It is widely believed that the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) rarely or never feeds on sugar in nature. If so, the need for supplemental blood-feeding may be increased and this would help to explain why it is such an efficient malaria vector. Nonetheless, both sexes of this mosquito species readily imbibe and digest sugar solutions, and sugar is a staple of laboratory colonies. In this study, we investigated whether An. gambiae will feed on the extra-floral nectar of three common peridomestic plants in Africa, and on honeydew of the mealybug Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni-Tozetti) (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Pseudococcidae), and how this affects survivorship. We found that both males and females of An. gambiae provided with vegetative parts of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) survived as well (x = 26.3 and 19.2 days, respectively) as they did on 50% sucrose solution (x = 29.7 and 24.3 days, respectively) and much longer than they did on water alone (x = 1.8 days, both sexes). Females provided with mealybug honeydew also lived substantially longer (x = 16.5 days) than those on water alone. Males and females provided with vegetative parts of castorbean (Ricinus communis L.) also survived much longer (x = 12.7 and 7.8 days, respectively) than on water, but those provided with flowering lantana (Lantana camara L.) did not. Anthrone tests of females after one night of exposure to these potential energy sources confirmed that they obtained fructose from cassava, from mealybug honeydew, and from non-flowering castorbean, but not from lantana or from castorbean lacking its petiolar nectaries. Previous laboratory studies had shown that sugar availability affects the survival and biting frequency of An. gambiae. It now appears that this mosquito can locate natural sources of plant sugar readily and utilize them effectively. Nectar-producing plants in the domestic environment may play a significant role in this mosquito's energy budget and malaria vectorial capacity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plants adjust the distribution of photosynthetic capacity and chlorophyll to canopy density. The importance of the gradient in the red : far-red ratio (R : FR) relative to the irradiance gradient was studied for its perception with respect to this partitioning of photosynthetic resources. Whether the relative importance of these two signals varied between six species of different growth habit (Phaseolus vulgaris, Lysimachia vulgaris, Hedera helix, Ficus benjamina, Carex acutiformis and Brachypodium pinnatum) was investigated further. METHODS: Single leaves of plants were shaded in daylight by a spectrally neutral filter or a leaf. In another experiment, leaves were treated with supplemental FR. In most cases, treatment effects were evaluated after 2 weeks. KEY RESULTS: Nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity (Amax) per leaf area, parameters pertaining to between-leaf resource partitioning, were strongly reduced in neutral shade but not additionally by spectral leaf shade. Supplemental FR reduced these parameters also, except in Carex. Acceleration of induction of senescence was observed in spectral leaf shade in primary bean leaves. Amax per unit chlorophyll, a parameter pertaining to within-leaf resource partitioning, was reduced in neutral shade, but not in spectral leaf shade or supplemental FR. CONCLUSIONS: Signalling mechanisms associated with perception of the R : FR gradient in canopies were less important than those associated with the irradiance gradient for between-leaf and within-leaf partitioning of photosynthetic resources. The relative importance of the signals differed between species because Carex was the only species for which no indications were found for an involvement of the spectral gradient in perception of canopy density.  相似文献

Growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and fermentative ethanol production in the presence of acetic and lactic acids was measured in whole corn mash. In this industrial medium, as compared to glucose minimal medium, the yeast had increased tolerance to organic acid stress. It was concluded that the increased buffering capacity of whole corn mash, resulting in decreased concentration of undissociated acid, was responsible for this phenomenon.  相似文献

Baker's yeast suspensions were incubated at different pressures (from 1 bar to 6 bar) and different gases [air, O(2) and a mixture of 8% (v/v) CO(2), 21% O(2) and N(2)]. Raising the air pressure from 1 bar to 6 bar stimulated cell growth but had no effect on leavening ability or viability of the cells. A 50% reduction of the CO(2) produced in dough occurred with 6 bar O(2) which also stopped growth. The fermentative capacity of the cells was stimulated by the cells exposure to increased CO(2) partial pressure up to 0.48 bar.  相似文献

