Summary
Melandrium album (2n=24), a dioecious species with heteromorphic sex chromosomes (XY, males and XX, females), has a strong genetic commitment for sex determination. We report here a procedure for obtaining haploid plants from cultured anthers and show that genotype, pollen stage, cold treatment and certain culture media components are essential for a reproducible yield of embryos. Our procedure increased the number of responsive anthers and not the number of responsive microspores per anther. Most likely, our experimental system allows the recovery of competent microspores, and this on a medium containing either an auxin or a cytokinin. All of the 36 anther-derived plants tested expressed a female phenotypic sex instead of the theoretical one male one female ratio. Summary In order to obtain markers for the Y chromosome ofSilene latifolia, we pooled equal weights of leaf tissue from 18 female siblings into one sample and repeated the process with 18 male siblings. Pooling was intended to provide a common genetic background for each sample, leaving the absence or presence of the Y chromosome as the primary difference between the two samples. DNA was extracted from each sample and subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification with arbitrary 10 bp primers. Four of 60 primers used gave an amplification with the male DNA not found among those from the female DNA. Each of these was subsequently shown to provide a reliable marker for the Y chromosome. 相似文献

Summary Electroantennographic and single sensillum recordings were performed on male pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer, antennae. Responses to the sex pheromone component (2S, 3S, 7S)- 3,7-dimethyl-2-pentadecenyl (diprionyl) acetate (SSS:OAc), to the behavioral inhibitor (2S, 3R, 7R)-diprionyl acetate (SRR:OAc), to the six other enantiomers of diprionyl acetate, and to the biosynthetic precursor diprionol were recorded. Responses to trans-perillenal, a monoterpene identified in female gland extracts and to (2S, 3S, 7S)-diprionyl propionate (SSS:OPr), a field attractant for N. sertifer and some related sawfly species were also recorded.EAG recordings demonstrated a high antennal sensitivity to SSS:OAc and to SSS:OPr. A somewhat lower response was elicited by SRR:OAc.Single sensillum recordings revealed 8–12 different cells firing in each sensillum, corresponding to the number of cells observed in earlier morphological investigations. Out of these cells all, except one, responded to SSS:OAc and to SSS:OPr. No differences in the response to the two components could be observed. The largest amplitude cell in each sensillum was specifically tuned to the behavioral antagonist, SRR:OAc. Synopsis The very sparse data that are available on the abundance, population structure and biology of the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae off Grand Comoro are summarised, and some simple numerical analyses are carried out to explore certain aspects of the population dynamics, particularly the age-profile of the population. The object has not been to provide estimates of key demographic parameters, such as mortality rates, but to propose various scenarios that are useful for comparison with real data as they become available. The analysis also makes it possible to reach some preliminary conclusions that are relevant to the management of the coelacanth population. For instance, it appears that the catch rate of coelacanths by artisanal fishermen may have a negligible effect on coelacanth survivorship, and it is more likely that population size and structure are determined by natural mortality rates and birth rates. It is suggested that predation is the main cause of natural mortality and that the main predators of coelacanths are likely to be large sharks. Interference with the traditional patterns of the Comoran artisanal fishery may threaten the coelacanth. Several important gaps in our knowledge of coelacanth demography are identified. 相似文献

通过染色体组型分析,C带(BSG技术)分析及一种简便的Ag-NORs带分析,对四川湍蛙、理县湍蛙、棕点湍蛙和棘皮湍蛙的种间关系、染色体的演化及其性染色体等问题进行了初步探讨。结果表明:(1)四川湍蛙、理县湍蛙和棕点湍蛙之间的亲缘关系较近,而它们与棘皮湍蛙的亲缘关系较远;(2)在近缘种的分化中,染色体结构异染色质的变化和臂间倒位是重要的因素之一,这在小型染色体上表现得尤为突出;(三)四川湍蛙具有在形态上分化很明显的性染色体。C带分析表明,此性染色体主要由常染色质构成,但在其Y染色体的长臂上存在明显的中间C带,推测尚处于性染色体分化的初期阶段。 相似文献

We have quantitatively documented the development of sex differences in the behavior of juvenile Japanese macaques (1 to 2
years of age). Mothers treated their offspring differently by sex, i.e., mothers of males broke contact with them more frequently
than did mothers of females. Juvenile males played more, and mounted other macaques more frequently; juvenile females groomed
their mothers more and were also punished by other group members more frequently than were males. Males showed a pattern of

Summary First generation tetraploids were produced by hydrostatic pressure treatment before the first cleavage and raised until the adult stage. Their survival and growth were severely depressed when compared to the diploid control: after two years, no ovulated females were found although males produced sperm at 1 and 2 years of age and were mated individually with diploid females. The progenies were consistently normal with high survival rates. They were found to be almost all triploids by karyology, which failed to detect a significant rate of aneuploidies. However, the fertilizing ability of tetraploid males was always low (0 to 97% of the control; average 40%). Several arguments presented here support the hypothesis that diploid spermatozoas, which are wider than haploid ones, would be frequently blocked during their penetration through the micropyle canal. Second generation tetraploids were produced after such matings by heat shocks, causing the retention of the second polar body. Their survival and growth were much more satisfactory than in the first generation, although still lower than in diploid and triploid controls issuing from diploid parents. Performances of second generation triploids were comparable to those of diploids, and slightly better than those of conventional triploids issuing from diploid parents. 94.5% of the second generation tetraploids were male. 相似文献

Summary We have studied the course of the operculum line in the larval hypoderm of several bithorax complex mutants of Drosophila melanogaster. The bifurcation of the line, a characteristic of the first abdominal segment in wild-type (A1), can also appear in the metathoracic (T3) and other abdominal segments (A2, A3) depending on mutations within the bithorax complex. Therefore, we concluded that the course of the operculum line and thus the shape of the operculum is not determined by a suprasegmental gradient of positional information but by the functional state of the genes of the bithorax complex in each metamere. The dorsal and ventral branches of the operculum line react differently, the dorsal branch being more sensitive to the effect of loss of function mutations (bxd, iab-2
k), the ventral branch more affected by gain of function mutations (Hab). In some cases the effects of the mutations on the operculum line differed from those in the adult, suggesting a difference in sensitivity of larval hypodermal cells and histoblast cells to the functional gene products of the bithorax complex. 相似文献
