In intensive rearing, birds are exposed to frequent changes in both their social and physical environments, and this can have an impact on animal welfare under commercial conditions. The aim of the present study was to compare the emotional responses induced by social and non-social changes and to study the influence of the familiarity on these responses.Twenty-two female quail were first reared with a ball in 15–20-individual groups for 3 weeks from hatching. Then, each experimental subject was allocated either a familiar congener (CONG) or a familiar object (BALL). At 6 weeks of age the birds were fitted with a telemetric device to collect motor and cardiac activities. After that, each subject was exposed first to a separation from its cage-mate/familiar object, and secondly to the (re-)introduction of either the cage-mate/familiar object or of an unknown conspecific/another ball. Emotional responses were assessed through behavioural reactions and heart rate variability. Before being separated, both BALL and CONG quail showed stereotyped pacing that was more pronounced in BALL quail. BALL quail were not affected by the ball withdrawal, unlike CONG quail which reacted to the separation from their cage-mate by reducing activity and exploratory behaviour (P < 0.05). After the re-introduction, BALL quail remained closer to their ball and CONG quail spent more time with “stretched necks” than before the separation (P < 0.05). Surprisingly, CONG quail showed less stereotyped pacing when their partner was removed and recovered the initial level of stereotyped behaviour when their cage-mate was re-introduced (P < 0.01). Likewise, CONG quail also recovered the initial values of heart rate after the re-introduction of their cage-mate, indicating an increase in sympathetic activity compared to the isolation period. When the unfamiliar congener or ball was introduced in their cage, BALL quail pecked the unknown ball more than the familiar ball and had more contact with it (P < 0.05) and CONG quail had more contact with the unknown congener than with the cage-mate (P < 0.05).In conclusion, the quail appeared to experience a negative affective state before being separated, and there was no clear evidence of negative emotion in quail in response to the separation from either a social partner or an inanimate object. Nevertheless, the emotional responses of the quail in reaction to the (re-)introduction was influenced by the familiarity of the congener or the ball. Finally, changes in the quail's social environment induced more behavioural and cardiac modifications than changes in its non-social environment.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the grazing, social and comfort behaviour of the indigenous purebred Ankole cattle breed and crossbred (Holstein × Ankole) animals under typical management conditions in south western Uganda. Twelve focal animals in each of four groups (two groups per genotype) were observed regarding their grazing, social and comfort behaviour on pasture. No significant differences in grazing behaviour patterns (eating, walking, standing) were found between the genotypes. Resting occurred only very rarely in both genotypes. Walking distances of Ankole and Ankole × Holstein crosses were also similar. There was no difference in the occurrence of agonistic interactions between the two genotypes. However, Ankole cattle engaged in more non-agonistic social interactions than their crossbred counterparts. Individual distances were lower in Ankole heifers and more herd mates were found within a radius of 5 m around the Ankole animals. The most important comfort behaviour pattern in both genotypes was self-licking, which occurred to similar frequency in Ankole and crossbred heifer groups. Crossbred animals scratched themselves and rubbed on objects more often than Ankole heifers.Although Ankole cattle and their Holstein crosses did not differ in grazing, distances walked and agonistic behaviours, the significant differences between the two genotypes in herd cohesion and comfort behaviour may pose challenges on the management of crossbred animals under extensive open grazing conditions as present in south western Uganda. Thus, apart from (re)productive performance traits, behavioural traits of both genotypes may also be taken into account for breeding decisions and management under current production conditions.  相似文献

