Behaviors associated with spawning by the halfmoon grouper, Epinephelus rivulatus, at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, are described from in situ observations made each evening throughout most of a lunar cycle. Spawning occurred after sunset on six consecutive evenings during the full moon period. During this time males were particularly aggressive toward one another and maintained high levels of activity among the gravid females that rested within each of their territories. Spawning occurred when a male swam alongside a responsive female and the pair rose in a tight spiral 1–1.5 m into the water column before releasing gametes and returning to the seabed. Spawning activity was followed by a longer nonspawning period (ca. 20 days), when fewer intraspecific interactions were observed and gamete reserves were replenished. Histological and behavioral evidence suggests that this cycle of spawning and replenishment may occur on a monthly basis. Although individual fish, particularly females, moved into certain areas to spawn, E. rivulatus did not form spawning aggregations as do larger species of grouper.  相似文献

The commercial comber Serranus cabrilla is widely distributed in the Atlanto‐Mediterranean region, inhabiting a great variety of habitats and depths. We developed primers for 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci to analyse the genetic structure between comber populations and between their colour morphs in order to establish correct fisheries management. Characterization of 25 individuals from Columbretes Islands (Spain) showed an average large number of alleles (9.5 ± 1.3) and observed heterozygosity (0.657 ± 0.06). Only two loci showed significant departure from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. We found no evidence of linkage disequilibrium between pairs of loci. We rejected for primer design one clone with a microsatellite within the transposable element TX_FR2.  相似文献

Pearsonellum pygmaeus n. sp. is described from Cromileptes altivelis (Serranidae), the Barramundi Cod, from Heron Island (southern Great Barrier Reef) and Lizard Island (northern Great Barrier Reef). This new species differs from Pearsonellum corventum (type and only species) in the combination of smaller overall body size, the relative distance of the brain from the anterior end, the relative lengths of both the oesophagus and the testis, the degree to which the testis extends outside the intercaecal field, the shape of the testis, the shape and size of the ovary and the extent to which the uterus loops around the ovary. There are in addition, 20 base pair differences between the ITS2 rDNA sequence of P. pygmaeus n. sp. and that of P. corventum. Three new host records for P. corventum are reported. Adelomyllos teenae n. g., n. sp. is described from Epinephelus coioides (Serranidae), the Estuary Cod, from Moreton Bay, southeast Queensland. The new genus differs from the 22 other sanguinicolid genera in the combined possession of two testes, a cirrus-sac, separate genital pores, a post-ovarian uterus and an H-shaped intestine. A. teenae n. sp. is the third sanguinicolid described from the Epinephelinae. Sanguinicolids have now been reported from 11 species of Serranidae.  相似文献

Predicting patterns of prey use from morphology of fishes   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Synopsis Ecomorphological analyses that search for patterns of association between morphological and prey-use data sets will have a greater chance of understanding the causal relationships between form and diet if the morphological variables used have known consequences for feeding performance. We explore the utility of fish body size, mouth gape and jaw-lever mechanics in predicting patterns of prey use in two very different communities of fishes, Caribbean coral reef fishes, and species of the Centrarchidae that live in Lake Opinicon, Ontario. In spite of major differences in the spectrum of potential prey available, the centrarchids of Lake Opinicon show dietary transitions during ontogeny that are very similar to those seen among and within species of Caribbean groupers (Serranidae). The transition from small zooplankton to intermediate sized invertebrates and ultimately to fishes appears to be very general in ram-suction feeding fishes and is probably driven largely by the constraints of mouth size on prey capture ability. The jaw-lever systems for mouth opening and closing represent direct trade-offs for speed and force of jaw movement. The ratio of in-lever to out-lever in the opening system changes during ontogeny in bluegill, indicating that the mechanics and kinematics of jaw movement may change as well. Among 34 species of Caribbean reef fishes, biting species had jaw-closing ratios that favored force translation, while species that employ rapid-strike ram-suction had closing ratios that enhanced speed of closing and mouth opening ratios that favored a more rapid expansion of the mouth during the strike. We suggest that when prey are categorized into functional groups, reflecting the specific performance features that are important in capturing and handling them, and the differences among habitats in the available prey resource are taken into account, general patterns can be found in morphology-diet relations that cross phylogenetic boundaries.  相似文献

