Game theoretical models have been suggested to explain the maintenance of a remarkable variation in seed size across species in most types of vegetation. According to these models, which are based on the existence of a trade-off between seed size and seed number; smaller-seeded species can invade any species mixture due to their numerical advantage, and larger-seeded species can invade any species mixture due to their competitive superiority over smaller-seeded species during recruitment. However, till now, there is very limited evidence for seed size effects on recruitment interactions among different species. An experiment was designed using 16 species in Swedish grasslands, varying 384-fold in seed size. Species were sown pairwise and alone in disturbed versus undisturbed small plots in grazed versus ungrazed grassland, and the resulting recruitment was recorded. Seedling densities in the experimental plots were within the natural range. Both disturbance and grazing had a positive effect on recruitment. Seed size did not affect recruitment except from a tendency that increasing seed size made recruitment less dependent on disturbance. Recruitment of smaller-seeded species was not affected by the presence of larger-seeded species. Larger-seeded species did not generally win in direct contest. These results suggest that game theoretical models do not explain maintenance of seed size variation across species in these grasslands. Alternative explanations for seed size variation are that either small-scale heterogeneity provide conditions favouring a range of different seed sizes or other attributes than seed size effectively determine recruitment.  相似文献

We investigated whether the variation in T-cell-mediated immune function of blue tit nestlings affected their fledgling success and the probability of local survival. We studied the relationship between immune function and survival under two rearing conditions: control, unmanipulated, and experimentally enlarged broods. Brood enlargement had negative effects on nestling immune response. Immune response was positively related to fledgling success and it predicted the probability of local recruitment. However, the relationship between immune response and the probability of recruitment was significantly positive only among control broods and nonsignificant among enlarged broods. The effect of immune response on the recruitment probability was not affected by variation in body mass. Our study suggests that selection for immune responsiveness seems to be weak or even absent under unfavourable rearing conditions as simulated by brood size enlargement. Therefore, year-to-year environmental variation and environmental heterogeneity may constrain evolution towards higher immune responsiveness.  相似文献

Social insect foragers often transmit information about foodsources to nest mates. In bumble bees (Bombus terrestris), forexample, successful foragers use excited motor displays anda pheromone as communication signals. In addition, bees couldmake use of an indirect pathway of information flow, via thehoney stores. We show here that, indeed, bees in the nest continuouslymonitor honeypots and sample their contents, thus obtaininginformation on supply and demand of nectar. When there is aninflux of nectar into the nest, the colony deploys more workersfor foraging. The number of new foragers depends on sugar concentration.Foragers returning with high-quality sugar solution displaymore "excited runs" on the nest structure. The recruits' response,however, does not depend on modulated behavior by foragers:more workers start to forage with high quality of incoming nectar,even when this nectar is brought by a pipette. Moreover, weshow that the readiness of bees to respond to recruitment signalsor incoming nectar also depends on colony demand. When colonynectar stores are full, the response of bees to equal amountsof nectar influx is smaller than when stores are empty. Whencolony nectar stores are depleted, foragers spend more timerunning excitedly and less time probing pots in the nest andrun with higher average speed, possibly to disperse the alertingpheromone more efficiently. However, more bees respond to nectarinflux to empty stores, whether or not this is accompanied byforager signals. Thus, honeypots serve to store informationas well as food.  相似文献

Upon stimulation of cells with interleukin-1 (IL-1) the IL-1 receptor type I (IL-1RI) associated kinase-1 (IRAK-1) transiently associates to and dissociates from the IL-1RI and thereafter translocates into the nucleus. Here we show that nuclear translocation of IRAK-1 depends on its kinase activity since translocation was not observed in EL-4 cells overexpressing a kinase negative IRAK-1 mutant (EL-4(IRAK-1-K239S)). IRAK-1 itself, an endogenous substrate with an apparent molecular weight of 24kDa (p24), and exogenous substrates like histone and myelin basic protein are phosphorylated by nuclear located IRAK-1. Phosphorylation of p24 cannot be detected in EL-4(IRAK-1-K239S) cells. IL-1-dependent recruitment of IRAK-1 to the IL-1RI and subsequent phosphorylation of IRAK-1 is a prerequisite for nuclear translocation of IRAK-1. It is therefore concluded that intracellular localization of IRAK-1 depends on its kinase activity and that IRAK-1 may also function as a kinase in the nucleus as shown by a new putative endogenous substrate.  相似文献

