Recently, there have been several studies using open top chambers (OTCs) or cloches to examine the response of Arctic plant communities to artificially elevated temperatures. Few, however, have investigated multitrophic systems, or the effects of both temperature and vertebrate grazing treatments on invertebrates. This study investigated trophic interactions between an herbivorous insect (Sitobion calvulum, Aphididae), a woody perennial host plant (Salix polaris) and a selective vertebrate grazer (barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis). In a factorial experiment, the responses of the insect and its host to elevated temperatures using open top chambers (OTCs) and to three levels of goose grazing pressure were assessed over two summer growing seasons (2004 and 2005). OTCs significantly enhanced the leaf phenology of Salix in both years and there was a significant OTC by goose presence interaction in 2004. Salix leaf number was unaffected by treatments in both years, but OTCs increased leaf size and mass in 2005. Salix reproduction and the phenology of flowers were unaffected by both treatments. Aphid densities were increased by OTCs but unaffected by goose presence in both years. While goose presence had little effect on aphid density or host plant phenology in this system, the OTC effects provide interesting insights into the possibility of phenological synchrony disruption. The advanced phenology of Salix effectively lengthens the growing season for the plant, but despite a close association with leaf maturity, the population dynamics of the aphid appeared to lack a similar phenological response, except for the increased population observed.  相似文献

The effects of enhanced UVB radiation and drought stress on willow secondary phenolics were studied using the leaves of 8‐week‐old micropropagated plantlets from interspecific hybrids (Salix myrsinites L. ×S. myrsinifolia Salisb.) and pure species (S. myrsinifolia). The plantlets were subjected for 4 weeks to two levels of UVB radiation (ambient, enhanced) and two levels of watering (well‐watered, drought‐stressed) according to a 2 × 2 factorial design. Enhanced UVB radiation increased the total concentration of flavonoids and phenolic acids in all plantlets, while the total concentration of salicylates remained unaffected. Drought stress reduced the total concentration of salicylates and phenolic acids in S. myrsinifolia plantlets, while in hybrids only phenolic acids were affected. The response of phenolic acids to enhanced UVB in drought‐stressed plantlets was different from that in well‐watered ones, indicating that drought stress limited the accumulation of phenolic acids under enhanced UVB radiation. Flavonoids increased in response to enhanced UVB radiation in drought‐stressed plantlets, although drought caused serious physiological stress on growth. There were significant differences between hybrid and S. myrsinifolia plantlets with respect to the composition of phenolics and between families and clones with respect to their concentration. In addition, the response of salicylates, flavonoids and phenolic acids to enhanced UVB and drought stress was clone‐specific, which may indicate that climatic changes will alter the genetic composition of northern forests.  相似文献

2013年5月,在青藏高原高寒沼泽化草甸收集优势种黑褐苔草(Carex atrofusca)立枯体凋落物。6月初,选择3个样带:长期积水带、周期性积水带和无积水带,并结合凋落物分解袋的方法,在每个样带区设置网孔大小分别为大(4.5 mm)、中(2.0 mm)、小(0.1mm)的3种凋落物分解袋,研究积水状态和网孔大小对凋落物早期分解的影响。结果显示:长期积水显著抑制凋落物的分解,而周期性积水和无积水环境中凋落物的质量损失率在大、中、小网孔凋落物袋中没有显著性的差异;网孔显著影响凋落物质量损失率,表现为大网孔中网孔小网孔;在早期分解过程中,凋落物的氮、磷均表现为富集;积水状态显著影响凋落物分解后氮、磷的富集;网孔大小对凋落物氮富集的影响显著,而对磷富集的影响不显著;积水状态和网孔大小对凋落物氮富集影响的交互作用极显著,但对磷富集没有显著的交互作用。研究发现,积水状态和网孔大小影响高寒沼泽化草甸凋落物分解以及氮、磷养分动态,由于不同网孔对凋落物分解的影响可用来反映不同土壤生物对凋落物分解的影响,因此,积水和土壤生物对维持高寒沼泽化草甸生态系统的结构和功能起着非常重要的作用。  相似文献

Abstract

Salix alba L. and Salix fragilis L. are two closely related willow species whose phenotypic features, showing a large and continuous variation, have a low diagnostic value for identifying pure species and interspecific hybrids. In this paper, the effectiveness of different multilocus PCR-based molecular markers, such as I-SSRs, RAPDs and AFLPs in detecting genetic polymorphisms able to discriminate the two willow species was evaluated by analysing a set of 12 reference samples. Three genetic similarity indexes, Dice, Jaccard and Simple Matching coefficient, were used for all possible pairwise comparisons of individuals, revealing the same trend of variation within and between species when different marker systems were used. Cluster analysis, based on Dice genetic similarity coefficient, clustered the individuals of S. alba and S. fragilis into two distinct subgroups, indicating that the gene pools are well differentiated. Moreover, a number of private alleles for each marker system allowed the discrimination of the two species because always present only in one of the two. The utility of different marker systems in discriminating willow species was evaluated by the Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) and the Marker Index (MI) parameters. The variation of Dice's indexes obtained from a different number of experiments in relation to the marker systems is discussed.  相似文献

