Studies of the distribution of scleractinian coral recruits within stacks of settlement plates at Orpheus Island and Lizard Island revealed that corals are recruited almost exclusively on the lower surfaces of the settlement plates. The absence of recruitment on the upper surfaces of the plates is attributed to the observed high levels of sediment on these surfaces. All hermatypic coral spat were found near the edge of the settlement plates, whereas ahermatypic corals were located towards the center. Growth and survivorship of hermatypic corals were dependent on the position of attachment, decreasing with distance from the edges of the plates. Survivorship of ahermatypic corals was uniformly high. Light levels on the lower surfaces of the plates within the stacks were shown to decay asymptotically as a function of distance from the plate edge. There was a highly significant non-linear relationship between relative light intensity on the settlement plates and the positions of coral spat. In the absence of evidence for selective hydrodynamic deposition of spat, these results suggest that light intensity is the most important factor in determining the position of attachment of coral spat on the underside of these plates.  相似文献

Abstract. Post-fire seed germination, seedling mortality and seed banks were investigated in scrub-heath (kwongan) in SW Australia. Study species included herbaceous and woody, obligate seeders and resprouters in two non-bradysporous but significant plant families (Restionaceae and Epacridaceae). In all species, seedlings were recruited only in the first autumn-spring after fire and occurred in similar densities as the estimated germinable annual seed input. Seedlings were absent from unburnt vegetation. Although most species retained some residual seeds after fire, tests (excised embryo culture) indicated that a negligible number of seeds were germinable. Regardless of fire response or species, there appeared to be a large loss of seeds each year and in most cases, only a small proportion of the annual seed production was used in post-fire recovery of plants. Based on seedling: parent ratios, all species had the capacity to reconstitute parent densities from germinants in the first year after fire, but high seedling mortality and no further recruitment resulted in less seedlings than replacements for four resprouter Restionaceae and three Epacridaceae (all obligate seeders) at the end of the third year after fire.  相似文献

Many animals, including humans, organize their foraging activity along well-defined trails. Because trails are cleared of obstacles, they minimize energy expenditure and allow fast travel. In social insects such as ants, trails might also promote social contacts and allow the exchange of information between workers about the characteristics of the food. When the trail traffic is heavy, however, traffic congestion occurs and the benefits of increased social contacts for the colony can be offset by a decrease of the locomotory rate of individuals. Using a small laboratory colony of the leaf-cutting ant Atta colombica cutting a mix of leaves and Parafilm, we compared how foraging changed when the width of the bridge between the nest and their foraging area changed. We found that the rate of ants crossing a 5 cm wide bridge was more than twice as great as the rate crossing a 0.5 cm bridge, but the rate of foragers returning with loads was less than half as great. Thus, with the wide bridge, the ants had about six times lower efficiency (loads returned per forager crossing the bridge). We conclude that crowding actually increased foraging efficiency, possibly because of increased communication between laden foragers returning to the nest and out-going ants. 1. Leakage of fertilizers from farmland has affected levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in many coastal areas, reducing limitation of primary productivity with consequences for timing and magnitude of the annual peak in phytoplankton and zooplankton. Such changes in nutrient availability may have affected temporal patterns of abundance of marine invertebrates and vertebrates that are the main prey of seabirds. 2. We investigated the extent to which changes in the use of fertilizers by farmers affected timing of breeding, clutch size, recruitment and longevity of a coastal seabird, the Arctic tern Sterna paradisaea Pont., in Denmark. 3. Timing of breeding advanced with the increase in use of fertilizers, with an effect as a consequence of a phenotypic response of individuals exposed to different levels of fertilizers. 4. Annual mean clutch size increased with the amount of fertilizer. While individual Arctic terns increased their clutch size with fertilizer level, there was no evidence of individual Arctic terns in different years changing their clutch size in response to changes in fertilizer use. 5. Annual recruitment rate, estimated as the proportion of young that were subsequently recovered as adults, was related to fertilizer use. 6. Mean longevity, estimated as the maximum age of adult individuals, decreased in response to fertilizer use. 7. These findings provide evidence of fertilizer use in agriculture having significant indirect effects on timing of reproduction, clutch size, recruitment and longevity of a seabird.  相似文献

1. Using data from 327 nests over a consecutive 8-year period we examined age-specific variation in reproduction in a population of stitchbirds (or hihi) Notiomystis cincta and related how differences in reproductive performance were linked to the timing of territory establishment and breeding. 2. Across the population all reproductive parameters showed a quadratic relationship with an increase mainly between the first and second breeding season and a decline after the fourth year. A longitudinal analysis showed evidence of senescence by the sixth year in the numbers of chicks fledged and recruited. 3. Reproductive increases between years 1 and 2 were the result of poor-quality females dying after their first breeding season (differential selection hypothesis) in combination with surviving females showing improvements in reproduction in their second year (individual improvement/constraint hypothesis). 4. There was no effect of mate experience or territory quality on improvements in breeding between years. 5. The key variable influencing reproductive output was the timing of breeding. Birds that started laying earlier were more likely to lay multiple clutches in any given season. This was the main difference between first-year and older birds; generally first-year birds initiated egg laying later and consequently laid fewer clutches. 6. Approximately half of all first-year birds did not establish their territory until after the breeding season had begun. This delay in territory establishment resulted in these birds delaying breeding, which resulted in them having a lower reproductive output relative to all other birds. First-year birds that managed to establish their territory before breeding commenced, had similar rates of reproduction as older birds. 7. There was a positive relationship between the timing of territory establishment during a female's first year and her hatching date in the previous breeding season. We hypothesize that this was because late-hatched females were less able to effectively compete for territories against earlier-hatched members of their cohort, and this delayed their establishment and breeding in their first year. Thus, this social constraint is likely to be a major factor driving age-specific reproductive variation in this population.  相似文献

