The aim of this study was to examine the effects of various biological factors such as body mass, trophic level, climate and geography on census area in terrestrial mammals. We also examine the effects of census area on the population density–body mass relationship. The geographic areas covered in this study include most major terrestrial biomes including taïga, desert, savanna, grassland, tropical dry forest, temperate dry forest, tropical rain forest and temperate rain forest. An extensive literature search was conducted and we compiled data on census area and body mass from 377 mammalian populations and 59 communities. Statistical analyses include linear regression, Kruskal–Wallis analysis of variance, LOWESS, and multiple regression. Overall, the regression between log census area (A) and log body mass (M) yielded a slope of 0.710, which did not differ significantly from 0.75, but it was significantly different from 1.0. The analyses also showed that the log A–log M relationship is constrained within a well‐defined space in a similar fashion to the home range–body mass relationship. When mammals were separated into trophic groups, regression lines differed significantly in their intercepts, but not in slopes. At the community level, the census area was particularly affected by the population with the largest body mass within the community. Both the number of species and number of taxa encompassed by the community were found to be correlated positively with log A (r = 0.26, P = 0.0464 and r = 0.27, P = 0.0398, respectively). Sampling of mammalian species is not usually random. Not only is census area significantly associated with the technique used to sample a given species, but it is also influenced by biological factors that have been shown previously to influence population density. Striking similarities were found between the census area–body mass relationship and the home range–body mass relationship, suggesting that investigators may sample mammalian populations over areas that actually reflect the use of space of their focal species. 相似文献

The reproductive status of female otters ( Lutra lutra ) was determined from an examination of 518 carcasses collected from Eastern Germany between 1950 and 2001. In Germany otters mate throughout the year. Significant seasonal differences are evident with a distinct peak in summer. Females were in breeding condition between the ages of three and 15 years, with the majority between six and nine years. The mean litter size at birth was 2.36, which was the lowest when compared with other inland populations. There were no significant differences in litter size for regions, seasons or age. Prenatal losses account for 26.31%. The mortality between birth and first appearance of cubs following their mother is about 29%. An effective reproduction rate of 78.4% was deduced from the known age structure of the sample and the proportion of breeding females. Reproductively active females show a significantly higher body condition than non-reproductive females. The fat body of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, serves as the major site for uric acid storage during metamorphosis. Light and electron microscopic examinations of fat body stained with reduced silver to show the location of stored uric acid have revealed that most, if not all, fat body cells store uric acid. The extent of specific staining is proportional to the increase in uric acid concentration in fat body during the initial stages of metamorphosis. Storage is associated with discrete membrane-bound structures, designated as uric acid storage vacuoles. In larval fat body, the structures are round or elliptical-shaped vacuoles with electron-dense fibrous interiors and are about the size of observed mitocondria (0.5–1.0 μm). During the larval-pupal transformation, the storage vacuoles double in size and appear as fibrous cores with spaces between the cores and the surrounding membranes. Before pupal ecdysis, the storage vacuoles are concentrated around the nucleus of each cell but after that event they are more uniformly distributed within fat body cells. 相似文献

Abstract: The effects of sibling egg cannibalism on sex-dependent development and adult body weight were determined by rearing simultaneously two groups of sibling larvae of ladybirds, viz. Propylea dissecta and Coccinella transversalis individually. The first group included cannibals (i.e. neonates, which took a sibling egg as the first meal and later fed on aphids, Aphis craccivora ) and the other included non-cannibals (reared exclusively on aphids). The cannibal larvae developed faster with heavier adults than non-cannibals. This expedited development and nutritional advantage (increased body weight) was greater in first instars indicating maximum benefit of sibling cannibalism to them. Sibling cannibalism was relatively more advantageous to male than to female ladybirds. Laboratory data predict that the larger size of adults in the field could possibly be the result of sibling egg cannibalism at the neonate level. 相似文献

Sexual dichromatism is common in lizards, and may play an important role in sex recognition and mating systems. Nonetheless, relatively few published papers provide quantitative analyses of colour, deal with Australian taxa or are based on large-bodied species. Water dragons Physignathus lesueurii (Agamidae) from eastern Australia are very large (upto 1 m total length) and sexually dichromatic, with conspicuous red ventral coloration in adult males. We quantified coloration in three ventral regions (throat, chest and abdomen) of males and females using a spectroradiometer and looked for associations of colour with sex and with morphological traits predicted to correlate with fitness (body size, body condition, relative head size and asymmetry of femoral pores). Among adult males, larger individuals showed less red on the abdomen than did smaller animals, and males with relatively large heads had darker, less red abdomens than did males with smaller heads. Among adult females, larger animals had darker chests, and less red on the abdomen and chest, than did smaller females. The similarity in these trends between the sexes, and the location of the sexually dichromatic and size-sensitive colours in an area (under the abdomen) where they presumably are not visible to other lizards cast doubt on their utility as sexual or dominance signals. Hence, although we documented significant sex and body-size effects on ventral coloration, our results suggest that ventral colours in water dragons do not function in sex-specific displays. 相似文献

Aim To describe broad‐scale geographical patterns of body size for European and North American amphibian faunas and to explore possible processes underlying these patterns. Specifically, we propose a heat balance hypothesis, as both heat conservation and heat gain determine the heat balance of ectotherms, and test it along with five other hypotheses that have a possible influence on body size gradients: size dependence, migration ability, primary productivity, seasonality and water availability. Location Western Europe and North America north of Mexico. Methods We processed distribution maps for native amphibian species to estimate the mean body size in 110 × 110 km cells and calculated eight environmental predictors to explore the relationship between environmental gradients and the observed patterns. We used least squares regression modelling and model selection approaches based on information theory to evaluate the relative support for each hypothesis. Results We found consistent body size gradients and similar relationships to environmental variables within each amphibian group in Europe and North America. Annual potential evapotranspiration, a measure of environmental energy, was the strongest predictor of mean body size in both regions. However, the contrasting responses to ambient energy in each group resulted in opposite geographical patterns, i.e. anurans increased in size from high‐ to low‐energy areas in both continents and urodeles showed the opposite pattern. Main conclusions Our results support the heat balance hypothesis, suggesting that the thermoregulatory abilities of anurans would allow them to reach larger sizes in colder climates by optimizing the trade‐off between heating and cooling rates, whereas a lack of such strategies among urodele faunas would explain why these organisms tend to be smaller in cooler areas. The amount of time taken to copulate varies enormously among mammals. Because copulation likely exposes animals to an increased risk of predation, and uses time and energy that could be spent on foraging, smaller mammals (which are vulnerable to more predators and have a shorter time-to-starvation than larger mammals) should spend less time copulating than do larger mammals. Furthermore, if extended copulation reflects competition among males, then the duration of mating (after correction for body size) should be greater in mammals in which females mate with more than one male. We tested these predictions using comparative data from 113 mammalian species in 85 genera, 40 families, and 14 orders, while controlling for the effect of phylogeny. We found: (1) the relationship between duration of copulation and body size to be negative, not positive; (2) no relationship with inferred multiple mating by females (based upon relative testes mass). We suggest that small mammals may find the sustained maneuvering and body positioning of copulation easier than do large mammals.
