The comparative study of lipid composition was carried out in four species of marine algae, Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis, Laminaria japonica, Sargassum pallidum, and Ulva fenestrata, as well as a higher plant grass wrack (Zostera marina). Plants were collected in the Japan Sea in spring at 2.9 and 5.5°C and in summer at 23°C. The main lipid components of membranes were determined, and the general patterns of the ratio of phospholipids (PL), glycolipids (GL), betaine (BL), and neutral (NL) lipids were discerned. The relative content of NL in all species (except A. tobuchiensis) was higher in summer. The level of triacylglycerols was as high as 18–37%. The content of individual classes of PL and GL varied between the spring and summer samples, the relative content of PL being higher in spring. In most species, the ratio of PL to GL decreased in summer. The content of free sterols did not depend on the season. The molar ratios of phosphatidylcholine and diacylglycerol-o-(hydroxymethyl)-(N,N,N-trimethyl)homoserine to free sterols varied from 0.9 to 1.7. The seasonal changes of lipid composition were apparently related to macrophyte adaptation to water temperature and to biology of their development.  相似文献

The invasive marine macroalga Sargassum muticum was recorded from Kilmore Quay, Co. Waterford, for the first time in the Republic of Ireland in 2001. It was found at several other places in that year and in subsequent years. An intensive survey was carried out from April 2003 to November 2003 to map the geographical distribution and spread of this invasive brown macroalga, and data on distribution were collected in subsequent years through 2006. This study indicated that S. muticum most probably arrived in the early or mid 1990s and has spread all around the Irish coastline colonising Co. Donegal for the first time in 2006. The results indicate that spreading is facilitated by boating and perhaps via shellfish transport. A rough rate of spread of 2–3 km year−1 has been calculated within one bay and for the Irish coastline of about 54 km year−1. Observations showed that S. muticum has been found growing in seagrass beds and in rock pools, which might have serious consequences for the biodiversity in rock pools and for the protective status of seagrass habitats. It is recommended that monitoring of S. muticum should continue, especially in areas of high amenity value and economic importance in order to observe possible effects on local flora and fauna, aquaculture, the seaweed industry and tourism.  相似文献

Fronds of clonal seaweeds with extensive holdfasts relative to frond size are known not to self‐thin during growth, even in crowded stands. We tested whether frond self‐thinning would occur for such a seaweed since these traits are more similar to those of unitary seaweeds, which do self‐thin in crowded conditions. We used Sargassum lapazeanum Setch. et N. L. Gardner (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) from the Pacific coast of Mexico, for which we first confirmed its clonal nature by performing a regeneration experiment in culture tanks. During the growth season (winter to late spring), S. lapazeanum stand biomass increased, while frond density and size inequality (Gini coefficient for frond biomass) decreased. These results indicate that self‐thinning occurred at the frond level. We propose a conceptual model for frond dynamics for clonal seaweeds in general. In stands of clonal species with small fronds and relatively extensive holdfasts (particularly when holdfasts are perennial), frond dynamics would be determined mostly by intraclonal regulation, which seems to prevent excessive crowding from occurring. Such species display a positive biomass–density relationship during the growth season. On the contrary, in stands of clonal species with large fronds relative to holdfast size, frond dynamics would be determined mostly by interactions among genets. For such species, self‐thinning may be detected at the frond level in crowded stands, resulting in a negative biomass–density relationship during growth.  相似文献

Sequences of the end of the 5.8S gene and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS‐2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA have been determined for 19 species of the brown algal genus Sargassum (Sargassaceae), representing three subgenera and eight sections (sections are in parentheses): Phyllotrichia, Bactrophycus (Teretia, Spongocarpus, Halochloa and Repentia) and Sargassum (Acanthocarpicae, Malacocarpicae, Zygocarpicae) to assess the taxonomic position of the section Phyllocystae traditionally included within the Bactrophycus. The sequence of Myagropsis myagroides (Mertens ex Turner) Fensholt (Sargassaceae) was used as an outgroup. Sequences of ITS‐2 were analyzed using neighbor‐joining, parsimony and maximum likelihood methods. The results showed the existence of three clades in Sargassum, corresponding to the three subgenera. The subgenus Phyllotrichia is positioned near the outgroup. Two robust clades were obtained, one corresponding to the subgenus Bactrophycus and the other to the subgenus Sargassum. Sargassum mcclurei Setchell and Sargassum quinhonense Nguyen, the two Phyllocystae investigated, are close to species belonging to the section Zygocarpicae in the subgenus Sargassum. A transfer of the section Phyllocystae to the subgenus Sargassum is therefore proposed on the basis of molecular data (ITS‐2) and morphological data (receptacles and basal leaf).  相似文献

Seasonal variations in growth, biomass, phenology, and phycocolloid content were studied in a population of Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen in Jacquin) Lamouroux on the coast of the state of São Paulo. H. musciformis grows epiphytically on Sargassaum cymosum C. Agardh in a zone ca. 0.5 m wide at the lower spring tide. It also epiphytizes, but to a lesser extent, Laurencia scoparia J. Agardh and occasionally Bryothamnion seaforthii (Turner) Kützing and Acanthophora spicifera (Vahl) Bargesen. Seawater temperatures vary from 19°C in winter to 29°C in summer. Variations in H. musciformis biomass (32–190 g dry weight · m?2), were controlled by several factors, notably seawater temperature, diurnal lower spring tides on sunny days accompanied by calm seas soon followed by rough water, and by grazine, especially by Gammaridea (amphipods) and Aplysia (sea-hares). Fertile tetrasporophytes were present all year, their frequency varying from 22–99%. Cystocarpic plants were rare; male thalli were not found. Carrageenan fields varied from 48–66% of dry weight. Lowest values of carrageenan occurred when sea-water temperatures were high (26–29° C) and biomass was low or, when biomass was high but frequency of fertile tetrasporophytes was highest. Mean field growth in plastic containers initiated from branches of H. musciformis (ca. 0.1 g) over a 28-day period was 0.48, 0.88, 1.30, and 1.53 g fresh weight, respectively, from summer to spring.  相似文献

