Long-term monitoring datasets provide a solid framework for ecological research. Such a dataset from the German long-term ecological research (LTER) site Rhine-Main-Observatory was used to set up a species distribution model (SDM) for the Kinzig catchment. The extensive knowledge on the monitoring data provided by the LTER-site framework allowed to calibrate a robust model for 175 taxa of stream macroinvertebrates and to project their distributions on the Kinzig River stream network using bioclimatic, topographical, hydrological, land use and geological predictors. On average, model performance was good, with a TSS of 0.83 (±0.09 SD) and a ROC of 0.95 (±0.03 SD). The model delivered valuable insights on three sources of bias that plague SDMs in general: (a) level of taxonomic identification of the modeled organisms, (b) the spatial arrangement of sampling sites, and (c) the sampling intensity at each sampling site. Taxonomic resolution did not affect SDM performance. The distribution of high predicted probabilities of occurrence in the stream network coincided with those segments in the stream network most densely and frequently sampled, indicating both a spatial and temporal sampling bias. Species richness curves confirmed the temporal sampling bias. Next to spatial bias, sampling frequency also plays an important role in data collection, affecting further analysis and modeling procedures. Results indicate an underrepresentation of low order streams, an important aspect that should be addressed by both monitoring schemes and modeling approaches.  相似文献

When clinical studies require enrolled patients to have abnormal assays, the natural tendency of repeat measurements to regress toward the mean can lead to a false assessment of effectiveness of therapy. We propose a method to more accurately estimate the true effect of therapy by adjusting for a component of improvement that can be attributed to regression effect. A new technique called the reef resource inventory (RRI) was developed to map the distribution and abundance of benthos and substratum on reefs. The rapid field sampling technique uses divers to visually estimate the percentage cover of categories of benthos and substratum along 2×20 m plotless strip-transects positioned randomly over the tops, and systematically along the edge of reefs. The purpose of this study was to compare the relative sampling accuracy of the RRI against the line intercept transect technique (LIT), an international standard for sampling reef benthos and substratum. Analysis of paired sampling with LIT and RRI at 51 sites indicated sampling accuracy was not different (P>0.05) for 8 of the 12 benthos and substratum categories used in the study. Significant differences were attributed to small-scale patchiness and cryptic coloration of some benthos; effects associated with sampling a sparsely distributed animal along a line versus an area; difficulties in discriminating some of the benthos and substratum categories; and differences due to visual acuity since LIT measurements were taken by divers close to the seabed whereas RRI measurements were taken by divers higher in the water column. The relative cost efficiency of the RRI technique was at least three times that of LIT for all benthos and substratum categories and as much as 10 times higher for two categories. These results suggest that the RRI can be used to obtain reliable and accurate estimates of relative abundance of broad categories of reef benthos and substratum.

Biodiversity is not distributed homogeneously in space, and it often covaries with productivity. The shape of the relationship between diversity and productivity, however, varies from a monotonic linear increase to a hump-shaped curve with maximum diversity values corresponding to intermediate productivity. The system studied and the spatial scale of study may affect this relationship. Parasite communities are useful models to test the productivity-diversity relationship because they consist of species belonging to a restricted set of higher taxa common to all host species. Using total parasite biovolume per host individual as a surrogate for community productivity, we tested the relationship between productivity and species richness among assemblages of metazoan parasites in 131 vertebrate host species. Across all host species, we found a linear relationship between total parasite biovolume and parasite species richness, with no trace of a hump-shaped curve. This result remained after corrections for the potential confounding effect of the number of host individuals examined per host species, host body mass, and phylogenetic relationships among host species. Although weaker, the linear relationship remained when the analyses were performed within the five vertebrate groups (fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds) instead of across all host species. These findings agree with the classic isolationist-interactive continuum of parasite communities that has become widely accepted in parasite ecology. They also suggest that parasite communities are not saturated with species, and that the addition of new species will result in increased total parasite biovolume per host. If the number of parasite species exploiting a host population is not regulated by processes arising from within the parasite community, external factors such as host characteristics may be the main determinants of parasite diversity.  相似文献

