A new species of willow from Crete, named Salix kaptarae Cambria, C. Brullo & Brullo, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, it shows close relationships with species belonging to the S. apennina group, mainly with respect to the leaf shape, and the hairy ovary, capsule and base of stamina filaments. Considerations on its ecology, leaf micro‐morphology and conservation status are also provided.  相似文献

We performed a common garden experiment using parental, F1, F2, and backcross willow hybrids to test the hypothesis that hybrid willows experience breakdown of resistance to herbivores. After exposing plants to herbivores in the field, we measured the densities/damage caused by 13 insect herbivores and one herbivorous mite. Using joint-scaling tests, we determined the contribution of additive, dominance, and epistasis to variation in susceptibility to herbivores (measured either as density or damage level) among the six genetic classes. We found the genetic architecture of susceptibility/resistance in the parental species to be complex, involving additive, dominance, and epistasis for each herbivore species. Although genic interactions altered plant susceptibility for each of the 14 herbivores, three distinct patterns of response of herbivores to hybrids were expressed. One pattern, observed in four herbivore species, supported the hypothesis of breakdown of resistance genes in recombinant hybrids. A second pattern, shown by six other herbivore species, supported the hypothesis of hybrid breakdown of host recognition genes. In other words, epistatic interactions for host recognition traits (probably oviposition/feeding stimulants or attractants) appeared to be important in determining herbivore abundance for those six species. The final patterns supported a structure of dominance, either for host recognition traits (in the case of three herbivore species) or for host resistance traits (for one herbivore species). The combination of differing responses of herbivore species, including members of the same genus and tribe, and the ubiquitous importance of epistasis suggests that many genes affect herbivore resistance in this hybrid willow system.  相似文献

A nutrient thin film hydroponic system has been developed which allows rapid screening of willow (Salix) clones for their resistance to heavy metals, and hence their use in phytoremediation. Two clones known to be different in their resistance to heavy metals (Salix burjatica (Germany) and S. triandra x viminalis (Q83)), could be distinguished on the basis of leaf biomass, root biomass and stem height after 6 weeks. There were also differences in the uptake of heavy metals between the two clones.  相似文献

Transfer of radiocesium from soils to the wood of willows is generally low. Therefore, willow short rotation coppice for energy production is a possible alternative land use in areas contaminated by radiocesium. A large number of willow clones are available differing in, for example, biomass production or nutrient uptake. In order to select a clone with a high biomass production and a low radiocesium uptake, 12 clones were screened in nutrient solutions, spiked with 134Cs. Radiocesium concentrations in the plants varied less than twofold between the clones. Shoot radiocesium concentrations were significantly related to shoot potassium concentrations (R2 = 0.55).

In a second experiment, four of these clones were grown in solution culture at varying K concentrations (0.08 to 2 mM). The radiocesium uptake was more affected by K supply than by the type of clone. The shoot radiocesium concentrations were reduced between 3.5‐ and 5.2‐fold by increasing the K supply from 0.08 to 0.4 mM, A further increase to 2 vaM did not affect radiocesium uptake. We conclude that intervarietal differences between willow clones were of less significance in determining radiocesium concentrations in the shoots than the impact of external K concentrations.  相似文献

The association between willow ( Salix ) and rust ( Melampsora ) is highly specific. Willows named Salix burjatica , S. dasyclados ( S. × dasyclados ) and S. × calodendron are important in renewable-energy plantations in the UK and western Europe. There has been much controversy over their origin, species status and nomenclature. It has been suggested that they have originated from hybridization between. S. caprea , S. viminalis and S. cinerea . In the present work, 59 willow clones were investigated through morphological examination and detached leaf inoculation using willow differentials, for their association, in southwest England, with M. capraearum and three pathotypes of Melampsora epitea (Me-A, B and C). M. capraearum was found on all clones of S. caprea and its hybrids with S. aurita ; Me-A on all S. viminalis clones; Me-B on wild S. cinerea , S. × calodendron , S. × dasyclados 'De Biardii 445' and S . 'Spaethii'; Me-C on all S. burjatica clones and most S. × dasyclados clones. Both M. caprearum and Me-A infected all S. × sericans ( S. caprea × viminalis ) clones and S. × dasyclados 'LA041/03'. We suggest that S. × dasyclados 'LA041/03' should be treated as S. × sericans ( S. caprea × S. viminalis ); S. burjatica , S. dasyclados and S. × dasyclados as synonyms; S. × dasyclados 'De Biardii 445' as S. × calodendron 'De Biardii 445'; and S . 'Spaethii' as S. × calodendron 'Spaethii'.  相似文献