The life cycle of the large dioecious alga Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh was completed in unialgal culture by controlling photoperiod in relation to the phase of growth. Embryos isolated from a naturally grown female thallus gave rise to early germlings that rapidly formed blades under both short-day (9 h L) and long-day (15 h L) conditions at 20° C Shoot elongation, which followed early blade formation, occurred under the short-day conditions hut not under the long-day conditions. Functional female and male receptacles developed when thalli 8–14 cm long grown under the short-day conditions were transferred to the long-day conditions; gamete fusion occurred when male and female thalli were grown together. Fertilized oospores gave rise to normal thalli in a manner similar to that for in situ plants. Thus, the life cycle of S. horneri was completed in laboratory culture.  相似文献

The conservation, restoration, and improved management of terrestrial forests significantly contributes to mitigate climate change and its impacts, as well as providing numerous co-benefits. The pressing need to reduce emissions and increase carbon removal from the atmosphere is now also leading to the development of natural climate solutions in the ocean. Interest in the carbon sequestration potential of underwater macroalgal forests is growing rapidly among policy, conservation, and corporate sectors. Yet, our understanding of whether carbon sequestration from macroalgal forests can lead to tangible climate change mitigation remains severely limited, hampering their inclusion in international policy or carbon finance frameworks. Here, we examine the results of over 180 publications to synthesise evidence regarding macroalgal forest carbon sequestration potential. We show that research efforts on macroalgae carbon sequestration are heavily skewed towards particulate organic carbon (POC) pathways (77% of data publications), and that carbon fixation is the most studied flux (55%). Fluxes leading directly to carbon sequestration (e.g. carbon export or burial in marine sediments) remain poorly resolved, likely hindering regional or country-level assessments of carbon sequestration potential, which are only available from 17 of the 150 countries where macroalgal forests occur. To solve this issue, we present a framework to categorize coastlines according to their carbon sequestration potential. Finally, we review the multiple avenues through which this sequestration can translate into climate change mitigation capacity, which largely depends on whether management interventions can increase carbon removal above a natural baseline or avoid further carbon emissions. We find that conservation, restoration and afforestation interventions on macroalgal forests can potentially lead to carbon removal in the order of 10's of Tg C globally. Although this is lower than current estimates of natural sequestration value of all macroalgal habitats (61–268 Tg C year−1), it suggests that macroalgal forests could add to the total mitigation potential of coastal blue carbon ecosystems, and offer valuable mitigation opportunities in polar and temperate areas where blue carbon mitigation is currently low. Operationalizing that potential will necessitate the development of models that reliably estimate the proportion of production sequestered, improvements in macroalgae carbon fingerprinting techniques, and a rethinking of carbon accounting methodologies. The ocean provides major opportunities to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and the largest coastal vegetated habitat on Earth should not be ignored simply because it does not fit into existing frameworks.  相似文献

The presence of d-aspartate (d-Asp), a biologically rare amino acid, was evaluated in 38 species of marine macroalgae (seaweeds). Despite the ubiquitous presence of free l-Asp, free d-Asp was detected in only 5 species belonging to the Sargassaceae family of class Phaeophyceae (brown algae) but not in any species of the phyla Chlorophyta (green algae) and Rhodophyta (red algae). All other members of Phaeophyceae, including 3 species classified into the section Teretia of Sargassaceae did not contain d-Asp. These results indicate that the presence of free d-Asp in marine macroalgae is restricted only to the Sargassaceae family, excluding the species in the section Teretia.  相似文献

为探究不同干燥方式、不同存储温度和存储时间对羊栖菜中岩藻黄素稳定性的影响,本研究考察了三种不同干燥方式,包括自然阴干、低温烘干和冷冻干燥,对羊栖菜中岩藻黄素稳定性的影响。结果表明采用冷冻干燥所得羊栖菜,含水量低,岩藻黄素含量高,达到699.2μg/g,岩藻黄素保留率为94.7%,远高于自然阴干及低温烘干。因此,冷冻干燥是最佳干燥方法。考察了四个不同温度(-20、4、25、30℃)存储对冻干羊栖菜中岩藻黄素稳定性的影响,结果表明随着存储温度的升高,岩藻黄素的降解率明显增高,因此,-20℃为最佳储存温度。  相似文献

The saline pond microalga, Dunaliella salina (Dunal) Teod. maintained in De Walne's (basal) medium under laboratory conditions was confirmed by amplifying the chromosomal DNA of the microalga by PCR with specific primers MA1 and MA2. Seaweed extracts obtained from Sargassum wightii and Ulva lactuca were amended separately at 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5% levels to the basal medium in order to assess their potential on the growth and concentration of pigments, viz. Chl a, Chl b and beta-carotene of the alga. beta-Carotene was isolated and visible absorption spectrum was taken at 443 and 475 nm confirmed the presence of 9-cis-beta-carotene and all-trans-beta-carotene isomers. Maximum yield, highest division rate (mu) and highest pigment concentrations were observed in the cells grown in 1.5% S. wightii and 2.0% U. lactuca amended medium and these cells were subjected to DAPI staining. The results of epifluorescence microscopy and image analysis revealed a significant enhancement of the cell and nuclear area of the microalgae.  相似文献
