The mechanical output of a muscle may be characterised by having distinct functional behaviours, which can shift to satisfy the varying demands of movement, and may vary relative to a proximo-distal gradient in the muscle-tendon architecture (MTU) among lower-limb muscles in humans and other terrestrial vertebrates. We adapted a previous joint-level approach to develop a muscle-specific index-based approach to characterise the functional behaviours of human lower-limb muscles during movement tasks. Using muscle mechanical power and work outputs derived from experimental data and computational simulations of human walking and running, our index-based approach differentiated known distinct functional behaviours with varying mechanical demands, such as greater spring-like function during running compared with walking; with anatomical location, such as greater motor-like function in proximal compared with the distal lower-limb muscles; and with MTU architecture, such as greater strut-like muscles fibre function compared with the MTU in the ankle plantarflexors. The functional indices developed in this study provide distinct quantitative measures of muscle function in the human lower-limb muscles during dynamic movement tasks, which may be beneficial towards tuning the design and control strategies of physiologically-inspired robotic and assistive devices.  相似文献

Background: Shift work has been associated with increased body mass index (BMI), metabolic disruption and increased chronic disease risk. Typically, these reports compare individuals who work the day shift to those who work the night shift. Because shift assignment is not random, differences may reflect other, unmeasured characteristics that account for outcome differences.

Objective: To compare dietary intake on days on which the participant worked the night shift to days on which she worked the day shift in a population of female nurses who work rotating shifts at a hospital.

Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 132 female registered nurses who work rotating shifts in surgical or internal medicine departments. Dietary intake was ascertained using food diaries and analyzed on Tzameret Nutrition Analysis Software (Israel Ministry of Health). Demographic and anthropometric variables were also recorded.

Results: Compared to dietary intake on a day the nurse worked the day shift, intake of the following nutrients increased significantly on the day she worked the night shift: energy; protein; carbohydrates; total fat; saturated fat; and calcium.

Discussion: A significant increase in calorie, macronutrient and calcium intake on days the night shift was worked compared to days the day shift was worked among female nurses who work rotating shifts was demonstrated. These findings could be extended to other professionals who work rotating shifts, including physicians and allied healthcare personnel. It appears that the difference detected may be influenced by the food supplied by the hospital as well as by increased food intake in general.  相似文献

We aimed to examine the effects of night work on salivary melatonin concentration during and subsequent to night work and the mediating role of light. We included 254 day workers and 87 night workers who were followed during 322 work days and 301 days off work. Each day was defined as the 24 hour period starting from the beginning of a night shift or from waking in the mornings with day work and days off. Light levels were recorded and synchronized with diary information (start and end of sleep and work). On average, participants provided four saliva samples per day, and these were analyzed for melatonin concentration by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Differences between day and night workers on work days and days off were assessed with multilevel regression models with melatonin concentration as the primary outcome. All models were stratified or adjusted by time of day. For light exposure, we estimated the total, direct and indirect effects of night work on melatonin concentrations obtaining 95% confidence intervals through bootstrapping. On work days, night workers showed 15% lower salivary melatonin concentrations compared with day workers (?15.0%; 95% CI: ?31.4%; 5.2%). During the night, light exposure mediated a melatonin suppression of approximately 6% (?5.9%, 95% CI: ?10.2%; ?1.5%). No mediating effect of light was seen during the day time. On days off, we observed no difference in melatonin concentrations between day and night workers. These findings are in accordance with a transient and partly light-mediated effect of night work on melatonin production.  相似文献

