To explore the possibility of using catalase for the treatment of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated injuries, the pharmacokinetics of bovine liver catalase (CAT) labeled with 111In was investigated in mice. At a dose of 0.1 mg/kg, more than 70% of 111In-CAT was recovered in the liver within 10 min after intravenous injection. In addition, 111In-CAT was predominantly recovered from the parenchymal cells (PC) in the liver. Increasing the dose retarded the hepatic uptake of 111In-CAT, suggesting saturation of the uptake process. This cell-specific uptake could not be inhibited by coadministration of various compounds which are known to be taken up by liver PC, indicating that the uptake mechanism of CAT by PC is very specific to this compound. The preventive effect of CAT on a hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury was examined in mice by measuring the GOT and GPT levels in plasma. A bolus injection of CAT at 5 min prior to the reperfusion attenuated the increase in the levels of these indicators in a dose-dependent manner. During recent work examining the effects of Bitou Bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata) invasion on native reptile assemblages in coastal heathland vegetation in Eastern Australia, unplanned spot‐spraying of glyphosate occurred at some of our experimental sites invaded by Bitou Bush. We used this unexpected herbicide application as an opportunity to provide a preliminary assessment of the short‐term impacts on reptiles of glyphosate spot‐spraying of Bitou Bush. Using an M‐BARCI design, we compared reptile assemblages among uninvaded (reference) sites, invaded (control) sites and invaded and sprayed (impact) sites before and after spraying. We found no significant short‐term (7 – 10 months) differences in reptile abundance, species richness or assemblage composition among invaded, uninvaded and sprayed sites before and after glyphosate application. We cautiously interpret our results to generate a preliminary finding that spot‐spraying of Bitou Bush with glyphosate appears not to have a deleterious effect on reptile assemblages at seven and ten months following herbicide application. While we would not recommend basing management decisions on the outcomes of our study alone, we suggest that our findings can be used to assist in the development of strategic analyses of glyphosate impacts on native flora and fauna. 相似文献

Most bioassessment programs rest on the assumption that species have different niches, and that abiotic environmental conditions and changes therein determine community structure. This assumption is thus equivalent to the species sorting perspective (i.e. that species differ in their responses to environmental variation) in metacommunity ecology. The degree to which basing bioassessment on the species sorting perspective is reasonable is likely to be related to the spatial extent of a study and the characteristics of the organism groups (e.g. dispersal ability) with which the effects of anthropogenic changes are assessed. Recent findings in metacommunity research have stressed that community structure is determined not only by local abiotic environmental conditions but also by biotic interactions and dispersal‐related effects. For example, dispersal limitation may prevent community structure recovery from the effects of a putative stressor, as organisms may not be able to disperse to all sites in a region. Mass effects (i.e. the presence of species in environmentally suboptimal sites due to high dispersal rates from environmentally suitable sites) may, in turn, obscure the effects of a stressor, as dispersal from source sites (e.g. an unaltered site) allows persistence at sink sites (e.g. an anthropogenically altered site). Better bioassessment should thus take both niche‐ and dispersal‐related processes simultaneously into consideration, which can be accomplished by explicitly modelling spatial location as a proxy for dispersal effects. Such an integrated approach should be included in bioassessment programs using general multivariate approaches, predictive modelling, and multimetric indices. 相似文献

What is the phylogenetic placement of Dipteronia dyerana Henry? An example of plant species placement based on nucleotide sequences 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract DNA sequence data have been widely used to evaluate species delimitations and examine infraspecific relationships. However, species placements inferred from different nucleotide sequences are frequently in conflict. As an example of plant species placement based on nucleotide sequences, the phylogenetic placement of Dipteronia dyerana Henry (Aceraceae) was analyzed in the present study. The study species included eight Acer species (from different sections of Acer), two Dipteronia species, and two outgroup taxa. Phylogenetic trees based on five datasets (ITS, trnL‐F, trnD‐trnT, psbM‐trnD, and rpl16 regions) as well as their combined datasets were generated by using maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses. Further analyses were conducted to compare the strict consensus trees based on single regions and the combination of different regions. The results revealed a significant discrepancy among the phylogenetic placements of D. dyerana, inferred from various sequences. Phylogenetic trees using MP analysis based on trnD‐trnT, rpl16, and the four chloroplast combined sequences supported the genus Dipteronia as a monophyletic group, while in the other trees D. dyerana was positioned either in parallel with D. sinensis and Acer species or within the genus Acer. In ML analysis, only rpl16 and the four chloroplast combined sequence datasets supported the genus Dipteronia as a monophyletic group. We concluded that, although significant genetic differentiation occurred between D. dyerana and D. sinensis, D. dyerana was more advanced than D. sinensis. However, whether Dipteronia is monophyletic remains to be further investigated, e.g., by using more closely related taxa and more sequences. Furthermore, in addition to internal transcribed spacer sequences, more chloroplast gene sequences should be used for phylogenetic analyses of species. 相似文献

