The ‘good genes’ hypothesis of sexual selection predicts that male ornaments are favoured by female mate choice because male ornament reveals genetic quality. In species with different male reproductive tactics, variation in genetic quality among ‘sneaking’ males has rarely been investigated, as usually ‘sneakers’ are thought not to be chosen by females. Here we focused on the alternative reproductive tactic in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar Linnaeus, 1758) to test whether the skin colour of sneakers may reveal the performance traits of their offspring. A fully factorial breeding design was realized between 20 sneakers and two females using in vitro fertilization. We quantified the red and dark colorations of males and measured the survival of their progeny under semi‐natural conditions. In addition, the size of offspring and their emergence timing from the gravel nest were monitored in the laboratory. We found that darker males sired more viable offspring, whereas red coloration was negatively correlated with offspring survival. Nevertheless, darker and redder male pigmentations were linked to a delay in offspring emergence. These results demonstrate that colours can reveal individual genetic quality in an alternative male reproductive tactic, with male melanin‐based coloration being linked to both beneficial and detrimental effects for the offspring. This study was performed to investigate the age-dependent functional response of Aphidius matricariae Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) at varying densities of tobacco aphid, Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Six densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 numbers) of third instar nymphs of M. persicae nicotianae were daily exposed to one pair of 1-day-old A. matricariae until the parasitoid female died. Each host aphid density was replicated 10 times. The experiments were conducted at constant environmental conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 5% RH and 16:8h L:D photoperiod). The logistic regression model demonstrated that the functional response of A. matricariae was type III in the second day and type II in the first day and from third to the end of adult parasitoid lifetime. The handling time (Th) was lowest in the first day (0.2305 h) and highest in the sixth day (2.9296 h) of the parasitoid’s life. The searching efficiency (a) values were 0.0573, 0.0649, 0.0503, 0.0229, and 0.0077 h?1 in the first, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth days of the parasitoid’s life, respectively. Also, the b value for type III functional response was 0.0147 in the second day. The values of maximum attack rate (T/Th) ranged from 104.12 nymphs/24 h in the first day to 19.8 nymphs/24 h in the sixth day of parasitoid’s life. Based on the results, A. matricariae showed a high potential to control the population of tobacco aphid and the highest efficiency gained in the first half of the female parasitoid life.  相似文献

We examined colonization by fishes and macro-invertebrates from permanent streams into an artificial freshwater stream simulating lotic temporary bodies of water that exist for only a limited period each year. After introducing water, invertebrates such as chironomid larvae in mud increased in numbers rapidly in the experimental stream, although they were rare in mud in the permanent streams. Eleven of 12 fish species present in the permanent streams colonized the experimental stream and preyed upon invertebrates, although fish composition differed significantly between the two streams. About 100 days after the initiation of the experiment, both species richness and diversity in the experimental stream reached almost the same level as that in the permanent streams. More diverse fishes colonized the complex section where habitat diversity was high compared to the simple section in the experimental stream. Our study strongly suggests that lotic temporary waters such as temporary streams around main rivers have unique ecological characteristics and serve as valuable foraging sites for fish.  相似文献

Summary House flies, Musca domestica, respond to visual contrasts on the substrate if a resource is associated with the contrasting patterns. Visible resource patch boundaries serve as a signal to flies that they are about to leave a rewarding patch. Searching flies respond to such visual information by walking along the resource patch boundary and turning back into the patch at its edge. This edge detection and response serve as a mechanism for flies with visual cues to stay in a rewarding patch and locate more resources within it. The intensity of their response correlates with the quality of the resource. In the absence of visual cues, patch shape affects foraging success; flies find more resources in circular than in linear resource distributions. The effects of visual cues, however, render patch shape unimportant. Various substrate contrasts are effective as resource information for flies: dark (e.g., green) figures on bright (e.g., white) backgrounds or bright figures on dark backgrounds. Responses to substrate contrasts measured in this study indicate that, over the short term, house flies can learn a visual cue associated with a food source.  相似文献

Understanding the searching strategy of Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), might gain insight into the mechanisms by which control of Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) is obtained in glasshouses, and provide information on how to improve the biological control of aphids. The functional response of A. colemani in Petri dishes is described, as well as its behaviour on returning to a previously visited leaf disk with aphids. The number of aphids attacked during the first visit followed a sigmoid functional response. The increase of the parasitization rates was clearest at densities of up to 10 aphids/leaf disk. The duration of the first visit to a leaf disk increased with increasing aphid density. After re-entering a recently visited leaf disk, the parasitoid stayed for a much shorter time than on the first visit, and no effect of host density on the duration of the visit was observed. No evidence of patch marking was found, so the reduction of visiting times was probably caused by encounters with parasitized hosts.  相似文献

In the field, parental males of the black goby Gobius niger were always >9 cm L T, showed a conspicuous elongation of the first dorsal fin, and were darkly coloured. Larger parental males did not occupy larger nests or obtain more eggs, suggesting that over a threshold size reproductive success was not correlated with male size. The mating system was polygynous with different egg clutches simultaneously present in a nest. Smaller sexually mature males were observed around and inside nests in which spawning was occurring. These opportunistic males ranged in body size between 6 to 8 cm L T. In contrast to parental males, they did not show an exaggeration of the first dorsal fin and were cryptically coloured, thus resembling small females in their external morphology. Aquarium experiments confirmed that smaller males perform a sneaking behaviour, releasing sperm when parental males spawn. As a consequence, it is possible to define three male types: type I are small, without an elongated dorsal fin and adopt a sneaking mating tactic; type III are large, have a pronounced elongation of the dorsal fin and perform parental behaviour; type II are intermediate both in size and elongation of the first dorsal fin and behave as either as sneakers or, possibly, as parental males according to nest availability and male competition.  相似文献

Female sexual strategies affect male strategies and can play an important role in shaping mating systems. We investigated female sexual behaviour within five groups of grey-cheeked mangabeys in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and tested the hypothesis that females exhibit mate choice using as indications the prevalence of (1) females soliciting matings by presenting to males and (2) females refusing to mate with approaching males. In addition, we describe how these behaviours as well as grooming and copulation calls are distributed over high-ranking, low-ranking and migrating males and discuss these patterns with regard to trade-offs that could play a roll in female mate choice in multi-male groups. Females were promiscuous and initiated almost half of the matings, with both resident and migrating males. More than half of male mating approaches were refused by peak females. Female mate choice in this species may depend on individual female preferences, oestrus phase and male tactic.  相似文献