Urease is a highly efficient catalyst for the hydrolysis of urea with a rate approximately 10 14 times the rate of the noncatalyzed reaction. It has a long and distinguished history in the development of enzymology. In this work the properties of urease and its applications in biotechnology are reviewed, including urea content analysis in blood, urine, alcoholic beverages, natural water and environmental wastewaters; analysis of heavy metal content in natural waters, wastewaters and soil; determination of creatinine, arginine and IgG; urea removal from artificial kidney dialyzates, alcohol beverages and fertilizer wastewaters; wastewater reclamation for life support systems in space; pH control or shift for multi-enzyme reaction system; and urea hydrolysis as sources of ammonia or carbon dioxide in special cases. The aim of the investigation was to compare sleepiness and sleep on westward morning and evening flights. Seven morning‐crew pilots and seven evening‐crew pilots participated. Data were collected before, during, and after outward‐bound (westward) and homeward‐bound (eastward) flights across six time zones. A sleep/wake diary (with repeated sleepiness and performance ratings) and wrist actigraphy were used for data collection. Maximum sleep was obtained after return and minimum sleep before the outward‐bound flights. Actigraphy measures and sleep efficiency over the course of the study showed no significant differences between the morning and evening crews. There was a trend for a significant effect of morning vs. evening flight for time with heavy eyelids, with the homeward‐bound flight showing more time with heavy eyelids. There were no significant differences between morning and evening crews with regard to napping during the flight. The duration of wakefulness was longer for the evening flight crew. There were significant interactions for Karolinska sleepiness scale (KSS) self‐ratings on both the outward‐bound and homeward‐bound flights, and KSS was elevated during a considerable portion of the evening flights. Rated performance showed a significant time effect, but there was no difference in self‐ratings between morning and evening crews. Evening flights involve higher levels of sleepiness than morning flights, presumably because of the close proximity in time to the circadian trough of alertness.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to trace the consequences of insufficient sleep, in terms of chronic sleep reduction rather than acute sleep deprivation, on fatigue, mood, cognitive performance self‐estimations, and daytime sleepiness in different age‐social groups. The age group of the subjects reflects their social situation and their working time organization: adolescents (n=191) obeyed the strict school schedules with starting times often before 08:00 h; university students (n=115) had more flexible timetables; young employees (n=126) were engaged in regular morning schedules or irregular daytime hours or day and night shifts. A questionnaire study determined the declared need of sleep, self‐reported sleep length, chronic fatigue (using a scale comprised of eight fatigue symptoms and four mood and three cognitive items), and daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale). The declared need for sleep decreased in subsequent age groups from 9 h 23 min in school children to 8 h 22 min in university students and to 7 h 37 min in young employees. Consequently, the discrepancy between preferred and real sleep length (sleep deficit) was the largest in adolescents: 106 min. Females showed a greater need of sleep than males (p=.025) and significantly more fatigue, mood, and cognitive problems; they also exhibited higher level of daytime sleepiness (p<.000). The sleep index (reported sleep length related to requirements) correlated significantly with all health issues in women (p<.000), while only with fatigue symptoms in men (p=.013). Actual sleep length was unrelated to mood and fatigue issues; the declared individual need of sleep and sleep index showed significant associations, especially in the group of adolescents. The most frequent complaints of adolescents included tiredness on awakening (46%), nervousness, and general weakness; university students reported excessive drowsiness (50%), tension, and nervousness; employees suffered mostly from negative moods, such as tension (49%), nervousness, and irritability. The findings of the study indicate that chronic sleep loss seems to affect females more severely than males. The associations of fatigue and mood with sleep need and sleep index were more pronounced in younger subjects. Surprisingly, fatigue symptoms in school children and university students were as frequent as in hard‐working adults. Because the problem of insufficient sleep is already present in youngsters, their work time organization needs more attention.  相似文献

Women in developing countries face challenges in terms of managing their menstrual hygiene. They often do not possess the appropriate means, materials, or have access to suitable facilities. Using a newly released dataset for Burkina Faso and propensity score matching, we provide for the first time evidence of the impact of advanced menstrual hygiene management on work attendance. We show that the use of disposable sanitary pads rather than old cloth reduces work absenteeism of women by approximately 24% points. We report the robustness of the results with respect to alternative specifications of the propensity score model and investigate the results for samples stratified by education, wealth, marital status, and religion.  相似文献

Abstract: Lithium has been used clinically in the treatment of manic depression. However, its pharmacologic mode of action remains unclear. Characteristics of Li+ interactions in red blood cells (RBCs) have been identified. We investigated Li+ interactions on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells by developing a novel 7Li NMR method that provided a clear estimation of the intra- and extracellular amounts of Li+ in the presence of the shift reagent thulium-1,4,7,10-tetrazacyclododecane- N,N ', N ", N ‴-tetramethylene phosphonate (HTmDOTP4−). The first-order rate constants of Li+ influx and efflux for perfused, agarose-embedded SH-SY5Y cells in the presence of 3 m M HTmDOTP4− were 0.055 ± 0.006 (n = 4) and −0.025 ± 0.006 min−1 (n = 3), respectively. Significant increases in the rate constants of Li+ influx and efflux in the presence of 0.05 m M veratridine indicated the presence of Na+ channel-mediated Li+ transport in SH-SY5Y cells. 7Li NMR relaxation measurements showed that Li+ is immobilized more in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells than in human RBCs.  相似文献