The crustacean isopod Armadillidium vulgare is characterized by an unusual ∼42-kb-long mitochondrial genome consisting of two molecules co-occurring in mitochondria: a circular ∼28-kb dimer formed by two ∼14-kb monomers fused in opposite polarities and a linear ∼14-kb monomer. Here we determined the nucleotide sequence of the fundamental monomeric unit of A. vulgare mitochondrial genome, to gain new insight into its structure and evolution. Our results suggest that the junction zone between monomers of the dimer structure is located in or near the control region. Direct sequencing indicated that the nucleotide sequences of the different monomer units are virtually identical. This suggests that gene conversion and/or replication processes play an important role in shaping nucleotide sequence variation in this mitochondrial genome. The only heteroplasmic site we identified predicts an alloacceptor tRNA change from tRNAAla to tRNAVal. Therefore, in A. vulgare, tRNAAla and tRNAVal are found at the same locus in different monomers, ensuring that both tRNAs are present in mitochondria. The presence of this heteroplasmic site in all sequenced individuals suggests that the polymorphism is selectively maintained, probably because of the necessity of both tRNAs for maintaining proper mitochondrial functions. Thus, our results provide empirical evidence for the tRNA gene recruitment model of tRNA evolution. Moreover, interspecific comparisons showed that the A. vulgare mitochondrial gene order is highly derived compared to the putative ancestral arthropod type. By contrast, an overall high conservation of mitochondrial gene order is observed within crustacean isopods.  相似文献

After a single dose of an anticancer agent, changes due to cell death are expected to occur in the distribution of cells between proliferating and quiescent compartment as well as in the oxygenation and nutritional state of surviving cells. These changes are transient because tumour regrowth tends to restore the pretreatment status. The reoxygenation due to the decrease of oxygen consumption is expected to induce cell recruitment from quiescence into proliferation, and consequently to increase the sensitivity of the cell population to a successive treatment by a cycle-specific drug. In previous papers we proposed a model of the response of tumour cords (cylindrical arrangements of tumour cells growing around a blood vessel of the tumour) to single-dose treatments. The model included the motion of cells and oxygen diffusion and consumption. On the basis of that model suitably extended to better account for the action of anticancer drugs, we study the time course of the oxygenation and of the redistribution of cells between the proliferating and quiescent compartments. By means of simulations of the response to a dose delivered as two spaced equal fractions, we investigate the dependence of tumour response on the spacing between the fractions and on the main parameters of the system. A time window may be found in which the delivery of two fractions is more effective than the delivery of the undivided dose.  相似文献

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a fatal, adult-onset neurodegenerative disorder that has no cure and very limited treatment options. MSA is characterized by deposition of fibrillar α-synuclein (α-syn) in glial cytoplasmic inclusions in oligodendrocytes. Similar to other synucleinopathies, α-syn self-assembly is thought to be a key pathologic event and a prominent target for disease modification in MSA. Molecular tweezers are broad-spectrum nanochaperones that prevent formation of toxic protein assemblies and enhance their clearance. The current lead compound, CLR01, has been shown to inhibit α-syn aggregation but has not yet been tested in the context of MSA. To fill this gap, here, we conducted a proof-of-concept study to assess the efficacy of CLR01 in remodeling MSA-like α-syn pathology in the PLP-α-syn mouse model of MSA. Six-month-old mice received intracerebroventricular CLR01 (0.3 or 1 mg/kg per day) or vehicle for 32 days. Open-field test revealed a significant, dose-dependent amelioration of an anxiety-like phenotype. Subsequently, immunohistochemical and biochemical analyses showed dose-dependent reduction of pathological and seeding-competent forms of α-syn, which correlated with the behavioral phenotype. CLR01 treatment also promoted dopaminergic neuron survival in the substantia nigra. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of an agent that reduces formation of putative high-molecular-weight oligomers and seeding-competent α-syn in a mouse model of MSA, supporting the view that these species are key to the neurodegenerative process and its cell-to-cell progression in MSA. Our study suggests that CLR01 is an attractive therapeutic candidate for disease modification in MSA and related synucleinopathies, supporting further preclinical development.  相似文献

Temperate estuaries are indispensable as refuelling areas for long-distance shorebirds, where they depend on intertidal benthic fauna, such as bivalves, as food source. Bivalve recruitment is thought to be, at least partly, top-down regulated by epibenthic predators (the shrimp Crangon crangon and the crab Carcinus maenas) but this interaction is part of a complex predator–prey system since various fish species prey upon the crustaceans.  相似文献