Abstract The purpose of this research was to explore the effect of temperature, light, and post-harvest period, and their interactions, on seed germination ecology of four common pasture species in the Mediterranean environment. Mature seeds of Diplotaxis erucoides, Hirschfeldia incana, Hyoseris scabra (Mediterranean distribution) and Sonchus oleraceus (cosmopolitan distribution) were subjected to seven constant temperatures (10–40°C, at intervals of 5°C) under continuous darkness, or a 12 h/12 h light/dark photoperiod at 30, 150 and 270 days after harvest (DAH). Cumulative germination and germination speed were determined. In all the tested species, except S. oleraceus, light significantly enhanced germination. S. oleraceus seeds maintained germination values over 90%, in a wide range of temperatures (10–35°C), in the dark as well as in light. Seeds of H. incana germinated well soon after seed dispersal. In D. erucoides and H. scabra, germination increased with storage period, while in S. oleraceus there was no effect of seed age. In all the species, moreover, no germination was recorded at 40°C. Temperature, light, and post- harvest requirement may be regarded as an adaptation strategy to ensure optimal conditions for seedling development and survival in Mediterranean species, while the species with a cosmopolitan distribution germinates under almost all tested conditions. 相似文献

The two sibling ant species Temnothorax nylanderi and Temnothorax crassispinus are widely distributed throughout deciduous forests in Europe. Their resemblance in morphology and similar ecological requirements suggest that they evolved from the same ancestral species in different glacial refugia and re-immigrated into Central Europe after the last ice age. Here, we show that the two species are parapatrically distributed in south-eastern Germany and hybridize along a narrow contact zone close to the continental divide. Phylogeographical data based on the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase subunit I and cytochrome b suggest that the dominant haplotypes for T. nylanderi and T. crassispinus might have diverged already 1.5–2 Mya. Intraspecific variability is extremely low in both species, which might be explained by severe bottlenecks during rapid postglacial expansion into Central Europe. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 223–234. 相似文献

Modelling the impacts of two exotic invasive species on a native butterfly: top-down vs. bottom-up effects 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
1. Exotic invasive species can influence population dynamics of native species through top-down or bottom-up forces. The present study examined separate and interactive effects of multiple exotic species invasions on the native mustard white butterfly, Pieris napi oleracea Harris (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), using a stochastic simulation model. 2. P. n. oleracea populations in North America have decreased regionally since the 1860s. Competition with an exotic congener (P. rapae L.), loss of native host plants and parasitism by the introduced broconid wasp (Cotesia glomerata L.), have been suggested to be independently responsible for its decline. The present study examined these hypotheses, as well as an alternative, invasion by an exotic crucifer, garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata[Bieb.] Cavara & Grande). 3. A stochastic simulation model of P. n. oleracea population dynamics revealed that decreasing the number of host plants available for oviposition and larval development (i.e. habitat loss), sharply reduced the probability of populations persistence and decreased population size for those that persisted. 4. Simulated invasion by garlic mustard also substantially decreased both probability of persistence (= 0 at approximately 50% cover) and mean population size. Persistence probability never reached zero under any C. glomerata scenarios, even when larval mortality in the second generation due to parasitism was 100%. The impact of garlic mustard was intensified by the addition of C. glomerata parasitism. 5. Results suggest that bottom-up forces, loss of host plants through forest understorey loss and/or garlic mustard invasion are the most important forces driving P. n. oleracea population decline. Parasitism by C. glomerata may interact to reduce P. n. oleracea populations more rapidly, but appears insufficient alone to cause local extinction. 相似文献
