A hypothesis of existence of a general adaptation syndrome (GAS), in which different types of stress evoke similar coping mechanisms, resulting in adaptations, is tested for plants. As stress coping mechanisms, oxy-free radical scavengers and antioxidants, osmoregulation, the role of abscisic acid, jasmonates, nitric oxide, synthesis of heat shock proteins and phytochelatins as heavy metal detoxifiers are discussed. The Indian subcontinent has a large variety of freshwater, saline and marine wetlands. Whereas the mangroves are relatively well documented, very little is known about the other wetlands, with few exceptions. Only recently an inventory of these welands has been prepared but no effort has been made to classify them. A vast majority of the inland wetlands are temporary and/or man-made, and they have been traditionally used and managed by the local human populations. In this paper, first, we evaluate the classification schemes of the IUCN, US Fish and Wildlife Services and those of the Australian wetlands, for their applicability to Indian wetlands. Then, we propose a simple hierarchical classification of wetlands based on their location (coastal or inland), salinity (saline or freshwater), physiognomy (herbaceous or woody), duration of flooding (permanent or seasonal) and the growth forms of the dominant vegetation. We stress upon the hydrological factors which determine all the structural and functional characteristics of the wetlands. We consider that the various growth forms of wetland vegetation integrate the totality of hydrological variables and therefore, can be used as the indicators of different hydrological regimes.  相似文献

The involvement of a gene ofSynechocystis PCC6803,icfG, in the co-ordinated regulation of inorganic carbon and glucose metabolism, was established. TheicfG gene codes for a 72 kDa protein, which shows no homology with those registered in data libraries. Expression oficfG required glucose, the actual inducer probably being glucose-6-phosphate, and was independent of light and of the external inorganic carbon concentration. Mutants carrying an inactivated copy oficfG were constructed. Their growth characteristics were identical to those of the wild type under all regimes except in limiting inorganic carbon with glucose being present either before or after the transfer to the limiting conditions. These conditions completely prevented growth, both in the light and in the dark. The inhibition could be relieved by several intermediates of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Assays of various enzymic activities related to inorganic carbon uptake and to its assimilationvia either the Calvin cycle or phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase did not reveal the level of action of IcfG. Possible models include a blockage of the assimilation of both carbon sources in the absence of IcfG, or the inhibition of Ci incorporation route(s) essential under limiting inorganic carbon conditions, even when glucose is present, and even in the dark.  相似文献

Morphology and aestivation behaviour in some Madagascan acavid land snails   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Nine species of Madagascan acavid land snails were compared in a phylogenetic context. The two most plesiomorphic, Clauator johnsoni and C. moreleti, differ from the others by their high-spired shells, short tentacles, short tails, long necks, and crawling mode of hitching the shell along the ground. In the seven more apomorphic species, the crawling mode is smooth, with the shell resting on the tail, and the relative lengths of tail and shell correlate significantly. Among these seven species, three pairs of closest relatives (Helicophanta petiti and H. uesicalis, H. farafanga and H. souuerbiana, Ampeltta decaryi and A. julii) show evidence of phylogenetic constraints on ranked shell size. Aestivation site (as tentatively inferred from rare data) does not correlate with shell shape or size: burrowers have H/D = 2.7 to 0.6 and D = 70 to 25 mm; arboreals have H/D = 0.8 to 0.5 and D = 70 to 30 mm; the species with both the highest spire and the smallest diameter (C. moreleti) is neither a burrower or an arboreal, but stays on the ground surface. Inferred aestivation sites are randomly distributed phylogenetically. Climate shows no correlation, except that the arborcals are only from humid to wet regimes. Uniform shell colouration occurs only in burrowers (C. johnsoni, H. petiti, H. uestcalis), but disruptive shell colouration occurs in all others, including burrowers (H. farafanga, A. decaryt), ground-surface aestivators (C. moreleti), arboreals (H. souuerbiana, A. julii), and semi-arboreals (Ampefita subfunebris). Among all nine species, burrowers have significantly thicker shells (than their close relatives of similar size), wider bodies, and longer snouts than non-burrowers (H. souuerbiana is exceptional in being arboreal despite its huge size and in having the broad foot and snout of a burrower). Thus, although there is some evidence for phylogenetic constraints, natural selection for aestivation and crawling behaviours seems to have dominated the evolution of external body morphology and of shell thickness (but not shell size and shape) in these snails.  相似文献

