Book Review
《Journal of bryology》2013,35(3):261-263
Abstract

Most studies on population ecology of bryophytes have involved common species. However, some studies have compared life history strategies in rare and common species. We review the life history strategies (life expectancy, sexual and asexual reproduction, spore production, spore size and dispersal) for species that are rare in relation to pattern and persistency of suitable habitat patches. In particular, we discuss the dynamics on two levels, within and among localities, for different categories of rare species. We predict that most rare species will be found to have restricted dispersal capacities but higher than average life expectancies of local subpopulations. Natural rarity is distinguished from human-induced rarity and species rare for the latter reason are distinguished as 'threatened'.  相似文献

In this report, we investigated the in vivo cell biology of cancer cells during immune rejection. The use of nestin-driven green fluorescent protein (ND-GFP) transgenic mice as hosts, in which nascent blood vessels express GFP, and implanted dual-color mouse mammary tumor 060562 (MMT) cells, in which the cytoplasm expresses red fluorescent protein (RFP) and the nuclei express GFP, allowed very important novel observations of angiogenesis and subcellular death pathways during immune rejection of a tumor. Nascent blood vessels did not form in the initially-growing mouse mammary tumor in ND-GFP immunocompetent mice. In contrast, in ND-GFP immunodeficient nude mice, numerous GFP-expressing nascent blood vessels grew into the tumor. The results suggest that insufficient nascent tumor angiogenesis was important in tumor rejection. During immune rejection, the cancer cells deformed their cytoplasm and nuclei, which were readily imaged by RFP and GFP, respectively. The nuclear membrane of the cancer cells ruptured, and chromatin extruded during partition of cytoplasm and nuclei. T lymphocytes infiltrated into the initially-growing tumor in the nestin-GFP transgenic immunocompetent mice. The cytotoxic role of the sensitized T lymphocytes was confirmed in vitro when they were co-cultured with MMT cells. The CD8a-positive lymphocytes attached to the cancer cells and caused nuclear condensation, deformation, and partition from their cytoplasm, similar to what occurred in vivo. The color-coded subcellular fluorescence-imaging model of immune rejection of cancer cells can provide a comprehensive system for further testing of immune-based treatment for cancer.  相似文献

Diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) converts diacylglycerol (DG) to phosphatidic acid, both of which act as second messengers to mediate a variety of cellular mechanisms. Therefore, DGK contributes to the regulation of these messengers in cellular signal transduction. Of DGK isozymes cloned, DGKzeta is characterized by a nuclear localization signal that overlaps with a sequence similar to the myristoylated alanine-rich C-kinase substrate. Previous studies showed that nuclear DG is differentially regulated from plasma membrane DG and that the nuclear DG levels fluctuate in correlation with cell cycle progression, suggesting the importance of nuclear DG in cell cycle control. In this connection, DGKzeta has been shown to localize to the nucleus in fully differentiated cells, such as neurons and lung cells, although it remains elusive how DGK behaves during the cell cycle in proliferating cells. Here we demonstrate that DGKzeta localizes to the nucleus during interphase including G1, S, and G2 phases and is associated with chromatin although it dissociates from condensed chromatin during mitotic phase in NIH3T3 cells. Furthermore, this localization pattern is also observed in proliferating spermatogonia in the testis. These results suggest a reversible association of DGKzeta with histone or its related proteins in cell cycle, plausibly dependent on their post-translational modifications.  相似文献

Multidimensional proteins such as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) exhibit distinct activities unrelated to their originally identified functions. Apart from glycolysis, GAPDH participates in iron metabolism, membrane trafficking, histone biosynthesis, the maintenance of DNA integrity and receptor mediated cell signaling. Further, multifunctional proteins exhibit distinct changes in their subcellular localization reflecting their new activities. As such, GAPDH is not only a cytosolic protein but is localized in the membrane, the nucleus, polysomes, the ER and the Golgi. In addition, although the initial subcellular localizations of multifunctional proteins may be of significance, dynamic changes in intracellular distribution may occur as a consequence of those new activities. As such, regulatory mechanisms may exist through which cells control multifunctional protein expression as a function of their subcellular localization. The temporal sequence through which subcellular translocation and the acquisition of new GAPDH functions is considered as well as post-translational modification as a basis for its intracellular transport.  相似文献
