The validity of the reference unit method for ocularly estimating aboveground phytomass non-destructively was assessed on two shrubby and two herbaceous species using three observers. A calibration equation was developed for each observer-plant species combination using measured dry masses of harvested plants. These equations were then used to estimate phytomass of additional individuals of the same species (validation group), which were also later harvested. Average relative errors of estimated individual plant masses in the validation group ranged from 17.1 to 47.3% among the observers. However, when phytomass estimates of the observers were averaged and the resulting means averaged for the validation groups, the relative error of estimate of the mean plant biomass dropped to between 0.2 and 8.0%. The reference unit method appears to be a valid way to estimate the mean phytomass of a group of plants, as is frequently required in community- or population-level studies.  相似文献

The population parameters of green rice leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps in hibernated generation was estimated by the capture-recapture method on the gramineous weeds of resting paddy field from late in April to mid-May, 1962–1965. The difficulty of applying the capture-recapture method to this insect is caused from the low density and the low activity of the leafhopper, so that it is necessary to make the suitable plan of capture-recapture series and to construct the special method to detect the population parameters. The number of adults differed greatly among the years and among the plots in the same year. But, in general, the density was relatively high late in April, and decreased rapidly in May. The number of males was higher than that of females late in April, but decreased rapidly to become lower in May. The sampling efficiency with sweep-net depends upon the many factors, such as weather and floristic conditions; especially the atmospheric temperature and the force of wind are considered to affect greatly to the efficiency. In general, low temperature and strong wind are the cause of low sampling efficiency.  相似文献

Recent declines in the genetic diversity of populations have stimulated research on the importance of genetic diversity for the functioning of natural communities. Current studies on this topic are based on the exploration of a limited number of clones and do not allow distinctions to be made between the effects of genetic identity and genetic diversity per se and to evaluate the effects of genetic diversity in genetically diverse communities. Also, most information comes from short-term studies, which are insufficient for evaluating the long-term effects relevant in relatively undisturbed communities of perennial species.We explored the importance of clone diversity vs. clone identity for stand productivity and the changes of the pattern over time. We used 18 clones of a perennial grass, Festuca rubra, to establish a set of communities composed of 1, 6 or 18 clones in two environments and studied the effects of genetic diversity on stand productivity over 3 years.Genetic diversity had a significant effect on stand productivity in the 1st year but not in the 2nd or 3rd year. In most cases, the observed yield was not significantly different from the total expected yield. The biomass of the mixtures never outperformed the biomass of the most productive clone, suggesting that clone identity is an important determinant of total biomass.The results indicate that the effects of genetic diversity on stand productivity may be transient and suggest that the conclusions of short-term studies on diversity effects should be evaluated carefully. They also suggest that individual clones are not complementary and that the properties of the stands are mainly additive results of the properties of the constituent clones.  相似文献

Summary The genetic variance among F2-derived lines of backcrosses (BCgF2-derived lines) depends on the backcross generation (g), the number of F1 plants crossed and selfed in generations 1 through g, and the number of BCgF2-derived lines evaluated. Additive genetic variance decreases linearly with backcrossing when one BCF1 plant per generation is crossed and selfed. The relationship is curvilinear if more than one BCF1 plant is used; as the number of BCF1 plants increases, additive genetic variance among BC1F2-derived lines approaches that among BC0F2-derived lines. The effect of population size on genetic variance is due both to fixation of alleles in previous generations and to sampling of genotypes in the population being evaluated.