Question: How does willow‐characterised tundra vegetation of western Eurasia vary, and what are the main vegetation types? What are the ecological gradients and climatic regimes underlying vegetation differentiation? Location: The dataset was collected across a wide spectrum of tundra habitats at 12 sites in subarctic and arctic areas spanning from NW Fennoscandia to West Siberia. Methods: The dataset, including 758 vegetation sample plots (relevés), was analysed using a TWINSPAN classification and NMDS ordination that also included analyses of vegetation‐environment correlations. Results: Based on the TWINSPAN classification, eight vegetation types characterised by willow (cover of upright willows >10%) were discerned: (1) Salix glaucaCarex aquatilis type, (2) AulacomniumTomentypnum type, (3) SalixBetulaHylocomium type, (4) Salix lanataBrachythecium mildeanum type, (5) SalixPachypleurum type, (6) S. lanataMyosotis nemorosa type, (7) Salix‐Trollius‐Geranium type and (8) SalixComarum palustreFilipendula ulmaria type. Willow‐characterised vegetation types were compositionally differentiated from other tundra vegetation and were confined to relatively moist valley and sloping tundra sites, from mire to mineral soils. These vegetation types were encountered across a broad latitudinal zone in which July mean temperature ranged from 6 to 10°C. Conclusions: Willow‐characterised tundra vegetation forms a broad category of ecologically and geographically differentiated vegetation types that are linked to dwarf shrub tundra, shrub tundra or mire. Because of complex ecological gradients underlying compositional differentiation, predicting the responses of willow‐characterised tundra vegetation to a warming climate may be complicated.  相似文献

Salix spp. nectar honey volatiles of Croatian origin were analyzed by headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME) and ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE), followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC, GC/MS). Isolated volatiles were found in the honey headspace and extracts with almost exclusive distribution of several abundant compounds (e.g., phenylacetic acid, pinocembrin, 8‐hydroxy‐4,7‐dimethylcoumarin, and 3‐hydroxy‐transβ‐damascone in the extracts, or safranal and lilac alcohols in the headspace). Comparison with Croatian Salix spp. honeydew honey revealed similarities regarding distribution of important shikimate pathway derivatives (e.g., high percentage of phenylacetic acid) and several norisoprenoids (α‐isophorone and 4‐oxoisophorone). On the other hand, distinct features of this honey were occurrence of compounds such as pinocembrin, 8‐hydroxy‐4,7‐dimethylcoumarin, phenylacetonitrile, norisoprenoids (major ones: 3‐hydroxy‐transβ‐damascenone and transβ‐damascone), more pronounced variability of linalool‐derived compounds, as well as the abundance of 3‐methylpropanoic acid, 3‐methylbutanoic acid, 2‐methylpentanoic acid, and 3‐methylpentan‐1‐ol.  相似文献

The use of willow cuttings for streambank stabilization is a common practice in riparian ecosystems throughout the United States. Many environmental factors govern the outcome of such planting. However, other factors such as preplanting treatments, planting methods, and physiological status of cuttings (dormant vs. actively growing) may also be crucial in determining the survival of willow cuttings. Actively growing (nondormant) Black willow (Salix nigra) cuttings, 30 cm in length and 1 cm in diameter at the base, were subjected to three soaking treatments (0, 7, and 15 days) prior to planting. Following the initial treatment, cuttings were grown in a greenhouse in pots under three soil moisture regimes (well‐watered but not flooded, permanently flooded, and intermittently flooded). Plant gas exchange, growth, biomass, and survival were measured. Results demonstrated that soaking for 7 days was beneficial to early development of cuttings in the well‐watered (control) soil moisture regime, enhancing percent bud flush and survival significantly. However, 15 days of soaking proved to be detrimental to survival of cuttings irrespective of soil moisture regimes. Results also demonstrated that the beneficial effects of 7‐day soaking were limited to the well‐watered soil moisture regime but not to the flooded or intermittently flooded regimes. Soaking nondormant cuttings may be worthwhile if the planting site is likely to present ample soil moisture but nonflooded conditions to the transplanted cuttings.  相似文献
