The roles of hybridization and of introgression as potential threats to small native populations are current topics of interest both for evolutionary and conservation biologists. Two factors are mainly involved in the threat to natural populations through hybridization: demographic swamping and genetic assimilation. At prealpine locations, twoSaxifraga species with very different growth habits,S. aizoides andS. mutata, form a hybrid,S. ×hausmannii. Investigation of meiosis and crossing experiments revealed regular pairing of the 26 chromosomes and development of viable seeds in the hybrid. Analysis of hybrid indices, GPI allozymes, germination experiments and seed sizes showed an intermediate position ofS. ×hausmannii between its parental species.Saxifraga aizoides andS. mutata were separated by only weak hybridization barriers. Introgression occurred mostly in direction ofS. aizoides, although to a small amount. There is no actual threat to small, prealpine populations ofS. aizoides andS. mutata through interspecific gene flow because hybridization is localized, resulting from different flowering phenologies of the parental species and from the narrow habitat requirements ofS. ×hausmannii, which are similar to those ofS. aizoides. The major threat to local, prealpine populations ofS. aizoides andS. mutata is the loss of landscape dynamics. Both species need open erosion slopes for successful recruitment.  相似文献

The plant-to-plant movement of aphids was investigated by the simulation technique in this report. Trials satisfying the following conditions are repeated and the results are compared withShiyomi 's model (1967).
  1. An arbitrary individual moves at any moment.
  2. The individual moves straightly forward an arbitrary direction and climbs up the plant that he first encounters with.
  3. There is no concentrative birth and death.
Some of the results are as follows:
  1. For an ideal state of movement, an equation describing the relationship between the frequency of actual movement and the degree of changes in the spatial distribution by movement was obtained.
  2. The actual movements, whose frequency we cannot count, changes the spatial distribution of insects, and this change can be evaluated by the changes of values of the parameters contained inShiyomi 's model. Using the statement (i), we can also estimate the frequency of movements of aphids in the ideal (extreme) state.

Lianas are a quintessential feature of tropical forests and are often perceived as being poorly studied. However, liana removal studies may be one of the most common experimental manipulations in tropical forest ecology. In this review, we synthesize data from 64 tropical liana removal experiments conducted over the past 90 yr. We explore the direction and magnitude of the effects of lianas on tree establishment, growth, survival, reproduction, biomass accretion, and plant and animal diversity in ecological and forestry studies. We discuss the geographical biases of liana removal studies and compare the various methods used to manipulate lianas. Overall, we found that lianas have a clear negative effect on trees, and trees benefitted from removing lianas in nearly every study across all forest types. Liana cutting significantly increased light and water availability, and trees responded with vastly greater reproduction, growth, survival, and biomass accumulation compared to controls where lianas were present. Removing lianas during logging significantly reduced damage of future merchantable trees and improved timber production. Our review demonstrates that lianas have an unequivocally detrimental effect on every metric of tree performance measured, regardless of forest type, forest age, or geographic location. However, lianas also appear to have a positive contribution to overall forest plant diversity and to different animal groups. Therefore, managing lianas reduces logging damage and improves timber production; however, the removal lianas may also have a negative effect on the faunal community, which could ultimately harm the plant community.  相似文献

Interactions between multiple ecosystem stressors are expected to jeopardize biological processes, functions and biodiversity. The scientific community has declared stressor interactions—notably synergies—a key issue for conservation and management. Here, we review ecological literature over the past four decades to evaluate trends in the reporting of ecological interactions (synergies, antagonisms and additive effects) and highlight the implications and importance to conservation. Despite increasing popularity, and ever-finer terminologies, we find that synergies are (still) not the most prevalent type of interaction, and that conservation practitioners need to appreciate and manage for all interaction outcomes, including antagonistic and additive effects. However, it will not be possible to identify the effect of every interaction on every organism''s physiology and every ecosystem function because the number of stressors, and their potential interactions, are growing rapidly. Predicting the type of interactions may be possible in the near-future, using meta-analyses, conservation-oriented experiments and adaptive monitoring. Pending a general framework for predicting interactions, conservation management should enact interventions that are robust to uncertainty in interaction type and that continue to bolster biological resilience in a stressful world.  相似文献

