Summary A group of wild, tuber-bearing species from Northwest Argentina, belonging to the series Tuberosa, Solarium spegazzini Bitt. (spg, 2n=2x=24), S. gourlayi Hawkes (grl, 2n=2x=24 and 2n=4x=48) and S. oplocense Hawkes (opl, 2n=6x=72), and Cuneolata, S. infundibuliforme Phil (ifd, 2n=2x=24), is being used to investigate the mode of origin of polyploids in the genus Solanum. 2n gametes have been detected in the diploid species ifd and spg and in a diploid race of grl, using cytological and breeding approaches. Twenty-two introductions of spg, 8 of grl and 26 of ifd have been tested for 2n pollen; 59%, 63% and 54% of them, respectively, had at least one 2n pollen producing plant. These introductions comprised 238, 76 and 235 plant respectively, of which 20, 16, and 32 plant produced 5% or more 2n pollen. The mechanism of 2n pollen formation was determined in several plant of 2x spg, 2x grl and 2x ifd. All of them were found to form diplandroids via parallel spindles. This mechanism, which gives meiotic products genetically equivalent to first division restitution gametes, is under control of the Mendelian recessive ps. The results suggest that the allele ps is widely distributed in natural populations of the three diploids, and that its frequency is very high. These species are seen as valuable material for population genetic studies, and for the eventual incorporation into a breeding scheme involving sexual polyploidization via 2n gametes.  相似文献

Summary In sexually mature male sticklebacks, the renal tubular cells are transformed from ion reabsorbing to mucus secreting cells and in these fish concomitant changes take place in the glomeruli.The present study compares glomerular structure of immature males in fresh water (controls) to those of mature males in fresh water and to immature male sticklebacks in seawater. Glomerular structure is markedly altered in the latter two groups and the changes are similar to a large extent. In these two groups the renal capsules and glomeruli are smaller and the lumina of the glomerular capillaries decrease in diameter, while the number and size of the endothelial fenestrations are reduced. Mesangial cells proliferate and the mesangial matrix greatly expands in both the centrolobular region and the subendothelial space around the capillaries. The secretory activity of the podocytes is enhanced and is responsible for the observed increase in thickness of the outer layer of the basal lamina, the lamina rara externa. The area covered by the filtration slit membranes is reduced, probably as a consequence of fusion of the pedicels of the podocytes. The permeability characteristics of the glomerular filtration barrier for macromolecules, as studied with ferritin injections, remain unaltered. However, the observed differences point to a reduction of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) during maturation in male sticklebacks, as well as during adaptation of sticklebacks to seawater. Synopsis The spawning and nesting behavior ofEtheostoma (Boleosoma) perlongum was investigated in the field and laboratory. Sexual dimorphism is highly developed in such features as genital papillae, first dorsal and paired fins, and nuptial coloration. A reproductive migration from mid-lake to shore occurs in the spring: males precede females to select nest sites under submerged sticks and other debris. The male excavates a depression beneath the submerged object. Gonad analysis indicates a single spawning season extending from March through June. Nests were found from late April to mid-June and were guarded by a single male for periods of 13 to 36 days. Males initiate courtship by lateral display, lead the female to the nest site and show the nest by inverting. The female responds by tail up, tail wag and circle; males also tail wag and circle. Spawning pairs invert, usually in unison, and orient head to head or, less often, head to tail. The female deposits eggs while holding her body in a weak S or J shape with the caudal peduncle held away from the spawning substrate while vibrating.  相似文献

Summary The postembryonic development of the antennal lobes of Periplaneta americana L. was examined with light- and electron-microscopical methods. There is no difference in the number of glomeruli and neurons in the antennal lobes of larval and adult animals. At hatching, the first larva already possesses the adult number of approximately 125 glomeruli and 500 to 560 deutocerebral neurons in the dorsolateral cell group of each antennal lobe. During postembryonic development the volume of the deutocerebral neurons increases three- to fourfold. The glomeruli of the first larva have about 7 % of the volume of the corresponding adult glomeruli. Since number, pattern, and size ratio of glomeruli (with the exception of the macroglomerulus) are constant in all larval stages and adult animals, it is possible to identify individual glomeruli. During the whole postembryonic development the ordinary glomeruli show a continuous volume increase, which parallels the increase in antennal sensory input. The macroglomerulus develops by way of special growth of two to four neuropil units, but not before the last three to four larval stages and only in males. Its growth precedes the formation of antennal pheromone receptors during the final molt; these receptors are known to project into the macroglomerulus. The development of the macroglomerulus in the last larval stages of the male may be caused by a genetically fixed growth program of specific deutocerebral neurons.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Scha 291/1)  相似文献