Although the structural design of cellular bone (i.e., bone containing osteocytes that are regularly spaced throughout the bone matrix) dates back to the first occurrence of bone as a tissue in evolution, and although osteocytes represent the most abundant cell type of bone, we know as yet little about the role of the osteocyte in bone metabolism. Osteocytes descend from osteoblasts. They are formed by the incorporation of osteoblasts into the bone matrix. Osteocytes remain in contact with each other and with cells on the bone surface via gap junction–coupled cell processes passing through the matrix via small channels, the canaliculi, that connect the cell body–containing lacunae with each other and with the outside world. During differentiation from osteoblast to mature osteocyte the cells lose a large part of their cell organelles. Their cell processes are packed with microfilaments. In this review we discuss the various theories on osteocyte function that have taken in consideration these special features of osteocytes. These are (1) osteocytes are actively involved in bone turnover; (2) the osteocyte network is through its large cell-matrix contact surface involved in ion exchange; and (3) osteocytes are the mechanosensory cells of bone and play a pivotal role in functional adaptation of bone. In our opinion, especially the last theory offers an exciting concept for which some biomechanical, biochemical, and cell biological evidence is already available and which fully warrants further investigations. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Growth rates, accumulation dynamics, and species succession of periphytic diatom communities were examined in the presence and absence of natural ultraviolet (UV) radiation using a series of outdoor, continuous-flow experimental flumes located on the South Thompson River, British Columbia. In a short-term experiment (2–3 wk), log-phase growth rates of naturally seeded diatom communities comprised of Tabellaria fenestrata (Lyngb.) Kütz., T. flocculosa (Roth) Kütz., Fragilaria crotonesis Kitton, and F. vaucheriae (Ehr.) Peter. exposed to 90% ambient photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) + UV were 30–40% lower than growth rates under 90% PAR alone. UV inhibition of growth rate was independent of the degree of P limitation within the range of relative specific growth rates (μ:μmax-P) of 0.5–1.0. In a long-term trial, inhibition of attached diatom accumulation under 90% PAR + UV during the first 2–3 wk was corroborated. Reduction of full sunlight to 50% PAR + UV prevented the initial inhibition phase. The initial inihibitory effect of 90% PAR + UV on algal accumulation was reversed after 3–4 wk, and by 5 wk total diatom abundance (chlorophyll a, cell numbers and cell biovolumes) in communities exposed to PAR + UV were 2–4-old greater than in communities protected from UV. Under 90% PAR + UV and 50% PAR + UV, a succession to stalked diatom genera (Cymbella and Gomphoneis) occurred. Species succession under UV radiation doubled the mean cell size of the diatom communities. The shift from inhibition to a long-term increase in the autotrophic community under PAR + UV compared to PAR alone provides further evidence against the use of short-term incubation experiments to define the long-term implications of increases in UVB. These results suggest that the ecological effects of present-day levels of UVB and UVB:UVA ratios on autotrophic communities are not well understood and might be mediated through complex trophic level interactions.  相似文献

The influence of temperature and photoperiod on raffinose synthesis in spruce roots (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was investigated under controlled environmental conditions in a phytotron. The raffinose content of the roots increased when the plants were subjected simultaneously to a change from long to short days and from summer-like day and night temperatures to a climate which was more than 10° C colder. Only a very slight raffinose accumulation resulted from a change of day-length or temperature alone, but a subsequent additional change of temperature or daylength, respectively, caused an increase in the raffinose content, yet only to half the amount found when both climate factors changed simultaneously. When the shoot was left under non-inducing conditions, but the root was cooled, the raffinose content increased in the root, but not in the shoot. The root was also capable of inducing raffinose if the shoot was cut off after a few days of cold adaptation of the whole plant. For all climate changes the sucrose content changed much less than the raffinose content. Desert algae are important components of the desert soil crust and play an essential role in desert soil ecosystem development. Owing to their special habitat, desert algae are often exposed to harsh environments, among which drought represents the most common stress. Green algae are considered to have drought tolerance potential; however, only a few studies have investigated this. In this study, we selected the green alga Chlorella sp., which was isolated from desert soil, and studied its physiological response to polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000-induced drought stress. The results showed that drought stress can affect the photosynthetic efficiency of Chlorella sp., reduce its water retention ability, and destroy its ultrastructure. However, Chlorella sp. can cope with drought stress through a series of physiological regulatory strategies. Protective strategies include quick recovery of photosynthetic efficiency and increased chlorophyll content. In addition, induced synthesis of soluble proteins, lipids, and extracellular polysaccharide (EPS), and accumulation of osmotic regulatory substances, such as sucrose and trehalose, also contribute to improving drought tolerance in Chlorella sp. This study provides insights into the physiological responses of Chlorella sp. to drought stress, which may be valuable for understanding the underlying drought adaptation mechanisms of desert green algae.  相似文献

The effects of long term exposure to suboptimal growth temperature on the photosynthetic apparatus of Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher were investigated using carbon fixation rate versus irradiance curves and the variable fluorescence induction method. Carbon fixation rates per unite chlorophyll a at saturating (pBm) and subsaturating (αB) irradiances were 55% and 39% lower, respectively, at 12° C than at 20° C. Chlorophyll a quotas and the spectrally averaged in vivo absorption cross section normalized to chlorophyll a (a*) were not significantly different at these two temperatures. Analysis of the fluorescence kinetics revealed 1) no significant variations of the amount of PSII photoactive reaction centers per unit chlorophyll a, 2) a 14% decrease of the PSII quantum yield(+) and 3) a 29% decrease of the energy transfer efficiency between the light harvesting chlorophyll a pigment bed and the PSII reaction centers. The decrease in energy transfer efficiency between the antennae and the PSII reaction centers at 12° C was interpreted as a mechanism to avoid photoinhibition.  相似文献