IntroductionA mathematical 3D model of an existing computed tomography (CT) scanner was created and used in the EGSnrc-based BEAMnrc and egs_cbct Monte Carlo codes. Simulated transmission dose profiles of a RMI-465 phantom were analysed to verify Hounsfield numbers against measured data obtained from the CT scanner.Methods and materialsThe modelled CT unit is based on the design of a Toshiba Aquilion 16 LB CT scanner. As a first step, BEAMnrc simulated the X-ray tube, filters, and secondary collimation to obtain phase space data of the X-ray beam. A bowtie filter was included to create a more uniform beam intensity and to remove the beam hardening effects. In a second step the Interactive Data Language (IDL) code was used to build an EGSPHANT file that contained the RMI phantom which was used in egs_cbct simulations. After simulation a series of profiles were sampled from the detector model and the Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) algorithm was used to reconstruct transversal images. The results were tested against measured data obtained from CT scans.ResultsThe egs_cbct code can be used for the simulation of a fan beam CT unit. The calculated bowtie filter ensured a uniform flux on the detectors. Good correlation between measured and simulated CT numbers was obtained.ConclusionsIn principle, Monte Carlo codes such as egs_cbct can model a fan beam CT unit. After reconstruction, the images contained Hounsfield values comparable to measured data.  相似文献

Tetanus toxoid (TTd) is a highly immunogenic, detoxified form of tetanus toxin, a causative agent of tetanus disease, produced by Clostridium tetani. Since tetanus disease cannot be eradicated but is easily prevented by vaccination, the need for the tetanus vaccine is permanent. The aim of this work was to investigate the possibility of optimizing TTd purification, i.e., ammonium sulfate precipitation process. The influence of the percentage of ammonium sulfate, starting amount of TTd, buffer type, pH, temperature, and starting purity of TTd on the purification process were investigated using optimal design for response surface models. Responses measured for evaluation of the ammonium sulfate precipitation process were TTd amount (Lf/mL) and total protein content. These two parameters were used to calculate purity (Lf/mgPN) and the yield of the process. Results indicate that citrate buffer, lower temperature, and lower starting amount of TTd result in higher purities of precipitates. Gel electrophoresis combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–mass spectrometric analysis of precipitates revealed that there are no inter-protein cross-links and that all contaminating proteins have pIs similar to TTd, so this is most probably the reason for the limited success of purification by precipitation.  相似文献

Well‐defined productivity–precipitation relationships of ecosystems are needed as benchmarks for the validation of land models used for future projections. The productivity–precipitation relationship may be studied in two ways: the spatial approach relates differences in productivity to those in precipitation among sites along a precipitation gradient (the spatial fit, with a steeper slope); the temporal approach relates interannual productivity changes to variation in precipitation within sites (the temporal fits, with flatter slopes). Precipitation–reduction experiments in natural ecosystems represent a complement to the fits, because they can reduce precipitation below the natural range and are thus well suited to study potential effects of climate drying. Here, we analyse the effects of dry treatments in eleven multiyear precipitation–manipulation experiments, focusing on changes in the temporal fit. We expected that structural changes in the dry treatments would occur in some experiments, thereby reducing the intercept of the temporal fit and displacing the productivity–precipitation relationship downward the spatial fit. The majority of experiments (72%) showed that dry treatments did not alter the temporal fit. This implies that current temporal fits are to be preferred over the spatial fit to benchmark land‐model projections of productivity under future climate within the precipitation ranges covered by the experiments. Moreover, in two experiments, the intercept of the temporal fit unexpectedly increased due to mechanisms that reduced either water loss or nutrient loss. The expected decrease of the intercept was observed in only one experiment, and only when distinguishing between the late and the early phases of the experiment. This implies that we currently do not know at which precipitation–reduction level or at which experimental duration structural changes will start to alter ecosystem productivity. Our study highlights the need for experiments with multiple, including more extreme, dry treatments, to identify the precipitation boundaries within which the current temporal fits remain valid.  相似文献

FRET has emerged as an important tool for studying intracellular processes and interactions between biomolecules. Intracellular donor and acceptor molecules are distributed in individual organelles that usually have complex non-continuous shape. Consequently, background pixels arising from fluorophore-free regions of the cell are proximal to FRET-positive pixels, leading to systemic errors in the estimated FRET values. This study introduces a new FRET(TH) algorithm for FRET estimation by acceptor photobleaching that separates the FRET-positive pixels from the background by applying user-defined thresholds for pixel selection. The FRET(TH) algorithm was validated by analysis of interactions between fluorescently tagged proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum using acquired and simulated images. The novel algorithm showed superior performance to the regular FRET calculation algorithm in acquired images and in most simulations. The developed algorithm was incorporated into the FRETcalc plugin for ImageJ program that enables user-defined choices of thresholds for calculation of FRET by acceptor photobleaching.  相似文献
