Densities of macrobenthic invertebrates and macro-algae in four Tasmanian ‘no-take’ marine protected areas (MPAs) were monitored annually for 10 years following MPA establishment, with changes compared to those at external (fished) reference locations. Fishing substantially influenced the population characteristics of many species, including altering the mean size and abundance of rock lobsters and the abundance of prey species such as urchins and abalone. Strong declines in abundances of purple urchins and abalone within the largest MPA at Maria Island indicate likely indirect effects related to protection of predators from fishing. The two smallest MPAs (ca. 1 km coastal span) generated few detectable changes. Our results affirm the importance of long-term monitoring and the value of MPAs, when sufficiently large, as reference areas for determining and understanding ecosystem effects of fishing in the absence of historical baseline data.  相似文献

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and brain edema are important pathophysiologies of early brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). This study is to evaluate whether Rho kinase (Rock) enhances BBB permeability via disruption of tight junction proteins during early brain injury. Adult male rats were assigned to five groups; Sham-operated, SAH treated with saline, a Rock inhibitor hydroxyfasudil (HF) (10 mg/kg) treatment at 0.5 h after SAH, HF treatment at 0.5 and 6 h (10 mg/kg, each) after SAH, and another Rock inhibitor Y27632 (10 mg/kg) treatment at 0.5 h after SAH. The perforation model of SAH was performed and neurological score and brain water content were evaluated 24 and 72 h after surgery. Evans blue extravasation, Rock activity assay, and western blotting analyses were evaluated 24 h after surgery. Treatment of HF significantly improved neurological scores 24 h after SAH. Single treatment with HF and Y27632, and two treatments with HF reduced brain water content in the ipsilateral hemisphere. HF reduced Evans blue extravasation in the ipsilateral hemisphere after SAH. Rock activity increased 24 h after SAH, and HF reversed the activity. SAH significantly decreased the levels of tight junction proteins, occludin and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), and HF preserved the levels of occluding and ZO-1 in ipsilateral hemisphere. In conclusion, HF attenuated BBB permeability after SAH, possibly by protection of tight junction proteins.  相似文献

Rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) tumor necrosis factor-α (rbTNF-α) gene was cloned, recombinantly produced, and the effect of the recombinant rbTNF-α on the respiratory burst activity of rock bream phagocytes was analyzed. Structurally, genomic DNA of rbTNF-α was comprised with four exons and three introns, and deduced amino acid sequence of its cDNA possessed the TNF family signature, a transmembrane domain, a protease cleavage site, and two cysteine residues, which are the typical characteristics of TNF-α gene in mammals and fish. The chemiluminescent (CL) response of rock bream phagocytes was significantly enhanced by pre-incubation with recombinant rbTNF-α, when opsonized zymosan was used as a stimulant of the respiratory burst. However, CL enhancing effect of the recombinant rbTNF-α was very weak when the respiratory burst activity of phagocytes was triggered with phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) instead of zymosan. These results suggest that rock bream TNF-α might have an ability to prime the respiratory burst activity of phagocytes against receptor-mediated phagocytosis inducing stimulants, such as zymosan, but have little ability against stimulants not accompanying receptor-mediated phagocytosis.  相似文献

Establishment, colonization, and permanence of plants affect biogenic and physical processes leading to development of soil. Rockiness, temperature, and humidity are accepted explanations to the influence and the presence of rock-dwelling plants, but the relationship between mineral and chemical composition of rocks with plant abundance is unknown in some regions. This study documents plant species growing on rocks, their capacity as rock colonizers measured by the Importance Index, and the relationships between the chemical composition of rocks and the abundance of the dominant plant. The community is composed of eight species and is dominated by the small cactus Mammillaria fraileana. Sites with low abundance of this species contain volcanic breccias, high amounts Ca, Fe, Mg, Ti, Al, and Mn as part of moderately weatherable minerals, such as plagioclase and pyroxene. Sites with higher abundance contain rhyodacite, rhyolite, and andesite rocks rich in more weatherable minerals, such as volcanic glass and minerals containing Si, K, and Na. K and Na were present in equal proportions only at the site with more plants. Since Na is toxic for most plants, an experiment was carried out to assess its effect on the survival of M. fraileana seedlings. Decreased survival occurred as the concentration of Na increased. Even in the treatment without Na, survival decreased slightly. In summary, presence and abundance of plants is related to the type of bedrock, their weathering characteristics, and proportion of elements. The interactions among elements, rather than the isolated effect of specific elements, could be the most reliable explanation for local variations in the abundance and dominance of Mammillaria fraileana in rocky habitat in the southern Sonoran Desert.  相似文献

Concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were measured in thereference and treatment basins of Little Rock Lake (Vilas County, Wisconsin), alow-alkalinity, seepage system (pH 6.1, alkalinity25eq/L) during six years of a whole-basinacidificationand the first four years of the lake's recovery. The treatment basin wasacidified with H2SO4 in three two-year steps to pH5.6, 5.1, and 4.7. By the end of year 4 of recovery, treatmentbasin pH increased to 5.3 as a result of internal alkalinity generation.During acidification, dissolved Mn and Fe (0.4mpore-size filters) increased at pH 5.6; dissolved Al, Cd, and Zn becameelevated at pH 5.1; and dissolved Pb at pH 4.7. Dissolved Cu remainedsimilar in both basins to pH 4.7. Al, Fe and Mn levels declinedsignificantly during the recovery period, approaching values at pH 5.3intermediate between the concentrations at pH 5.6 and 5.1 during acidification.Dissolved Al and Fe in the reference basin were near the equilibrium levels forsolubility of gibbsite (Al(OH)3) and amorphousFe(OH)3(s).The acidified basin was undersaturated relative to gibbsite, and dissolved Alwas limited by pH disequilibrium between the water column and sediments andpossibly by Al-DOC precipitation. Dissolved Fe apparently was controlled bysolubility of amorphous Fe(OH)3(s) and Fe-DOC precipitation.Dissolved Mn levels in both basins were consistent with manganite[-MnOOH(s)] solubility. Elevated levels of Cd, Pb, and Zn in thetreatment basin during acidification probably resulted from less efficientscavenging of atmospherically-deposited Cd, Pb, and Zn by settling particles.  相似文献

Intraterrestrial life has been found at depths of several thousand metres in deep sub-sea floor sediments and in the basement crust beneath the sediments. It has also been found at up to 2800-m depth in continental sedimentary rocks, 5300-m depth in igneous rock aquifers and in fluid inclusions in ancient salt deposits from salt mines. The biomass of these intraterrestrial organisms may be equal to the total weight of all marine and terrestrial plants. The intraterrestrial microbes generally seem to be active at very low but significant rates and several investigations indicate chemolithoautotrophs to form a chemosynthetic base. Hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide gases are continuously generated in the interior of our planet and probably constitute sustainable sources of carbon and energy for deep intraterrestrial biosphere ecosystems. Several prospective research areas are foreseen to focus on the importance of microbial communities for metabolic processes such as anaerobic utilisation of hydrocarbons and anaerobic methane oxidation.  相似文献

The major physiognomic and ecological categories of the lichen-rich, epigeic communities in the boreal (taiga) and arctic (tundra) zones are defined and their syntaxonomy and ecology in Europe, Asia and North America is reviewed. In the boreal and hemiarctic areas open, dry, acidophytic lichen woodlands are widespread, especially on sandy habitats. Their epigeic lichen synusiae are usually dominated by four fruticoseCladina species, being extremely homogeneous in species composition and structure throughout the boreal zone, while the dominant trees and the other vascular plant flora of the woodlands are geographically more variable. No phytosociological classification system exists that would cover most of these communities over the circumpolar regions. Very similar communities, though much more poorly known, are found on thin soils over Precambrian rock outcrops. Other sites to produce epigeic lichen communities include open sand dunes, treeless heathlands, drier bogs and many seral stages, like those on road banks. Boreal lichen-rich communities on eutrophic soils may be developed in semiarid regions, in particular. In the Arctic, lichens are common in most communities, and the driest ones are regularly lichen-dominated, whether acidophytic or eutrophytic, chionophytic or achionophytic. Detailed syntaxonomic systems for their classification have been developed, especially in Greenland and Scandinavian mountains (in oroarctic zones in the latter regions). The richest fruticose lichen areas are in continental, hemiarctic timberline regions in northern Siberia and Canada. The southern and middle arctic subzones are also characterized by many macrolichens, such asCetraria cucullata, C. nivalis, Alectoria ochroleuca, andThamnolia vermicularis, but everywhere also small, crustose lichens are common on soil, such asRinodina turfacea andLopadium pezizoideum, which are often overlooked in vegetation analyses. The presence of microlichens and the formation of mosaic micropatterns of soil lichen communities is particularly typical of the northern arctic subzone. The conservation problems of the boreal and arctic lichen communities include overgrazing by reindeer or caribou, which has caused delichenization in some regions, extensive forest and tundra fires, use of heavy transport vehicles in forestry and tundra operations, and, locally, heavy industrial air pollution.  相似文献

