Summary Estimates of belowground net primary production (BNP) obtained by using traditional soil core harvest data are subject to a variety of potentially serious errors. In a controlled growth chamber experiment, we examined the aboveground-belowground, labile to structural tissue, and plant to soil dynamics of carbon to formulate a14C dilution technique for potential successful application in the field and to quantify sources of error in production estimates.Despite the fact that the majority of net14C movement between above- and belowground plant parts occurred between the initial labeling and day 5, significant quantities of14C were incorporated into cell-wall tissue throughout the growing period. The rate of this increase at late sampling dates was greater for roots than for shoots. Total loss of assimilated14C was 47% in wheat and 28% in blue grama. Exudation and sloughing in wheat and blue grama, respectively, was 15 and 6% of total uptake and 22 and 8% of total plant production. When root production estimates by14C dilution were corrected for the quantities of labile14C incorporated into structural carbon between two sampling dates, good agreement with actual production was found. The error associated with these estimates was ±2% compared with a range of –119 to –57% for the uncorrected estimates. Our results suggest that this technique has potential field application if sampling is performed the year after labelling.Sources of errors in harvest versus14C dilution estimates of BNP are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The inoculation ofAlnus rubra (red alder) withFrankia sp. can lead to a highly efficient symbiosis. Several factors contribute to the successful establishment of nitrogenfixing nodules: (1) quantity and quality ofFrankia inoculant; (2) time and method of inoculation; (3) nutritional status of the host plant.Frankia isolates were screened for their ability to nodulate and promote plant growth of container-grown red alder. Inoculations were performed on seedlings and seeds. Apparent differences in symbiotic performance could be seen when seeds or seedlings were inoculated. Plants inoculated at planting performed significantly better than those inoculated four weeks later in terms of shoot height, nodule number and shoot dry weight. If inoculation was delayed further, reduction in shoot height, nodule number and shoot dry weight resulted. The effect of fertilizer was also investigated with regard to providing optimal plant growth after inoculation. Plants receiving 1/5 Hoagland's solution minus nitrogen showed maximal plant growth with abundant nodulation. Plants receiving 1/5 Hoagland's solution with nitrogen showed excellent plant growth with significantly reduced nodulation.  相似文献

Summary Concentration of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S in summer groundnut crop was higher than in kharif while Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu contents were higher in summer crop. Kernel's N, P and Zn; Leaflet's Ca and Mn; Stem's K and Fe; Root's S and Cu and Petiole's Mg contents were highest. Shell's N, P, K, Mg, S, Zn and Cu; Kernel's Ca, Fe and Mn contents were the least. N, P, K, S, Zn and Cu concentrations decreased linearly as the crop grew. Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn concentrations did not display any distinct pattern. Ca concentration was positively correlated with pod yield in both the seasons.  相似文献

Summary With a stereoscope, as used for the inspection of aerial photographs, sequential photographs of roots obtained by the endoscope method from minirhizotrons can yield much more information than hitherto. A series of photographs shows that most of the roots seen in a minirhizotron in grassland grew on the surface of the lexan tube, while there was a gap between the roots and the soil. Decay of the extensive root hair zones around the roots may make new root growth in the gap between rhizotron wall and soil invisible. Some consequences of these observations for the endoscope method are discussed.  相似文献

Summary In comparative tests in a glasshouse, the cortex of oat and rye roots senesced more slowly than the cortex of wheat and barley roots. Of the cereals tested, wheat showed the most rapid rate of root cortical senescence, and the rate was unaffected by inoculation of leaves withErysiphe graminis. The results are discussed in relation to infection by root pathogens.  相似文献

Summary A plant root observation chamber (rhizotron) was designed to examine soil-grown roots under a stereomicroscope and to sample roots and soil during the growth period of a pot study. The mini-rhizotrons are inexpensive to construct and are suitable for replicated, multitreatment experiments. Illustrative data on root hair and lateral development are presented for seedlings of four crop species.Vermont Agric. Exp. Stn. Journal Article No 572.  相似文献