The heat shock response in three vegetatively propagated clones of Salix viminalis L. was studied. In the clone 78198, synthesis of a total of 58 proteins was induced or increased by heat shock. Of these proteins, 39 were found in both leaves and callus, 8 only in leaves, and 11 only in callus. The number of heat shock proteins differed between the three clones studied. The molecular weights of the heat shock proteins ranged from 18000 to over 94000. The optimal synthesis of heat shock proteins took place at 37–40°C, but several proteins could be induced at 25–30°C. The synthesis of the majority of the proteins present at a normal growth temperature (20°C) was not completely blocked by the heat shock. More than 12 h was needed for the reappearance of the normal protein synthesis pattern after heat shock.  相似文献

Photoinhibition was examined in naturally exposed willow leaves in the field. In the afternoon on clear and warm days, the quantum yield of electron transport, derived from gas exchange data, was decreased by 28%. Besides this photoinhibition, decreases in the photosynthetic capacity and in the stomatal conductance were also observed. Of these three limitations of carbon assimilation, photoinhibition was the major one at limiting light only.To investigate the generality of photoinhibition, shade- and sun-acclimated leaves of fourteen different species were compared in a laboratory study. Photoinhibition was quantified by fluorescence measurements following exposure to moderate and high light for 30 min. The extent of photoinhibition was inversely related to the photochemical quenching, qp, during exposure (the proportion of open PS II traps). This relationship was the same independent of the species, the light-acclimation state of the leaf and the light intensity. However, sun- and shade-acclimated leaves occupied opposite sides of the relationship: the sun-leaves showed lower photoinhibition and higher qp. Levels of damage by mixed natural infestations of the leaf-feeding chrysomelid beetles, Phyllodecta vulgatissima (L.) (the blue willow beetle) and Galerucella lineola (Fab.) (the brown willow beetle), were determined in replicated field plots of 24 Salix clones at Long Ashton (Bristol, UK) during 1993–94. Over the same period, the host plant preferences of both chrysomelids were investigated in a standard multiple-choice laboratory procedure, where beetles were enclosed in Petri dishes with leaf discs cut from young pot-grown trees propagated from shoot cuttings taken from 20 of the 24 willow clones represented in the field study. The laboratory experiments indicated that P. vulgatissima and G. lineola had similar host plant preferences in the range of willows examined (r >0.85). In both field and laboratory, the least preferred Salix clones and hybrids were those of 5. eriocephala, followed by S. purpurea, S. burjatica, S. dasyclados and S. triandra. Clones of S. eriocephala and S. purpurea were frequently rejected altogether in laboratory tests. Most preferred were clones of S. viminalis and several hybrids of S. viminalis, S. aurita, S. caprea and S. cinerea. These results substantiate the reports that P. vulgatissima and G. lineola are deterred from feeding on willows which have relatively high concentrations of phenolic (salicylate) glucosides in the leaves. The least preferred willows, particularly S. eriocephala, S. purpurea and S. burjatica, could be of great potential value in plant breeding for resistance to these willow beetle pests.  相似文献

Nymphal development of Cacopsylla moscovita (And.) (Homoptera: Psylloidea) takes place only on female catkins of Salix repens L. and close phenological synchrony is crucial because development times of catkins and nymphs are similar. Eggs are laid on catkins as soon as they develop and close synchrony between oviposition and budburst maximizes time available for nymphal development. Sampling adult C. moscovita in the field revealed little synchrony between egg development and budburst, with over 60% of females containing mature eggs four weeks before catkins first appeared. In the laboratory, egg development was influenced by both temperature and photoperiod. At 10°C, egg development occurred approximately one month earlier than at 5°C and two weeks earlier than in the field. Adult survival in the laboratory was substantially reduced at increased temperature, with only 20% of adults surviving longer than two weeks at 10°C, compared with over 95% at 5°C. Body condition (weight corrected for size) of males and females decreased significantly in the field over winter. However, body condition of females levelled off before budburst, coincident with egg development implying that females had resumed feeding. We discuss our results in relation to regulation of phenological synchrony between oviposition and catkin appearance.  相似文献