The age structures of both native and transplanted populations of the perennial herb, trout lily (Erythronium americanum), were analysed and found to have age-independent mortality rates. Cohort survival was greatest in populations growing on hardwood forested flood plains (60%), less in populations from gently sloping terraces with pit-and-mound microrelief (53%) and smallest (45%) for colonies on slopes steeper than 15°. The former habitat-type is the optimum for trout lily in Nova Scotia and in it the proportion of flowering bulbs can reach 35%. The second named habitat is widespread and characterised by fewer flowering bulbs (5–10%). In the latter habitat flowering bulbs are uniformly rare. Trout lily bulbs tend to be sterile until at least their eighth year. The high mortality rates of populations on steeply sloping, hardwood forested ground ensure minimal survival of bulbs beyond their sixth year. In the other two named habitats sufficient numbers of bulbs reach ages of 8 or 9 years for some to make the translation from the sterile to the flowering form. In all the habitats studied in Nova Scotia, propagation is typically by either runners or, less importantly, daughter bulbs, with the peak of activity in the bulbs third and fourth years. The plants of flood plains showed the greatest rates of vegetative propagation, by cohort, but many of the bulbs from colonies growing on steep slopes lacked runners or daughter bulbs. As all bulbs for the transplant experiments came from a single clone it can be concluded that trout lily plants in Nova Scotia have a sufficiently large genetic endowment for them to behave in the same manner as native populations of the species in the several habitats represented in the province.The figures were drafted in the cartography section of the University of Canterbury. Reassembly of tobacco mosaic virus from the isolated RNA and protein, supplied as a disk preparation consisting of over 75% as the disk aggregate, has been followed by the protection of the RNA from nuclease digestion. The sizes of the RNA fragments were determined on agarose/acrylamide gels.During the first few minutes the protected RNA is found to be “quantized” into discrete lengths, differing on average by about 50 or 100 nucleotides, corresponding to one or two turns of the virus helix and strongly supporting the hypothesis that elongation in the major direction, towards the 5′-hydroxyl end, is occurring by the direct addition of protein disks. Protected RNA of the full length found in tobacco mosaic virus is visible within six minutes of starting reassembly, and by 30 minutes most of the RNA is fully protected.  相似文献

The association behaviour of the coat protein of alfalfa mosaic virus strain VRU was studied by sedimentation analysis and electron microscopy. The results of this study were compared with the data obtained from similar studies with the coat protein of strain 425 (Driedonks et al., 1977). In the depolymerized state VRU protein is likely a dinier of the 24,050 molecular weight polypeptide chain. The main association product is a tubular structure with a diameter of about 180 Å. The optimum conditions for the reaction were polyphosphate-containing buffer at pH 6·5. Optical diffraction analysis of negatively stained specimens revealed a helical arrangement of the protein subunits in these assemblies. The same type of reaction product was found when the association reaction was carried out in the presence of polynucleotides. The length of the VRU particles is abnormally long compared to other alfalfa mosaic virus strains. This phenomenon can be ascribed to the tendency of the protein to polymerize into tubular rather than spherical particles.  相似文献

A large sample of the pycriogonid Anoplodactylus portus , collected from the Pacific side of the Panama Canal Zone, contains a high percentage of gynandromorphs. The literature on aquatic arthropod gynandromorphs is outlined. The nature and variations of the sexual mosaic population are described and discussed. The several morphological differences between normal and mosaic members of the population are illustrated, and the possible origin of these gynandromorphs is discussed.  相似文献

The translational efficiency of the coat protein gene of phage MS2 has been examined in vivo with respect to neighbouring sequences. The cloned MS2 DNA has been gradually shortened starting at the 5' or 3' terminus, and its effect on coat protein synthesis monitored. Removal of the 3'-terminal sequences had little influence. In contrast, the gradual removal of the 5'-terminal region profoundly reduces translation. Long before the ribosomal binding site (RBS) of the coat protein (CP) gene is reached, the yield of CP has dropped by one order of magnitude. Functional half-lives of the various messengers were found not to be significantly different. Available evidence indicates that the secondary structure of the RBS in native and shortened MS2 RNA is identical. We infer that important determinants for ribosome recognition lie 5' to the RBS region of the MS2 RNA coat gene.  相似文献
