We present a theory of the origin and evolution of infant-directed song, a form of music found in many cultures. After examining the ancestral ecology of parent-infant relations, we propose that infant-directed song arose in an evolutionary arms race between parents and infants, stemming from the dynamics of parent-offspring conflict. We describe testable predictions that follow from this theory, consider some existing evidence for them, and entertain the possibility that infant-directed song could form the basis for the development of other, more complex forms of music. 相似文献

Giardia lamblia is a unicellular, early branching eukaryote causing giardiasis, one of the most common human enteric diseases. Giardia, a microaerophilic protozoan parasite has to build up mechanisms to protect themselves against oxidative stress within the human gut (oxygen concentration 60 μM) to establish its pathogenesis. G. lamblia is devoid of the conventional mechanisms of the oxidative stress management system, including superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and glutathione cycling, which are present in most eukaryotes. NADH oxidase is a major component of the electron transport chain of G. lamblia, which in concurrence with disulfide reductase, protects oxygen-labile proteins such as pyruvate: ferredoxin oxidoreductase against oxidative stress by sustaining a reduced intracellular environment. It also contains the arginine dihydrolase pathway, which occurs in a number of anaerobic prokaryotes, includes substrate level phosphorylation and adequately active to make a major contribution to ATP production. 相似文献

Interleukin (IL) -33 is a nuclear protein that is released from damaged cells and acts as an alarmin. We investigated the expression of IL-33 in human gingival fibroblasts after stimulation by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Human periodontal tissue samples were collected and fixed in phosphate-buffered 4% formalin in saline and processed to paraffin blocks. TNF-α was immunostained in samples of ten periodontitis patients and ten controls. Human gingival fibroblasts were isolated using an explant culture technique. The influence of TNF-α on IL-33 in gingival fibroblasts was analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The number of TNF-α positive cells was significantly greater in periodontitis samples than in controls. TNF-α was located mainly in macrophage- and fibroblast-like cells, vascular endothelial cells and epithelial cells. Analysis of IL-33 expression in cell culture lysates showed that TNF-α induced IL-33 in cultured gingival fibroblasts. Periodontitis samples are characterized by Th2 cell dominance, which has been linked to anti-inflammatory responses and periodontal repair. TNF-α-induced IL-33 may link inflammation directly to the IL-33-dependent stimulation of Th2 cytokine producing cells and participate in the induction of lymphocytes, which results in protective, anti-inflammatory and reparative responses. 相似文献

The plant phytohormone cytokinin plays an important role in many facets of plant growth and development by regulating cell division and differentiation. Recent studies have shed significant light into the mechanisms of cytokinin metabolism and signaling. However, little is known about how the hormone is transported in planta, although it has been proposed that the hormone is presumably transported in nucleoside-conjugated forms. Here, we report the identification and characterization of cytokinin transporters in Arabidopsis. We previously reported that a gain-of-function mutation in the PGA22/AtlPT8 gene caused overproduction of cytokinins in planta. In an effort to screen for suppressor of pga22/atipt8 (soi) mutants, we identified a mutant soi33-1. Molecular and genetic analyses indicated that S0133 encodes a putative equilibrative nucleoside transporter (ENT), previously designated as AtENT8. Members of this small gene family are presumed to be involved in the transport of nucleosides in eukaryodc cells. Under conditions of nitrogen starvation, loss-of-function mutations in SOI33/AtENT8 or in a related gene AtENT3 cause a reduced sensitivity to the nucleoside-type cytokinins isopentenyladenine riboside (iPR) and transzeatin riboside (tZR), but display a normal response to the free base-type cytokinins isopentenyladenine (iP) and trans-zeatin (tZ). Conversely, overexpression of SOI33/AtENT8 renders transgenic plants hypersensitive to iPR but not to iP. An in planta measurement experiment indicated that uptake efficiency of^3Hlabeled iPR was reduced more than 40% in soi33 and atent3 mutants. However, a mutation in AtENT1 had no substantial effect on the cytokinin response and iPR uptake efficiency. Our results suggest that SOI33/AtENT8 and AtENT3 are involved in the transport of nucleoside-type cytokinins in Arabidopsis. 相似文献

Supramembrane structures that connect conjugating agrobacterial cells were visualized for the first time by transmission electron
microscopy. The primary contact of cells during conjugation was shown to occur through the formation of long pili containing
no VirB1 protein. Pretreatment of agrobacterial cells with acetosyringone resulted in a six-to tenfold increase in the transfer
frequency of plasmid pTd33 at 19–25°C and had almost no effect at 30°C. The transfer of plasmid pTd33 fromA. tumefaciens strain GV3101 to plasmid-freeA. tumefaciens strain UBAPF-2 was 16 times decreased after the centrifugation of cells. The transfer efficiency of plasmid pTd33 fromA. tumefaciens strain LBA2525 (virB2::lacZ) to plasmid-freeA. tumefaciens strain UBAPF-2 was one order of magnitude lower than the transfer from the wild-typeA. tumefaciens strain GV3101. Treatment of donor cells with 0.01% SDS before mating decreased the transfer efficiency by a factor of 26.
