Scrub typhus, transmitted through chigger mite bites, is a febrile disease associated with agricultural activities and primarily occurs in autumn. To address the increasing number of cases with scrub typhus over the past 3 years, we analyzed activity, visit history, and occupation data of 12,462 cases reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) between January 2019 and December 2021. We examined changes in incidence and general characteristics by visualizing the incidence and eschar bite locations using population data and a geographic information system. Gyeongsangnam-do had the highest overall incidence rate (22.7%), followed by Jeollanam-do (19.0%) and Jeollabuk-do (11.2%), during the study period. However, when considering the incidence rate per 100,000 people, Jeollanam-do had the highest number of cases at 129.1, followed by Gyeongsangnam-do (85.1 cases) and Jeollabuk-do (78.1 cases). Most cases were women (61.0%) in their 70s (28.4%), and the highest incidence occurred in the agricultural worker group during autumn (October–December). Bites occurred most frequently in the abdomen (18.1%), and fever (79.2%) and muscle pain (49.8%) were the main symptoms. We also found a positive correlation (r = 0.848) between chigger mite populations and disease outbreaks over 3 years. In conclusion, it is crucial to provide education on identifying the habitats of chigger mites and rodents (vectors), as well as the appropriate application of repellents. Promoting awareness and preventive measures against infectious diseases is of utmost importance for rural areas and the general public who frequently come into contact with natural environments.  相似文献

The relationships between the composition of the soil seed bank, the field layer vegetation, and the scrub canopy were investigated along a 69 m transect, grading from incipient woodland, through scrub, into intensively rabbit-grazed calcareous grassland. The results are used to assess the persistence of species associated with open calcareous grassland in the seed bank under developing scrub. Scrub age, composition and density, changed along the transect from the woodland to open grassland. A total of 35 forb and grass species were found in the field layer. The pattern evident in the scrub layer was also reflected in the herbaceous vegetation. The field layer in the most closed portion of the transect, where the scrub was oldest, was dominated by shade-tolerant species normally associated with woodland habitats. The abundance of these species decreased along the transect as the scrub age declined, and the field layer became increasingly dominated by species typical of open grassland. A total of 47 species germinated from the seed bank. Few species were recorded in the seed bank along the entire length of the transect. Overall, the seed bank was dominated by Hypericum perforatum and Centaurium erythraea, which accounted for 38.2% and 28.6% of emerging seedlings respectively. As with a number of similar studies, the composition of the seed bank had a low correspondence with the composition of the field layer vegetation. The results also emphasise that the composition of the seed bank can be viewed as an ecological palimpsest, with germinable seed of species from each stage of the old-field succession occurring in the soil. The seed bank is an important component in the re-vegetation of an area after disturbance such as scrub removal. This study supports the findings of previous research in showing that relatively few characteristic calcareous grassland species form persistent seed banks. The soil seed bank would therefore appear to be of limited value in the restoration of such grassland following scrub removal.  相似文献

Genetic diversity in three genera of perennial plants found in the sand pine, oak scrub in peninsular Florida was examined by allozyme electrophoresis. These plants vary greatly in terms of geographic range, population size, pollination ecology, and seed dispersal mechanisms. Ceratiola ericoides (Empetraceae) is a shrub that occurs throughout scrub and other sandy habitats in Florida and neighboring states. In contrast, Eryngium cuneifolium (Apiaceae) is a Federally endangered herbaceous perennial, limited to the southern end of the Lake Wales Ridge, site of a proposed National Wildlife Refuge that would be the first designed primarily to protect plant diversity. Four species of endangered woody perennial Dicerandra (Labiatae) are part of a monophyletic group endemic to Florida sand pine scrubs; Dicerandra frutescens and D. christmanii are found on the southern end of the Lake Wales ridge, D. cornutissima is found in north-central Florida, and D. immaculata occurs in a small area along Florida's Atlantic coast. Allozyme electrophoresis of 17 loci for C. ericoides indicated that 64.7% of the loci were polymorphic (Ps), that there were 2.55 alleles per polymorphic locus (APs), and that the mean gene diversity (Hes) was 0.141. The proportion of genetic diversity among the four populations (GST) was 0.059. For the 31 loci analyzed in E. cuneifolium, Ps was 32.3%, APS was 2.1, and Hes was 0.104. GST was 0.106. The woody Dicerandra species complex (four species) was analyzed for 17 loci. Ps was 64.7%, APs was 3.1, and mean gene diversity was 0.219. The mean GST value across the species complex was 0.137. Taken together these results suggest that considerable genetic variation is still present in the relict populations of the rare scrub taxa (Eryngium and Dicerandra), but that to preserve current levels of genetic variation will require protecting areas in each of several different scrub regions along a 350-km stretch of peninsular Florida.  相似文献

