Reproductive allocation (RA) plays a vital role in the development of ecological strategies during the life cycle of plant species. Invasive alien plants (IAP) may exist at various invasion degrees across a gradient of the colonization process with several grades of relative abundances in the occupied environments. The progressive variation in the invasion degree of IAP has the potential to modify their RA strategy. This study purposes of estimating the RA strategy of the IAP Solidago canadensis L. and the correlations among RA of S. canadensis, the invasion intensity of S. canadensis, the invasiveness of S. canadensis, and the community invasibility across a gradient of invasion degrees by using the field sampling experiment. The height and relative abundance of S. canadensis did not remarkably affect its RA. The RA of S. canadensis was positively related to its reproductive biomass and total biomass. The key reason may be that plant individuals with higher total biomass can allocate more resources into sexual reproduction. The RA of S. canadensis was positively related to its invasiveness. Thus, the RA of S. canadensis may be crucial to its invasiveness. 相似文献

The technique of gene fusion, in which the gene of interest, severed from its 3' end, is in-phase fused to a reporter gene--usually lacZ--is widely used to study translational regulation in Escherichia coli. Implicit in these approaches is the assumption that the activity of the ribosome binding site (RBS) fused in-phase with lacZ, does not per se modify the steady-state level of the lacZ mRNA. Herein, we have tested this hypothesis, using a model system in which the RBS of the lamB gene is fused to lacZ. Several point mutations affecting translation initiation have been formerly characterized in this RBS, and we used Northern blots to study their effect upon the lacZ mRNA pattern. Two series of constructs were assayed: in the first one, a 51-bp fragment centered around the lamB initiator codon, was inserted in front of lacZ within the natural lactose operon, whereas in the second the lacZ gene was fused to the genuine malK-lamB operon just downstream from the lamB RBS. We observed that in the first series, the concentration and average molecular weight of the lacZ mRNA dropped sharply as the efficiency of the RBS decreased. This apparently arose from a decreased stability of the message, since the mRNA patterns are equalized when the endonuclease RNase E is inactivated. Infliction of DNA damage initiates a complex cellular reaction – the DNA damage response – that involves both signaling and DNA repair networks with many redundancies and parallel pathways. Here, we reveal the three strategies that the simple multicellular eukaryote, C. elegans, uses to deal with DNA damage induced by light. Separately inactivating repair or replicative bypass of photo-lesions results in cellular hypersensitivity towards UV-light, but impeding repair of replication associated DNA breaks does not. Yet, we observe an unprecedented synergistic relationship when these pathways are inactivated in combination. C. elegans mutants that lack nucleotide excision repair (NER), translesion synthesis (TLS) and alternative end joining (altEJ) grow undisturbed in the dark, but become sterile when grown in light. Even exposure to very low levels of normal daylight impedes animal growth. We show that NER and TLS operate to suppress the formation of lethal DNA breaks that require polymerase theta-mediated end joining (TMEJ) for their repair. Our data testifies to the enormous genotoxicity of light and to the demand of multiple layers of protection against an environmental threat that is so common. 相似文献

Inter-individual variation in phase-of-entrainment (chronotype) is widely observed in many species, but the underlying mechanisms and its consequences remain largely unexplored. In light of considerable limitations of previous studies proposing that the late chronotypes exhibit weakly stable rhythms, we employed outbred Drosophila populations exhibiting early and late emergence chronotypes to re-visit such associations. Contrary to previous reports, we observed that the late chronotypes consistently exhibit higher stability in emergence and activity–rest rhythms as compared to the early chronotypes, both under laboratory and semi-natural conditions, which is not associated with higher precision of circadian clocks, thus demonstrating the existence of genetic correlations between accuracy of entrainment and chronotype. Our results, along with the previously reported clock property differences between the early and the late emergence chronotypes highlights a possible complex interplay of clock period, phase response curve and accuracy in determining phase-of-entrainment. 相似文献

Alignment of three nucleic acids strands, in which the third strand is identical to one of the DNA duplex strands, occurs in various cellular systems. In the case of telomeric t-loops, recognition between the DNA duplex and the homologous single strand is likely to be mediated by proteins through formation of the transient recombination-type R-triplex. Earlier, using 2-aminopurine as a fluorescent reporting base, we evaluated the thermodynamic characteristics of intramolecular R-triplex formed by a mixed nucleotide sequence. Here, we used this approach to explore a propensity of the telomeric TTAGGG repeat to form the R-triplex. The circular dichroism spectral changes detected upon formation of the R-triplex suggest that this process is accompanied by specific conformational changes in DNA, including a local destabilization of the target duplex next to a GGG run revealed by the fluorescence of the reporting 2-aminopurine base. Surprisingly, stability of the R-triplex formed by telomeric sequence depends strikingly on the counter ion, being higher for Na+ than for Li+. Taken together these findings indicate a significant conformational variability of telomeric DNA in the context of recombination-type R-triplex, a phenomenon of possible biological relevance. 相似文献

