The hawk-dove (HD) game, as defined by Maynard Smith [1982. Evolution and the Theory of Games. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge], allows for a polymorphic fitness equilibrium (PFE) to exist between its two pure strategies; this polymorphism is the attractor of the standard replicator dynamics [Taylor, P.D., Jonker, L., 1978. Evolutionarily stable strategies and game dynamics. Math. Biosci. 40, 145-156; Hofbauer, J., Sigmund, K., 1998. Evolutionary Games and Population Dynamics. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge] operating on an infinite population of pure-strategists. Here, we consider stochastic replicator dynamics, operating on a finite population of pure-strategists playing games similar to HD; in particular, we examine the transient behavior of the system, before it enters an absorbing state due to sampling error. Though stochastic replication prevents the population from fixing onto the PFE, selection always favors the under-represented strategy. Thus, we may naively expect that the mean population state (of the pre-absorption transient) will correspond to the PFE. The empirical results of Fogel et al. [1997. On the instability of evolutionary stable states. BioSystems 44, 135-152] show that the mean population state, in fact, deviates from the PFE with statistical significance. We provide theoretical results that explain their observations. We show that such deviation away from the PFE occurs when the selection pressures that surround the fitness-equilibrium point are asymmetric. Further, we analyze a Markov model to prove that a finite population will generate a distribution over population states that equilibrates selection-pressure asymmetry; the mean of this distribution is generally not the fitness-equilibrium state.  相似文献

Fungal communities from gorgonians have been poorly documented and most studies of these communities have lacked defined sampling strategies. The objectives of this study were: (1) to estimate fungal diversity in Gorgonia ventalina; (2) to compare two sampling and tissue processing strategies: tissue fragments of different sizes vs. homogenized tissue. A total of seven genera and fourteen species of fungi were isolated on culture medium and identified by sequencing the nrITS. All but one species were new reports. In both treatments Aspergillus and Penicillium were the most common genera isolated. Most species isolated from fragments were not observed from homogenized tissue and vice versa. Reducing the size fragment increased significantly the number of species isolated per fragment. To better estimate fungal diversity in sea fans a strategy is proposed that combines sampling of small tissue fragments with homogenized tissue, since each technique yielded fungal species not detected by the other.  相似文献

Cardinium have been found as endosymbionts of Brevipalpus phoenicis, the mite vector of the Citrus leprosis virus. With the long-term objective being to understand the mechanisms of plant-virus-vector interactions, we evaluated the different storage conditions and periods, as well as the number of mites needed for PCR-amplification of such endosymbionts, making it possible to collect mites in different geographical regions without prolonged storage compromising subsequent analyses.  相似文献

The need for native lamprey conservation, improved lamprey fishery management, and better assessment of non-indigenous lamprey control measures has resulted in increased effort to survey lamprey populations and assess their status. Depending on the study objectives and target species/life stage, collection methods vary dramatically. We therefore provide a comprehensive review of sampling considerations and techniques used to capture, collect, handle, and enumerate both juvenile and adult lamprey life stages. Surveys for lamprey are often constrained by the lack of basic biological information, such as reliable characters for field identification of larvae (ammocoetes), migratory timing of anadromous forms, and spawning/nest building behavior of adults. However, there are a number of studies that have documented habitat preferences of the relatively sedentary ammocoetes. Consequently, existing sampling protocols have focused on the development of stratified sampling that targets optimal ammocoete habitat. In addition to this approach, we discuss methods and gear that can be used to survey migratory life stages, lamprey nests, and difficult-to-sample, deepwater ammocoete habitats.  相似文献