Nile tilapia social position (Oreochromis niloticus) can be mediated by multiple channels, including chemical communication. Absence of chemical cues in the environment prevents hierarchical settlement among pairs, and enhances time spent in confrontations. The aim of this study was to test the effect of continuously renewed water flow on the establishment of hierarchical dominance in Nile tilapia juveniles. In this condition, a high frequency of attacks and disruption on hierarchical stability were expected because chemical cues for hierarchy maintenance could be washed out. After 3 days in isolation, the fish were paired by standard size but not by sex, and submitted to two conditions: continuously renewed water flow (RENEWED, n = 7) and non-renewed water flow (NONRENEWED, n = 8). The paired fish were placed in an aquarium (40 cm × 30 cm × 40 cm) for 3 h; four 10-min sessions were video-recorded: the first, immediately after the fish were paired and the others 1, 2, and 3 h after pairing. Hierarchy was identified by a dominance index (DI = given attacks/received + given attacks) for each fish. The hierarchical stability was achieved by analyzing the difference between dominant DI and subordinate DI (DI-D). Hierarchy was established in both groups after second session because the DI was significantly higher for one fish of the pair. The frequency of attacks of the dominant fish in RENEWED and NONRENEWED conditions was similar in all observation sessions. The attack frequency by subordinate fish was also similar during the first three sessions (2-h pairing). However, the frequency of attacks by subordinate fish in the RENEWED condition was higher than in the NONRENEWED situation at the fourth observation session (means ± S.E.: RENEWED = 2.83 ± 0.94 × 10 min−1 and NONRENEWED = 0.25 ± 0.16 × 10 min−1; Mann–Whitney, p = 0.04). At this point, a significant reduction of the DI-D was observed (means ± S.E.: RENEWED = 0.70 ± 0.11 and NONRENEWED = 1,00 ± 0.002; Mann–Whitney, p = 0.04). The changes in DI-D were related to more frequent attacks by the subordinated fish in renewed water flow. According to our results, the unsteady agonistic interaction under renewed water flow leads to social instability. Thus, continuous water renewing can wash out relevant chemical substances and therefore disturb the dominance recognition by subordinate fish.  相似文献

The impact of visitor crowd size on captive animal behaviour can be difficult to interpret in many institutions due to the lack of variation in crowd size over short periods of time. In attempts to compare greater variation in crowd size, animal behaviour is often compared over conditions that create additional confounds, such as day of week or season. Fluctuations in attendance over the holiday season at Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park provided an opportunity to examine the impact of variation in crowd size on gorilla behaviour without the confounds found in many other studies. Ten western lowland gorillas (Gorilla g. gorilla) in a bachelor group (n = 4) and a family group (n = 6) were observed over a period of 8 weeks in late 2005. Observations were classified into Large Crowd and Small Crowd days and a repeated-measures ANOVA procedure was conducted to determine the effects of crowd size and social group on gorilla behaviour patterns. Few overall differences were found in behaviour during the Large Crowd and Small Crowd conditions. However, similar to previous research, gorillas were less visible during the Large Crowd condition (F1,8 = 14.15, P = 0.01). There was also an interaction of crowd size and group (F1,8 = 7.58, P = 0.01), indicating the bachelor group of gorillas was more aggressive during the Large Crowd condition, whereas the family group showed no increase in aggression with large crowds. These results indicate the importance of providing complex enclosures with visual barriers to allow animals to move away from large crowds if they choose. Future research should focus on the individual characteristics of animals and enclosures that may contribute to behavioural differences in visitor–animal interaction research, as well as the proximate cues associated with behaviour change when exposed to large crowds.  相似文献

Social environment can represent a major source of stress affecting cortisol and/or corticosterone levels, thereby altering the immune response. We have investigated the effects of social isolation on the development of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in female Calomys callosus, a natural reservoir of this protozoan parasite. Animals were divided in groups of five animals each. The animals of one group were kept together in a single cage. In a second group, four females were kept together in a cage with one male. In the final group, five individuals were kept isolated in private cages. The isolated animals showed body weight reduction, decreased numbers of peritoneal macrophages, lower global leucocytes counts, smaller lytic antibody percentage and a significantly higher level of blood parasites compared to the other animals. Their behavior was also altered. They were more aggressive than grouped females, or females exposed to the presence of a male. These results suggest that isolation creates a distinct social behavior in which immunity is impaired and pathogenesis is enhanced.  相似文献

