Goal, Scope and Background

A number of impact assessment methodologies are available to the LCA practitioner. They differ, and often there is not one obvious choice among them. The question therefore naturally arises: ‘Does it make any difference to my conclusions which method I choose?’ To investigate this issue, a comparison is performed of three frequently applied life cycle impact assessment methods.

Methods

The three life cycle impact assessment methods EDIP97 [1], CML2001 [2] and Eco-indicator 99 [3] are compared on their performance through application to the same life cycle inventory from a study of a water-based UV-lacquer. EDIP97 and CML2001 are both midpoint approaches and hence quite similar in their scope and structure, and this allows a comparison during both characterisation and normalisation. The third impact assessment method Eco-indicator 99 is an endpoint method and different in scope and structure from the other two. A detailed comparison can not be done but a comparative analysis of the main contributors to the Eco-indicator 99 results and the weighted and aggregated EDIP97 results is performed.

Results and Discussion

Following a translation into common units of the EDIP97 and CML2001 output, differences up to two orders of magnitude are found for some of the indicator results for the impact categories describing toxicity to humans and ecosystems, and there is little similarity in the patterns of major contributors among the two methods. For human toxicity the CML2001 score is dominated by contribution from metals while the EDIP97 score is caused by a solvent and nitrogen oxides. For aquatic ecotoxicity, metals are the main contributors for both methods but while it is vanadium for CML2001, it is strontium for EDIP97. After normalisation, the differences are reduced but still considerable. For the other impact categories, the two methods show only minor differences. The comparison of the main contributors to the Eco-indicator 99 results and the weighted and aggregated EDIP97 results identifies nitrogen oxides as the main contributor for both methods. It is, however, much more dominant for Eco-indicator 99 while the EDIP97 score represents important contributions from a number of different substances, and furthermore, the analysis reveals that the aggregated scores for the two methods come from different impacts. It is thus difficult to extend the findings for these two methods to other inventories.

Conclusion

For EDIP97 and CML2001, it mainly matters which method is used if the chemical impacts on human health and ecosystem health are important for the study. For the other impact categories, the differences are minor for these two methodologies. For EDIP97 and Eco-indicator 99, the patterns of most important contributors to the weighted and aggregated impact scores are rather different, and considering the known differences in the underlying framework and models, the results of the two methods may well go in opposite directions for some inventories even if the conclusion is the same for the inventory studied in this paper.

Recommendations and Oudook

Particularly for the impact categories representing toxic impacts from chemicals, the study demonstrates the need for more a detailed analysis of the causes underlying the big differences revealed between the methods.

Restoration of degraded ecosystems is an important societal goal, yet inadequate monitoring and the absence of clear performance metrics are common criticisms of many habitat restoration projects. Funding limitations can prevent adequate monitoring, but we suggest that the lack of accepted metrics to address the diversity of restoration objectives also presents a serious challenge to the monitoring of restoration projects. A working group with experience in designing and monitoring oyster reef projects was used to develop standardized monitoring metrics, units, and performance criteria that would allow for comparison among restoration sites and projects of various construction types. A set of four universal metrics (reef areal dimensions, reef height, oyster density, and oyster size–frequency distribution) and a set of three universal environmental variables (water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) are recommended to be monitored for all oyster habitat restoration projects regardless of their goal(s). In addition, restoration goal‐based metrics specific to four commonly cited ecosystem service‐based restoration goals are recommended, along with an optional set of seven supplemental ancillary metrics that could provide information useful to the interpretation of prerestoration and postrestoration monitoring data. Widespread adoption of a common set of metrics with standardized techniques and units to assess well‐defined goals not only allows practitioners to gauge the performance of their own projects but also allows for comparison among projects, which is both essential to the advancement of the field of oyster restoration and can provide new knowledge about the structure and ecological function of oyster reef ecosystems.  相似文献

