Frequency-dependent seed predation (FDP) has been shown to be a powerful coexistence mechanism in models of annual plant communities. However, FDP undermines the competition-based coexistence mechanism called the storage effect (SEc), which relies on temporal environmental fluctuations that drive fluctuations in competition. Although environmental fluctuations also drive fluctuations in predation, a storage effect due to predation (SEp) may not arise due to a time lag between a change in the environment and the resulting change in the predation rate. Here we show how SEp can arise with multispecies FDP, and in a two-species setting with density-dependent frequency-dependence, partially compensating for the reduction in SEc, in the presence of predation. These outcomes occur when predatory behavior is flexible, and can accommodate to changes in prey abundances on a within-year time scale, leading to changes in predator preferences in response to prey abundances in a given year. When predator preferences are determined by average prey abundances over several years, FDP is still a strong coexistence mechanism but undermines SEc without creating SEp. 相似文献

We examined the response of seeds to heat in four geographically restricted and one widespread species of shrubby Darwinia from the fire-prone region of southeastern Australia. These shrubs are killed by fire and rely on seed germination after
a fire to maintain populations. We replicated the germination trials across several sites and several fruiting seasons for
most species. Seeds had a high level of viability and were largely dispersed in a dormant state, except in D. glaucophylla, where seed dormancy varied significantly across fruiting seasons. The indehiscent fruit of all species readily imbibes moisture
when wet and seeds are not considered to be ‘hard-seeded’. All species had increased seed germination in response to a limited
range of heating temperatures (generally 80–100°C). Higher temperatures killed increasing proportions of seeds. This pattern
was broadly consistent across species, population and seasons, although the proportion of seeds whose germination was promoted
by heat varied from high (D. diminuta, D. fascicularis, D. glaucophylla) to moderate (D. biflora, D. procera). Our work highlights the importance of heat as a mechanism for influencing germination in species that are not hard-seeded.
Consequently, soil temperatures during a fire should strongly influence post-fire germination levels in Darwinia. The roles of other cues that promote germination, i.e. smoke, seasonal temperatures and their interactions with heat, remain

The local tissue-specific renin-angiotensin system (RAS) was identified. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of local bone RAS in the osteoporosis of aging mice. Twelve-month-old and two-month-old male mice were respectively assigned to the ageing and young groups. The tibias and femurs were collected for an analysis of histomorphology, bone mass, and gene and protein expression. H&E staining and micro-CT measurement showed a loss of the trabecular bone network and decrease of bone mineral density in the proximal tibial metaphysis of the aged mice. The PCR results indicated the significant up-regulation of renin and angiotensinogen (AGT) mRNA expression in both the tibia and femur of the ageing mice. Western blotting data showed that the tibial angiotensin II protein expression was significantly increased in the ageing group. The enhancement of renin and AGT expression in the bone tissue resulted in the increased production of angiotensin II which plays an important role in the pathology of age-related osteoporosis. 相似文献

Oil content of Arabidopsis seeds: the influence of seed anatomy, light and plant-to-plant variation 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Arabidopsis thaliana is frequently used as a model for the study of oilseed biology and metabolism. However, the very small seeds of Arabidopsis can complicate analysis of their oil content and influence the application of results to larger-seeded plants. Here, we describe how seed anatomy, light, and plant-to-plant variation influence the content and measurement of oil in Arabidopsis seeds. The anatomy of Arabidopsis and Brassica napus seeds were compared and the distribution of mass, oil and the fatty acid composition of different seed parts were determined. In Brassica, 90% of the seed oil resides in the cotyledons that contribute 74% of seed mass. By contrast, the values for Arabidopsis are 60% and 45%, respectively, with a higher fraction of the oil deposited in the radicle, hypocotyl, endosperm and seed coat. Growth of Arabidopsis plants with 600 micromol m(-2) s(-1) light resulted in a two-fold higher seed yield, a 40% increase in mass per seed and a 60% increase in oil per seed compared to growth at 100 micromol m(-2) s(-1). Factors that influence the analysis of oil content were evaluated. Intact-seed transmethylation followed by gas chromatography (GC) analysis provided reproducible analysis of Arabidopsis seed oil. However, plant-to-plant variation in oil content is large and we analyzed how this influences the ability to detect statistically valid changes in oil between different genotypes. These observations establish a reference data set on the fatty acid composition and distribution of mass and oil between tissues of Arabidopsis seeds that should help to predict the applicability of results obtained with Arabidopsis to other oilseeds. 相似文献