Forest fragmentation facilitates the invasion of exotic species. This threat may be especially severe if forest fragments are surrounded by plantations of exotic species like Pinus radiata, an aggressive colonizer and shade-intolerant tree that has invaded successfully several native ecosystems of the southern hemisphere. In this study, we experimentally tested if the conditions of a successful seedling establishment P. radiata are fulfilled at the Coastal Maulino forest, an endemic fragmented forest of central Chile. Results demonstrated that seeds are dispersed into the native forests, however seedling establishment occurs only at the edges. We conclude that this exotic species is not invading native forests up to date. However, we suggest to conduct evaluations of seed rain and seedling establishment in the long term, in order to monitor the fate of this exotic species in fragmented native forest of Central Chile.  相似文献

Animals aid population growth and fitness in tropical forest communities through dispersal and negatively impact populations through seed predation. The interaction between dispersal and seed predation can produce distance- or density-dependence; powerful mechanisms for maintaining species diversity incorporated in the Janzen–Connell model. Large mammals, the highest biomass seed predators of intact Amazonian communities and at risk due to human disturbance, are potentially central to these interactions. This study tests the Janzen–Connell model and investigates the impact of mammalian seed predators on seedling recruitment and maintenance of tree diversity. Patterns of both vertebrate and invertebrate seed predation and seedling recruitment were studied in the two most abundant canopy tree species in western Amazonia (Arecaceae: Astrocaryum murumuru and Iriartea deltoidea). We specifically examined effects of both spatial and temporal variation of the highest biomass seed predator in southwest Amazonian forests, the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), on recruitment through disturbed and undisturbed sites and through a fortuitous 12 year natural extinction and recolonization event of T. pecari. Distance-dependent seedling recruitment was found in Astrocaryum and Iriartea at both sites. However, the median distance of seedlings was ~1.5× farther from reproductive adults in both palms at the undisturbed site. The number of Iriartea seeds escaping predation increased 6,000% in both space and time due to the decline of T. pecari abundance. The results demonstrate that Janzen–Connell effects are stronger in intact ecosystems and tie these mechanistically to changes in seed predator abundance. This study shows that anthropogenic changes in mammal communities decrease the magnitude of Janzen–Connell effects in Amazonian forests and may result in decreases in tree diversity.  相似文献

Estimates of age derived from daily ring counts from otoliths and capture rates of larval June sucker Chasmistes liorus were used to determine the relationship between discharge rates of the Provo River and residence time and patterns of larval drift. During 1997, larval drift occurred over a 22 day period when discharge rates were low (mean ±s.d. 3·2 ± 0·0 m3 s?1). In 1998, larval drift occurred in two separate events over a 40 day period. Discharge was higher during the first larval drift period (19 days; 24·8 ± 1·3 m3 s?1) and lower during the second larval drift period (17 days; 7·0 ± 0·9 m3 s?1). In 1997, no larval fish were collected at the lowermost transect on the Provo River (nearest Utah Lake), and few larvae >21 days of age were found. During the first drift period of 1998, larval C. liorus were collected at all transects, and mean age of larvae collected between upstream and downstream transects increased by c. 7 days. During the second drift period of 1998, only a few were collected in the lowermost transects, and age did not increase with proximity to the lake. Patterns in catch and age distribution of larval C. liorus in the lower Provo River suggest that recruitment failure occurs during the larval drift period in years with insufficient discharge to transport larvae into the lake.  相似文献

Models of climate change predict that its effects on animal populations will not always be negative, but most studies indicate negative associations between changes in climate and the phenology of animal migration and reproduction. For some populations, however, climate change may render particular environments more favourable, with positive effects on population growth. We used a 30-year population dataset on over 2000 Common Eiders Somateria mollissima at a colony in southwest Iceland to examine the response of this species to climate fluctuations. Eiders are strongly dependent on suitable climatic conditions for successful reproduction and survival. Temperatures in southwest Iceland, in both winter and summer, have generally increased over the past 30 years but have shown considerable fluctuation. We show that females laid earlier following mild winters and that year-to-year variation in the number of nests was related to the temperature during the breeding season 2 years previously. Milder summers could have positive effects on breeding success and offspring survival, producing an increase in nest numbers 2 years later when most Eiders recruit into the breeding population. In this part of their range, Eiders could benefit from a general warming of the climate.  相似文献
