A reduced probability of finding mates at low densities is a frequently hypothesized mechanism for a component Allee effect. At low densities dispersers are less likely to find mates and establish new breeding units. However, many mathematical models for an Allee effect do not make a distinction between breeding group establishment and subsequent population growth. Our objective is to derive a spatially explicit mathematical model, where dispersers have a reduced probability of finding mates at low densities, and parameterize the model for wolf recolonization in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). In this model, only the probability of establishing new breeding units is influenced by the reduced probability of finding mates at low densities. We analytically and numerically solve the model to determine the effect of a decreased probability in finding mates at low densities on population spread rate and density. Our results suggest that a reduced probability of finding mates at low densities may slow recolonization rate. 相似文献

Based on a population genetic model of mixed strategies determined by alleles of small effect, we derive conditions for the evolution of social learning in an infinite-state environment that changes periodically over time. Each mixed strategy is defined by the probabilities that an organism will commit itself to individual learning, social learning, or innate behavior. We identify the convergent stable strategies (CSS) by a numerical adaptive dynamics method and then check the evolutionary stability (ESS) of these strategies. A strategy that is simultaneously a CSS and an ESS is called an attractive ESS (AESS). For certain parameter sets, a bifurcation diagram shows that the pure individual learning strategy is the unique AESS for short periods of environmental change, a mixed learning strategy is the unique AESS for intermediate periods, and a mixed learning strategy (with a relatively large social learning component) and the pure innate strategy are both AESS's for long periods. This result entails that, once social learning emerges during a transient era of intermediate environmental periodicity, a subsequent elongation of the period may result in the intensification of social learning, rather than a return to innate behavior. 相似文献

The exposure of CHO DG44 cells to an osmotic shock, after DNA uptake, results in a cellular volume decrease of approx. 55%. Repetitive osmotic shocks targeted different sub-populations of cells as was demonstrated using two different fluorescent reporter genes. Also the exposure of a calcium phosphate–DNA coprecipitate to high osmolarity in vitro caused the release of the DNA from the precipitate. The results demonstrate the importance of the osmotic shock on the efficient delivery of plasmid DNA to the nucleus of CHO cells following calcium phosphate-mediated transfection. 相似文献

X-ray crystallographic analysis of Na5[Mn(l-tart)2] · 12H2O demonstrated that Mn(III) ion has two tridentate l-tartrates of which two deprotonated hydroxo groups and one carboxylate are coordinated in contrast to the previously proposed structure with two didentate tartrates and two coordinated water. The tetragonally distorted octahedron due to the Jahn-Teller effect was discussed in relation with the large splitting components for the UV-Vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectra in the d-d transition in the solid. The significant difference in the UV-Vis and CD spectra between the solid and the solution suggests that the tridentate coordination of the tartrate in the solid complex changes to the didentate one in the solution. 相似文献

A general method for constructing low-rank tensor product smooths for use as components of generalized additive models or generalized additive mixed models is presented. A penalized regression approach is adopted in which tensor product smooths of several variables are constructed from smooths of each variable separately, these "marginal" smooths being represented using a low-rank basis with an associated quadratic wiggliness penalty. The smooths offer several advantages: (i) they have one wiggliness penalty per covariate and are hence invariant to linear rescaling of covariates, making them useful when there is no "natural" way to scale covariates relative to each other; (ii) they have a useful tuneable range of smoothness, unlike single-penalty tensor product smooths that are scale invariant; (iii) the relatively low rank of the smooths means that they are computationally efficient; (iv) the penalties on the smooths are easily interpretable in terms of function shape; (v) the smooths can be generated completely automatically from any marginal smoothing bases and associated quadratic penalties, giving the modeler considerable flexibility to choose the basis penalty combination most appropriate to each modeling task; and (vi) the smooths can easily be written as components of a standard linear or generalized linear mixed model, allowing them to be used as components of the rich family of such models implemented in standard software, and to take advantage of the efficient and stable computational methods that have been developed for such models. A new derivative of racemic gossypol with 2-thiophenecarbohydrazide (GHHT) and its complexes with monovalent cations have been synthesized and studied by electrospray ionization-mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), as well as by the Parametric Method 5 (PM5) methods. It is demonstrated that GHHT forms stable complexes of 1:1 stoichiometry with monovalent metal cations. The structures of the complexes are stabilized by three types of intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The spectroscopic methods have provided clear evidence that GHHT and its complexes exist in the DMSO-d6 solution in the N-imine-N-imine tautomeric forms. The structures of the GHHT and its complexes with Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+ cations are visualized and discussed in detail. 相似文献

and needs to be clarified. Their results actually show there is a pleiotropic effect associated with the mutation ALDH2( 487Lys allele that is as deleterious as the risk of alcoholism for which it offers protection, and thus there is no net benefit
from having the mutation. A clarification is needed because this statement and others in the paper might be used inappropriately
as an endorsement of practices that are in fact worthless, because it masks the need to find what the pleiotropic effect is,

Circular dichroism (CD) and NMR spectroscopy were used to study the conformational properties of two synthetic peptides, D82-R101 and D82-I109, encompassing the caveolin scaffolding domain (D82-R101), in the presence of dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles. Our data show that a stable helical conformation of the caveolin scaffolding domain in a membrane mimicking system is only obtained for the peptide including the L102-I109 hydrophobic stretch, a part of the caveolin intra-membrane domain. Through chemical shift variations, an ensemble of six residues of the D82-L109 peptide, mainly located in the V(94)TKYWFYR(101) motif were found to detect the presence of phosphatidylserine solubilized in DPC micelles. Our results constitute a first step for elucidating at a residue level the conformational properties of the central region of the caveolin-1 protein. 相似文献

Slipped frameshift intermediates can occur when DNA polymerase slows or stalls at sites of DNA lesions. However, this phenomenon is much less common when unmodified DNA is replicated. In order to study the effect of templating bases on the alignment of primer-templates, NMR structural investigation has been performed on primer-template oligonucleotide models which mimic the situation that dNTP has just been incorporated opposite template. NMR evidence reveals the occurrence of misalignment when dGTP is incorporated opposite template T with a downstream nucleotide C.