During the winters of 2001 and 2002, the effects of three strain of Agrobacterium rubi (A1, A16 and A18), a range of IBA concentrations (0, 2000, 4000 and 6000 ppm) alone and in combination with three strains of Agrobacterium rubi and date of cutting collection on the rooting of hardwood stem cuttings of kiwifruit cv. Hayward were evaluated. Treatments of hardwood stem cuttings of kiwifruit cv. Hayward with the bacteria, IBA and IBA plus bacteria were found to promote rooting. Highest rooting percentage was obtained from cuttings treated with 4000 ppm IBA plus A18 in cv. Hayward in both years. Higher rooting percentages were observed when shoots were collected in February rather than in January.  相似文献

 The design of optimum sampling strategies integrating criteria of efficiency relevant to multilocus models and many target populations has been investigated with respect to the number of plants and the number of seeds per plant to be sampled for a Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) gene pool. This study, using five populations and six polymorphic enzyme loci, shows that the number of plants rather than the number of seeds collected per plant primarily determines the success of seed sampling, suggesting that plant number plays an essential part in maintaining the allelic multiplicity of predominantly selfing species like Lima bean. According to the results, it appears that among Lima bean populations an efficient sampling procedure is achieved by collecting 1–4 seeds from 200 to 300 plants. These sample sizes will retain 8–10 alleles, regardless of their frequencies. When we consider polymorphism at the 5% level, it is expected that sampling 10–80 plants will collect combinations of 4–8 alleles. Based on data from genetic and demographic studies, we suggest an efficient sampling scheme for Lima bean germplasm at both population and geographical levels. This paper analyzes the power divergence estimators when homogeneity/heterogeneity hypotheses among standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) are taken into account. A Monte Carlo study shows that when the standard mortality rate is not external, that is it is estimated from the sample data, these estimators have a good performance even for small sample sets and in particular the minimum chi‐square estimators have a better behavior compared to the classical maximum likelihood estimators. In order to make decisions under homogeneity/heterogeneity hypotheses of SMRs we propose some test‐statistics which consider the minimum power divergence estimators. Through a numerical example focused on SMRs of melanoma mortality ratios in different regions of the US, a homogeneity/heterogeneity study is illustrated.  相似文献

The analysis of metabolic intermediates is a rich source of isotopic information for 13C metabolic flux analysis (13C-MFA) and extends the range of its applications. The sampling of labeled metabolic intermediates is particularly important to obtain reliable isotopic information. The assessment of the different sampling procedures commonly used to generate such data, therefore, is crucial. In this work, we thoroughly evaluated several sampling procedures for stationary and non-stationary 13C-MFA using Escherichia coli. We first analyzed the efficiency of these procedures for quenching metabolism and found that procedures based on cold or boiling solvents are reliable, in contrast to fast filtration, which is not. We also showed that separating the cells from the broth is not necessary in isotopic stationary state conditions. On the other hand, we demonstrated that the presence of metabolic intermediates outside the cells strongly affects the transient isotopic data monitored during non-stationary 13C-labeling experiments. Meaningful isotopic data can be obtained by recovering intracellular labeled metabolites from pellets of cells centrifuged in cold solvent. We showed that if the intracellular pools are not separated from the extracellular ones, accurate flux maps can be established provided that the contribution of exogenous compounds is taken into account in the metabolic flux model.  相似文献

Summary In case–control research where there are multiple case groups, standard analyses fail to make use of all available information. Multiple events case–control (MECC) studies provide a new approach to sampling from a cohort and are useful when it is desired to study multiple types of events in the cohort. In this design, subjects in the cohort who develop any event of interest are sampled, as well as a fraction of the remaining subjects. We show that a simple case–control analysis of data arising from MECC studies is biased and develop three general estimating‐equation‐based approaches to analyzing data from these studies. We conduct simulation studies to compare the efficiency of the various MECC analyses with each other and with the corresponding conventional analyses. It is shown that the gain in efficiency by using the new design is substantial in many situations. We demonstrate the application of our approach to a nested case–control study of the effect of oral sodium phosphate use on chronic kidney injury with multiple case definitions.  相似文献