The purpose of this position article was to design a set of criteria (data elements) for a wide range of cancer biomarkers (CBs) in an attempt to standardize biomarkers features through a common language as a foundation for a database. Data elements are described as a set of generic criteria, which should characterize nearly all biomarkers introduced in the literature. Data elements were extracted from the review of prominent features that biomarkers represent within various categories. The extracted characteristics of biomarkers produced a short list of shared and unique generic features such as biological nature and history; stage/phase of study; sensitivity and specificity; modes of action; risk assessment; validation status; technology, and recommendation status for diversified biomarkers. To tailor data elements on specific markers, a cytokine, such as macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF), which has been proposed as a ‹potentially suitable biomarker’ for diagnosis of ovarian, lung, breast, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers, was selected as a Model biomarker. Small scale clinical studies suggested the superior usefulness of M-CSF compared with traditional markers for cancer detection. A key criterion for selecting Model marker and tailoring data elements for detection of cancer was the comparison of data on its specificity and sensitivity with traditional markers. The design of data elements for standardizing CBs criteria is considered a Research Tool and a foundation for developing a comprehensive CBs database useful for oncology researchers for a wide range of biomarkers. Validation, integration and proper packaging, data visualization and recommendation of suitability of CBs, by a panel of experts, for technology development are important challenging next steps toward developing a reliable database, which would allow professionals to effectively retrieve and study integrated information on potentially useful markers; identify important knowledge gaps and limitations of data; and assess state of technologies and commercialization of markers at a point of need. Appropriate use of integrated information on biomarkers in clinical practices would eventually account for more cost-effective characteristics of an individual’s state of health.  相似文献

 Managing a coral reef in a small island state is a difficult task. Apart from having conflicting objectives and few data there is the added problem of how to evaluate the less tangible benefits of management. This study reports the successful use of multiple criteria analysis to help the managers of a coral reef to make “good” decisions. “Good” decisions are consistent with the community’s desires to, in this case, preserve social and ecological values while simultaneously maintaining the economic benefits of dive tourism and maintaining the park as a global model of successful management. Multiple criteria analysis provides a systematic framework for evaluating management options. This study presents one of the first times multiple criteria analysis has been used in coral reef management, let alone in a non-industrialised setting. Spring-sown (vegetative) and autumn-sown (flowering) swards of Lolium perenne cvs Melle, Aurora and their hybrid growing in 0.9 m deep bins of soil in the glasshouse were compared, a) as drought progressed from June to August 1986, and b) after cutting, fertilising and re-watering.
During drought, vegetative plants produced more herbage, had initially higher leaf extension rates, had longer and wider leaves, maintained more tillers, had lower mortality, adjusted osmotic potential more effectively and had stomata less sensitive to stress than did flowering plants. On re-watering, previously stressed flowering plants regrew more slowly than the irrigated controls, whereas previously stressed vegetative plants regrew more rapidly than the controls.
Aurora was the most drought-resistant population, mainly because of low tiller death rates. The hybrid tended to have the lowest leaf water potentials and conductances and grew poorly during drought. Possible underlying physiological mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between adaptive and productive performance and determine which characteristics related to adaptation could be included as criteria for the selection of Brahman bulls managed in a tropical region. Fifty Brahman bulls were evaluated in relation to productive performance and adaptive capacity to a hot environment. The animals were grouped according to the following characteristics: Respiratory rate (RR), Sweating rate (SR) and coat traits. Three clusters were formed with these different characteristics related to thermoregulation after that these clusters were compared with productive performance that includes weighing of animals, carcass and scrotal circumference. The high adapted group corresponded to the animals with higher productive performance, with heavier animals in terms of weight at 550 days and carcass weight. The principal components analysis (PCA1) showed that carcass weight (0.95), weight at 550 days (0.92) and gain weight (0.71) were characteristics strongly correlated with the performance of the animals. These sets of characteristics were analyzed together (productive characteristics) in a multiple regression. The animals with better productive performance presented shorter hair, a greater capacity to heat dissipate by sweating and a lower rectal temperature. These characteristics were most suitable to inclusion in the breeding programs, resulting in higher economic gains. It is possible to simultaneously select resistant animals to thermal stress as well as to maintain the productivity of the flocks.  相似文献

We put a perspective on the strengths and limitations of statistical methods for the evaluation of surrogate endpoints. Whereas using several trials overcomes some of the limitations of a single-trial framework (Prentice, 1989, Statistics in Medicine 8, 431-440), arguably the evaluation of surrogate endpoints can never be done using only statistical evidence but such evidence should be seen as but one component in a decision-making process that involves, among others, a number of clinical and biological considerations. We briefly present a hierarchical framework that incorporates ideas from Prentice's work and is uniformly applicable to different types of surrogate and true clinical outcomes.  相似文献

A survey into the practice of fine needle aspiration cytology of the breast amongst members of the British Society for Clinical Cytology in 1990 and 1991 was performed. This paper presents their reported use of diagnostic categories in reporting and the criteria found useful in the diagnosis of benign and malignant disease. A wide variety of diagnostic categories are in use. the criteria used in diagnosis largely follow recommendations found in standard textbooks, but some less well recognized features were also suggested.  相似文献
