Tree squirrels (Tamiasciurus) are important selective agents on conifer reproductive strategies (Smith 1970, 1975). Although this is well established for wind-dispersed pines, the impact of tree squirrels on bird-dispersed pines has been largely ignored. I assessed the impact of tree squirrels on the allocation of reproductive energy in the bird-dispersed limber pine (Pinus flexilis) by comparing its cone and seed traits from three sites in the Rocky Mountains where tree squirrels (Tamiasciurus) are present to those from three mountain ranges in the Great Basin where tree squirrels are absent. As predicted, differences between the two regions in individual cone and seed traits are consistent with the hypothesis that tree squirrels are important selective agents on these traits. In the absence of tree squirrels, limber pine allocates more than twice as much energy to kernel compared with that invested in putative seed defenses (cone, resin, and seed coat) as does limber pine where tree squirrels are present. Such a large difference is particularly striking, because tree squirrels may have become extinct in the Great Basin in only the last 12,000 yr. Although many factors influence the allocation of energy to cones and seeds, no single factor other than the presence of tree squirrels is compatible with the large and consistent differences between limber pine in the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin. These results show that tree squirrels are an important constraint on the evolution of cone and seed traits that promote the dispersal of seeds by birds.  相似文献

A population of cyclomorphic Bosmina coregoni was studied in Lake Östersjön, southwestern Sweden and results from field samples collected in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 are presented. Animals collected in summer have remarkably higher carapace and prolonged antennule compared to what we call the normal morph. In 1991 the extreme morph reach its maximum body length, body height and antennule length in July to September. The occurrence of the extreme morph coincide with the hatching of the predaceous cladoceran Leptodora kindtii. The two morphs fluctuate in abundance and in relation to each other. In early spring only the normal morph occurred in the samples followed by a period of about two months when the two morphs were found together, in July only the extreme morph was found. In September the two morphs were again present in the lake. As has been shown for other cladoceran, the conspicuous carapace and antennule could be an adaptive response that decreases mortality due to invertebrate predation. Spectacular features like these are likely also accompanied by some sort of costs.  相似文献

In order to study the physiological role of aminopeptidase A (APA),several -mercapto--amino acyl dipeptides were synthesized toobtain compounds having a high affinity for APA and a high selectivityversus aminopeptidase N (APN). Sulfonamide and carboxylate moieties whichhave been shown to be recognized by the S1 subsite of theenzyme were introduced on the side chain of the -mercapto--aminoacyl sub-unit, the latter being coupled to dipeptides optimized to interactwith the S1 andS2 subsites by means of combinatorialchemistry. Good affinities (16 nM) were obtained, the selectivity factorsbeing up to 160-fold versus APN.  相似文献

Size, age and number of offspring at the first and subsequent tworeproductions were compared in Daphnia treated with cues frominvertebrate predators (adult Cyclopoida fed Daphnia)and from crushed conspecifics. Daphnia in the presence ofinvertebrate predators had earlier maturation, greater size atfirst and subsequent reproductions and a larger number of offspringthan control animals, while the opposite (later maturation andsmaller size at subsequent reproductions) happened when Daphnia were treated with homogenate from crushedconspecifics.  相似文献

1.  Aplysia californica incorporates toxins and pigments from its red seaweed diet into its body and ink, purportedly as a defense against predation. We tested ink's potential defensive function by assessing the survival of green seaweed-fed (red algal toxin deprived) snails in encounters with a natural predator, the sea anemone Anthopleura xanthogrammica.
2.  Red seaweed-fed Aplysia secreted copious amounts of ink when ensnared in anemone tentacles. A similar amount of ink applied to inkless (green-fed) snails as they were engulfed by an anemone enhanced their survival [71% survived (ink) vs 7% (seawater control)]. Ink caused anemones to reject whitefish (a familiar food) [50% rejected (ink) vs 10% (seawater control)], triggering gastrovascular eversions, which ejected ink as well as prey from their digestive cavities. Snails with only a passive chemical defense (algal toxins, no ink) escaped less often than snails with only an active chemical defense (ink, no red algal toxins) (20% survived vs 71%) and about as often as red algal toxin deprived snails (20% vs 12%). Snails avoided ink by chemical orientation, thus avoiding potential sites of ongoing predation.
3.  The survival value of ink and the snail's aversion to it supports ink's proposed anti-predator function.

Experiments were performed to test the acceptability of two palatable, cryptic caterpillars, the tobacco hornworm,Manduca sexta, and the cabbage looper,Trichoplusia ni, reared on different diets, to the Argentine ant,Iridomyrmex humilis. Ants preferred larvae reared on artificial diet, groundcherry, or cowpea to tobacco-reared larvae. Ants also preferred larvae reared on artificial diet without nicotine to larvae reared on diet containing nicotine (5% dry wt). Experiments were also performed to test the response of ants to larval extracts and chemicals applied to the surface of palatable prey. Ants did not respond differently to larvae of the potato tuber moth,Phthorimaea operculella, treated with larval extracts or regurgitate from tobacco-reared larvae compared to artificialdiet-reared larvae, but ants were deterred byP. operculella larvae treated with nicotine compared to untreated larvae. The results of this study indicate that caterpillars can derive at least some degree of chemical protection from their food plant without sequestering and storing plant compounds and without the development of elaborate aposematic characteristics.  相似文献

Summary New H2O-selective homonuclear and heteronuclear 2D NMR experiments have been designed for the observation of protein hydration (PHOGSY, Protein Hydration Observed by Gradient Spectroscop Y). These experiments utilize selective excitation of the H2O resonance and pulsed field gradients for coherence selection and efficient H2O suppression. The method allows for a rapid and sensitive detection of H2O molecules in labelled and unlabelled proteins. In addition it opens a way to measure the residence time of water bound to proteins. Its application to uniformly 15N-labelled FKBP-12 (FK-506 binding protein) is demonstrated.  相似文献

Summary Radiation damping is a phenomenon well known among NMR spectroscopists of proteins as a source of undesirable features, especially in high-field and high-Q probe NMR. In this paper, we present an electronic neutralization network which dramatically reduces radiation damping. It detects the radiation field profile and feeds back into the probe an rf field with identical amplitude and opposite phase. Experimental results of a practical implementation carried out on a 400 MHz Bruker spectrometer are shown.  相似文献

Female transfer in primates   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Intergroup transfer by males is nearly universal among social primates. Furthermore, among the most frequently studied monkeys-savanna baboons and Japanese and rhesus macaques—females typically remain in their natal groups, so troops are composed of related matrilines. These facts strongly support two major theories: (l) that kin selection is a powerful force in patterning sociality (if one is to live in a group, one should prefer a group of one’s relatives); and (2) that the ultimate explanation for intergroup transfer is the avoidance of inbreeding depression (though both sexes would prefer to live with kin, one sex has to disperse to avoid inbreeding and for a variety of reasons the losing sex is generally male). Substantial rates of transfer by females in social species with routine male transfer would cast doubt on both ideas. In fact, evidence reviewed here indicates that female transfer is not unusual and among folivorous primates (e.g., Alouatta, the Colobinae) it seems to be routine. In addition to casting doubt on the demographic significance of inbreeding avoidance and favoring mutualistic and/or game theory interpretations of behavior over nepotistic ones, this finding supports the hypothesis that predator detection is the primary selective pressure favoring sociality for many primates. Finally, while female bonding [sensuWrangham, R. W. (1980), Behaviour75:262–299] among primates appears to be less common than generally believed, the observed correlation between female transfer and morphological adaptations to folivory provides empirical support for Wrangham’s model for the evolution of female-bonded groups.  相似文献