Summary Root hairs have been shown to enhance P uptake by plants growing in low P soil. Little is known of the factors controlling root hair growth. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of soil moisture and P level on root hair growth of corn (Zea mays L.). The effect of volumetric soil moistures of 22% (M0), 27% (M1), and 32% (M2) and soil (Raub silt loam, Aquic Argiudoll) P levels of, 0.81 (P0), 12.1 (P1), 21.6 (P2), 48.7 (P3), and 203.3 (P4) mol P L–1 initially in the soil solution, on shoot and root growth, P uptake, and root hair growth of corn was studied in a series of pot experiments in a controlled climate chamber. Root hair growth was affected more by soil moisture than soil P. The percentage of total root length with root hairs and the density and length of root hairs on the root sections having root hairs all increased as soil moisture was reduced from M2 to M0. No relationship was found between root hair length and soil P. Density of root hairs, however, was found to decrease with an increase in soil P. No correlation was found between root hair growth parameters and plant P content, further suggesting P plays a secondary role to moisture in regulating root hair growth in soils. The increase in root hair growth appears to be a response by the plant to stress as yield and P uptake by corn grown at M0 were only 0.47 to 0.82, and 0.34 to 0.74, respectively, of that measured at M1 across the five soil P levels. The increase in root hair growth at M0, which represents an increase of 2.76 to 4.03 in root surface area, could offset, in part, the reduced rate of root growth, which was the primary reason for reduced P uptake under limited soil moisture conditions.Journal Paper No. 10,066 Purdue Univ. The effects of methyl jasmonate and jasmonic acid on uptake of abscisic acid (ABA) by suspension-cultured runner-bean cells and subapical runner-bean root segments have been investigated. Increasing concentrations of methyl jasmonate inhibit ABA uptake by the cultured cells with a K i of 22±3 M. This is not due to cytoplasmic acidification or to effects on metabolism of ABA, and is not additive with inhibition of radioactive ABA uptake by nonradioactive ABA. Uptake of indol-3-yl acetic acid (IAA) is unaffected by methyl jasmonate. The maximum effect of nonradioactive ABA in inhibiting uptake of radioactive ABA, previously shown to reflect saturation of an ABA carrier, is generally greater than the effect of maximally inhibitory concentrations of methyl jasmonate. Similar results were obtained with root segments, but longer incubation times were necessary to observe inhibitory effects of methyl jasmonate. Demethylation of methyl jasmonate to jasmonic acid does not appear to be required since similar concentrations of jasmonic acid had no observable direct effect on ABA uptake other than that attributable to cytoplasmic acidification. Histidine reagents, a proton ionophore and acidic external pH all affect in parallel the inhibition by methyl jasmonate and nonradioactive ABA of uptake of radioactive ABA by the cultured cells. There is no effect of ABA or nonradioactive methyl jasmonate on uptake of radioactive methyl jasmonate by the cultured cells. It is proposed that methyl jasmonate interacts with the ABA carrier. Various models for this interaction are discussed.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - DMO 5,5-dimethyloxazolidine-2,4-dione - IAA indol-3-yl acetic acid  相似文献

Internal transport of O2 from the aerial tissues along the adventitious roots of intact maize plants was estimated by measuring the concentrations of adenine nucleotides in various zones along the root under an oxygen-free atmosphere. Young maize plants were grown in nutrient solution under conditions that either stimulated or prevented the formation of a lysigenous aerenchyma, and the roots (up to 210 mm long) were then exposed to an anaerobic (oxygen-free) nutrient solution. Aerenchymatous roots showed higher values than non-aerenchymatous ones for ATP content, adenylate energy charge and ATP/ADP ratios. We conclude that the lysigenous cortical gas spaces help maintain a high respiration rate in the tissues along the root, and in the apical zone, by improving internal transport of oxygen over distances of at least 210 mm. This contrasted sharply with the low energy status (poor O2 transport) in non-aerenchymatous roots.Abbreviation AEC adenylate energy charge  相似文献

The level of endogenous Indol-3-yl-acetic acid (IAA) measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the elongating zone of intact primary roots of Zea mays showed a good linear correlation with the growth rate of these roots. When they were treated with IAA, their relative elongation decreased; this indicates a supraoptimal content of endogenous IAA. However, the growth of some of the relatively rapidly extending roots was enhanced by such treatment. Interactions between endogenous and applied IAA in the control of root growth are discussed.Abbreviations GC-MS gas chromatography-mass spectrometry - IAA Indol-3-yl-acetic acid  相似文献
