometric aspects (i.e., small relative occlusal polygon area), in other cases it falls to the higher end (for 3D average enamel thickness) or even outside (for 3D‐relative enamel thickness) the Neandertal M2 variability, thus increasing the known Neandertal range of variation. A study was conducted using ten genetically diverse genotypes along with their 45F1 (generated by diallel mating) under normal and salt stress conditions. Although, tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is moderately sensitive to salinity but more attention to salinity is yet to be required in the production of tomato. In present study, germination rate, speed of germination, dry weight ratio and Na+/K+ ratio in root and shoot, were the parameters assayed on three salinity levels; control, 1.0 % NaCl and 3.0 % NaCl with Hoagland’s solution. Increasing salt stress negatively affected growth and development of tomato. When salt concentration increased, germination of tomato seed was reduced and the time needed to complete germination lengthened, root/shoot dry weight ratio was higher and Na+ content increased but K+ content decreased. Among the varieties, Sel-7 followed by Arka Vikas and crosses involving them as a parent were found to be the more tolerant genotypes in the present study on the basis of studied parameters. 相似文献