Summary Coastal sage scrub is a community found extensively throughout cismontane California south of San Francisco, but has been surprisingly little studied. In the study area, which extends from Santa Barbara to the San Gorgonio Pass, two major floristic groupings can be found. In the basin bounded coastwards by a line drawn along the axis of the Santa Ana Mountains a large number of native and introduced annual herbs and a few shrubs (e.g.Encelia farinosa), rare or absent in the remainder of the study area, characterize one floristic group. In the coastal region the variety of shrub species increases, and the herbs are predominantly native and more restricted in number. Eleven groups defined by physiognomy, structure and species dominance, and arbitrarily called associations, are recognized. These associations can be grouped into four physiognomic-structural types which transgress the boundaries of the floristic groups. Aims Little information has been available on the soil nitrogen transformation process of alpine scrubland under global warming and changing climate. This study aimed at clarifying seasonal dynamics of the soil nitrate and ammonium contents and their responses to increased temperature under different plant treatments. Methods We conducted a field experiment including two plant treatments (removal- or unremoval-plant) subjected to two temperature conditions (increased temperature or control) in Sibiraea angustata scrub ecosystem on the eastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The contents of soil nitrate and ammonium were measured at the early, middle and late growing seasons. Important findings The results showed that soil nitrate and ammonium contents exhibited obvious seasonal dynamics. Throughout the entire growing season, the soil nitrate contents increased firstly and then decreased, while the soil ammonium contents increased continually. Particularly, in the early and middle growing season, the soil nitrate contents were significantly higher than those of ammonium, regardless of increased temperature and plant treatments; however, in the late growing season, the soil nitrate contents were significantly lower than those of ammonium. These results implied that soil nitrification was the major process of soil nitrogen transformation in the early and middle growing season; soil ammonification contributed mostly to soil nitrogen transformation in the late growing season. Furthermore, different responses of soil nitrate and ammonium contents to increased temperature and plant removal treatments were observed at the different stages in the growing season. The effects of increased temperature on soil nitrate contents mainly occurred in the middle and late growing season, but the effects varied with plant treatments. Increased temperature only significantly increased soil ammonium contents in the unremoval-plant plots during the middle growing season. The effects of plant treatments on soil nitrate contents only occurred in the control plots (controlled temperature). Plant removal only increased soil nitrate contents in the early and middle growing season, but significantly decreased soil nitrate contents in the late growing season. Plant removal significantly decreased soil ammonium contents in the increased temperature plots during the middle growing season. Probably, in the early and middle growing season, scrub vegetation mainly absorbed soil nitrate and the absorption process was not affected by increased temperature. These results would increase our understanding of the soil nitrogen cycling process in these alpine scrub ecosystems under global warming and changing climate. © 2018 Editorial Office of Chinese Journal of Plant Ecology. Practitioners are challenged with choosing among many potentially effective methods for sowing seed in ecological restoration projects to achieve sufficient native plant establishment. We tested the effectiveness of seed sowing techniques on moderate and steep slopes in a Mediterranean climate by measuring native seedling density immediately following germination, as well as plant density, recruitment success, and soil movement through the second growing season. We calculated cost effectiveness of different methods as the native plant density per dollar spent sowing seed. While all sowing techniques resulted in significant native establishment compared with unseeded controls, hydro seeding on moderate slopes was the most cost effective (native seedlings established per dollar spent). Although all steep‐sloped seeding techniques resulted in high densities of native species, all methods also resulted in significant soil loss. Shrubs preferred hand seeding followed by jute netting on steep slopes, while forbs reached greatest densities with hydro seeding on moderate slopes. Seedlings of species with heavy seeds were present in greater densities than species with lighter seeds in imprint sowing treatments. The “best” seed sowing technique varied depending on slope and metric of success (native density, species richness, shrub density, or forb density). Different combinations of slope, technique, and success metric resulted in significantly different project costs, which implies opportunities for savings given careful decision‐making relative to mitigation needs on heterogeneous landscapes. Evaluations of techniques for restoring slopes are limited, yet critical for expanding the area capable of being restored and the application of limited conservation funding.  相似文献