Grand Rapids lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seeds were stored in an imbibed state for up to two years. Embryos dissected from stored seeds showed a progressive loss with time in their ability to germinate on polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions. Little germination of dissected embryos from one-month imbibed seeds occurred on-6 bar PEG but only after four months of storage did the dissected embryos fail to germinate on-4 bar PEG. After two years storage 30% of dissected embryos still were able to germinate on-2 bar PEG. This loss of germination potential, which may be a symptom of the development of an embryo dormancy, could be reversed by N6-benzyladenine (BA) and red light (R) applied together or separately to dissected embryos. Two weeks of chilling of 12-month imbibed seeds restored sensitivity to R and a 48-h BA pretreatment prior to R resulted in germination rates similar to those of seeds emerging from primary dormancy. There was loss of embryo control of endo--mannanase activity after two weeks of storage even though the endosperms themselves retained their capacity for enzyme synthesis for six more weeks. Eventually, then, endo--mannanase synthesis is not possible because of inherent changes in both the embryo and endosperm, although each tissue undergoes changes at its own rate. Oxygen uptake by embryos dissected from two-month imbibed seeds did not increase to the same extent as embryos dissected from freshly imbibed seeds. In intact seeds germinating from a skotodormant state, oxygen uptake increased at a time coincident with radicle protrusion, but did not achieve the levels of uptake of those seeds germinating from a primary dormant state. The decline in uptake of oxygen by secondary dormant seeds is the result of a lowered respiratory capability of the embryo itself, rather than of changes in permeability of the surrounding structures.Abbreviations BA

Indirect effects in a desert plant community: is competition among annuals more intense under shrub canopies? 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
An unresolved discussion in contemporary ecology deals with the relative importance of competition along environmental gradients. In deserts, local-scale differences in environmental productivity may be caused by the presence of shrubs, which represent a favorable habitat for annual populations within a nutrient-poor matrix. In this study, we attempted to test the hypothesis that facilitation of desert annuals by shrubs increase the intensity of competition among the annual plants. Such negative indirect effects have so far been ignored in studies about plant-plant interactions. We tested our hypothesis by measuring seedling survival and fecundity of four abundant annual plant species with and without neighbors in open areas and under shrub canopies in a sandy desert area. Our findings did not indicate indirect negative effects of shrubs on their understory annuals. Sensitivity to the presence of neighbors varied between species and surprisingly, the species with the smallest seeds was the only one which was not negatively affected by the presence of neighbors. In contrast to our hypothesis, there was no difference between the habitat types shrubs and openings in absolute and relative competition intensity. Our overall results suggest that negative indirect effects of shrubs are unimportant in determining demographic response of understory annual plants. 相似文献

Summary We experimentally examined factors limiting seed production in two populations of the perennial woodland herb Geranium maculatum in central Illinois, USA. To test the pollinator-limitation hypothesis, we compared the seed production of plants whose flowers were supplementarily pollinated with outcross pollen to that of control plants receiving natural pollination only. To test if fruit production by early flowers suppresses fruit and seed formation by late flowers, a third group of plants was prevented from producing seed from the first 50% of the flowers to open (stigmas were excised at flower opening). Finally, to test if seed maturation and flower initiation are correlated with photosynthetic capacity, we performed a defoliation experiment in which either the stem leaves within the inflorescence, the stem leaves below the inflorescence, or the rosette leaves were removed during late flowering. Plants that reccived supplemental pollination produced 1.5–1.6 times more seeds than control plants. We found no difference between hand-pollinated plants and controls in mortality, flowering frequency or number of flowers produced in the year following the experiment. In both control and hand-pollinated plants, the fruit set and total seed production of early flowers were more than twice as high as those of late flowers. In one of the two populations, plants whose early flowers were prevented from setting seed produced significantly more seeds from their late flowers than did control plants. Seed predation was low and did not differ between early and late flowers. Leaf removal did not affect seed number or size in the year of defoliation, nor did it reduce survival or flower production in the subsequent year. This suggests that the plants were able to compensate for a partial defoliation by using stored resources or by increasing photosynthetic rates in the remaining leaves. Taken together, the results demonstrate that both pollinator activity and resource levels influence patterns of seed production in G. maculatum. While seed production was pollinatorlimited in both populations, a seasonal decline in resource availability was apparently responsible for the low seed production by late flowers. 相似文献

Summary In a Danish heathland invasion of oak shrub has taken place, the succession rate being approximately 300 m during the last 100 years. The colonisation has occurred in steps related to the delay time between seedling stage and fertility stage. Seedlings are often found in clusters originating from caches probably made by seed-eating rodents. Apodemus sylvaticus, A. flavicollis and Clethrionomys glareoles. These rodents reached autumn densities of 25–50 individuals per ha. Radioactive acorns were scatterhoarded by the rodents, which mainly deposited the acorns singly up to at least 34 m from the oak shrub (mean 15.3±8.2 m), and preferably under Empetrum nigrum mats in the walls of runways Seedlings originating from radioactive acorns were found next summer at distances of 4–37 m from the oak shrub. In early summer caches containing new seedlings had a mean size of 2.0±2.2 acorns, range 1–16; mean distance of seedlings to nearest crown projection was 24.0±23.6 m, range 1–137.