Pitfall trapping is a standard sampling method to compare the abundance or community structure of ground beetles. However, effects of sampling duration on biodiversity estimation of ground beetles according to different trap sizes have not been experimentally evaluated in temperate forests in Korea. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the interaction between trap sizes (SB, small‐sized bottle; MB, medium‐sized bottle; PC, plastic cup; PJ, plastic jar; PT, perforated type trap; FT, funnel‐type trap) and sampling duration (T1, 2 weeks × 2 sessions, 28 days; T2, 2 weeks × 4 sessions, 56 days; T3, 4 weeks × 2 sessions, 56 days) on estimation of ground beetle assemblages in Naejangsan National Park, a temperate forest in Korea. Funnel type and larger pitfall traps collected higher numbers of individuals and species than other trap sizes. Species composition of ground beetles was different by size of traps (SB, MB, and PC vs. PJ, PT, and FT). In particular, ground beetle composition in larger traps (PJ, PT, and FT) appeared to be influenced by environmental characteristics according to localities (e.g., soil characters and dominant tree species). These findings from our study support that pitfall trapping of ground beetles can be influenced by trap sizes per se as well as sampling durations and environmental characteristics. Thus, biodiversity monitoring in temperate forests should be conducted with long sampling duration (at least 28 days) using large‐sized traps (> 7.5 cm in diameter of trap mouthpart) considering expenses and study aims.  相似文献

The suitability of the ‘artificial substrate’ method, i.e. standardized surfaces of fiberglass screens, for the quantification of four benthic harmful algal bloom (BHAB) dinoflagellates (Gambierdiscus, Ostreopsis, Prorocentrum and Coolia) was tested relative to estimates from natural macroalgal substrates. Sampling took place in a variety of intertidal and subtidal coastal habitats under different water motion conditions, at depths from 1 to 7 m, in two archipelagos of the Macaronesia region: The Canary Islands and Cape Verde. An immersion time of 24 h was sufficient to adequately estimate dinoflagellate abundances. Seven replicates were established as the ideal replication level, considering both reproducibility and sampling effort. In most cases, cell abundances of the four dinoflagellate genera showed lower variability on artificial substrates than on macroalgae, leading to more reliable estimates of abundances. The ratio of mean cell abundances on artificial substrates to mean cell abundances on macroalgae highly varied among sampling sites for each genus. This was especially true for Ostreopsis and Coolia. Thus, given the potentially harmful nature of benthic dinoflagellates, the transformation of abundances expressed as cells g−1 of macroalgae to abundances expressed as cells cm-2 is risky, and it should not be attempted in monitoring and management programs of harmful microalgae. In summary, results of this study support the use of artificial substrates in monitoring programs of BHAB dinoflagellates, while the risks of using macroalgae are stressed.  相似文献

Endophytic insects and their parasitoids provide valuable models for community ecology. The wasp communities in inflorescences of fig trees have great potential for comparative studies, but we must first describe individual communities. Here, we add to the few detailed studies of such communities by describing the one associated with Ficus rubiginosa in Australia. First, we describe community composition, using two different sampling procedures. Overall, we identified 14 species of non-pollinating fig wasp (NPFW) that fall into two size classes. Small wasps, including pollinators, gallers and their parasitoids, were more abundant than large wasps (both galler and parasitoid species). We show that in figs where wasps emerge naturally, the presence of large wasps may partly explain the low emergence of small wasps. During fig development, large gallers oviposit first, before and around the time of pollination, while parasitoids lay eggs after pollination. We further show that parasitoids in the subfamily Sycoryctinae, which comprise the majority of all individual NPFWs, segregate temporally by laying eggs at different stages of fig development. We discuss our results in terms of species co-existence and community structure and compare our findings to those from fig wasp communities on other continents.  相似文献

Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) has evolved to be a promising technology due to its ability to detect a broad mass range of molecular species and create density maps for selected compounds. It is currently one of the most useful techniques to determine the spatial distribution of neuropeptides in cells and tissues. Although IMS is conceptually simple, sample preparation steps, mass analyzers, and software suites are just a few of the factors that contribute to the successful design of a neuropeptide IMS experiment. This review provides a brief overview of IMS sampling protocols, instrumentation, data analysis tools, technological advancements and applications to neuropeptide localization in neurons and endocrine tissues. Future perspectives in this field are also provided, concluding that neuropeptide IMS would greatly facilitate studies of neuronal network and biomarker discovery.  相似文献