Proteins folding according to a classical two-state system characteristically show V-shaped chevron plots. We have previously interpreted the symmetrically curved chevron plot of the protein U1A as denaturant-dependent movements in the position of the transition state ensemble (TSE). S6, a structural analog of U1A, shows a classical V-shaped chevron plot indicative of straightforward two-state kinetics, but the mutant LA30 has a curved unfolding limb, which is most consistent with TSE mobility. The kinetic m-values (derivatives of the rate constants with respect to denaturant concentration) in themselves depend on denaturant concentration. To obtain complementary information about putative mobile TSEs, we have carried out a thermodynamic analysis of the three proteins, based on data for refolding and unfolding over the range 10 degrees C to 70 degrees C. The data at all temperatures can be fitted to two-state model systems. Importantly, for all three proteins the activation heat capacities are, within error, identical to the heat capacities measured in independent experiments under equilibrium conditions. Although the equilibrium heat capacities are essentially invariant with regard to denaturant concentration, the activation heat capacities, similar to the structurally equivalent kinetic m-values, show marked denaturant dependence. Furthermore, the values of beta++ at different denaturant concentrations measured by m-values and by heat capacity values are very similar. These observations are consistent with significant transition state movements within the framework of two-state folding. The basis for TSE movement appears to be enthalpic rather than entropic, suggesting that the binding energy of denaturant-protein interactions is a major determinant of the response of energy landscape contours to changing environments.  相似文献

The maize (Zea mays L.) kernel undergoes large changes in water content during its development. Whether such changes regulate the pattern of kernel development or are simply a consequence of it has not yet been established because other factors, such as assimilate supply, can also affect the rate and duration of kernel growth. This study was conducted to determine whether variation in kernel weight (KW) in response to source-sink treatments is mediated by a change in kernel water relations. Two hybrids were sown at three stand densities (one, eight and 18 plants m-2), and kernel numbers were restricted to control the post-flowering source-sink ratio within each stand density. Kernel development and water relations [water content, water potential (psiw), osmotic potential (psis) and turgor] were monitored throughout grain filling. Final KW varied from 253 to 372 mg per kernel in response to source-sink treatments. For both genotypes, variation in KW was a result of a change in kernel growth rate (r2 = 0.91; P < 0.001) and not in the duration of kernel filling. Final KW was closely correlated with maximum kernel water content (r2 = 0.94; P < 0.001) achieved during rapid dry matter accumulation. However, variation in KW was not reflected in kernel water status parameters (psiw, psis or turgor), which remained fairly stable across treatments. These results indicate that maximum water content provides an easily quantifiable measure of kernel sink capacity in maize. Kernel water status parameters may affect the duration of grain filling, but have no discernible impact on kernel growth rate.  相似文献

In situ photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (PNUE, photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf nitrogen) was investigated in species that commonly distributed at different altitudes (600–3700m above sea level) on Mount Kinabalu. Photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency was lower in species at higher altitudes, with a mean PNUE at 3700m being one-third as large as that at 600m. This difference in PNUE was larger than that explained by the biochemical response to lower air pressures only. Across altitudes a negative correlation between 13C abundance (13C) and PNUE was found. Species at higher altitudes tended to have higher 13C, suggesting that they had a lower conductance for CO2 diffusion from the air to chloroplasts. The lower conductance might be responsible for the lower PNUE in species at higher altitudes. Although leaf nitrogen content per unit area tended to be higher at higher altitudes, it did not seem to contribute to increasing photosynthetic rates. Thus, the idea that a higher nitrogen content at higher altitudes is a compensation for a lower PNUE was not supported. In contrast to the large difference in PNUE among altitudes, PNUE tended to converge within a narrow range among species growing at the same altitude.  相似文献

Studies in the laboratory with salmonids and now in the field with wild salmon clearly show that critical swimming performance has an optimum temperature. This temperature optimum is coincident with maximum aerobic scope and maximum cardiac scope. At a temperature that is higher than this optimum, however, whole animal performance declines abruptly. Evidence is presented here to suggest that this is directly associated with a decline in cardiac scope which limits oxygen supply to tissues. It is further suggested that the decline in maximum cardiac performance could reflect problems with the heart's own oxygen supply. The reasoning behind this suggestion is that, at temperatures at or below the optimum and probably because of a limitation on oxygen diffusion in skeletal muscle during exercise, venous oxygen does not fall below a threshold level during exercise, and so the heart receives just enough oxygen for its own muscular activity via the cardiac circulation (i.e. the venous return to the heart). However, because high temperature favours increased oxygen extraction by skeletal muscle, which consequently lowers venous oxygen, cardiac oxygen supply may become insufficient to meet cardiac oxygen demand. The hypoxic myocardium then cannot maintain cardiac scope and internal oxygen delivery to tissue declines.  相似文献

The spider mite Tetranychus urticae shows variation in its dispersal capacity (i.e., the leaf quality at which a female decides to disperse). We were able to artificially select mites that had either a high or a low dispersal capacity, indicating that this trait was genetically controlled. We then compared correlated responses to this selection. Mites with a genetically high dispersal capacity (‘HD’ strains) had a higher diapause incidence and a lower performance compared to mites with a low dispersal capacity (‘LD’ strains). A possible effect of random genetic drift during the selection was negligible. Our results suggest that differential dispersal capacity is associated with contrasting life history patterns as a result of natural selection.