Anatomical changes to the gonad during sex change in the protogynous grouper Epinephelus rivulatus are described from histological observations. A decrease in ovarian mass occurred soon after the onset of sex change as oocytes atrophied and were removed from the gonad. Blood supply and abundance of unidentified somatic cells increased at this time as proliferation of sperm tissue commenced. As the gonad was cleared of ovarian tissue, the rate of spermatogenesis increased and the lamellae soon became dominated by sperm and connective tissue. Putative Leydig cells, the probable sites of male steroid production, appeared in transitional gonads and were most abundant in the testes of immature males. Peripheral sperm sinuses subsequently formed within basal tissue layers of the tunica and expanded as they filled with spermatids. The process of sex change, occurring as a result of experimental manipulation of wild populations at the start of the spawning season, took c. 3 weeks. This appears rapid compared to other hermaphroditic species and may reduce the impacts of fishing on reproductive output by E. rivulatus populations.  相似文献

Rabaulichthys suzukii is described as a new species of anthiine fish, family Serranidae, from three specimens collected in 5–15 m off the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan in February 1999 and February 2000. It represents the third species of the genus, the most characteristic feature of which is the very high dorsal fin of the male. R. suzukii is most closely related to R. altipinnis Allen from New Britain, differing in its larger size (to 64.2 mm SL, compared to 45.5 mm for R. altipinnis), higher dorsal fin (29.3% SL, compared to 26.2% for R. altipinnis), lack of a filament on the caudal-fin lobes, 19 pectoral rays (modally 20 in R. altipinnis), 9–10 + 23 gill rakers (8–9 + 21–22 in R. altipinnis), and in color. Because the Izu Peninsula collection sites have been heavily dived for many years, the recent appearance of R. suzukii is believed to the result of transport of postlarvae from a population to the south. Aim To create a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for the closely related serranid genera Alphestes Bloch and Schneider and Dermatolepis Gill and assess the role of the Panamanian Isthmus in speciation within these reef fishes. Location Tropical eastern Pacific, Caribbean, and Indian Oceans. Methods Sequence data from one nuclear (TMO‐4C4) and three mitochondrial genes (16S, 12S, and cytochrome b) were used in maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses. Results Here we show that previously hypothesized trans‐isthmian geminate species are not each other's closest living relatives. Species of Alphestes Bloch and Schneider in the eastern Pacific are sister taxa indicating post‐closure speciation. Within Dermatolepis Gill, we identify a sister group relationship between the Caribbean and western Indian Ocean species, a rarely reported biogeographic pattern. Based on sequence divergence, speciation among the three species of Dermatolepis was, however, nearly simultaneous around the time of the isthmian closure event. Main conclusions Our molecular phylogenetic analysis of two closely related genera of reef fishes, each with presumed trans‐isthmian geminates, cautions against the uncritical use of morphological similarity in identification of geminates, as well as the assumption that trans‐isthmian sister groups date to the isthmian closure event. These findings suggest that in some instances incomplete sampling of species within a clade including putative geminates may lead to improper conclusions regarding the pattern and timing of speciation, as well as incorrect estimation of the rate at which evolution has proceeded.  相似文献

Kelp bass, Paralabrax clathratus, is an important sport fishery of California, USA and Baja, Mexico. Here we describe eight microsatellite loci developed for this species. Two loci were derived from known primers for other species in the family, Serranidae and six were developed anew using a clone enrichment protocol. Loci were arranged into three multiplex PCR (polymerase chain reaction) sets for fast throughput; 564 individuals from nine populations across the species’ range were genotyped. Polymorphism ranged from four to 47 alleles and all populations at all loci displayed Hardy–Weinberg and linkage equilibrium.  相似文献

Species in the genus Hypoplectrus (hamlet fish) have been recognized primarily on the basis of colour morphology, which varies substantially. Limited differentiation in other morphological characters, however, has led to ongoing debate about their taxonomy. Our analysis of mtDNA sequences demonstrates neither reciprocal monophyly nor significant genetic differentiation among hamlet colour morphs. These data are potentially consistent with a model of recent speciation due to sexual selection on colour morphology. The presence within hamlets of two divergent mtDNA clades, however, suggests a longer history during which hybridization and gene flow have prevented the differentiation of hamlet colour morphs, at least in neutral genetic markers.  相似文献