California sage scrub (CSS), a native ecosystem type of low‐elevation areas of Southern California, is increasingly threatened by urban development, altered fire regimes, and vegetation‐type conversion to non‐native grasslands. Using pitfall traps, we examined how suburbanization, type conversion, and fire influence ground‐dwelling spider assemblages in eastern Los Angeles County, CA, by surveying spiders in three habitats (CSS, non‐native grasslands, and suburban areas) before and after a fire that occurred in a small portion of our study site. Spider assemblages in the suburban habitat differed from those in CSS and non‐native grassland habitats, but CSS and grassland assemblages did not significantly differ. This suggests that the urban development, but not vegetation‐type conversion to non‐native grasslands, has significant effects on ground‐dwelling spider assemblages. Fire had no observable effect on assemblages. Because ground‐dwelling spiders were not impacted by fire and type conversion, increased fire frequencies, which often result in the establishment of non‐native grasses, may not deleteriously influence this animal group, a differing pattern from other taxonomic groups. However, the rapid urban development occurring in low‐elevation areas of Southern California means that species requiring non‐suburban sites for their survival (15 species, 24.1%) may be threatened and require conservation assessment.  相似文献

The study on the smoke-tree (Cotinus coggygria var. cinerea) scrub was carried out by the methods of pointquarter and quadrat in Qingzhou Mountain area of Shandong Province. In the present paper, the spatial pattern and main species dispersion of scrub was reported. It was found in this study that the Shannon-Wiener diversity index increases with the increase of the resources content. The patchness indexes and niche breadth are different, not only on the same resource axis among species, but also on the different resource axis within one species. The value of niche overlap between every two species is high on soil resource axes, so the species are possibly competitive for utilizating these resources.  相似文献

Abstract Ecological restoration enjoys widespread use as a technique to mitigate for environmental damage. Success of a restoration project often is evaluated on the basis of plant cover only. Recovery of a native arthropod fauna is also important to achieve conservation goals. I sampled arthropod communities by pitfall trapping in undisturbed, disturbed, and restored coastal sage scrub habitats in southern California. I evaluated arthropod community composition, diversity, and abundance using summary statistics, cluster analysis, and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and investigated influence of vegetation on arthropod communities with multiple regression analysis. Arthropod diversity at undisturbed and disturbed sites was greater than at sites that were 5 and 15 years following restoration ( p < 0.05). Number of arthropod species was not significantly different among undisturbed, disturbed, and restored sites, and two restoration sites had significantly more individuals than other sites. Vegetation at disturbed and undisturbed sites differed significantly; older restorations did not differ significantly from undisturbed sites in diversity, percent cover, or structural complexity. In multiple regression models, arthropod species richness and diversity was negatively related to vegetation height but positively related to structural complexity at intermediate heights. Exotic arthropod species were negatively associated with overall arthropod diversity, with abundance of the earwig Forficula auricularia best predicting diversity at comparison (not restored) sites (r2 = 0.29), and abundance of the spider Dysdera crocata and the ant Linepithema humile predicting diversity at all sites combined (r2 = 0.48). Native scavengers were less abundant at restored sites than all other sites and, with a notable exception, native predators were less abundant as well. DCA of all species separated restored sites from all other sites on the first axis, which was highly correlated with arthropod diversity and exotic arthropod species abundance. Lower taxonomic levels showed similar but weaker patterns, with example families not discriminating between site histories. Vegetation characteristics did not differ significantly between the newly restored site and disturbed sites, or between mature restoration sites and undisturbed sites. In contrast, arthropod communities at all restored sites were, as a group, significantly different from both disturbed and undisturbed sites. As found in other studies of other restoration sites, arthropod communities are less diverse and have altered guild structure. If restoration is to be successful as compensatory mitigation, restoration success standards must be expanded to include arthropods.  相似文献