Hypoxia strongly affects embryonic development during the pre-hatch period. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of oxygen supplementation (O) and a 38.5°C high temperature (HT) at high altitude (HA, 1720 m) on morphological traits during a pre-hatch period and on relative fluctuating asymmetry (relative FA) and allometric growth during an early post-hatch period in broilers. A total of 720 eggs were obtained from a 45-week-old Ross 308 broiler breeder flock raised at sea level (2 m). The eggs were divided into six incubation condition (IC) groups and were incubated at HA. O groups were exposed to 23.5% O2 for 1 h daily from either days 0 to 11 (O0–11), days 12 to 21 (O12–21) or days 18 to 21 (O18–21) of incubation. HT groups were exposed to 38.5°C daily from either days 12 to 21 (HT12–21) or days 18 to 21 (HT18–21) of incubation. A control was maintained at 37.8°C and 21% O2. The hatched chicks were raised for 6 days at HA. Embryo/chick and beak lengths and head diameter were measured during pre- and post-hatch periods. The face, middle toe and shank lengths were measured for each chick. The relative asymmetry (RA), mean RA (MRA) and allometric growth of the lengths were computed and the existence of FA was demonstrated. The IC significantly affected the embryo length, with embryos of the O0–11 group shorter than embryos of the other O groups. Chicks were longer in the O and HT groups than those in the control, except for the O0–11. We found significant interactions between the IC and each development period for beak length. During the post-hatch period, the head diameter of the O0-11 was significantly smaller than that of the other groups, but not in O12–21. The interactions among IC, age and sex were significant for the RA of the face and middle toe lengths and for MRA. All the examined bilateral traits were evaluated as allometric growth. The FA for bilateral traits was determined in both sexes. The right (R) – left (L) and IR-Ll were the lowest in females for face length and in males for shank length from the O18–21 and in males for middle toe length from the O0–11 and HT18–21 groups. Therefore, the effects of factors such as HT and O2 could mitigate the adverse effects of HA-induced hypoxia on optimal developmental stability of bilateral traits of broiler. 相似文献

A propiconazole-resistant Trichoderma harzianum strain with high phylloplane survival capability was transformed with the E. coli hygromycin B phosphotransferase gene (hph), coding for hygromycin B resistance. Four transformants were analysed for survival ability on the phylloplane of tomato plants grown under glasshouse conditions in comparison with their prototype and a yellow, hygromycin B-sensitive mutant. Over 2 weeks, the four transformants showed higher survival rates in comparison with the wild-type strain. The yellow mutant TF3/973 did not significantly differ in survival from the transformants. Both hygromycin B resistance and mitotic stability of transformants were evaluated during growth in vitro and after reisolation from tomato phylloplane. Hybridization patterns with the complete plasmid indicated that all four transformants were mitotically stable after several rounds of vegetative growth without selective pressure and during 2 weeks on tomato plants. None of the transformants had lost the ability to grow in the presence of both propiconazole and hygromycin B after growth under the same conditions. The results are discussed in relation to risk assessment of the release of transgenic fungi. 相似文献

Aim To investigate the historical distribution of the Cerrado across Quaternary climatic fluctuations and to generate historical stability maps to test: (1) whether the ‘historical climate’ stability hypothesis explains squamate reptile richness in the Cerrado; and (2) the hypothesis of Pleistocene connections between savannas located north and south of Amazonia. Location The Cerrado, a savanna biome and a global biodiversity hotspot distributed mainly in central Brazil. Methods We generated occurrence datasets from 1000 presence points randomly selected from the entire distribution of the Cerrado, as determined by two spatial definitions. We modelled the potential Cerrado distribution by implementing a maximum‐entropy machine‐learning algorithm across four time projections: current, mid‐Holocene (6 ka), Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 ka) and Last Interglacial (LIG, 120 ka). We generated historical stability maps (refugial areas) by overlapping presence/absence projections of all scenarios, and checked consistencies with qualitative comparisons with available fossil pollen records. We built a spatially explicit simultaneous autoregressive model to explore the relationship between current climate, climatic stability, and squamate species richness. Results Models predicted the LGM and LIG as the periods of narrowest and widest Cerrado distributions, respectively, and were largely corroborated by palynological evidence. We found evidence for two savanna corridors (eastern coastal during the LIG, and Andean during the LGM) and predicted a large refugial area in the north‐eastern Cerrado (Serra Geral de Goiás refugium). Variables related to climatic stability predicted squamate richness better than present climatic variables did. Main conclusions Our results indicate that Bolivian savannas should be included within the Cerrado range and that the Cerrado’s biogeographical counterparts are not Chaco and Caatinga but rather the disjunct savannas of the Guyana shield plateaus. Climatic stability is a good predictor of Cerrado squamate richness, and our stability maps could be used in future studies to test diversity patterns and genetic signatures of different taxonomic groups and as a higher‐order landscape biodiversity surrogate for conservation planning. 相似文献