Restoration of mangroves is often considered a way to minimize losses incurred from their decline and to provide additional services to coastal communities. However, the success of restoration programs is often focused on biological or ecological criteria. The situation is no exception in Bangladesh, which houses the world’s largest mangrove plantations. This study has been undertaken in a south-central estuarine island (Nijhum Dwip) of the Bangladesh coast and aims to understand societal perception on the achievements of a plantation program. Through 110 household interviews and seven group discussions, an assessment was conducted of peoples’ perception about major flora and fauna of the mangrove ecosystem, benefits derived from the forest, present condition of the forest, causes of degradation, and ways to improve the situation. Around one-fourth of the respondents mentioned that they were highly dependent on the ecosystem. The most important perceived benefits were: provision of raw materials, prevention against natural disasters, climate regulation and soil retention. However, the majority (>80%) of the respondents perceived the ecosystem to be degrading. Encroachment and illicit felling were identified as the main causes of such degradation. In order to arrest the continued degradation allowed by conventional forest management flaws, adaptive co-management has been recommended to conserve this ecosystem in a more equitable way.  相似文献

The paper presents a case study of the changes in organisational culture of volunteer biodiversity monitoring organisations and is based on ethnographic research of Bird Watching and Bird Study Association of Slovenia (DOPPS). In the authors’ opinion, the dynamics of organisation’s culture is influenced by the emerging opposition between professionalism on one side and voluntarism on the other. It is explained that professionalism, though being a necessary developmental stage, may have a negative impact on voluntarism and may result in the reduction of the initial altruistic sentiments among members and hence decrease their willingness to participate. On the other hand, if an organisation depends entirely on volunteers, it may not survive and flourish in a changing socio-political environment. The paper is intended to provide a feasible solution for successful development of similar organisations facing constantly changing settings by erasing boundaries between categories of volunteers and professionals, which mitigates the dialectic processes.

We manipulated the number of saprotrophic fungi in either a complex multi-resource substratum (sterilized forest soil), or a single-resource substratum (powdered cellulose). The substrates were inoculated with five common species of soil fungi in all possible combinations (from monocultures to five species in combination). In both substrates, the rate of organic matter decomposition was positively associated with species richness. The effect of fungal diversity was much stronger in the uniform single-resource substrate ( r 2 = 0.455, P  < 0.0001) than in soil ( r 2 = 0.154, P  < 0.0001). The results document that species richness of microbial decomposers strongly affects decomposition processes, at least at the species poor end of the diversity gradient. Both, 'sampling effect' and 'species complementarity effect' contributed to the community response with the latter being much more pronounced in uniform substrate than in soil. This indicates that facilitative interactions are more important than resource partitioning for positive effects of species richness.  相似文献

Although ecologists have speculated that sublethal predation can impact prey dynamics, consequences of these predator effects have seldom been experimentally tested. In soft‐sediment marine communities, fishes crop extended feeding siphons of buried clams, potentially causing clams to reduce their burial depth, thereby enhancing their susceptibility to excavating lethal predators. We simulated cropping of the confamilial clams, Protothaca staminea and Venerupis philippinarum, by removing the top 40% of siphons, which caused each species to burrow 33–50% shallower than conspecifics with intact siphons. To examine subsequent consequences of reduced burial depth, we exposed cropped and intact clams to natural levels of predation in the field. Because of a naturally longer siphon, Protothaca, even after cropping, remained at relatively safe burial depths. In contrast, siphon cropping nearly doubled the mortality rate of Venerupis. Thus, while sublethal predation facilitates lethal predation, this linkage depends on specific life history characteristics, even among ecologically similar species.  相似文献

Obesity is a rapidly growing public health issue. This paper investigates obesity's relationship to individuals' wealth by analyzing data from a large U.S. longitudinal socio-economic survey. The results show a large negative association between BMI and White female's net worth, a smaller negative association for Black women and White males and no relationship for Black males. Weight changes and dieting also appear associated with wealth changes. Individuals who lose small amounts of weight experience little change in net worth, but those who lose large amounts of weight have a dramatically improved financial position, with Whites showing larger changes than Blacks.  相似文献
