Most savanna water balance models assume water partitioning between grasses and shrubs in a two-layer hypothesis, but this hypothesis has not been tested for humid savanna environments. Spatial partitioning of soil water between grasses and shrubs was investigated in a West African humid savanna by comparing the isotopic composition (oxygen-18 and deuterium) of soil water and plant stem water during rainy and dry conditions. Both grass and shrub species acquire most of their water from the top soil layer during both rainy and dry periods. A shift of water uptake pattern towards deeper horizons was observed only at the end of the dry season after shrub defoliation. The mean depth of water uptake, as determined by the isotopic signature of stem water, was consistent with grass and shrub root profiles and with changes in soil water content profiles as surveyed by a neutron probe. This provides evidence for potentially strong competition between shrubs and grasses for soil water in these humid savannas. Limited nutrient availability may explain these competitive interactions. These results enhance our understanding of shrub-grass interactions, and will contribute to models of ecosystem functioning in humid savannas.  相似文献

Eight compounds exuded from young roots of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) were separated by two-dimensional HPTLC, by HPLC and GC, and were identified by spectroscopic methods (ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) as 4′,7-dihydroxyflavone, apigenin, naringenin, chrysoeriol and isoliquiritigenin. Structural assignments were confirmed by comparison with authentic standards. The capacity to induce β-galactosidase activity in Rhizobium sp. NGR234 containing a nod box::lacZ fusion on plasmid pA27 identified these flavonoids and the chalcone as nod gene inducers. This indicates the important role of these compounds in nodulation of this legume tree. Received: 26 July 1996 / Accepted: 9 September 1996  相似文献

The root bark structure of Quercus robur L. was analysed at different stages of root development and compared to the structure of stem bark. Root bark thickness varied considerably between different roots. Sclereid quantity decreased with increasing distance from the stem, which means it increased with age. Visible growth increments diminished with increasing distance from the stem. In lateral roots crystal quantity decreased with increasing distance from the stem. In lateral roots secondary phloem fibre length, sieve tube member length, and sieve tube diameter showed no regular trend. There were only a few basic structural differences between root and stem bark. The zone of cell differentiation (cell expansion, lignification) was wider in root bark; sieve tube collapse was delayed. In lateral root bark fewer sclereids were formed. The first-formed periderm often originated from deeper cell layers. Thus, primary elements were lacking after periderm formation. In root bark the phellem cell walls were of equal thickness. Thus, phellem lacked visible growth increments. Root bark phellem cells were slightly larger. The root phelloderm was more distinct. The secondary phloem fibres were slightly shorter than those in stem bark. Sieve tube members of stem and root bark were of similar length and diameter. The qualitative bark anatomical characters of oak root bark are suitable for root identifications. Due to minor structural differences between root and stem bark the characters must be used with care.  相似文献

Ten-d-old seedlings of Zea mays L. cv. Tx 5855 treated with 1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-(3-[trifluoromethyl]phenyl)-4-(1H)-pyridinone (Fluridone) were analyzed for abscisic acid (ABA) content using high-performance liquid chromatography with an analysis sensitivity of 2.5 ng ABA g-1 fresh weight (FW). Seedlings were divided into three portions: leaves, detipped roots, and root tips (terminal 1.5 mm). Control plants (water treatment only; no Fluridone) were characterized by the following amounts of ABA: leaves, 0.114±0.024 (standard deviation) g ABA g-1 FW; detipped roots, 0.260±0.039±g ABA g-1 FW; root tips, no ABA detected. We did not detect any ABA in tissues of Fluridone-treated plants. Primary roots of treated and untreated seedlings were strongly graviresponsive, with no significant differences between the curvatures or the growth rates of primary roots of Fluridone-treated and control seedlings. These results indicate that 1) Fluridone completely inhibits ABA synthesis, and 2) ABA is not necessary for positive gravitropism by primary roots of Zea mays.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - Fluridone 1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-(3-[trifluoromethyl]phenyl)-4-(1H)-pyridinone - FW fresh weight - SD standard deviation  相似文献

Protoplasts were isolated from cortical cells of the elongating zone of maize (Zea mays L. cv. LG 11) roots and submitted to microelectrophoresis. Significant and transient differences in zeta potential between protoplasts from upper and lower root sides were compared with the gravireaction and the differential elongation of these roots. The maximum difference in the zeta potential was obtained between protoplasts from the upper and lower cortical cells after 90 min, exactly the time of gravipresentation for which the maximum rate of gravireaction was observed. In addition, this almost corresponded to the time for which the difference between the elongation rates of upper and lower sides of the extending zone began to increase. Consequently, the changes in the charges of the plasmalemma of the cortical cells from the growing part of roots could be more or less directly related to the root graviresponse.  相似文献