Partially purified human leukocyte interferons, partially purified human lymphoblastoid interferon, and human fibroblast interferon enhanced rat liver, kidney, and splenic guanylate cyclase {E.C.4.6.1.2.} activity 2–4 fold at 5 μIU concentration. Dose-response relationships revealed that the human leukocyte interferons enhanced splenic guanylate cyclase activity at concentrations as low as 0.01 μIU while a concentration of 1 μIU for partially purified human lymphoblastoid interferon and 10 μIU concentration for human fibroblast interferon were necessary to see any effect on guanylate cyclase activity.  相似文献

Summary The effects on cowpea of inoculation with vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi and rock phosphate (RP) fertilization were studied in pots using Alagba and Araromi series soils and in the field on Alagba, Apomu and Egbeda series soils. Inoculation of the plants with VA-mycorrhizal fungi caused very rapid infection of the roots. A higher per cent mycorrhizal infection was maintained during subsequent plant growth in the field. RP application reduced the degree of infection without affecting plant growth in the field and in pot experiments. Nodulation, nitrogen fixation and utilization of RP were increased by inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi in the pot experiments but not in the field experiments. In the pot experiments, inoculated plants supplied with RP flowered earlier, and took up more phosphorus than either inoculated plants without RP or uninoculated plants. The largest response to inoculation in terms of shoot dry matter, nodule yield and nitrogen content of shoots was obtained in Alagba soil under both pot and field conditions.IITA Journal Series Paper No. 136.  相似文献

Summary Among several phosphate-solibilizing micro-organisms isolated from an alluvial soil (Fluvaquent) in sucrose-Ca3(PO4)2 agar plates, two fungal strains, ACF2 (Aspergillus candidus) and ACF1 (A. fumigatus) two bacterial strains, ACB5 (Bacillus firmus B-7650) and ACB6 (B. firmus B-7651) and one actinomycete strain, ACS6 (Streptomyces sp.) were efficient solubilizers, solubilizing 297.0, 288.3, 49.0, 45.8 and 29.0 μg of P as free PO4 −3, respectively, containing 15 mg insoluble P from Ca3(PO4)2 in broth. Solubilization was lesser from AlPO4 and FePO4. The isolates producing oxalic and tartaric acids without or with citric acid showed higher ability of solubilizing insoluble inorganic phosphates. All the above isolates possessed the ability of solubilizing rock phosphate in considerable amounts, ACF1 (A. fumigatus) being the highest (31.5 μg), while ACB6 (B. firmus B-7651) and both the aspergilli also possessed cellulose-decomposing ability in addition. Inoculation of the isolates, in a flask culture experiment, had no significant effect on the accumulation of available phosphorus in soil even when amended with rock phosphate (RP), farm yard manure (FYM), (FYM+RP), rice straw (RS) and (RS+RP). Nevertheless, the overall performance of ACF2 (A. candidus) and ACB6 (B. firmus B-7651) was better than that of the others, in this respect, while ACB5 (B. firmus B-7650) and ACF1 (A. fumigatus) intensified the enhancing effect of FYM and RS. Partial sterilization, by autoclaving, of the soil had no significant effect on available phosphorus content of the soil irrespective of any inoculation.  相似文献