Summary The first of two major steps in the infection process in roots ofParasponia rigida (Ulmaceae) following inoculation byRhizobium strain RP501 involves the invasion ofRhizobium into the intercellular space system of the root cortex. The earliest sign of root nodule initiation is the presence of clumps of multicellular root hairs (MCRH), a response apparently unique amongRhizobium-root associations. At the same time or shortly after MCRH are first visible, cell divisions are initiated in the outer root cortex of the host plant, always subjacent to the MCRH. No infection threads were observed in root hairs or cortical cells in early stages. Rhizobial entry through the epidermis and into the root cortex was shown to occur via intercellular invasion at the bases of MCRH. The second major step in the infection process is the actual infectionper se of host cells by the rhizobia and formation of typical intracellular infection threads with host cell accommodation. This infection step is probably the beginning of the truly symbiotic relationship in these nodules. Rhizobial invasion and infection are accompanied by host cortical cell divisions which result in a callus-like mass of cortical cells. In addition to infection thread formation in some of these host cortical cells, another type of rhizobial proliferation was observed in which large accumulations of rhizobia in intercellular spaces are associated with host cell wall distortion, deposition of electron-dense material in the walls, and occasional deleterious effects on host cell cytoplasm.  相似文献

Summary Two different strains, An 1 and An 2, were obtained from root nodules ofAlnus nitida Endl., collected from one locality in the area of its natural habitat near Bahrin, District Swat, Pakistan. The light and electron microscopy of the isolates revealed the occurrence of septate and branched hyphae bearing sporangia and vesicles. The strains differed in their growth requirements, nitrogen-fixing ability and production of extracellular pigments, thus indicating the existence of more than oneFrankia strain in the same locality. In the absence of combined nitrogen in the medium strain An 1 formed vesicles and fixed N2 (up to 200 nmol C2H4. mg protein–1.h–1), while strain An 2 under the experimental conditions formed only few vesicles and fixed N2 at a very low rate (ca 10 nmol C2H4. mg protein–1 .h–1). The nitrogenase activity of strain An 1 was strongly affected by the O2 concentration.Frankia An 1 and An 2 were infective and effective onA. nitida andA. glutinosa but not onDatisca cannabina andElaeagnus umbellata. Both An 1 and An 2 strains were more infective and effective onA. glutinosa thanFrankia strains AvcIl and CpI1.  相似文献

Summary Organic components leaked fromSorghum bicolor seedlings (‘root exudates’) were examined by recovering14C labelled compounds from root solutions of seedlings inoculated withAzospirillum brasilense, Azotobacter vinelandii orKlebsiella pneumoniae nif-. Up to 3.5% of the total14C recovered from shoots, roots, and nutrient solutions was found in the root solutions. Inoculation with Azospirillum and Azotobacter increased the amounts of14C and decreased the amounts of carbohydrates in the root solutions. When sucrose was added as a carbon source for the bacteria, the increase of14C in the solutions did not occur. Quantities of14C found in the root solutions were proportional to amounts of mineral nitrogen supplied to the plants. Bacterial growth also was proportional to nitrogen levels. When sorghum plants were grown in soil and labelled with14CO2, about 15% of the total14C recovered within 48 hours exposure was found in soil leachates.  相似文献

The number of roots formed in cuttings of pea ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) was regulated both by the temperature and by IAA, whereas the time to the appearance of the first roots was regulated only by the temperature. Cuttings treated with 10-3 M IAA had a smaller content of extractable carbohydrates than the control ones irrespective of the temperature. In the bases of cuttings rooted at 25°C the content of extractable carbohydrates was lower than in those rooted at 15°C. Cuttings treated with IAA showed up to elevenfold increase of extractable carbohydrates in the bases at day 3. This increase of soluble sugars was not correlated with the number of roots formed or the speed of rooting. It is concluded that IAA affects the accumulation of carbohydrates, and this is not connected with the rooting ability of the cuttings.  相似文献

Summary The air content in three types of propagation media, Jiffy-7 and Jiffy-9 which are Sphagnum peat and Grodan which is rockwool, were investigated when they were held at moisture tensions of 0,6 and 12 cm measured from the base of the media. At 0 cm tension the air content (vol. %) was highest in Jiffy-9 and lowest in Jiffy-7. At 12 cm tension the air content was higher in Grodan than in Jiffy-9 and Jiffy-7. Oxygen diffusion coefficients (ODC) and oxygen diffusion rates (ODR) were measured at the different air contents. At air contents below 20 vol. % ODC was about the same for Jiffy-9 and Grodan but at air contents above 20 vol.% it was larger for Jiffy-9 than for Grodan. The oxygen diffusion rate was measured at 0, 4 and 8 cm moisture tension. At all tensions it was approximately 20% higher in Jiffy-9 than in Grodan and Jiffy-7. The ODR in Jiffy-7 and Grodan were affected equally at the same tension, although Grodan contained more air. Report no 253  相似文献
